john is one of the best artists nobody has heard of. he's written hits for bonnie raitt , clapton, et.al. his audience is comprised of people who can appreciate the depth of his music..
One of the greatest verses ever: The trust of a woman in his hand, but he was a little boy, not a man. You loved him stronger than he could feel. Yeah, he was wrapped up in himself like an orange peel.
This should have 500+ million views after all these years! I was a KFOG intern (iconic SF radio station) in 1995, and the best experiences from that era included working with BB King, Ben Harper and John Haitt. This song has always been a gut punch. I’ve found myself listening to this song, over the years, repeatedly, for an hour straight, when my soul needs it. What a beautiful tribute to these strong & amazing women, John. Looking back, today, I realize that I’ve rooted for you, these women and children for 1/2 of my life, now, and want nothing more than to know that they’re doing well. Thank you, again.
Lucky to have interned for KFOG! Worked at many stations in the SF market, never made it to KFOG...but your point: KFOG was iconic and did play fabulous cuts like this all the time.
that incredible voice, the fresh acoustic guitar and the splendor of the mandolin and the windy saber strikes of the electric guitar upon a solid rhythm section
Okay I had this song in my head for several days now and I couldn’t even figure out the words or WHY! Came here and I know why now. Arrested Development was my favorite show back when it was on tv! I had the dvd sets for years and then Netflix saved the day!

Watching Arrested Development again really gives me a deja vu after just finishing S5 of Community. Both are shows with brilliant writing, ahead of its time, underrated and unjustly cancelled due to network ratings.....and revived by online streaming media. Talk about history repeating itself.
+TheVandrell Well unlike Season 4 of Arrested Development, I actually hated season 6 of Community. It was just...missing the magic. They just pretended nothing happened and continued without Pierce, Troy and Shirley. Same with Season 5.
Exact opposite, I didn't hate Season 4 of AD but found it extremely lacklustre in terms of writing compared to S1-3. I get what Hurwitz was trying to pull of with his 'non-linear character focused format', but ultimately it was a blunder.
One of my favorite songs of all time. What I love most about it (I think) is that the chord progression is one of the most common in all of pop music (the famous "4 chords"), but he splits it into an unbalanced 3/4 rhythm that makes it feel incredibly fresh and innovative.
Yes, doing just that........Been listening for 3 days now. Ordered 3 CD's from Amazon. Heard he has a new one out in 2019 as well and I believe his daughter Lily is in the music scene as well, so looking for her stuff too.
The first time I heard this song, I froze. Very few songs have lyrics that grab you by the throat and make you listen. What an ode to the power and pain of love and the hurt beyond expression that makes you want to scream from the depths of your being "Love did this to me!" But it still works, I have been happily married to the same woman for 44 years!
I think the best part about this song is the timing. There is just something really unique about how this song is composed, and how John sings the chorus a fraction of a second later than the beat. It’s mesmerizing.
FEEL is something that can't really be taught. I mean, it can be, but the singer has to embrace the way they really want to sing a song as opposed to what might be typical or expected. But those subtleties are what make an artist as opposed to just a singer.
It makes me sad that people only know this song from Arrested Development. But it makes me happy that John is getting more popularity through such a great show :)
There are people who only discovered Metallica because of Stranger Things. It doesn't matter where, when or how someone discovers new music. What matters is that they'll never be the same after.
"Cry Love". Lord how that simple phrase sums up just about everything we've created ... and destroyed throughout our lives. Hiatt simply nails it with every word of his lyrics. Damn.
I already feel a bit left of center because "Arrested Development" did not send me here. I just woke up in the middle of the night and MTV was playing this song. I love a few songs for this reason. My stomach began doing that flippy thing like when you drive over a hill lol. What a passionate delivery!!
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️

My undying love for Mr. Hiatt’s music and approachable, easy going personality brought me here. Easily the nicest musician I’ve ever met. I was only 6, and I didn’t know a damn thing about music back then, but you’ve made a bigger impact on my life and short but expanding music career than you could ever know. Thanks for signing my CD and taking the time to talk with me 11 years ago, John.

Never watched arrested Development not an episode. I have been blessed to rock to John Hiatt dozens of live shows but not enough. Also stayed at a Hyatt.
It's kinda sad that a TV show is what it takes for people to learn about John Hiatt. Maybe most folks just don't have the luck to find him walking the streets of Memphis in the 80s. Life was great and life was very tough back then, and he was an intercessor through music. Thanks JH
I grew up listening to this song from my dad playing it a decent amount, I wasn’t even aware this song was in that show, then again I’ve never seen arrested development.
Hiatt, is so powerful with his lyrics, music, the sound a unique strong voice really captivates my heart and soul. Thank you so much John Hiatt, you are so GREAT!!!
A friend of mine sent this to me on a mix CD around 2000. He was a cool guy, introducing all these good singers, bands and tunes. I was singing along when it was used in Arrested Development.
What a strong song and video. Absolutely brilliant but what else would you expect from John Hiatt. May that train of pain stop no more. AMEN, I'm so ready for that train to just keep on moving by.

Thank you, Arrested Development, for this gem that will undoubtedly get stuck in my head at inopportune moments for years to come.

I've lived it.
You are one of the of the only people that complimented him
Nearly broke down first time I paid attention to the lyrics (which happened after many listens). This verse gets me every time.
THE MANTRA OF THE SOCIOPATH.
Unfortunately, so have I.
great freaking songwriter. years and years of brilliant songs.
have been lucky to have seen him twice in concert. once with lyle lovett - amazing concert the two of them playing together.

One of the most accurate portrayals, lyrically, of abuse. Incredible and devastating song.

But I still love the show for the first 3 seasons.
And now many comedies use the format. Those shows helped put the awful sitcom and its canned laughter in the grave, where it always should have been.
