  • Black History Month feels different this year because at least 18 states have enacted limits on what schools can teach about race. Elsewhere, Rep. George Santos told a reporter he’s only going to tell the truth from today forward, and Stephen looks into another mysterious story involving monkeys.

    As an undergrad instructor I am LIVID that education deprivation is alive and well.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott Год назад +1

      Sadly, the deprivation is mostly a consequence of parental disregard. Too many parents may demand a good education for their children, and fault teachers when it is not achieved. Yet beyond that, most oppose allocating more resources. Perhaps more significant, a majority of parents show no interest in what their children are being taught and tested. Showing an interest in the specifics of what they've learned and perhaps even engaging with the homework occasionally would greatly aid motivation to learn. In actuality, the 'interest' rarely goes beyond telling their kids 'do your homework'. Some don't even both with that.

    • @terrystevens8338

      @@gregparrott true, but the lack of parent engagement is caused mostly by the fact that we are all stuck in the meat grinder aka capitalism and don’t have time or energy after working all day. We can’t just blame parents without looking at the systems that force people to behave the way they do. The homework isn’t exactly set up to be easy for parents to engage with and spark teachable lessons the parents and kids can both enjoy. The entire system is broken. Blaming individual parents for the system failing without funding the system properly is right wing brain rot and helps zero children

I've heard many stories and have even some where their family life would be generously described as subsistence, and that was despite constant work. Yet they engaged with their children enough to instill the importance of education. The children of most parents in that predicament don'r receive that extra 'something'. So, it's about MAKING the time. When in college, I also saw a seemingly cultural trend. I admired Asians, who by and large, were FAR more disciplined at study than I or most of my (white) kind. I've met the extended family of a few Asians. They seemed exemplary in supporting their children's education.

Republicans destroyed public education a generation ago and when you have a generation of parents that were failed by the system long ago they are now unable to accomplish that goal.. many kids have parents that can barely read.. just shaming them isn’t going to fix anything .

    In order to promote conservative notions of free speech, DeSantis is actually curtailing it for students in his state.

    New Zealand's racial divide, between the Maori first colonists and the European settlers from the mid-1800s, has vastly narrowed in the past 30 years precisely because white and Maori Kiwis chose to confront the sins of the past and of the present and resolve them. Still work to be done, but restricting conversations or lessons about race is the surest way to make racial scars permanent and festering. That is of course the point - keep us fighting each other so we don't join together and fight the true enemy, the moneyed elite.

      New NZ HISTORY curriculum has been just introduced to Primary Schools. Always a positive thing for children to learn what life was like for their ancestors, and different ethnic groups in the past. Knowledge and and hearing different perspectives builds empathy. NZ, like many places, has a long way to go. The audacity of any country to ban black history being taught, let's just narrow those children's minds even more.
