    I remember a storm night when i was trying to take thunder photos. I don't like acoustic noises so i switched the volume off in my, not more, g80. From that moment i couldn't shoot slower than 1". Just now i understand why! In silence mode the camera operates using electronic shutter which is "time lower bounded"! Thank's master!

    Thank you, you've given a very clear explanation of the differences. As for myself, I've never found any problems using the electronic shutter and so I use it every time unless I have to use flash. MFT cameras appear to be much less prone to the rolling shutter and banding effects.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 года назад

      Thanks! Smaller sensor helps a bit with rolling shutter, but you'll still get the same effects also on the MFT camera in the right circumstances. I deliberately used suitable shutter speed to enhance the effects.

    I use the electronic shutter for time lapse as it means less stress & wear on the mechanical shutter. Back in the day when I used to own a Canon 5D MK IV I used to do time lapse and the shutter got jammed on one occasion after reviewing the shots I saw very strange angled strips across some random shots and every now and then a shot would strangely come out not properly exposed. The Canon repair shop replaced the shutter box assembly (they really fussed over warranty claim as they insisted that the camera was not designed for frequent time lapse type shooting - of course they didn't have a leg to stand on). I did the right thing and sold the camera soon after repair. For a while I used a secondhand GH4 and did a huge amount of time lapses with it without a single issue .

    Thank you for this explanation. I had continued to use the electronic shutter because in touring many cathedrals & museums I needed to keep the camera silent but forgot to place it back in mechanical mode. I did get occasional blurred photos with electronic shutter mode with fast movement and I assume the mechanical shutter will fix that. I think I remember a way to make the G9 mechanical shutter to be silent but I may be confused about that, no I am confused about that. Great tips and explanation of the possible new electronic sensor based shutters of the future.

    • @mattisulanto

    The down side to using the ' Auto ' setting is ? Example - shooting humming birds that are perched ( not moving ) & then it takes off flying. In such a case wouldn't ' Auto ' be the better choice ?

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  3 года назад +1

      The only downside to Auto shutter is that you can't be sure which shutter the camera will use. I'm not sure what the hummingbirds think of this😀, but I guess you are going to need pretty fast shutter speed, if you want to freeze the bird in flight.

    Thank you so much Sulanto for a very well explained instructions. I don’t know why some can give a thumbs dn for such excellent video. I hv 3 questions:
    1) I saw there is still a curtain moving for EFC and you mentioned there is no vibration.
    In theory will there be still a vibration but is so minute that prob would not be noticeable? Does EFC register shutter count?
    2) Both EFC and Electronic has certain limitation for shutter speed. And the latter will cause banding and rolling shutter as well under certain speed and light condition. Assuming speed is within range and under ideal light conditions, is EFC or Electronic better to bring out the sharpest and most dynamic range and with the least noise.
    3) Do you have any ideal what is the bit value for each type of shutter for G95? I read a comment in a forum that electronic shutter normally has lesser bit but he can’t confirm. I can’t find such info despite I google extensively.
    TQ so much.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 года назад

      Thanks! 1. Only the second curtain moves to close the exposure, so any vibration would occur after the exposure. 2. I don't think the shutter type has anything to do with the sharpness or dynamic range, if possible shutter shock is excluded. Some tests indicate, that there is more noise with the electronic shutter, with all cameras, but I have not investigated that. 3. As far as I know the picture file is always the same regardless of the shutter type.

    At 5:21 you mentioned that the max shutter on Panasonic cameras is 1/2000 s for first curtain electronic shutter. On the 2013 Sony A7 the shutter speed is exactly the same as with mechanical shutter 1/8000. I don't understand the reason of this limitation in Lumix cameras, theoretically EFCS simply resets the sensor stripe/slit exactly as with a mechanical shutter.

    • @mattisulanto

    Any trick on how to turn off silent mode on a g9? It says it's in silent mode and will not allow me to change shutter type.

      I figured it out.... The little dial on the front of the camera lol. That's what that little dial does.

      IIRC you can program the switch/dial for different functions, but that is the default.

    Just a question.. Why on lumix using any kind of electronic shutter reduce raw bit depth?
    Like on my G80 but as I can see also on G9 and others, to 10 bit actually iirc (on g80)

      If you shoot video, you don't have to worry about shutters, because for video the camera will only use electronic shutter.

    Thank you, I love your channel. I own the G9 and I am very happy with it. My question on preview settings relates to my confusion regarding whivh Shutter mode I'm in. As I understand things, when I'm in electronic shutter mode, I constantly see my image lighting, etc . so that the preview issue is only when in the mechanical shutter mode. Then, I can constantly see the actual image only if I'm in the M mode. To see a preview while in mechanical shutter and set to either A,S,P mode, i would use your suggested method. Is this correct?
    Thank you and continue your great work.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 года назад

      I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but if you turn on the Constant preview, you'll see the real time exposure in the camera.

      Hi Matti.
      I would like to confirm that while in the Mechanical Shutter mode, I can only see in the viewfinder the actual exposure (and changes I make to aperture and shutter speeds) while in the Manual Exposure mode. If I want to see how the picture will look while in either P, A, or S.mode (still using Mechanical Shutter), I can use your work around as you describe in your video on exposure preview. Is this correct or am In doing something wrong?
      Thank you very much.
      Keep up the great work!

      I'm sorry for the confusion. I do have the constant preview option set and I'm in the mechanical shutter mode. I meant that I need to press the exposure preview button (default Fn5) or press the shutter release half way in order to see the actual exposure while in the Electronic shutter mode, you always see the actual exposure without pressing any buttons. I was connecting between this video and your one on Exposure Preview from a year ago. It was a bit confusing at first but definitely got it now. Thanks to you.

    Interesting I hadn't realised they were developing a new shutter. That will mean certain death for DSLR when they do.

    • @mattisulanto

      It's a new sensor actually, not a new shutter, and it makes mechanical shutter redundant.

    • @mattisulanto

      It’s possible, but if the over exposure is consistent I think may not be a faulty shutter.

      Because I have not seen your camera and how you use it, I can’t be 100% sure it’s the shutter. It can be a faulty shutter of course.

    If my camera can take 6 photos per second and record videos at 60fps.
    And 60 fps is the same than 60 photos per second. Why does the photo mode only let you take 6 per second? What is the difference between fps in video and taking pictures per second?

    Electronic shutter makes some strange deformations on pictures in motion. I don't like that, even if I can get 40 fps on my Lumix LX-100.
