Ray Allen had the same clip, he just didn’t have the same other abilities (ball handle, passing, etc.) these are all things curry worked on tho. I don't agree with the physical trait thing like they say it. They say generational can't be mimicked, but if that was true they'd be flat out unique. Generational would mean you can only expect to see a guy with these physical traits AND technical abilities every 15-25 years. It's more than just your body. Steph has a spacial awareness that you can't teach, he has a depth perception that you just can't find anywhere else in his sport and he has insane motor control skills to execute movements with robotic accuracy. You can't just go out and be like Steph, if you could, he wouldn't be the only one.

But I can guarantee you that you’ll never be as good as the best pianist in the world. Some people are just born gifted with these abilities. Few players mimic Curry's three point ability because NBA players practice so much more things other than threes. Curry plays like if he practices threes and disregards other essential skills. Gils Arenas has a decent argument that Curry's advantage is skill related.
I think they got it wrong specifically on Kobe, while physically he was not a generational talent his drive and determination was a generational talent. Because MJ is a generational talent, you can't mimic Jordan. Millions of people saw MJ play the game, millions of kids tried to be "like mike", only 1 ever succeeded at the highest level of the sport, that was Kobe. Kobe's drive and determination allowed him to mimic and even improve on a generational talent when that should have been impossible. Nobody had a work ethic that could rival Kobe's. Steph I'm on the fence about because I see a lot of people in the league that are pretty dam close, Dame is the guy that immediately comes to mind, Trae Young can shoot from the logo, Kyrie has the same handles and shoots pretty good. I wouldn't say there is a player that has the whole package the way that Steph does but at the same time I don't feel like he has really separated himself from everybody else at least today. In his prime when he took that shot against OKC that was a separation for sure but it kind of feels like the rest of the league is catching up, nearly everybody in the league can shoot 3's now and the elite players can all shoot from the logo with accuracy. That being said a lot of these players that are chucking 3's are still young, we'll see if they can continue to be dependable three point shooters as time goes on. If I was going to call Steph a generational talent then much like Kobe I think his greatest talent is simply his drive and motivation to keep working on his game harder than anybody else does. If Steph continues to be insanely productive as he goes into his late 30's playing the game that will be a great indicator of that work ethic which is something you just can't teach.

In other words, working hard is not easy when one obstacle after another presents itself, but having the ability to persevere in spite of these can give you a significant advantage.
Generational Talent just means a player so skilled/talented, in whole or just part of their game, that they define their generation. Steph catalysed the 3-point era, he is definitively generational. For every example given of a player with unique natural gifts that capitalise on it, there’s as many- if not more- uniquely gifted players that never made it to the upper echelons to define a generation. Alternatively, people use GT to say their talent is once in a generation, as in it’s incredibly rare. If hard work’s the marker for Steph being great, why’s no one matching him? There’s tonnes of guys in the league that work as hard as Steph, if not harder, and there’s only one Steph. Again, definitively generational. It’s not just hard work. Just because you can’t physically see coordination and shooting ability like you can see someone’s height and build, doesn’t mean it’s not on some level innate and built on over time. I don't agree with the physical trait thing like they say it. They say generational can't be mimicked, but if that was true they'd be flat out unique.
Generational would mean you can only expect to see a guy with these physical traits AND technical abilities every 15-25 years.

My take on being a generational talent is like LOW was saying about these physical traits and how good you were because you could be an insane athlete but be a bum or an average player. The argument that Stephs shooting ability is just a skill and not also a talent makes no sense. Just like for piano, you can practice it all day for years. But I can guarantee you that you’ll never be as good as the best pianist in the world. Some people are just born gifted with these abilities. I think they got it wrong specifically on Kobe, while physically he was not a generational talent his drive and determination was a generational talent. Because MJ is a generational talent, you can't mimic Jordan. Millions of people saw MJ play the game, millions of kids tried to be "like mike", only 1 ever succeeded at the highest level of the sport, that was Kobe. Kobe's drive and determination allowed him to mimic and even improve on a generational talent when that should have been impossible. Nobody had a work ethic that could rival Kobe's.
Steph I'm on the fence about because I see a lot of people in the league that are pretty dam close, Dame is the guy that immediately comes to mind, Trae Young can shoot from the logo, Kyrie has the same handles and shoots pretty good. I wouldn't say there is a player that has the whole package the way that Steph does but at the same time I don't feel like he has really separated himself from everybody else at least today. In his prime when he took that shot against OKC that was a separation for sure but it kind of feels like the rest of the league is catching up, nearly everybody in the league can shoot 3's now and the elite players can all shoot from the logo with accuracy. That being said a lot of these players that are chucking 3's are still young, we'll see if they can continue to be dependable three point shooters as time goes on.
If I was going to call Steph a generational talent then much like Kobe I think his greatest talent is simply his drive and motivation to keep working on his game harder than anybody else does. If Steph continues to be insanely productive as he goes into his late 30's playing the game that will be a great indicator of that work ethic which is something you just can't teach.

And having the determination to work hard in the face of difficulty is a form of natural talent. In other words, working hard is not easy when one obstacle after another presents itself, but having the ability to persevere in spite of these can give you a significant advantage.
Generational Talent just means a player so skilled/talented, in whole or just part of their game, that they define their generation. Steph catalysed the 3-point era, he is definitively generational. For every example given of a player with unique natural gifts that capitalise on it, there’s as many- if not more- uniquely gifted players that never made it to the upper echelons to define a generation.
Alternatively, people use GT to say their talent is once in a generation, as in it’s incredibly rare. If hard work’s the marker for Steph being great, why’s no one matching him? There’s tonnes of guys in the league that work as hard as Steph, if not harder, and there’s only one Steph. Again, definitively generational. It’s not just hard work. Just because you can’t physically see coordination and shooting ability like you can see someone’s height and build, doesn’t mean it’s not on some level innate and built on over time.

I think what Gil is saying is about those guys is that they are freaks of nature from a physical standpoint but he can’t say the other guys aren’t generational talents because they are not freaks of nature. Because lets take mugsy for example he was 5’6 playing against dude twice his size and giving them hell. he definitely changed a generation but it wasn’t because he was a freakishly physical specimen, he was a hard worker. Now with dudes like Steph completely altering the game with his shooting, it’s wild to say he’s not generational. I have seen these kids coming up saying Steph is the best player to ever play…not saying I agreed but that just shows you this new generation sees him as a generational talent and I honestly can’t say they are wrong.
