My favorite under-the-radar theory is that Mary Linton's much younger "brother" Jamie is actually her and Arthur's illegitimate son. It would explain so much about why her father disdains the boy and despises Arthur, and why she's always so aloof and weird around Arthur despite the fact they clearly still have deep feelings for each other. She also treats him much more like a son than a big sister, calling him "my dear boy" which is a weird thing for a sister to say to a brother. Not to mention that Jamie physically looks quite a bit more like Arthur than Mary's father.

I think the rock carving of "J Brooks" is a reference to the Shawshank redemption, where the Character "Brooks" carves his name into a wooden beam before he kills himself

  • @filmsmadeover-easy1996
    @filmsmadeover-easy1996 6 месяцев назад +22

I think that the strange man and jimmy brooks are two separate entities. The Strange man is The Messenger of Death and Jimmy Brooks is The Messenger of Life. The two men, though connected, couldn't be farther from each other in everyway. The Strange man wears all black. Speaks matter of fact to John though not giving anything away he doesn't want to. Jimmy Brooks is timid, shy, and the most unintimidating looking person you could meet in this time period with a colorful ascot and plaid suit. My thinking is that the two serve a purpose give people a choice in their own way. A choice that will not only effect others but themselves as it's basically is a test to see if people who have done wrong can be redeemed and also a little bit of fun. I also think that the relationship between the two is extremely strict yet distant as it would make sense they would never communicate in person as mortals would, likely telepathically or some other type of supernatural communication. In the encounters with The Strange Man and John he gives John tasks that at the end of the day are basically seeing John's opinion of simple vices of man, and at the end of RDR1, he doesn't die when John shoots him because you can never kill death.
Yet the encounter in RDR2 with Arthur and Jimmy is much more open. Arthur (You) are in control of the situation and have all the power over this weak little man. Life is precious and fragile and can be cut short at any time, so why would the personification of life in this universe not be a skinny city slicker. The clothing of the men also are something I always seem to think about as well as though, not just the colors of what they're wearing, but what they're wearing. They both wear suits. They are BOTH accountants most likely as The Strange man tells John he is and Jimmy gives Arthur a steel pen, which wasn't the most common thing then and really only used by men who worked in those types of jobs. I think that Jimmy Brooks is a being that comes to people who have done terrible things and gives them a choice of saving a poor little man to see who they are when given every opportunity to save a life. Then allowing them to not have to suffer in theirs, never having to be tested by The Strange Man, and die in peaceful way. One hole in this theory is that Arthur dies young and in horrible ways no matter what you do to Jimmy Brooks. Even the ending where he's laying on the cliff looking at the sunrise he'd been suffering with tuberculosis for a good while and had all of his friends either die, betray him, or leave to be safe from the chaos of the gangs end. And he never meets the strange man. I think the reason that The Strange Man never comes to Arthur is for two reasons. If you kill Jimmy then it will give The Strange Man free reign over this persons fate from now on if he so wishes but in most cases like this he porbably wouldnt . The second Reason is because if you save Jimmy, he is elated not only because you saved him but because he can now grant you his blessing and not have to find another form to take. This is Jimmy giving Arthur the pen and when Arthur then says he is not a good man, he kills people, and maybe he should have killed him, this shows Jimmy he was wrong and and gave his blessing to the wrong person. This also brings up the rules between Jimmy and The Strange Man, a person who saves Jimmy Brooks can never be touched by the Strange Man only vaguely hinted at. This is why no matter the choice to save Jimmy or not, the painting will never be clear for Arthur.
I also think Jimmy's dialogue has equally cryptic and odd lines as the Strange Man's has and also comes off and even more ominous if you take this theory into account. When Jimmy says "I never saw you, not now, not never" that's him telling, I never met you and what you did for me means nothing. "I think we have an understanding" is basically Jimmy's way of wiping his hands clean and also taking away the blessing he gives to those who save him. The line "I have not one lick of sense in this old mind" is him saying I was wrong about you, and the line that always made me question the dude's motives was when he gets on his horse and makes a point to look at Arthur and say, "You have a nice day now sir" then hurrying away. This always struck me as odd as any person in that situation would probably get the hell out of there no matter what, not make a point to tell the guy who just threatened to kill you if you don't leave to have a nice day. This to me is Jimmy "breaking character" for a single moment giving us a hint at their true power through cryptic, yet more direct dialogue. In RDR1 the "Yes, many have" when John yells "Damn you" can come off as just vague shit but it really does make you think more on why this man would respond like that to the comment. The line from Jimmy Brooks of "You have a nice day now sir" is him hinting that he knows that Arthur will suffer no matter his choices. The reason then that John never sees Jimmy and only the Strange man is due to again, the rules of the two's roles. If someone saves Jimmy Brooks but is refused his blessing, then at the end of their lives the closest person to them will then be more or less free game for the strange man to have fun with with Jimmy not being allowed to show himself to John clearly if ever at all.
This is why The Strange Man more or less toys with John and gives him tasks that while they might show his morality on little things like sex and money, it doesn't test him in anything that will matter in the long run and will not make a difference in his demise. The Strange Man doesn't need to do this to John, he just enjoys it. It's probably the only thing that ever gave him any joy. He taunts John, insults John, and makes light of terrible events as if they were old friends. The fact John sees a full clear portrait of The Strange Man in the cabin and even sees him in the mirror is most likely why he remembers the face. The reason The Strange Man is being so playful and unserious with John is because he already knows what will happen and wants to have some fun before John goes at least as he was the one that Arthur unknowingly chose who take his place The whole Herbert Moon situation is also something that gives some credit to this theory as it might show the actual deals people who are to encounter The Strange Man get, and also who those people usually are. Herbert Moon is simply a biggoted shopkeeper who we find out if we loot his corpse, cut off his own daughter for marrying and having a child with a Jewish man, which is one of many group Herbert hates. in the shop above his head is a picture of The Strange Man which John comments on and Herbert says he always liked it. In the cabin with the painting obviously is the map of Armadillo with the not saying "I offered you happiness or two generations, you made your choice". This in my opinion is the kind of test and question that The Strange Man would ask to a someone whom he chooses, and I also believe that The Strange Man chooses those who are not as inherently violent as the individuals that Jimmy Brooks chooses, and are much more quiet and insidious with the evil deeds they perpetuate.
In conclusion The Strange Man and Jimmy Brooks are two entities that test those who do a lot of wrong and will either likely die soon or are at a turning point where their life can change for the better or for the worse. They are accountants. Trading and crunching the numbers that are the mortals of our world. Putting it all in order, seeing who belongs where, and with who, and who are those who break the system.

My theory? The only people who WEREN'T rats were Arthur, John, Charles, Sadie, and Jack. I think every one of them made a deal of some sort. And maybe Mrs. Grimshaw. I think everyone gave up something during interrogation at some point, even Hosea, trying to bargain during the failed heist. But I think once they came off the mountain, most of them started looking for exits, especially once everything started going sideways. Arthur's last ride, that's where he finally understood, he could only trust maybe 3 people now. It broke his heart. He gave up and gave himself over. And once lines were literally drawn, anyone could be the "rat". Or whatever. I'm baked and full of funfetti cake.

My theory about the strange man is that he’s Cain from the bible. In the bible it is told that if you harm Cain then you will be harmed 7 times over, John shoots him 3 times and when he dies gets shot 21 times. My theory about him being Jimmy Brooks is that it’s Cain testing Arthur to see if he’s a good person or not, hence why the poem appears about him in the strange man’s house. The picture of the strange man in the house is marked as ‘serial killer’ when you take a picture of it, this is because in the bible Cain killed Abel and technically became the first Serial Killer, Cain also has ‘the mark of Cain’ in the bible which is why John says he looks familiar. Another time where Cain was testing someone was when he theoretically tested Micah as a dog, what might prove this is that Micah (most likely) killed Cain the dog by shooting him once and was then shot by Dutch once and by John six more times (if you have a 6 round revolver) strengthening the theory as that would be seven times over.
    TL:DR
There’s a lot of evidence that the strange man is Cain from the bible.

No. You've found some parallels but it's definitely not Cain because Cain isn't some spirit or supernatural entity that has free reign to do whatever. Strange Man is definitely Death since he's following the gang and all they leave in their wake is just that. Strange Man knew where John was going to be buried. He knew the girl Dutch shot in the head and described how her eye was hanging out of her head, he even has a dead gator underneath the shack he's found at in RDR2. Death is always around when something has died or is scheduled to. This theory comes off as someone not fully understanding the Bible.

Jimmy brooks one makes no sense. the cabin still talks about him if you kill him and it makes no sense how he's Ghost if you chose to kill him. He's a ghost of sorts sure but why is it a stretch to say he knows about Jimmy if he already knows a lot of things?

People continue to misinterpret what the Pinkertons said regarding Micah. No, Micah didn't turned into a rat right when they returned from Guarma, if you go to his hideout on the mountains later on, you would find the wanted poster of Dutch and a few more paper cutouts on it. Besides, him being extremely pushy about doing the ferry job that went sideways is proof enough that he was the rat from the very beginning.

    • @Circiely

Could it be that in exchange for freedom, the Pinkertons (or potentially the O'Driscolles, who later turned to the Pinkertons) sent Micah to infiltrate the Van der Linde gang and had him purposely stage or sabotage high-profile crimes (ex. Black Water) in order to have the gang slip up and be caught? Which is why every mission with him fails in some way (again, Blackwater, Strawberry, the bank, etc.)-not because he was reckless, greedy, or impatient, but because he had planned all along for someone to slip up and be caught. I personally don't want to think of him as some evil mastermind, and I definitely won't, but the number of missions that involve him failing miserably makes me believe a good lot of them were staged to fail.

In regards to the Jimmy brooks theory. Maybe due to him being a devil he can shapeshift? And maybe the reasoning for him acting so differently around arthur is that he offers people moral choices of the extreme. And see’s how they react and adjust accordingly, maybe Jimmy brooks is just a form/persona he took on for Arthur, he says that he saw the gang in blackwater; but there’s nothing to say the gang saw him in blackwater?

My theory is that Micah was a rat from the beggining, but Milton didn't knew about it. Micah wanted two things. He wanted to be rich and to survive. So he made a deal with Edgar Ross. Ross was angry at Milton because he was the main man, Ross was tired of being second-in-command. So he made deal with Micah and haven't told Milton about it. So Micah told him about Ferry in Blackwater, Saint Denis Bank robbery and locations of every gang's camp. And later, after return from Guarma, he saw that Arthur isn't as dangerous as he used to and is getting weaker. So he told Milton about everything and now Pinkertons could work even faster, because nobody had to lie about the source of informations about gang

My theory is the strange man is simply the god of death
He takes any form he needs to to test the morality of those that are soon dying but not with an obvious one sided morality, he takes the form of jimmy brooks to test Arthur because at that time Arthur is morally inconsistent, he then takes his preferred form as the fancy man we all know and love for John to test him as well
I especially think this is true because of the blind fortune teller in rdr2 saying theres two men coming for john, one from this world being agent ross, and one he assumes is from another world that being the mysterious stranger, the other world being whatever is beyond death

In rdr1 javier already runs behind authorities of power and John says to him ‘you left me to save yourself and expect me to care about you!’ ‘You and Dutch went crazy’ ‘how you left me was wrong’. This is literally Micah, if the games were in ordered I’m sure javier would’ve been similar to Micah in rdr2.

Imo micah was already the rat even in St denis . 1st bc ABSOLUTELY Everytime micah is part of a mission something bad happen and 2nd The way he acted during the robery wearing a FULL WHITE VISIBLE suit to get easily spotted by the pinkertoon i mean micah is way more suspicious before guarma when u look into details maybe he wasnt a rat or he played double agent but he certainly interact with pinkertons before AND after guarma. And the mystery man is probably the Death incarnation or more particuly Death incarnation by John perspective since the paint is finished only in the epilogue and it become pretty obvious when john said damn you on his future grave and he answered " many have " that make sense since death often show up too early and ppl just dont want to accept it thats . He showed up to john bc john wasnt ready to die and never showed to arthur bc arthur quickly accepted he was going to die he knew hed die as soon as the time of the wild west and the outlaws was over when john wanted to spend his days whith his family and die old

So a theory i heard somewhere before that i liked is that michah isnt the rat, its really jack that ratted. Think about it. He hates the law. Everything he does is illegal no matter how you look at it. And that no one has a single clue about who the rat is. Someone would notice someone leaving at a weird time or doing something strange or not of their character. But no one thinks that milton or someone could've gotten close to them and lured jack away and asked him a few questions that he a kid wouldnt know he's telling anything he shouldn't.
