Yeah man the red alert series is the best with how it's just a fictional story about a conflict between countries considered to be traditional enemies which is just to give an element of story to support the gameplay which is the core of the game the reason people played it so much and still long to play it today.
This game is stupid, wacky, doesn't make sense and is overall a fever dream. I LOVE IT. This game will live in my heart forever and when I'm old, I'll be recalling the GLA soundtrack and not remembering where it's from.
the two things that keep coming back to me are the GLA slaves line "i need shoes" which is darkly hilarious, and the voice line you get when you research Arm the mob. "AKs for everyone! yaaaaaay!"
I wonder if there is a version where the voice over is changed to their respective factions - Mandarin/Cantonese for China, but for GLA it would probably have to include multiple languages - Arabic, Persian/Dari, Pashto, Urdu, Punjabi, Turkish - the GLA music itself has multiple influences.
When vanilla came out one of my friends, who saw us playing it at a LAN party remarked: "When you have those GLA workers, aren't they much slower than Chinese trucks?" To make fun of him we said: "Yeah, they are much slower than US helicopters or the Chinese trucks but you can research the "Shoe" upgrade to make them run and gather faster." He believed it at we all found it was hilarious because we were 15 year old shitheads who were also aware of how inappropriate that was even back then. Then Zero Hour came out and they actually introduced the "Shoe" upgrade ...
The entire game was great satire, much like the C&C series itself, even though this one wasn't made by Westwood Studios. Even the USA team was very over-the-top, but yet commentary on the then War on Terror and War on Iraq. You had tanks called Crusaders and Paladins, with lines like, "Doing what's right!" it's brilliant, haha.
I think the part about Crusaders was actually real, there was a real armored vehicle called crusader in development around the time Generals were released. Two differences: 1) it was a self-propelled howitzer, not a tank, 2) it was scrapped due to budget cuts somewhere in 2005. In a sense, Generals are a monument to closed weapon projects: stealth helicopter Comanche makes appearance, Crusaders being actually deployed, and many more stuff that never made it past the prototype stage.
@@quint3ssent1a Most of the units the US deployed in Generals was either tech already in use, cutting edge tech that had just hit the scene, prototypes that were later scrapped for budget and common sense reasons (F-117 was discontinued because the F-22 was faster, more maneuverable, packed the same armaments and had only a marginally bigger radar footprint than the F-117 and was cheaper to produce at 22million per plane compared to 35million per plane.) The rest are technology that wasn't developed but was theoretically possible with the tech at the time. Zero Hour was rushed an included even more of these, such as Railgun Artillery, Laser rifles for Rangers and Burton, Laser main guns for Comanches and Paladins. Airforce and Superweapon were intended to have their own (weaker) tanks, but due tot he rush they were never completed, though the assets (audio files, screenshots of development, unused models and icons) were still in the game files. All of the content ZH didn't include was restored in the mod Shockwave, which aimed to be what ZH should have been, and it's glorious.
C&C has amazing soundtracks in general. My partner and I watched Bill and Ted recently and I thought it was so cool when I heard lines that were sampled.
They did remove one GLA mission from the main game, though, where you had to exterminate civilians with toxin tractors. But it was made available for download later on.
Oh, yeah, I remember that mission... of course, campaign is still great without it. Also, am surprised that you're here too, being an LPhoenix viewer and X-Wing game series fan.
@@michaelandreipalon359 Heh, yeah, I have the ability to appear where people least expect me ;) I've always been a first-person shooter fan, first and foremost, but during the 00's I started to open up towards other stuff, which included strategy games and the X-Wing/TIE Fighter sims. Games were still censored then, but only in some countries. Iirc China bans anything that could even be remotely interpreted as against them, Germany bans or heavily censors anything violent, there's quite a bit of things.
This is not the best example imo. C&C Generals is actually very brilliant because US army is just as stereotyped and caricatured. And the game is made by americans. Back in 2003, I was a US Marine walking through the bazaar in Baghad and I stopped by at a booth to watch some Iraqi's playing this game. I really wanted to step in and show them how to play it properly. I also played it back in the barracks with a few other marines, and I was so good that I could do 3v1 and still dominate everyone. Ah... the memories. I once had a LAN match against the IT guys in Quake3, where it was a team deathmatch -- first to 100 kills wins. It was 6 v 1, with me being the solo player. I ended up winning, 100 to -6. They didn't kill me a single time, but they did accidentally shoot each other.
@@ConradKo Oh, I thought you were asking about C&C Generals : Zero Hour. haha. With Quake3, I primarily used the rocket launch, plasma gun, shot gun, and rail gun. I switched from WASD movement controls to ESDF so that I could keybind my weapons to adjacent key presses, so I could instantly switch to a different weapon by moving a finger to an adjacent key. I think rocket launcher was "R", shotgun was "W", rail gun was "G", plasma was "T", etc. The gun I would use would depend on the situation, usually I initiate with a rocket by shooting a nearby wall or floor, bounce them, get close and use shotgun, and finish them off with plasma rifle. If they are far away, I just rail gun them. I tried to get max armor, max health and quad damage as often as possible so I can one shot a bunch of people. If I saw someone running towards a weapon/health item, I would just shoot rockets at the weapon/item location and they would get blasted away. I won something like 100 to -6, with a flawless victory (zero deaths). They team killed each other on accident a few times and got negative points.
Because China only allows its citizens to utilize entertainment made by them. They get salty when they think games "smear the image of China and the Chinese army" when the Chinese army in this game was actually very nicely represented as respectful individuals.

That intro alone got it banned in Germany. I think it's hilarious that the German censors didn't even need to get to starting a game before banning it.
@@zyxophoj To this day I believe that censoring this game was a political move in the wake of the Iraq war: Germany opposed the US invasion of Iraq, which had been justified by alleged weapons of mass destruction being developed and horded by Saddam Hussein. . . . . Tiberian sun was easy to change by just modifying the .in as a text document though. No more useless light infantry when you draw their damage up and keep their AP low

Red Alert 3 not as much in terms of commenting on politics, I mean the Red alert universe was already batshit insane, and now there's an anime robot faction bent on world dominance lol. Closest thing would be the hilarious stereotyping of each faction which has some unique charm
I remember reading a newspaper article about this game when it came out. I'm still surprised it even happened looking back at it. I mean 2003...that was like the height of the War in Iraq/Afghanistan.
The Americans attacked Iraq in May 2003. This game was long in development before then and they had no idea that Operation OIL was going to happen. I remember the Americans spending months telling the Iraqis to dismantle their best weapon systems or they will invade... the Iraqis complied and the Americans invaded anyway lol
I remember how much I hated this mission. Mainly because the nuke cannons would not stay entrenched. I would tell them to stay where they are and new whoever comes in sight and yet they would constantly dismantle themselves and then waste precious time re entrenching themselves before firing again.
Yeah, and when I would order them to attack a unit, they would move like 2 meters, be entrenched and miss in the end And the enemy would destroy the targeted building or reactor
It may be politically incorrect but it was loads of fun. You haven't lived until you transform your bomb trucks into aircraft carriers and "sail" them into an enemy base before nuking the whole thing just to be sure xD
The voicelines for the workers are absolute gems. When you clear mines, chinese are like "Mines are dangerous!" And "I will get rid of those mines!, the americans say "why do I always get the dirty jobs?", but the workers have bangers, like: "there are mines out there?" And "OK, here I go..."
Interesting fact: It was the last game rated "for 16 " here in Germany that needed to be censored (Suicide bombers became RC cars, all soldiers were turned to Cyborgs). But there was a 4 week period in which the uncensored version was sold - and I got one back then ^^
Ha, me too. After that, EA apparently did some hard lobbying to change the regulations. Nowadays, the Bureau of Censorship has a seat on the table where age regulations are decided so that something like this will not happen again :)

When vanilla came out one of my friends, who saw us playing it at a LAN party remarked: "When you have those GLA workers, aren't they much slower than Chinese trucks?" To make fun of him we said: "Yeah, they are much slower than US helicopters or the Chinese trucks but you can research the "Shoe" upgrade to make them run and gather faster." The entire game was great satire, much like the C&C series itself, even though this one wasn't made by Westwood Studios.
@@quint3ssent1a lots of laser PD and aiming for American forces too
@@quint3ssent1a I also remember there being a YF-12, but I think that MIGHT'VE been a mod.
Actually, it was made by a sizable number of former Westwood devs. Same for Tiberium Wars+Kane's Wrath, as far as I've heard.
@@quint3ssent1a Most of the units the US deployed in Generals was either tech already in use, cutting edge tech that had just hit the scene, prototypes that were later scrapped for budget and common sense reasons (F-117 was discontinued because the F-22 was faster, more maneuverable, packed the same armaments and had only a marginally bigger radar footprint than the F-117 and was cheaper to produce at 22million per plane compared to 35million per plane.)
The rest are technology that wasn't developed but was theoretically possible with the tech at the time.
The OST of this game shouldn't slap as hard as it does
C&C has amazing soundtracks in general. My partner and I watched Bill and Ted recently and I thought it was so cool when I heard lines that were sampled.
And to think there are some bootleg copies of this game that don't have the soundtrack...

They did remove one GLA mission from the main game, though, where you had to exterminate civilians with toxin tractors. But it was made available for download later on.
