I really miss the energy and creativity of the 80s. The spectrum of music was much broader and the artist were so much more unique. Bring back the 80s!
As a white teen out in theburbs in the 80’s I bought Miss Watley’s first album and was completely crushed by her beauty, style and class. Plus her music was the jam! Have loved her since and still play her jams at 50.
Hey, I'm not white, but what does it matter?! Music is totally universal, especially good music!!!!!! I would have dancing, singing right along with you!!!!!! I guess we can say she's "Still A Thrill"!!!!!!! Facts!!!!!! Another fun fact: Prince wrote that for her!!!!!!! Peace!!!!!!!!
Her bloomers/Chanel Belt/Converse combo is permanently seared into my brain! I was 14 and a freshman at a fashion design high school here in New York. Jody will eternally be my fashion muse.

Wow, what ever happened to these beautiful old school ladies that had class and weren't full of trash. I miss old videos like this. Today's videos show lots of nasty fake trash with no clothes on. This is what I call classic and best .
One of the most gorgeous creatures to ever grace this Earth. She is like a modern day Nefertiti. The fact that she has tremendous talent and style in addition to that breathtaking beauty makes her one of the most captivating musical stars we've ever had in the U.S. For awhile I thought she had a chance to give Madonna a run for her money, but the quality of her albums started to slip after the first two and she was unable to regain the necessary momentum to reclaim her prominence.. Regardless, she will always be a favorite of mine, and I have to say, when people are unaware of her it drives me nuts!
Her music quality did not slip, she made several great records after her first two. I think hers sales dipped partly because she was growing as a person and artist and her music became more mature and not all dance pop RnB. Her Affairs of the Heart album is her best work (in my opinion) with excellent dance, mid tempos and ballads with adult/real life themes and she sounds amazing. Sometimes music fans put artists in a box and don't or can't embrace their growth. It has happened to many singers.
me and girlfriend use to eat her style up biker shorts bra tops and leather jackets and patent leather shoes . ... we were the first girls in my neighborhood to start getting long weaves because we wanted to look like Jody. oh the 80's! the fashion the hair the music! I sported alot of Ms. Watley's clothes back then including all clothes in her music videos.. had the long hair for it. I found her fashion to be fly and I went through alot of fashion and hair things back in the day but Jody was the best ♥️

I still love Jody, I remember being in high school listening to her. She was so funky yet very classy, I remember I wanted to copy everything she wore. I remember someone saying that Jody just made up her dance steps while filming her videos. Nothing was choreographed. That's the coolest thing.
Jody, style miles ahead of the rest during her day. This chic was on another level with her wardrobe choices. I always loved the way she danced, moved, and worked the camera in videos. A good dancer always shines, even 26 years on from the release of this video.
My first celebrity crush!!! Love me some Ms. Watley...she made me appreciate all the beautiful ladies like Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Karyn White, Vanessa Williams, En Vogue, Toni Braxton, etc.

I'm a HARD ROCKING and HEAD BANGING METALHEAD from the 1980's. Although my favorite genre is HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL, I have to admit other genres back in the 1980's had great music as well.
Are you alright? You might as well also say she's on par with Barbra Streisand & Diana Ross....and oh, let's just include Mozart & Vivaldi, maybe Elvis, too.
writerforlifeify I'm quite alright actually and stand firm on my previous comment. Speaking of my comment, what exactly has you in such a tizzie? From '87 to '89 Jody Wately had the hot videos, the hit songs, the fashions and high profile that placed her right up there with her contemporaries. Clearly, you must have been a mere child in the 80's because if you were of age, you would know this and would never have questioned my comment.
Child or not, then or now, it matters not. The point is I have EARS! Her videos are prosaic, banal, dull; her voice is bland, stale-soda-flat; her fashions unoriginal (80s, 'nuf said) Place her on what pedestal you will, she doesn't appeal to MY ear!
writerforlifeify It is absolutely your perogative to not like her as an artists. However, your not liking her does not void her accomplishments or change the fact that during that time, many listeners DID enjoy her work.
Firstly, I made no reference to Janet in my prior posts. Secondly, you're not listening to MOI; I neither overtly stated nor implied that Madonna can actually SING...I mean, c'mon...her pipes are not exactly the calibre of Céline Dion, Streisand, Susan Boyle, Toni Tennille, Karen Carpenter, etc. Madonna held my (then juvenile attention) for a brief spell then lost it by the close of the 80s. Perpetual drama, taboo-pushing, & image re-invention ploys are the tactics of the essentially untalented but business-savvy 'artists'. And she was never box-office gold as either an actor or director. Her track record in cinema speaks for itself but I digress..... Dusty Springfield (I just discovered her)...now there's a VOICE! And yes, I do write: fiction/poetry/lyrics. I don't need a music class...I listen to lots of 70s music & classical; Mozart & Vivaldi. : )
I haven't heard this song in a minute. She simply owned this first album and her fashion sense was fierce!!! I am 51 and still enjoy and often wear my big hoop earrings, plus that black cat liner look - remember copying that look as well. Andre Cymone is simply YUMMY!! I still recall him having a minor hit back in 82 -83 with a song called "Kelly's Eyes".
Jodi Watley was one of my childhood faves. The voice that sounded like Motown, the cutting funky 80s bop, the punky city style. I miss this moment. Wish I could've lived through it as an adult.
Really appreciate Jody. When u think of it shes the OG in fashion world. Her style was classic Mod Sexy beautiful the original Around the Wayy Girll. Celebrate this gorgeous creature
True. And Karen White, Sheila E, Chanté... Those amazing, talented, beautiful African-American women were a huge part of the 1980's. Glad I was there for it.
This is a GREAT music video. Not just because of the great artist and song, but the video itself is EXTREMELY well done. The camera angles, the editing, the wardrobes, the set design - very classy. Amazing!
Jody is a classy lady with a good heart and soul!! Thanks for your amazing music!! Dancing in the clubs in the 80s dressing like Jody was the best memories ever!! Miss those nights!! 💋❤️🥂❤️❤️💋💋

The Prophet of Rage I love her and she will always be it 🎤
Yes, and still is. The real deal 💞
exactly... I still love her style,, the manly suits that looked feminine on her..
Jody's style was undeniable! She was a uncredited trendsetter. I adored her.
My friends and I used to refer to her as the Black Madonna, which is who she reminded us of, loved her then, and now!!!
The original Vogue!
Actually she was credited for being a trensetter look it up.
Leo Vial Madonna copied her. Admitted she was very influenced by Jody.
