"... but this was a marriage of spirit, of flesh and bone..." Those are among the saddest lyrics ever written... A song of love for grownups, and uplifting despite it's sadness. Simply perfect.
One of the greatest singer songwriters of our time. This is a wonderful song with a depth of message rarely found in music today. He has been to the places he sings about. I've been there too.
John Hiatt is one of the most under appreciated singer songwriters of our time. He's quite gifted. Of course, not everyone "gets" him. Listen to his other work and his songs covered by other signers. "Have a little faith in me" is one of the most covered songs in recording history. He's great but highly underrated.
Thank you, thank you to the Arrested Development fans who posted here. I heard this song right before a concert last night, and I'm sorry to say that I completely forgot what it was from. I love this song, though I kind of forgot about it, and I've been wracking my brain all day trying to remember where I first heard it. Now I want to watch Arrested Development.
I couldn't agree with you more, trublgrl!! This song was my introduction to John Hiatt...I just had to know all the lyrics and how fantastic and well written they were!! my favorite...."one day the train of pain won't stop no more" and "the heart won't remember the burning fire the next time you feel the flames of desire."....PRICELESS!!!
I've only just discovered John Hiatt, so it's all new to me. I love making these discoveries and getting psyched over some great 'new' music, this guy is unreal.
I love this song. Just watching Arrested Development and this song pops up. I haven't heard it in so long. I forgot about it and it is now on my iPod. :-) iPod were not around when this tune hit.
Just saw John Hiatt last night in Dallas (Grand Praririe actually). What a great show, and I had neevr heard this song before. His guitarist was named Doug Lancio and was simply amazing. I have to go buy some more Hiatt CD's.
He used to play austin at least a couple time a year. Great show. Stubb's or La Zona Rosa..10 little indians..is a gem and nowhere to found on youtube.
I saw Hiatt for the first time this past Tuesday at Meridian's MSU Riley Center, and he rocked out. you're right, his guitarist was amazing. what john call him, the king of all thing strings? Sweet concert.
Is it me, or does it seem like unless someone else sings his songs, everything Hiatt does gets overlooked? I wouldn't have even seen this video if RUclips didn't exist!
the 'version' on AD was edited to fit certain points in the show, so it's the same original material but they edited it a bit to highlight certain story points
I love that even though this clip itself had nothing to do with arrested development originally..... the chat here continues to be a mix of both hiatt and AD love.... hehe
A moment of steel, a dry eyed house Did he say goodbye to you, or did you kick him out I know you're not afraid to go alone But this was a marriage of spirit, flesh and bone Now what you gonna do when the planets shift What you gonna do, gonna slit your wrists Bleed all over the milky way The stars in your eyes look red today.... ......The heart won't remember the burning fire The next time you feel the flame of desire
Woah, this song has a 12 beat phrase that's pretty damn catchy! I came up with a similar riff and thought it was pretty unique. You find it in African music often (check Thomas Mapfumo ), but I never heard a pop song do it so well till now.
@tacofreshify Thank you! Your comment prompted me to pick up the ol' Les Paul and I found the beat in the key of C. Outstanding tune! And thanks RUclips, too.
If men would act like men (and fathers) instead of like selfish children, women could be the mothers and wives they are meant to be... and the children would all be better off.
"Wow - the male/female social discussion/drama in the comment body is way more interesting than the song." Wrong! I am mystified that you would denigrate John Hiatt's obvious talent... This is a truly outstanding song. He is one of the best song writers alive today. Not to mention his amazing voice...
@arothmanmusic if you dont know about john hiatt...you should check him out - a true american treasure...check out albums STOLEN MOMENTS, WALK ON, SLOWTURNING, BRING THE FAMILY, PERFECTLY GOOD GUITAR to name a few
@rogerrrubin .......You loved him stronger than he could feel But he was wrapped up in himself like an orange peel Now what you gonna do with the bruise and the blush What you gonna do when there's no rush Cop a little misery at the corner store Well one day that train of pain won't sthrowing up ashes on the floor If this is a lesson in love, well what's it for The heart won't remember the burning fire The next time you feel the flame of desire
"... but this was a marriage of spirit, of flesh and bone..."
Those are among the saddest lyrics ever written...
A song of love for grownups, and uplifting despite it's sadness. Simply perfect.
Whenever I've made a huge mistake, I always come back to this song.
Works every time.
John Hiatt is one of the greatest songwriter/composers of our lifetime. He should be in the R&R Hall Of Fame
One of the greatest singer songwriters of our time. This is a wonderful song with a depth of message rarely found in music today. He has been to the places he sings about. I've been there too.

A song that seems to grow every time you hear it- lets hope that our future song writers are taking note note of this brilliant singer/song writer.

To our children's children's children we can evolve ... just Cry Lover pour your love over every child!!!
I'm a big fan of Arrested Development. But the greatness of this song supersedes even AD. John Hiatt is amazing, saw him live a week, amazing...
Wow, i wasn't expected this many AD fans to be on this video. That's awesome.
One of the best songs ever by one of the best artists ever. Thanks for putting that up.
I was watching Arrested Development the other day and this got stuck in my head - glad I was able to find it by Googling the lyrics. Great stuff.

Don't laugh, but I recently heard this song and was blown away....time to look into his archive!!!
His vocals are what raise this song to a higher level. Raspy, earnest, sincere, makes my body move in time, leaves me wanting more.
Amongst the most beautiful tunes of all time.
I listen to this song every day. It helps me from goin' crazy. Whatchuall goin' to do when this planet shifts
'Nuf said. The dude's a true American treasure.

Another song is "Gonna get together" by Leroy. Not sure if that's the one you're talking about though.
I love arrested development!

If you had read any of the comments, you would have known that this song was in a few episodes of Arrested Development.
I miss arrested development, the whole show was just perfect
If men would act like men (and fathers) instead of like selfish children, women could be the mothers and wives they are meant to be... and the children would all be better off.
hahahaha just watched it yesterday
Some of the more astute among us have discovered him. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm a better person for it.
Agree!
"Wow - the male/female social discussion/drama in the comment body is way more interesting than the song."
Wrong! I am mystified that you would denigrate John Hiatt's obvious talent... This is a truly outstanding song. He is one of the best song writers alive today. Not to mention his amazing voice...

HAHAHAHAHA! All these comments about Arrested Development are just a testament for how epic of a show it was. Ta-da!
Do you like Jackson Browne lyrics? I LOVE the best song writers!
lol It's GOB!!
You did obviously, since you asked the question.
The small intestine saved GOB.
Shall I send you the emails and letters he sent me? What about transcripts of our phone calls? A detailed version of what happened?
the same thing with me, but don't they use a slightly different version of the song on AD?
I'm here for a magician named Gob hahaha
I'm an ideas man, Michael. I think I proved that with Fuck Mountain.
"...I'm....white...I've made a huge mistake."
Classic A.D.
Check out Mary Ann Redmond's amazing cover of this song here on youtube.
