I agree that patience is his greatest asset but I do not (frankly) understand the straw ash and mud part and what effect they have on the finished product..

このやり方も何年も何年も修行して身につけた技術でほんとに凄いと思うけど、プレス機？見たいのでやってる人と全てトンカチで作ってる人を比べたらなんかなと……
高速帰宅部 まぁ1人だけでやってる場合もあるしトンカチでする人も入ればプレス機(？)で作る人も居ますしね......人それぞれです( '-' )

鉄粉、ホウ酸、ホウ砂等人によって分量は違いますが
鍛接する際の酸化皮膜を溶かす粉です
出てきてると思いますよ結構ポピュラーなんで

what is the white stuff that he is useing
Flux. Probably borax (sodium tetraborate). Absorbs slag, prevents oxidation, ensures the welds come out clean.
maybe Borax .; But Ground bottle glass to a powder makes a very good Flux . mixed with Fine white sand .
yeah most likely borax, we use it when we heat metal to prevent oxidation.
