    Excellent video...explanation of vital measurements very clear & clear. I'm going to change timing chain & components on my sister's 2010 CR-V.
    Also check valve lash clearances.
    The rod length measurement is great too (chain tensioner..not husband's)

    I am currently into my 2012 cr-v's K24's valve cover to replace the rattling VTC actuator. But, I am halfway expecting the chain to be elongated. It only has 125k miles, but the rattling actuator is known to pulverize the chain & tensioner. Your video here has given me a wealth of information for inspecting the chain and some other things as well!

Every time i get all the timing marks lined up guides all tight i spin the engine around i cant seem to get the marks to line up again.I make sure its TDC i even put allen wrench in cam holes to lock the cams.I even double check everything and they never line back up again.How many complete turns is it on the cam gears before i would see my marks again? What im i doing wrong.I thought i had it 3 or 4 times now.Please help

    • @CARtastrophe365
      @CARtastrophe365  6 лет назад

      If you're trying to get the colored links on the chains to line up on the marks on the cam gears don't hold your breath, I have no idea how many revolutions that would take. The major take away is when cylinder 1 is TDC the crank will be at TDC, the cam gear marks will line up and the holes in the back line up. This will happen every 720 degrees o every 2 revolutions of the crankshaft. Hope this helps brother!

    There is a lot of headache involved in this job. The crank pulley bolt will be first. Just did my customer's 05 CRV timing chain, guides, valve cover gaskets, etc yesterday and took the entire day. The worse part is getting the cover back on without getting the Honda Bond Silicone all over everything.

    • @CARtastrophe365
      @CARtastrophe365  6 лет назад

      You got that right brother, it's very helpful to have a second pair of hands to try to help guide that thing back into place. The worst is when you go to bolt it back on and realize that the VTC actuator connector is BEHIND the timing cover! My apprentice liked to do that quite a bit, once he was ready to run it before he noticed.
      Thanks for the nice feedback brother!

    hello, thank you for this video! I just did a ton of work to this honda crv and now im worried the motor might be bad, it runs super smooth but when you rev it with quick burst it make what sounds like either a chain slap or my worst fear a bottom end noise (its so hard to differentiate) Ive read alot about these engines having a cold start rattle from vtc (but i dont have any cold start rattle) at idle its like a sewing machine, 140,000 miles on the car, i see that metal piece in the timing cover you said the chain could have hit, have you ever seen the chain stretch enuf to hit that metal?? i know on other engines the chain can stretch so much it eventually hits the valve cover and makes a noise, i just didnt know if hondas can do something similar, its only when i rev it quickly to like 4-5 k rpms. thanks sorry for long post

  • @gtrx7510
    @gtrx7510 6 лет назад +1

    Quick question, I know you said for rod length on the new timing chain tensioner with new chain is 3.9mm-6.0mm but I am concerned about the chain jumping a tooth as I've heard of few instances where timing jumped after the install. It looks like some people add 1 or 2 clicks to the tct. I have a kswap k24a2 Integra stock motor and I just replaced the timing chain and tensioner myself and am unsure where to set the tension at, the car is a dd. Love the video very informative and helpful!

    • @CARtastrophe365
      @CARtastrophe365  6 лет назад

      Some people try to push on the timing chain arm a bit to get another click out of the tensioner, I never did that myself. It's really up to you, depends on what will allow you to sleep at night. Once the motor is running the oil pressure will tension the chain properly, so I never worried about it. But I also never used after market parts, if you used OE stuff I wouldn't worry.

I feel like jacking the engine up or lowering it about 3" to clear above or under the frame rail would be too much deflection for the engine mounts to take. How do I get the bolt out of the bracket that attaches to the timing chain cover??

    • @CARtastrophe365
      @CARtastrophe365  6 лет назад +2

      I think this one had maybe 110,000 miles. Theoretically though you should never need to replace the chain. I have seen them with 300,000 miles on the original chain. As long as you keep good clean oil in it you should be ok. You'll know it's started to stretch when you set a check engine code P0340, or P1009, those are the most common two codes for the chain. Try not to worry about it brother!

    • @chizniky
      @chizniky 6 лет назад +1

      The more I researched it, I agree there's no need to worry about it. I've owned it since it had 10k on it. I hate it as a suv and as a car. Tons of hesitation in the v-tec, AWD system works to a point, road noise almost makes you want to wear headphones, and the body roll is horrendous. The reliability though has been perfect. Not one single problem in 7 yrs. Ready to sell this thing and get a real 4wd vehicle. I'm glad that I don't have to mess with the chain. I want everything up to date when I sell it, so someone can put another 100k on it. Thanks for the reply.

      My CRV which I thought was bulletproof acted up last night. 2010 102,000 miles only. First crank ever that it didn't start, 2nd crank and it sounds like no compression, shit! It's had the VTC startup rattle for over a year, didn't think something like this would happen though. After talking with 2 Honda friends this stuff sounds all too common. Highly doubt it jumped a bunch of teeth and bent valves, I'll be digging into it soon. Hope parts aren't on intergalactic backorder like the BS at Ford Dealers haha (used to work at Ford for 15yrs) Great informative video btw.

    how do you line up the oil pump chain it has black links on it to i cant find anything on it on the web for that one only the main timing chain I have a K24 motor unless that chain dont matter? thanks for your help

    • @CARtastrophe365
      @CARtastrophe365  6 лет назад

      Hey Dave! So there is a timing mark on that oil pump. The keyway (dowel) for the pump gear lines up with a little arrow just past 12 o'clock on the oil pump housing. This is assuming you didn't spin the pump around a bunch without the chain on of course. So if the dowel lines up with the arrow and the crank is at TDC then the chain goes on any way it can, the tension is set manually, spring style. If you get it out of time you won't hurt anything, it might just vibrate.
      There is also a dowel in the pump body that you can install a special tool, but I doubt you have that. I usually never worried about replacing that chain when I worked at the dealer, it's so small, it has such a good wrap on the gears, and it doesn't do much work so in my mind it doesn't wear out very much.
      Fair warning though, I have heard of those chains breaking but it is VERY rare. Good luck man!

    • @CARtastrophe365
      @CARtastrophe365  6 лет назад
