    The 01 lakers shot 15 threes a game. The 2017 warriors shot over 30 a game. The Lakers made 36% of their threes. The warriors shot TWICE AS MANY at a HIGHER PERCENTAGE.
    When it comes to defending Shaq, it's not about one guy. It's about having the right COLLECTION of personnel. Javale McGee is one part of the equation. So is Zaza, David West, and Draymond. Every guy is putting in effort.
    Also, the argument that the Lakers in 01 ran an offense closer to a modern day offense in the playoffs is ludicrous. They ran at a pace of 92 possessions per 48 minutes that postseason. The 2017 warriors ran at a 100 possession pace. The lakers shot around 16 threes a game that postseason making 38.6%. the warriors in 2017 shot DOUBLE the amount and hit THE SAME PERCENTAGE. The lakers shot with a true shooting percentage of 54.2%. the 17 warriors were OVER 60%. And somehow, despite playing at a slower pace, the lakers in the 01 playoffs committed more personal fouls per game too.
    But really, the biggest fallacy is thinking you could compare what anyone in 01 was doing schematically on offense and defense with what the warriors were doing at their peak. The warriors motion offense was something that had never been executed at that level to that degree with that level of talent. And the warriors were a big part of popularizing switching on defense, especially in regards to paying attention to the percentages of different players.
    The warriors simply have way more talent, and that talent is running a more nuanced and complex system of basketball than basically anything that the Lakers had ever seen. And the teams that actually played well against Shaq and kobes lakers actually had many things in common with the 17 warriors. The 01 bucks had high level perimeter scoring in Ray Allen and Glen Robinson. The Sacramento kings ran a high pace offense with a big in chris Webber that could make high level reads as a passer, similar to Draymond. The pistons had movement shooters in Rip Hamilton and Chauncey Billups, along with a pick and pop forward in Rasheed Wallace. The warriors have Kevin Durant doing the pick and pop.

      Another thing nobody ever talks about is how a near 400 pound Shaq is supposed to keep up with the high speed basketball that is played today. Yes the Lakers will try to force gs to play their pace but what team ever did that to them in their prime? The fouls are a great point as well, Shaq would not be on the court for as much as LA would need him to be. Plus again, that revolutionary motion offense would be far too complex and disciplined for LA to stop. I don’t get why it’s so hard to believe that the greatest team of all time would simply be too well coached and too talented when not even a prime lebron james and kyrie Irving could take more than a game and got blown out regularly

    Both you and green keep mixing and matching players from different years. Bogut wasn’t on the 2017 warriors.
    Here’s how the 17 gsw vs 01 lakers would really go down.
    Curry, thompson, Durant would all be shooting about 42+% from 3 because they’ll eat on DHO’s, p&r’s, and pin downs because shaq could not and would not ever leave the basket defensively. That’s wide open 3’s all game for 3 of the 15 best shooters ever all in their peaks. They’d also be eating in transition offensively with curry and thompson spreading the lakers to the 3 point line with Durant, igoudala or Livingston handling and getting clear paths to the basket. They’ll always have the advantage because shaq was so lazy and slow to get back. If the lakers decided to switch instead of giving up open shots all game, Durant would just cook smaller guys like fisher in the mid range all game, and curry would cook bigger slower guys like grant and fox on the perimeter.
    Defensively, GS will just double shaq with ZAZA on him and KD, green or igoudala doubling down. That’s a big body and then another wing with extremely long arms. Other 3 GSW defenders zone up on the lakers shooters and can recover easily when shaq passes out. They’ll also have pachulia, McGee and west use up all 15 of their available fouls through out the game by hacking shaq where he’ll then shoot about 48% from the line.
    They’ll also have Durant, thompson and igoudala taking turns on Bryant. Kerr will instruct them all to say certain things to feed into his ego and have him ruin the lakers offense by forcing up BS shots and go into iso/1 on 1 shot jacking mode. Those 3 guys will stay fresh by taking turns on him and Bryant will shoot about 40% from the field, take a bunch of heavily contested long 2’s, and ruin LA’s chances by trying to play hero ball instead of getting the ball to shaq on the block.
    Lakers probably get 2 games. Warriors in 6.

    • @Jonathan-A.C.
      @Jonathan-A.C. 4 месяца назад +1

      That is a pretty biased assessment.
      I think a lot is sensible about how the Warriors play, but let’s not pretend anybody is guarding Shaq. And even if they are doubling and forcing a pass out, he’s a good passer. His team largely is not as universally skilled/talented as the Warriors, but this have guys who hit their shots.
      I think it’s fair to say that the Warriors have the advantage based on better offense

    • @tonj02
      @tonj02 4 месяца назад +21

      @@Jonathan-A.C. what did I say that was biased?
      I ever said anybody on their team could guard shaq. I said they’d use their 3 big bodies and 3 long wings to double him every time so that he’d have to pass out. If he didn’t pass out then he’d likely have to commit an offensive foul. I also said they’d have their guys use 15+ fouls in order to send shaq to the line rather than having him play 1 on 1, and shaq was obviously a terrible FT shooter. I never said he wasn’t a good passer, but the warriors other 3 defenders would easily zone up on the lakers 4 other players, especially with a non 3pt shooter like grant or guys who shot 32% and 31% from 3 in the playoffs like Bryant and fox. Once O’Neal passes out to the perimeter, golden state would easily rotate back and recover to stop a potential drive, or force fox or Bryant into a heavily contested 3. It would be different if fox and Bryant were 38% 3pt shooters and GS couldn’t afford to leave them open, or if GS didn’t have the defensive personnel to recover after a double team, but they did. I still think the lakers would get a game or 2, so I’m not disrespecting them.

      Well I think even then, it’s underrated Shaq’s pure physical dominance, although that’s not to say he didn’t throw the elbows pretty often. I also think it’s underrating his passing ability, because at good passer will have a solid chance to reach other teammates if they themselves. And even if it’s gonna be pressure on the perimeter, I’m sure they’d sub in the Lakers who can shoot better (which I still think would result in better Warriors offense, but it’s not from them being directly countered).

      Shaq is the only person on that team who can score efficiently enough to keep up with them. So focusing on keeping the ball out of his hands at the expense giving up some looks to less inefficient/lower volume scorers is a great plan.

      @@taxationistheft7 Kobe, Steph and KD have overlap y'know. And even in their rookie/sophomore/third seasons (09-11ish, when Kobe was still in championship form btw) they were putting up more efficient scoring seasons. KD in his second year was on par volume wise but MORE efficient in the same league at the same time as an end of prime Kobe... in his second year... And only got waaaay better by his warriors days.
      Kobe is an all time tough shot maker but every shot he takes is worth less than 1 point (that's what eFG% calculates, eg. 48%efg * 2 = 0.96points per shot), and every shot Steph, Klay & KD shoot gets you close to 1.14 - 1.2 points (efg% 57-60 when they played together). So by the end of a 100 possession game that's a blow out.
      The only person who can match that production at volume is Shaq, who at his absolute peak got you 1.15-1.25 points per shot. Every other person shooting the ball at volume is advantageous to the warriors. Shaq taps out at like 40ppg a game MAX so where are you getting the other 70-80 points at a better efficiency than the warriors?

      @@tj2nasty4ya83 Even without KD the Warriors were way too offensively stacked. Not to mention that if you take that 01 Lakers team out of their era you genuinely have to worry about the officiating due to shaq. If the refs are calling it like they do today then the Lakers have 0% chance of winning. Shaq would be in foul trouble and trying to guard Curry in space all night. If the refs are calling it like its 2000, the warriors still have the advantage by being able to be extra physical when screening for Curry or Draymond would be able to be extra physical when trying to get under Shaq's skin. The warriors are just a bad match up for the 01 Lakers.

    If you think you can go over steph screens in drop at 30 ft you crazy. He’s taking one big dribble to the line and pulling. He shoots that at 40%+ easily. That’s a 120 offensive rating. Then you have KD and Klay spotting up if you send help. No one has ever been able to slow Steph below 70% ts without switching or doubling.

  • @Nightmare-we8vm
    @Nightmare-we8vm 4 месяца назад +6

    I honestly think the Warriors should do what teams back then did with Shaq. You throw your biggest guy at him and slow his walk into the restricted area. You could also double on the catch and try to force Shaq to pass. While yes, they had quality shooters, the Warriors are living with Robert Horry and Rick Fox taking 10 3pt shots per game. Kobe will likely get his 25 to 30 also. On the other end, I worry about the Lakers' inability to switch on offball screens. Even modern teams with faster, longer defenders struggle with switching against the prime Warriors. Durant's production will likely match Kobe's and Curry will be taking wide open 3pt shots on the drop coverage, not mid range, because they can always set the screen higher. Shaq is gonna get exposed just like Rudy if they start forcing switches when Fisher can't get around the screens fast enough. The Warriors will win the series because the Lakers are the ideal of a dated strategy that has clear flaws relative to modern strategies. The talent of Kobe and Shaq will have to carry them, and I don't know if that's reliable given the trouble they will have defensively.

      The warriors if we're being honest would probably be the best defense they've faced when you consider how good the warriors defense is with how difficult it is to guard offenses today because of the spacing and talent level.
      Iggy would be at the top of best defender guarding kobe, and dray would be near the top of best help defender, and he also has switch ability.
      And that's their defense. Steph shoots comfortably from 40 and Durant and klay from 30. That is so gross

      Exactly my point. People are nostalgic and don't realize Shaq built his own mythology by being the most present in the media. Orlando's Shaq didn't magically became dominant Lakers Shaq: he was powerful but slower, he just had better back-up, and how many teams knew how to keep Shaq in line? Half of them, and I'm not speaking of hack a shaq. Better centers, good PFs could. And for teams who couldn't, many could stop the pass before Shaq got the ball. This whole debate is moot because of two points:
      1- former player NBA analysts built a narrative around their playing importance
      2- you can't do like coaching wouldn't count and make a 1 on 1 list.

They literally don’t stop moving. Then they got a scoring machine in KD who has never been seen before. And we’re forgetting about Demarcus Cousins being on their team at one point, along with Draymond. Honestly the team is just to good. Then we’re forgetting the crowd factor of the playoff atmosphere. The warriors go on incredible runs and make shots that just rip your heart out. Good defense and all and he still makes it. We saw them actually sweep them in 1998 where Van Exel and Eddie Jones were Allstars and Horry was already on the team, already Big shot Bob with Finals experience next to Hakeem in Houston. Yes they got significantly better-but you’re not stopping the Warriors. The only team that even had a remote shot in their run did it by hitting 1000 threes.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the Lakers threepeat core of players pretty much the same? Fisher, Kobe, Horry, Fox, and Shaq? The 2015 squad had Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut, the 17 to 19 teams had KD, David West, a bunch of other guys too. I’m assuming Dray is picking one team, probably the 17 Warriors but he’s picking and choosing which players from the whole five year window of 15-19.

    Kobe actually broke down in an interview before he died about how his Shaq/Kobe Lakers would beat the 17 Warriors. It’s pretty good honestly, how he would slow down the game and limit the Warriors offensive possessions, then no one on that GSW team could guard Prime Shaq in the paint.

    I remember that 01 run vividly. Simply because I hated the lakers and wanted them to lose so bad.
    It’s was BFish, BShaw, Horry and RFox that were all knock down. If you collapsed the paint on Kobe, he kicked it out- boom, 3. You double or triple Shaq and he kicked it out, boom 3. Grant was money from the mid range. Them dudes weren’t missing and they ran through quality competition in 01 in route to the finals and it was just flat out crazy.
    They had a winning streak if I’m not mistaken that started like 2 or 3 weeks before the playoffs even began. Which was just flat out nuts.

    no one's stopping klay no matter who you have on him, putting the best or second best defender on klay will lose them the game because klay doesn't need to dribble to get his shot off so all he needs is a screen and a little space to get his shot off and hes good. they cant leave steph one on one and will have to chase him and klay around screens which will more than likely tire them out. they had one of if the not best mid range shooters in shaun livingston. they still had iggy who could defend, klay was a pretty good defender at that time, and i almost forgot they have kd. no ones stopping steph klay or kd. they're gonna need to double someone and if they choose kd or curry well klay is just gonna have a field day and knock down shots all night. dont get me wrong warriors dont have anyone that can stop shaq or kobe but they can do things that can make shaq innefective like obviously hack a shaq, forcing him to get out side of the paint with switching. warriors were not a small team either they had alot of big bodies on their team, besdies curry they had about 13 players who were like 6'6 or taller. two mid range demons in livingston and kd, then steph, klay, kd lighting up from downtown

    Did Shaq just suggest playing a drop against the greatest shooter ever? Even if it’s not 3s Steph curry might be able to keep up with Shaq layups efficiency off of straight free throw line jumpers. Once the lakers realize that and send help that’s when you get people like klay and kd involved and they start making threes. Also I don’t think people understand that Shaq can’t play the whole game especially with the amount he would have to move to guard the warriors motion offense. And if he does play the whole game then by game 3 max he’s completely tired and now Kobe is spending time on the floor by himself and Kobe isn’t anywhere near enough to compete with that warriors team. Also I didn’t even mention the fact that the lakers don’t have enough great perimeter defenders to have a great defender on BOTH klay and kd. Klay didn’t have to show it, but klay is a legitimate scoring option that can go for 30 any given night when you put a weak defender on him. With all due respect I think that the lakers pull the first two, but from there the warriors sweep. Overall warriors in 6

    40% from 3 is 60% from 2s. Even if Kobe and shaq go insane and go above and beyond what they normally do curry (who played against teams that prepared and built to contend with the warriors perimeter threats) shot 42% from 3, Kevin Durant shot 44%, and Klay 39% from 3. Since you pointed out how shaq would do better against a team who didn’t have personnel to guard shaq, I think it is fair to say that the warriors would have a considerable and larger increase in their production compared to the lakers production. 44% from 3 is equivalent to 66% from the field which is considerably less sustainable. Also saying Robert Horry shot 36.2% from 3 in 2001 which is basically below average to today’s game. Basically warriors would not be able to stop shaq and Kobe, they would definitely get their buckets, but the warriors are just offensively better than them. If Shaq and Kobe do not produce 66% fg% every single game, warriors will simply outpace them.

    I think you put kd in front of shaq and bogut behind. You're not going to stop him, to just need to make the entry as difficult as possible. Try to encourage kobe to shoot 3s, otherwise he cooking klay too. Defensively is where you get the Lakers in trouble. Draymond runs the offense from the top, and make bogut set screens. This brings shaq up, or he's on KD getting cooked. Keep running them too, because when shaq goes out, the Lakers are vulnerable. Kobe can't guard them all.
