  • Canasta! Welcome, everyone. I'm here to talk to you about the first Feis Ile bottle that I've been able to taste, Bunnahabhain Canasta cask at 51.2% ABV.
What is Canasta? A blending of the Palomino grape and the Pedro Ximinez grape varities, the former producing a classically off-dry sherry, the latter producing a ridiculously sweet, rich sherry that is the equivalent of alcoholic diabetes.
Bunnahabhain has matured their spirit in this sherry type and have produced this cocoa powder and orange oil soaked spirit, with all of those classic, salty, sweet Bunnahabhain smells and tastes.

No problems. The guy at Bunna said that generally for cream sherry you mix the PX and Olorosso at the end but Canasta is mixed and then put through the bodega system instead of after. I was blown away by the creaminess of this. It was definitely a great whisky and different to what I have had in the past.

Very interesting Bunna covering a wide range of sensations. The cognac/orange oil references would definitely draw me towards this expression. Great review. Can see this being a classic in time. Good to see distilleries thinking outside of the norm.

I actually bought a bottle at Heathrow World of Whisky yesterday. It was £95 there, but I was heading back to the States so it was my best chance to get one. Looking forward to trying it after your review.

I had no idea that Travel Retail got hold of these bottles. Hope the trip back was safe. Enjoy!

Great review and delighted you enjoyed it so much. It’s 2014 distilled and sister casks to the 6yo Maturation Warehouse Canasta Single Cask at 61% which proved a huge hit a couple of years back. I regularly quote Chocolate Orange when I’m forced into tasting notes 😂, particularly on the 18 for me. 🤷‍♂️🥃 Regarding Canasta, it’s probably about the only Cream Sherry where the makers, which is Williams & Humbert, take the Palomino & PX juice of the cellar master’s choosing and marry them before it works down through the Solera system as one combined juice. Yes, I fell into a Sherry Hole a few years ago! 😂
    Slàinte from Bunnahabhain, David. 😁👍🥃

Hi great review as always. Would you pick this over the 2023 cask strength 12? Only have room to order 1 hence this query. Ty.

Haven't tried the '23 yet, but I'd honestly get this just to have something different.

If I see it I definitely will buy it. Sounds interesting enough. Haven't had the opportunity to get the festival releases because they tend to be way overpriced. Around 100 isn't too bad I guess. Lol

Hmm this does sound tasty! I loved the 2021 Feis Ile release 8 year old Moine Bordeaux but that was the only Feis Ile Bunna I had so I think I need to try more. Cheers!

Not too shabby, Phil, and I'm not talking about your shirt.😉
Sorry to nit-pick, but: Moscatel *can* be sherry. I know, we (English-speakers) think of sherry as a *type* of fortified wine, but actually the word sherry is just the anglicisation of Jerez (in French Xérès), or in full from the town of Jerez de la Frontera. Moscatel grapes grown in the Jerez D.O. region are therefore bottled and sold with the Jerez D.O. (classification/appellation) on the label, and therefore *are* sherry, even though we maybe don't *think* of it as a sherry in the sense of e.g. (Palomino-made) Manzanilla, Fino, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, Oloroso, etc., or Pedro Ximenez. And that's also why grapes made using the exact same methods (e.g. solera system, flor yeast, etc.) as are used in Jerez, but from another part of Spain, aren't called sherry but rather something else, e.g. Malaga. So the word sherry is about provenance or geography more-so than method/technique, even though there are also rules about method/technique wrapped up in the concept as well.
A good example of Jerez Moscatel to try is from Lustau Emilin. It tastes/smells very much of that thing you say you don't like: fruit-/Xmas cake, complete with all the raisined/dried fruit ingredients in same. Muscatel raisins, anyone?
Moscatel grapes can also be used to make other fortified wines/styles that are more like French Vin Doux Naturel, and there's a whole range of possible techniques/styles available.
Anyone who likes sherry-influenced whiskies I would encourage to learn just a little bit about wine(s) simply for expanding one's knowledge/info., even if one doesn't like to drink the stuff.😧

The volume of ads showing up now per video is starting to be as off putting as contemporary pricing. Maybe not quite as much, but I guess both are somewhat a product of the era we are in. Unfortunate, it is. I will go yell at clouds now.

Hmmm, this is odd as I set the ads to just one before the video. Would that change based on the length of the video?
