    I know this rav4 is more compact than subcompact, but I just got a compass upland and I am very happy with it's off-road performance given the size and price. They actually give it decent clearance, and more important for me where I live in cross-ditch central, good approach, skid plates, and decent departure+breakover as well. Those are what I run into before power and traction limits, typically, and it's the only vehicle in the class to give two hoots about angles.

    I'm not surprised . . . the Tacoma and the Pathfinder are great platforms and small enoguh to work around rocks and trees . . . the RAV4 is a soccer-mom car that, mechanically, can't compete. If you want a pretty, soft-roader CUV TRD, then maybe the RAV4 TRD is for you.

    Few years back you took a Hybrid Rav4 up some pretty steep hills and it killed it! So, unless that has changed, I say stick to the advice of buying a Hybrid Rav4 to get that low end torque since they don't have a proper 4L. Bottom line tho, is the TRD Rav4 is just an appearance package. It does not have the DNA like its bigger relatives.

    Great review. Very consistent with DrivingSportsTV review. I hope Toyota turns this feedback positive and makes the next version with better gearing, and more wheel cavity for larger tires. Honda did it right with their gearing choice. I bet a Honda Passport will rip through all the same courses this thing hit. A unibody can fair very well with the right gearing and (virtual) locking differentials -- just look at the Defender and Passport. Hope they offer rock sliders, like the Tundra TRD Pro, or at least, mounting points that can handle aftermarket rock sliders.
    Also this wheelbase isn't so long, only about 106", about the same as the FJ Cruiser. 4Runner is about 109.8". 4-door Wrangler is about 118"

I can crawl up any hill here in San Francisco if only in 1st gear (and the hills here are pretty steep sometimes). I wonder if it's just an issue of rev limiting at low speed combined with poor front traction on steep slopes, especially those loose dirt or low-traction logs. Not sure why they tuned the car that way. You'd think they'd let you give it some real beans when you're trying to get unstuck.

      Subaru advertises their AWD capability as the main selling point. Toyota advertises the RAV4 as a cool car to go on road trips and hang out with your friends. And honestly before the CVT Subaru was honest in their claims but not anymore.

      No doubt about it, Subaru is a joke off road, but I find this a fair comparison. TFL made no efforts to disguise the Rav's LACK of ability. There's no concerted effort to bash Subaru. Subaru sucks enough on its own accord.

    AWD especially doesn't work without traction control. Only full-time 4WD works without traction control. Yes, I know permanent(F.T) 4WD seems very similar to AWD but it isn't mechanically speaking, and it shows in performance.
    Full time 4WD is not engineered for high speed cornering on road. And AWD is not engineered for off road.
    Always pay attention to the drive train badge ppl ! The off road trim Rav 4 did pretty good.

    What are the chances you can test the Explorer Timberline and Acadia AT4 on this course? Both are big sellers in their segment and I'm sure people would like to see their capabilities.

    • @haroldbeauchamp3770
      @haroldbeauchamp3770 Год назад

      The Timberline uses a lame clutch pack instead of a traditional transfer case to transfer power to the front wheels, so the system still is vulnerable to overheating. Which other youtube channels have proven. It would have been so easy for Ford to install a traditional transfer case and proper low range in the Explorer, but they chose the cheap route using a clutch pack. GM is extremely finicky about publishing the capabilities of their awd sytems. GM does not currently have an Acadia AT4 in their media fleet as far as I have been told. They have no interest in marketing their awd based systems as even remotely capable of off road, despite the badging.
