This came out quite long, so I put time stamps in the description. There is also a small mistake in the video. I say that you can choose any photo style to use simultaneously with the filters, but you can actually only use STD. Or the camera defaults to STD, if you turn on the simultaneous capture. I don't know how that happened, because I tried it, but obviously I was sloppy and missed something. I'm really sorry about that.
If you turn bracketing (or any other funtion for this matter) often on and off, it is also a good idea to put this function on a function key. Besides the normal function keys Lumix cameras also have "soft" function keys, which are accessable via the touch screen.
Thanks for the video! Very handy as I continue to explore my new camera. I just broke my right arm this month... and part of my income depends on taking photos. Losing use of my dominant arm has been tough, but I found that it was useful to set my camera to a 2s timer, and then I activated the Touch to Shoot function for the LCD. To shoot, I hold the camera up and touch my desired focus point with my nose, then continue using my left hand to hold the camera and compose my framing. The Dual IS has also been a godsend in this scenario. I never used the touchscreen for shutter release before with my last camera, but it’s good to learn all the camera settings just in case they become useful some day.
I'm glad to have found you, Great instruction on Panasonic features. Pin point feature is something I use to use but forgot about it, thank you for the reminder... now taking shots will be easier for macro.
Just got a used gx9. This means I will be revisiting your channel many times looking for your great tips on the use of Lumix camera’s. Compared to Olympus the Lumix menu’s are a walk in the park. At least that is my first impression.
I use the pinpoint AF all the time for slow/stationary subjects. My new favourite feature is hitting the focus joystick while in animal AF which locks onto the animal and tracks it :)
This is so useful, thanks. I have a little GM-5, for which the manual - were it to be printed - would be bigger than the camera. This is a good introduction to what is possible.
More great content Matti and very timely for me as I’ve shot Olympus bodies since full four thirds with a lot of Panasonic lenses and have my first Panasonic body (gx85) coming in a week. p.s. I stumbled upon your channel a couple of months ago and your intro flicking that rear lens cap is awesome and brightens my day every time!
Dear Matti, Thank you for all tips , tricks and explanations...I have one remark on the pictures taken in JPEG. You explained to us if you use JPEG you can add a filter, to get a color file and a black and white file. Ok that is fine and a good way to get those different files. I discovered also an other way...Take your pictures in the settings RAW-JPEG... You can shoot in every black white or filtersetting you want.(that is with AI always a JPEG file( for instance BW). But the RAW file is always in basic color setting and stays like a master...So you don't have to change in your custom menus.
It's good to have a "guide" like you through these menus -- I often get frustrated going up/down many pages in the wrong set of menus looking for one specific setting.... Thanks!
A great video. Due to time constrains I've not touched my GH5 for about 6 months. One really forgets the settings at that time! I like the customization options for GH5, one can really tweak it the way you like it and what suits your shooting style and workflow.
Great video. Some were new, some I forgot about. One thing I have to say about Lumix and especially the G9 is there is so much it can do that it is often an underrated camera system. When hit with a situation for photography or video, I first go to the G9 to see what it can do. For 2020 it was my go to for many situations (all volunteer work) and Panasonic Lumix G9 came to the rescue. I did find my first lens Lumix G 14-140mm II, has been the most used lens and a favorite of my friends. Some times you can do more than you realize, I know I did, with a budget lens.
Hi Matti thanks for the video , but I would have to point out that not all Lumix cameras have a my menu , and some you can not rename the folder ( G80 ) two options that would have been nice to have .
Hi, I have been a Olympus em1 mkII shooter for some time now. Recently I purchased a G9. Why, because the price was too good to miss. I must say with the G9 and the Leica 100mm-400mm Lens I have found this camera my main bird photography camera. Sadly I must say I am converted Well not sad - Happily I am converted. What a great camera. Its usability is so much better than the olympus. Yes the olympus is a good camera, but I have to admit I am converted. cheers from Australia
@sulantoblog Thanks for these tips - I'm inspired to spend time reading the manual and going over the menu options. Suggestion for a future video - how to effectively use tracking AF on Lumix cameras. I often get confused by the relationship between Tracking, AF-C, high shutter speed, etc.
I second this idea! While I know about high shutter speed (shutter is open for a shorter time so fast moving subjects don’t have time to move and blur) and AF-C (continuous focus: the camera is always adjusting focus even without a half press of the shutter, good for video or instant shutter release in sports), my tech experience is old school so I don’t remember how to enable tracking (the point the camera tries to focus on will track a certain spot on a subject as it moves around in the frame).
Hi Thanks for the videos they are inspiring .. i am having problems with noise when shooting sun rise and sunset - only in these timings with my G9 , and advise you can give me on setting or are you going to make separate video on settings during sun rise and sunset subject
A very good reminder to go through camera menus once in a while to re-discover or discover features hidden in the myriad of menus. Q-menu customisation is a good tip especially when the fixed setup of Q-menu repeats many of the functions already available behind dedicated or Fn-buttons (ISO, WB, etc.). The mysteries of AF part of Lumix G's one can never talk too much either. So many useful features, which are just waiting to be discovered (and then forgotten again :-) ). Panasonic really does not make using their cameras too easy by publishing user manuals with the quality way below their cameras year after year. I wish they would finally hire someone capable of writing useful and ergonomic manuals. I recently discovered that in Germany they have actually done that - sort of. German photo journalist Frank Späth seem to have published decent, dedicated user manuals for all G-series cameras. Bought one for my camera and was quite impressed as it appears to be the manual that should have been supplied with the camera at the first place. The only problem is that the book is in German and explains the menus in German. Got to wonder why there is no English or any other language translations though especially when the book is endorsed by Panasonic (Germany).
I have to correct you about the filter options. If you set the camera to record both jpeg and raw simultaneously, you will get jpegs with filter and regular raw pictures. I do it both with my G9 and my GX80. When you look at the file in the library in LR you'll see it with filter, but as soon as you open the file in the development module the filter won't show in LR.
Yes, that's how it goes. Did I say something else? Lightroom shows the jpeg preview at first, but it doesn't know how to interpret the art filter settings and resets the image in the develop module.
sulantoblog Yes, you did, just watch your video again. It's not a big deal 😊 I always have my camera set to raw + jpeg in case I want to take a picture with filter to post on my Instagram story. I enjoy your videos so keep up the good work 👍 😊
Love your videos bro, keep them coming! We defintely need more lumix based videos on RUclips. One small suggestion, can you please change the transition sound effect to one more soothing on the ears. :). Your headphone using watchers would definitely benefit.
Thanks for all your G9 info. I’m a new user and, as you say, the capabilities of this camera are simply overwhelming! I can’t Image what the amount of stuff the new S5 users will have to wade thru! 😂
Hi! First of all, thank you for all the videos you produce that are always so full of info. I am a newbie to the MFT system and I just got me a GX85, I don't see a "My Menu" part when I press the "Menu" button. Any comment or advise?
Very good video, very useful. Some of these features I remember testing but others I didn't, so in the end I learned many new things. Thank you very much for sharing these tips! Cheers
I guess this shows how the options evolve over time. My old Lumix 1000 doesn't seem to have My Menu, filters to output B&W at the same time as color, custom file names, or exposure compensation reset. Otherwise, spot-on. Customizing the Q-menu and selecting a custom WB has indeed been useful.
What was the LUMIX 1000? I remember the G1 and L1, and it seems like there was a logical naming progression from there, but I missed a few things that happened in the middle (because I was happy with my camera for so long)
For a while? Try never... Splendid and useful video, helps lift the fog on what is actually possible with these computers able to make photographies... :) I use mine almost as I did shooting analog. AV on, toggle the aperture, toggle the ISO, have a look, possibly some comp and take it from there and I haven't even started looking at the video possibilities. Thanks for making and putting this one up. :-)
Great info mr Sulanto, my question is: i always want to have a shortcut of the multiple exposure function, on gx80 and G9 i can just not find it in the customisable menus and keys, please any suggestions?!
I'm sorry to hear that. However, I can't do much, because I don't have a GX7 to play with. My advice is to reset the camera to factory default, take a look at the manual and see what happens.
I'm really happy I found your channel (by accident actually). I customized my menues now and it's like a better camera. What's it with the loo mix and bluemix subtitle names, though? LOL

I'm no longer a brand ambassador and at the moment have no access to Lumix cameras to double check what might be the problem. You obviously have one setting on that excludes the other one, but I don't remember all the settings and how they work. Unfortunately I can't help you, I'm so sorry.
Thanks for digging through the Lumix menus. There are a lot of features that ' only ' function on my Fz2500 camera if it's set to shoot JPEG - ex : the tip you reveal on the color & B/W taken conjointly. I like having the security of the normal shot & then any ' one ' of the Art Filter selection taken at the same time. Can you think of a down side to leaving this feature ' on ' all the time ? Again, thanks for doing this one.
@@mattisulanto I went into the: Menu > Fn Button Set & looked for ' Filter Settings ' as a selection - nada. Trying to find a quicker way to turn this feature on & off. Hope to be getting the G9 soon which will be used mostly in ' RAW ' shooting. I see myself taking out both my familiar Fz 2500 24 ~ 480mm bridge camera as well as the G9 when attending our ' Camera Totin Day's ' photography group as they go on their outings.
Bing Bong thanks but have not used auto mode in 20 years. I’m sure it’s some setting conflicts with it and will have to turn each one off one at a time when I get home from work.
@@WhoIsSerafin Haha, forgive me, but some people live in auto mode :) OK good luck. at least you know it definitely works on my g9 so you will eventually get yours to work I'm sure. Also I'll assume that your software version is up to date, but i don't know if that matters in this situation.
Ok so I tried to set black and white and color shooting at same time on my G9 and Gx85 and neither will allow me to do it saying the menu item can't be set. Anyone else have success with this?
sulantoblog so I didn’t think it was a reset issue but I did it on my GX85 because it would take less time to restore all my settings. When I did I could then set the color and black and white. But! Once I restored all my settings it was turned off again and unable to turn back on. So something in the settings I like to use on both cameras doesn’t make it compatible. Driving me nuts!
I figured it out, spent the entire night driving myself mad! I figured it out pretty quick on the GX85 but no matter how many times I rebooted the camera for the g9 nothing! Then I remembered I had just gotten this camera back under warranty brand new from Panasonic and it was still using the old firmareware. Put in new firmareware and no problems! Found new firmware for the GX85 also so sanity restored.
Hi Matti, Great video as always but can you help please? I'm trying to use one of the features you highlighted in your video, which I want to use with every shot. I have an LX100II and I tried the "Simultaneous Record w/o Filter". When I set my Photo Style to something other than Standard and use the "Simultaneous Record w/o Filter" feature with a filter set on, the Photo Style defaults to back to Standard. Is this the same on yours or is it a bug on mine? Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your comment. I looks like I made a mistake in the video and you are right. I don't know how that happened, because I tried it, but obviously I was sloppy and missed something.
Thanks for your reply. I can still shoot with it and do some light post editing to the Standard jpeg. It's still a great feature though, so thanks for making us aware of it. And you're far from sloppy!
I love the pin point focus. Wish Olympus would consider that feature. One thing I liked about my Pentax ME Super film camera was the split focus screen. I hated when I replaced it with DSLR camera because the focus screen is so flat and hard to manually focus. Fujifilm has an EVF simulated version of the split focus screen in their cameras but Panasonic really had a great idea and I love it.
I’m not sure what you are referring to... might just be me? If you mean picture in a picture when you’re manually focusing, yes Olympus cameras have that. My last Olympus camera doesn’t have the focus peaking (colors highlighting around areas in focus) option though, or at least I never found it.
I used to be a DSLR shooter 10 years ago. Then for a number of years I only used an iPhone as a camera, and now got the Panasonic S5. I absolutely hate the UI/UX, full of dials, sub menus of sub menus. Photo and video is mixed totally together, photos mode has settings, video mode has settings, general has settings, there are two settings in general, and settings has settings. WHO the f came up with this insane system? People says Panasonic is way better than Sony, then I don't want to know how terrible they are. As a result of the terrible UX/UI I'm never entirely sure the camera is set to the correct settings for what I'm about to do, which ruins the experience completely. Cameras is an area that REALLY needs re-invention, I mean has camera manufactures slept under a rock for 10 year? None of them owns a smartphone? Blows my mind how stupid this is.
@@mattisulanto Lol, sorry for airing my frustrations on your video comments thread, but I saw you explained about the custom menu’s and thought I’d maybe finally get how to use it, but i don’t. Why doesn’t any camera manufacturer put a big touch display, like 6” OLED and go ‘all’ GUI, with a few dials for shutter, aperture etc? Something that would be as easy to use as an iPhone, there’s a giant hole in the market for something like that I believe.
This came out quite long, so I put time stamps in the description.

If you are happy with jpeg, I can't think of any downsides.
Thank you for these tips ! Very useful ! 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Thank you for these fine ideas. I learned new things!
Thanks!
Very helpful, thank you :)
Thanks!
I cannot find the Folder / File Settings on my G80 menu (Italian). How happens? How can I change file name prefix? Please help. Thank you in advance
I'm traveling and don't have any Lumix cameras with me, so I can't double check that. I suggest you take a look at the user manual.
@@mattisulanto I did. No mention about that feature
@@morosoft66 Every feature and function may not be available. What exactly would you like to change?
@@mattisulanto the file names, as I wrote. But don't worry for now, MARRY CHRISTMAS!
@@morosoft66 Happy Christmas to you too.
On the last tip I see they used MID for medium instead of MED.....
They do that sometimes.
My raw is off but it won’t let me turn on simultaneous record w/o filter. Any idea why on my G9?
Try to reset the camera and try again. Without seeing the camera it's difficult to say what the problem is.
Hi, what mode are you in? On my G9 it won't work on iA mode. It works on S/A/P/M modes. Hope that helps.
Try resetting the camera first and then try again.
sulantoblog so I didn’t think it was a reset issue but I did it on my GX85 because it would take less time to restore all my settings. When I did I could then set the color and black and white. But! Once I restored all my settings it was turned off again and unable to turn back on. So something in the settings I like to use on both cameras doesn’t make it compatible. Driving me nuts!
@@WhoIsSerafin I know the feeling, but I can't think of what it is. If you have selected RAW, then it doesn't work, that is for sure.
@@WhoIsSerafin Great!
Hi Matti,
Great video as always but can you help please?
Thanks!
I’m not sure what you are referring to... might just be me?
If you mean picture in a picture when you’re manually focusing, yes Olympus cameras have that. My last Olympus camera doesn’t have the focus peaking (colors highlighting around areas in focus) option though, or at least I never found it.
🙏
uhm, i used all of em
doing self taught and spent hours playing with my camera
I hope it was time well spent.
Thanks for sharing.
@@TheKimNeeper You need to buy a Leica, they have by far the simplest menu and UI in general.
RÉAL PHOTOGRAPHERS DON’T NEED A DIGITAL CAMERA !
Yeah I just stare at the scene and memorize the pixel values
It's not your screen, it's his microphone.
