- What is up everyone! Welcome to my channel, my name is Tyler but most know me as the geode cracker and collector! I do a TON of geode collecting all over the Midwest, and during this collecting trip I decided to make this highly requested video.. HOW TO SPOT A GEODE!!
I take you hands on into the creeks of southern Indiana to show you the signs and indicators of prime geode collecting terrain, what other types of rocks you should expect to find while hunting geodes (to help in identifying a rock as a geode) and what the most common textures and exteriors you should look out for while geode hunting! Keep these tips in mind next time you’re out hunting, and you should have no problem finding yourself some GEODES!!
If you have any questions at all after watching, please share them in the comments section below and I’ll do my best to answer everyone in a timely manor!
If you are new to the channel, and this video helped you out, please consider subscribing and checking out my other content!!

geodes are really really cool to stumble upon and collect in theory BUT IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS since you never know when it could be a geodude sleeping amongst the rocks.. this channel is giving a false representation of the dangers involved with hunting geodes.. please be careful and do not search for geodes unless you are prepared to come across a very angry geodude from pokemon, thank you and stay safe friends!!
Best comment by far 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I knocked a geode on what I thought was another geode. It was Geodude and Rolled Out at me. Almost drowned in that stream.
Seriously....i actually read and got nervous till the end
Geode, nonsensical geodude either or, I need to breed my Allay and I’m sure it will like it
I'm a Team Mystic Pokémon Master. I got this! Lol.
A couple years ago, me and my friend went to a place where Geodes are found ALL THE TIME. So there were hundreds of them just sitting there, we then picked up one, it was a very huge one. We then opened it up, and inside it was a beautiful dark amethyst Geode.
What place?

please do share! 😊
This video was randomly suggested in my feed. I watched it which led to other geode or agate videos and now I find myself googling rock hunting in Memphis, Tn where I live. Im 37 and I’m feeling like a kid about to go Easter egg hunting. 😁
Tennessee has got some amazing things there! Geodes, agates, jaspers!
@@GeodeCrackerCollector I can’t wait! 😁
Same here.
It's like eating really good food when you find a good spot! Happy hunting
Out here in the foothills of the Ozarks, here in missouri, they are everywhere and I do mean everywhere !! I thought they were common everywhere, because I've been born and raised here! Heck I probably run over at least two thousand of them every day just pulling in and out of my gravel drive way! Wow .....the things we take for granted without even realizing it never ceases to amaze me.😇
Nature is pretty dang cool! 🤘🏻🔥
I'm in Kansas City, do you think there are some here too?
That's awesome to hear! I recently started rock collecting and look forward to finding some!
Same found nice rocks in my own yard.
@@jamielacerte9806 yes we have them here in KC, but not nearly as many as in northeast Missouri! You can find them in most local creeks and small rivers if you dig in the sediment deposits, especially around exposed tree roots. Also look for walls of shale on the sides of the bank, that's a key indicator that geodes may be nearby that have been washed out by erosion.
I found a geode purely by accident as a kid, mixed into a bunch of gravel. It looked like most all the other gravel, (smooth and worn like river rock) but it had a small hole in it, and you could see the crystals inside. No idea where it ended up, all these years later.
That’s awesome! I found a rouge geode when I was a kid and I’ve been hooked ever since! I’m actually planning to revisit that spot soon and search for more!
I took it when we were children and I knew you wouldn't remember when you wrote this LOL
Crazy because that's when I am now on table rock lake where I found two very round rocks. One is about 50lbs and I cant wait to discover what's inside
Oh yes Siri I live in Missouri and they are everywhere even in a Walmart parking lot. Lol as you said they are everywhere.
Awww man. I know that this is probably not how you should take care of a geode but when I was a kid I used to hv a mini wood treasure box and found all my rocks that I used to save in there as a kid. And I went to my storage unit and found all my old sea shells that I used to collect as kid. (You know when there used to sand dollars and all kind of shells at the beach). They were in a smaller bag in a box. And in that bag, I for some reason, put my geodes in there. I can't believe nothing got broken. So I would just check the most unobvious place that you wouldn't put it.
When I was 8 or 9, I was at the mountains with my grandparents and I was cracking rocks when I randomly found a geode. I was so excited! It’s been nearly 7 years and I still have it on my shelf with my other gems
What state did you find it and what color was the geode
There's a place outside Payson, Arizona named "geode hill" & when you get there, the ground is littered with one geode after the other!!😁 Y'all, I was in a place that my rock hounding heart was in heaven!!💕
Do u pay to take them home or is it free
@@amyblasdell6039 Well, I didn't see a sign saying anything about paying anything! 😁
@@ashleybonanno3043 that's awesome my two year old will love this
Fellow Hoosier here. Isn't it interesting that they resemble brains and they conduct energy via the crystals? Creator gives us so much to explore.
Whos they
why do i always find other hoosiers on every platform lolol
Conduct what kind of energy?
@@dirkdiggler3974 are you saying that they conduct electricity? And how does this make it so that they can "resemble brains"
I used to collect rocks as a kid, I once collected a geode without even realizing I collected a geode. I always thought it looked so cool. now I know why I was so intrigued by it😭
I Just recently moved up here to Losantville, Indiana. From Florence Arizona. There's so many geodes and crystals up here. In my own backyard too. Love it. Subscribe to this man. He is correct on everything he shows us. And I'm living proof.
i recently found a geode in a bunch of limestone gravel, it was already cracked in half when i found it and i imagine its other half was mixed into the rest of the gravel. ive always wanted to collect them directly from nature but where i am geodes aren't very common.
Rogue geodes are the best! First one I found was a rogue one!
This is great! Very detailed, but the details are right to the point. I love that you pointed out the sound of them, too.
I like how you are showing people how to find geodes in your area, thanks for sharing!
This looks just like the creek me and my sister used to play in in southern Indiana, probably a good thing I didn't know there was geodes in it cause I already picked up enough rocks lol
I spend a lot of time fossil hunting where I am, this will be a cool new thing to keep my eyes out for while hunting! Thanks for the tips, really appreciated the audio quality of hearing the geodes. You can hear a little bit of the hollow sound when you bang them together.
The geode that you find in N.M. is like a round river stone , that when cut open will have crystals inside. Some will be white or clear, and others will be colored like blue crystals. The centers are hollow with a smooth outer shell. The outside just looks like a round rock to me, as I do not know that much about geology. We do have a college of mining technology, but it is on the western side of the state at Socorro N.M. We do have a lot of rocks to study, and a lot of mines.
Oh yea New Mexico has a TON of stuff!! Not super familiar with their geodes though, I’ll have to do some research!
Very informative and easy to watch. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Wow! Looks like so much fun!
Thank you for the informative video. My wife loves geodes and I want to suprise her by going Geode hunting when it warms up a little.
Indiana is a LONG drive from Alabama. Dang. That's awesome! I have found 2 in my yard, and they're treasure. ❤️
From now on it should be mandatory to start a video about rocks with hard rock! Great intro!!!
Thank you!
I've been grabbing geodes while hiking and earlier this week I found one buried that looked really big. I tried to dig it out at the time but I couldn't so today I went back with a shovel and got it, its HUGE. Its about 5 inches thick but 18 inches around and almost a perfect circle. I had to lug it about a mile and a half back down the trail and when I got home I weighed it and it was 54 pounds. Totally worth it, I'm going to strip it with acid and its the centerpiece of my collection.
PS if you are in southern IN, I have been getting mine from the Jefferson Memorial Forest in Louisville, from the back side of the siltstone trail.
Woah that's HUGE, I wish I could even find normal sized geodes near me but I'm nowhere near a spot that has even a chance of having a few small geodes
@@imacubfan2 That particular one is definitely the largest I've found, most are 3 to 4 inches across, some 8 to 10. There's so many out there too, I was back in the park a few days ago and the weather over the winter exposed a whole new crop of them. I hope you find some, its a lot of fun to go on the hunt for them and you never know what you might find.
I love collecting rocks!! I am from Indiana but live on the state line of Illinois now. But go back nearly daily to swim in the creek and check for rock treasures!
I like geode hunting after a good rains. Rain washes away whatever was hiding. .😊
I'm going to Pinetop-lakeside in Arizona from this Saturday to next friday, this really helps in the rockhounding I plan on doing. Thank you!
Heck yeah dude, so many good pointers!
Well done sir, you have natural ability to teach.
Thank you so much! That means a lot! I love to teach others the things that I’ve learned so it makes it all worth it to have folks gain knowledge from the things I share!
i was simply curious about the geology and learned so much!!! thanks
Thanks for the Tips... Greatly appreciated!! You Rock! 😎
Awesome, awesome video. Makes me want to move out there lol. Thanks for sharing.
I love busting these open! I've made videos of the ones that come from nat geo but never found any myself. Now I'll know what to look for, thanks!
This was very helpful to watch! I’m new to the world of Geodes and am hoping to look for some when the weather warms up. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I was working in Washington, Ind., and there is a house on the northwest side of town that has an entire wall made of geodes cemented together. It is a low wall, but it is on a corner lot and the wall extends down both sides of the lot. It is an older home too, maybe 1940s era, probably wouldn't be permitted with modern building/lot codes.
That’s awesome!! There’s a whole house/building made of geodes somewhere in Indiana too!
Great video, thank you. I'll keep an eye out from now on.
I loved collecting geodes and fossils when I was a kid and lived in Oolitic, Indiana.
Thank You for Sharing your knowledge with Much Respect 🦅 Sending Positive Thoughts & Blessing My Friend ✌🕊
What a treasure trove. 💎
Great video! Short to the point and filled with list of great information on geodes!
Thanks! That’s what I was going for so glad to hear I was on the right track with this video!
Pretty straightforward! Thanks for the info!
Congratulations on 800 👍🏼 The geodes where I’m at are very similar they really stick out. There’s more chert in the Missouri creeks but some of that’s cool too! Some nodules are hollow like geodes
Where in Missouri?

You are doing a fantastic job on geodes and i love the channel.
Hi! Great video! Never looked or found geids before. We were in North Carolina on the shore, and there was some old fill/erosion stones from landscaping. I found geods! Wish i could post pics!
Ty for video

Ever come to Tucson in the first week of February? The gem shows will blow your Rock loving mind! (I’m lucky, I live here and am a jeweler…I go every year. Lots of eye candy but it can kill the savings account!)
Not yet but I’ll make it there someday!
A crude but highly informative video, very enjoyable
Found your video much more helpful than all the other ones I watched. I'm in WV and I'm near a limestone mine. I know we have quartz along our rivers, but I'm still not sure exactly where to go or how to find them. This gave me a better idea of where to go and what to look for than any other video. And I even bought that Gaia app to try to find them. 😂 Greatly appreciate your help and wisdom. If you have any tips for hunting quartz or finding crystal veins away from the river and creek beds I would love it! But this was great help. Happy Hounding Fam!🖤🥰🙏
I’m so glad!! I’ll be creating more helpful videos like these as I go to new locations this spring and summer! I can definitely try and get some crystal finding information!
Sweeeet! Thanks very helpful!
Whoa! The energy is high! Get some.
Woah! Super interesting. I keep reading all the comments, and how geodes are just everywhere! In Montana where I live, you have to buy them lol. You find lots of quartz all around though. I once found a quartz that had amythisit in it! No idea where it is now, but super cool!
Ever been to South Dakota? Rose quartz is their state rock, and in the Black Hills (including Custer State Park), rose quartz is *EVERYWHERE*!! Whether it's in smaller pieces on hike trails or gigantic specimens half-buried in the side of a hill -- pieces big enough to sit on during said hikes -- that is the stone you'll find in huge quantities. 😁😁
And let me tell you -- hiking in that park is not for the faint of heart or lung. Take an inhaler with you if asthma is a thing, for sure. But all the same, rockhounding there can be turned into a helluva workout. 😅
@@a.katherinesuetterlin3028 WOW! Rose quartz is so cool! I should definitely go and check it out! Have a great day/ night!
@@Vanilla_BlueDraws Oh, and if you camp in Custer Park (which I highly recommend), be sure to not only listen for owls and the occasional raven, but get a gander at the tall cedar trees and the sap that's sometimes on the outside of the bark. Break off a chunk. Not only does it smell insanely good on its own, but if you have a lighter, light a bit of the edge. The scent intensifies as the sap melts. Plus the cedar branches and needles on the ground make for great kindling. Yeah, I'm a Pagan-ish nature nerd. 😅😜
@@a.katherinesuetterlin3028 LOL! In Montana there are some really pretty lakes, like one of them is Storm Lake near Anaconda. It's really hard to get there, and you have to have a good car for that sort of thing, but it's so worth it!
@@Vanilla_BlueDraws In other words: have a really rugged SUV type vehicle. 😜
I live on a flat island and there’s not a big variety of rocks but this was really cool to watch still. If I happen to travel maybe I’ll be able to find something!
Good luck!
Heyyyyy thanks this was great info, I have sent to many others, short, sweet and to the point :) love this, cheers (gal from oz)
Thanks for sharing it! I appreciate it! Short sweet and to the point was my goal 🤘🏻
I am very glad i found your vdeo i am intrested in crystals and rocks and this helped me a lot

Great and useful information .
Lake Monroe is a fantastic place to find sulfur geodes.
Interesting and wonderful video! Thanks!
Thank you. That's awesome
this is very cool and informative, thanks
Hey man! I love this Video!! I live in Columbus indiana and used to travel over to lake Monroe all the time and there's this road called swartz ridge road that you turn down and it leads you to a creek bed that looks a lot similar to this particular one and it's just loaded with geodes! They're a really beautiful rock I just subscribed to your channel man! 😄

Great video!
you're crazy for this i love you
My BFF'S live in Chandler IN. I love it there!
Man, I wish it was as easy as that in my area of So. Oregon!
There ARE places with sedimentary geodes here, but they aren't typically as easy to spot, as the whole area contains tons of various silicates. They call it the Agate Desert for a valid reason. We find agate from veins, seams, voids, and casts, and geodes in what used to be volcanic ash, but there's also lots of jasper, common opal, and cherty materials, plus petrified wood that might be replaced with any silicate. A lot of our gravel is granite/ diorite, andesite, and basalt, so our geodes are often found fragmented.
Still makes for great pickin', though!
Good video....made me wanna go get my boots wet soon. 😎
Oh holy moly! What a smorgasbord of minerals!
My driveway had a large vein of geodes when I bought an old log cabin. They were at the bottom of a hill that had been cut into. I found them in Brown County Indiana.
Brown county has some of the BEST Indiana geodes I’ve heard!

There is a very rare gem benitoite which is CA state gem and one mine in San Benito County...only comes from a couple places in the world. That's what I got my sights fixed on.

As a kid I found a really big geode (50 cm+) of white quarz which would be worth quite a lot, but couldn't take it home, because it was during a school trip and a teacher told me to go back and didn't listen to explanations. If she knew, she would steal it from me anyway. Such a sad childhood story from Eastern Europe. Thank you for the video, now I can find a new one and heal a childhood trauma 😅
Btw based on my limited experience - if a stone is big and you can lift it, then it's definitely worth checking.
If there worth a lot please tell me where to sell because I can hook any one up with all the geodes the can handle different sizes shapes it's a mystery what the inside color will be Purple is the hardest to find I don't know the age of them but I have one with fossilized bone you can see and feel on both sides Some with plant fossils. I live in the mountains of TN and found really rough feeling rocks but somehow have seashell fossils on them
OMG SO COOL! Where is that stream? My family might be taking a trip to Indiana and I would LOVE to pick up some geodes!
Magnificent video! In Victorville, California, in the high desert, would you happen to know where, and how, to find geodes? Thanks again for your entertaining videos!
New subscriber. Cool channel. Love rockhounding since I was a kid, and crystals, always still learning. I loved some of the druzy you found in your I think agate?/blue laced geode..very beautiful. Do you find any geodes with celestite or very sparkly quartz? The flat rocks by any chance were some of those feldspar?
I love how he just throws the rocks
Brilliant explanation buddy
Thank you!

Terre Haute here. Excited about exploring N. Cali this Oct. Your tips will help me hunt. Relieved there's more than limestone in Indiana! 🤣
Geodes remind me of gremlin balls or invasion of body snatchers, no?
Great info... Thanx
enjoyed seeing the finds
Nice video !!!
How do you decide which ones to keep/take?
At 4:09, I found some of those small geodes in my yard. They are solid as you've said. Do you know what's inside? Is it worth cutting? do you have any samples of what it looks like inside? I'm in Mo. I'm wondering if it could be chert. Thank you.
Talk to a tax attorney about how to write off a Great Lakes cruise to Thunder Bay, Ontario and film a special about collecting amethyst vugs! The pieces I’ve seen are amazing. I’m betting the IRS is flexible with their definition of “crew”!
I’ve tried doing research on if there are geodes near me and where to go but I can’t find ANYTHING online about it.. what should I type into search bar? I’ve looked up “geode belts near me” and everything is just telling me what types of gemstones can be found but doesn’t say WHERE to look
I would love to go on a big hunt myself.
Hello, I have a couple of questions.
I live in Costa Rica , and I have not seen geodes in rivers ever, is there a particular climate or geological conditions , CR is highly volcanic could that be the reason why there are not geodes or at least I have not seen them ?
And how do you crack a geode if you don’t have one of those big chain presses?
Thanks!
Once you find the geodes, how do you break them open do see the crystal?
They are everywhere! (If you are in a creek in Indiana. Otherwise, not so much.)
Where are most geodes spotted are they near rivers or near moist areas or on a street? Would you find them at buffalo hills?
