Yeah, it's so much better! I love that you can still see your histogram while changing ISO instead of having the ISO scale completely take over the on-screen display!
You're very welcome. I'm glad it was helpful! I hope you have fun learning the camera. I love how the G9 feels to hold and use and also the fact it works so well for both video and photography. You've made a good decision!
I've just bought the G9 and the Sigma 16mm 1.4. I'm looking into wedding photography/videos in case I get the boot after furlough ends. I'm really getting a lot from your videos in every direction. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Tom. Really pleased you're finding them helpful. You've chosen a fantastic camera to work with as it's such a beast for both photography and videos!
I love seeing how others setup their G9 :). A few of the settings you chose had me scratching my head, though. For example, why did you set your video to 8 bit and not 10 bit? If you're going to do color grading in post (applying a LUT and tweaks), but you're worried about the dynamic range, why not get the V-log L upgrade? While not really a "setting", when you're shooting, do you always stick to the magic 180 degree rule and control exposure either with aperture or ND filters? Why did you setup the sound level display? Do you have a mic on the camera, and if so, what do you use?
Thanks DeusTechMachine. I mainly use 8-bit because the picture profile only needs a light grade in post, especially if I've done a good job with my exposure and white balance. I always aim to try and get an image out of the camera that looks good off-the-bat. If I was shooting V-Log and looking to apply a heavy grade, I'd definitely go with 10-bit for that extra flexibility. In terms of shutter angle, yes, I always try and stick to the 180 degree rule and use variable ND to control my exposure. I like to switch on the sound levels just so I can see if levels are peaking. They never have but I guess it's just a control thing!
@@CameraGeeks I appreciate the response. There's definitely something to be said for "getting it right in camera". Why spend a load of time in post trying to correct things you could have avoided altogether in the first place. Even if you're not planning on much post work, the 4:2:2 10 bit files will provide smoother color transitions and less banding; however, the tradeoff is the far larger size. Definitely easier to play with the 10 bit files in post, too. More information equals more ability to stretch and pull before it breaks :). I'm just a hobbyist, so playing is fun.
Enjoyed this being a complete newbie with the panasonic G9 , If you could give me any pointers towards settings for filming birds in flight in slow mo that would be great
It's not something I've filmed myself but I would have your aperture at the highest number possible, whilst still achieving a decent exposure. This will give you a deep depth of field and better chance of keeping the birds in focus.

What is still not quite clear to me ... what is the reasoning for the 65% zebra ?!? Can you go a bit indepth ? Thanks :)
Hey Pan! If you're shooting in VFR mode (Variable Frame Rate), it won't record any sound I'm afraid. You can shoot slow motion by filming in 50/60p. It will play at normal speed until you slow it down in your editing program. Just make sure you don't slow your sound down too or it will go deep like Barry White!
Hi! You have made an extremely useful video! Please advise how you have got PAL and NTSC rec formats together: 25 and 30 fps, 50 and 60 fps. Were they in your camera from the beginning, or you somehow switched them on? In my case only NTSC formats are available.
Ahhh, don't worry. You're doing well understanding a second language anyway! You've probably discovered now, but zebras are lines that appear on the screen to show you which parts of the shot have reached certain exposure levels.
Hi WFG, Great video. Thanks you very much for sharing your settings and tips. I am wondering if you have tried the Cinelike-D/V in the G9 instead of Natural or even the curves ans why your final choice was the Natural style please ("just because I like" is - sadly - a valid answer of course ;-) )? Thanks
Hey Romrom. You're very welcome. I originally started shooting with the Cinelike D profile (on the GH5) and was happy with the results from that profile too. I think I switched to the Natural profile as it only required a very subtle grade and saved me some time in the editing process. To be honest, whilst choosing the best colour profile is important, I feel that nailing perfect exposure and correct white balance is much more crucial to getting nice footage. I hope that helps :)
@@CameraGeeks thanks for your return on experience. I think that I will follow your way, because it is also a big portion of m'y editing time getting the grading I want. I'll rather switch keep an extra flat profile for dark / difficult situation ;-). Thanks again!!
Wow, great video. I am considering buying this camera. Please, On the Rec Quality menu, is there a reason to choose 8bit over 10bit.I would personally prefer to use 10bit
At the time I was doing it for smaller file sizes and faster editing. Shooting 40 weddings a year, it saved 50% storage space and if captured well at the time of shooting, the 8-bit recording mode was fine as only a light colour grade was needed. Saying that, I now shoot on the S5ii, so 10-bit is the only option available 🤣!
Thanks very much. So what happens when you are taking stills but want to take some video footage instantly and press the red video record button on the top RH side of the camera? What specs does it record? We can set some choices on the top main dial with Custom 1, 2 and 3 but how do we do that? There are just so many different choices we can make which can be very confusing.
It can be usable in certain conditions but it's not reliable enough for weddings in my opinion. Saying that, I don't think I'd be comfortable using any camera's autofocus on a wedding...maybe for casual shots but not for key moments like the aisle walk. Hope that helps!
Great video, can I ask about SD cards for using 4k 10bit 422 (150mbps) . Do i need UHS II cards, or could I get away with the Sandisk extremepro UHS I U3 V30 cards ? Thanks
Hello, I was watching other videographers here on RUclips say that this Panasonic G9 camera's autofocus is horrible. I would like to buy this camera to work with events and also to do vlogs, and I need the camera to have good autofocus. Do you work with this camera? What's your opinion?
Hey George. I set all of these values on the regular manual video dial. To be honest, I haven't used the custom dials much but I do plan to test them out more in the future :)
Hey Alex. I've always found 8-bit to be just fine for my needs when shooting weddings and the files a bit smaller too. I normally nail exposure and WB pretty well and with the picture profile only needing a light grade, 8-bit does the job nicely. If I was shooting V-Log and doing heavy grades, I'd definitely consider 10-bit.
How do you stop/reduce motion blur? I get some pretty severe motion blur/judder with moving object or when panning when filming in 4K. I've tried increasing the shutter speed and I know the 180 degree trick but I still don't get smooth video for with moving objects.
Great video, thank you so much. Been waiting for this kind of vid for my G9 for a long time. Regarding your focus setting... is that now set for 'back button focus'? I've been having trouble getting that set. The G9 (with November '19's firmware upgrade.) is an amazingly customisable camera, but there's a LOT of permutations and combinations to learn.
Hey! So glad you enjoyed it! Yes, that is effectively back button focus. The great thing is you can use it while recording to re-focus if your subject has moved. Yeah, the G9 became a beast with firmware 2.0! I think it's probably a better option for a lot of people now over the GH5, especially if they have any interest in photography.
Hi, thank you for this video, great job! Can you tell me please why my camera show me only AVCHD and MP4 in "Rec format"? I don't have like you MOV or MP4 HEVC. Do you have instaled firmware update 2.2? Thanks!
Thanks GM studio! Glad you enjoyed it! I think I was on the latest firmware available at the time of making the video. Having the latest version would definitely be a good start. Have you been through all of the steps? I'll try and take a look at my camera next time I have it to hand.
Hey Malik. I'm definitely starting to make more videos that teach my style of shooting and show some behind the scenes. Check out this video here if you haven't already (ruclips.net/video/YEQjZd9cWDA/видео.html) and very soon I've got a new one coming about shooting cinematic shots using longer focal lengths.
@@malikimtiaz4434 haha... Good stuff. The next one will be released within the next couple of weeks. It's almost finished and I'm really excited to get it online. Using a longer lens made it more of a challenge but I got some great shots and the BTS should be quite interesting to watch.
In your next video you should explain how to grade a footage taken with the settings you proposed!... I was never able to recover authentic colors in Davinci Resolve if I had reduced saturation in my footage. For my personal taste the Standard profile provides the best/most accurate colors if I reduce to -4 the contrast. But the dynamic range of this profile really sucks!...
Hey Vladislav! I'll make a video on that soon. I'm using FCPX myself but I normally just crush the blacks a little, bring up the highlights and add some saturation. I agree that Standard can produce some really nice colours with zero work needed in the edit! As you pointed out...it's just a shame about the dynamic range.
Hey Evert. Yes, I assigned it to a soft button. I may change it in the future to the little rocker switch on the front corner of the camera, as that would be even better. In terms of how I use the IS Lock switch, I normally have it 'off' when shooting any shot involving movement, like tilts, pans and gimbal shots. However, if filming a static person or object, I keep it on as it results in a much more stable shot, as though I'd filmed it from a tripod.
Hey Shade. I mainly use the camera for video work but when taking photos, I tend to use Aperture priority mode with Auto-ISO (max 1600) and change the picture profile to standard. I appreciate this may not go into as much detail as you would like but I don't delve deeply into photography setting to be honest. I can highly recommend some of the following channels to learn more about photography on the Lumix system - Micro Four Nerds, Robin Wong, David Thorpe, Peter Forsgard, Sulantoblog and James Popsys. Hope that helps!
What a great video. I just started using the video settings on my G9. But I have a problem. I don't know how to export the video on my card to mu computer. I just got pictures, no video. Can you please help me with that. And thank you so much for your help. Luz
Hi Luz. They should just appear in one of the folders ready for you to copy across. If you are using two cards, just check which recording mode you have setup in your camera settings, as I know one of the modes send photos to card 1 and videos to card 2. Hope that helps!
Hi, i have just hoy this camera with a 12-60 3'5 5'6. Wich camera lema do you recommend on this G9 not two much expensive. Thanks for this crear video.
I'm gonna film a wedding next weekend. I primarily shoot 24p with my G9, and edit in a 24p timeline. Do you recommend to shoot all clips with 60p - just to have possibility to playback slow motion? Any downsides with 60p in normal speed?
Hi Widar. I would only shoot the bits you intend to slow down in 60p. For me, that means bride prep, walk down the aisle, confetti, couple shoot and first dance. Shooting in 60p and dropping it onto a 24p at normal speed will result in a slightly less cinematic look. This is because the shutter speed needed for 60p (1/125s) will result in less motion blur. However, this will only really be noticeable to film geeks like us so it's not a massive issue :)
I saw your video a few times but I have a question which you might help me out maybe even the video is 2 years old . Why did you turn off continuous autofocus in the setting ? If you put your camera on MF does it matter if it’s on or not ? I searched a lot about this but never found an answer .
Hey. I switched it off for video because I just didn't feel it was reliable enough, so I opted for full manual control. However, I did setup back button single AF. I used this to quickly acquire focus on a static target before recording. You can use this functionality even if the camera is in MF mode. Hope that helps!
Hi there, really enjoyed your video, as although I don't do weddings, I was very interested in your thoughts on best video settings. I have a G9 and mainly take videos of fairly slow moving steam trains, which cover quite a wide area, coming into view and going away. I would appreciate any advice you could give me in this situation. Until now (I'm in the UK), I have used 4k at 30 fps, as I upload to my youtube channel, but also view directly on my 4k TV. Should I be doing at 25fps. Also I have had the continuous autofocus set to on, but wonder if it would be better off. I haven't been using manual focus and set on shutter priority at 1/60 second. To be honest, my videos have come out okay, though once or twice did switch focus to another area. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks Peter. I'm glad you found it helpful. I would definitely shoot in 25fps PAL if you are based in the UK. You'll need to set shutter speed to 1/50 second for PAL. In terms of the continuous autofocus...if it's working for you and you are happy with the results, maybe just leave it switched on. Because the trains are moving quite slowly, it sounds like the camera is able to cope with it better. I prefer to use manual focus because it gives me full control, which is crucial when I'm filming at a wedding.
Hi Michael. We're all aiming for 70% exposure of the skin. I say 65% and then expose so you just start to see a few zebras on the face. The areas with zebras are a little over 65% and so effectively, very close to the 70% that we're aiming for. Other videographers might be telling you 75%/80% but advising you to wind it back a notch once you see the zebras. It's basically two different approaches to hitting that same 70% goal. Hope that clears things up!
I'm afraid I recently sold the G9 to buy a S5. Still a really great camera though. I think, from memory, that the camera lacks a shutter angle option. One of the few drawbacks. However, I can't say for sure so if anyone reading this has a G9 and can check, please correct me if I'm wrong!
@@CameraGeeks Hii Dear friend. I bought a G9 :=) no shutter angle just shutter speed :=) But doesnt matter angle and speed. Its reaaly super camera ım very happy
There is a super slow motion mode of 180fps when shooting in 1080p. I believe manual controls are quite limited when shooting in this mode, but hey, it least it exists!
Why disabled AF continue I can't understand this logic .. and 2nd why manual focusing... Out door filming how focus will work when we capturing moving subject please guide me beause I am making video for my YT.
I disabled auto focus because it's not reliable enough for weddings in my opinion. You may have heard about the 'focus hunting' that pretty much all micro-four-thirds cameras suffer from because of the autofocus system they use. It creates an unpleasant pulsing effect. I just choose to avoid autofocus completely and rack focus manually when needed, such as when the bride walks down the aisle towards me. It's not difficult when the subject is moving slowly and this is often the case during weddings. If things are moving more quickly, I set focus at a set distance, and move myself to maintain that distance between myself and the subject. I understand that fast, reliable video autofocus is necessary for certain real world uses and I'm afraid Lumix cameras are not the best choice if this is the case.
Hey Daddy! There is a 10 minute limit when shooting 4K50/60 but otherwise, the limit is 30 minutes, which is more than enough for most requirements. At a wedding, I'd always make sure you have one camera with unlimited recording as a safety shot during the ceremony and speeches/toasts.
Hey Wardy. To be honest, I've been more than happy with the results I get when in 8-bit. I don't apply heavy grades to my footage and just try to get the best exposure and white balance I can in camera. Also, I mainly film weddings and a typical wedding takes 300Gb! If I change to 10-bit I'll need 150Mbps and and extra 50% storage space. I may try shooting the "couple portraits" in 10-bit in the future though and playing around with that.
This camera has a recording limit of just 30 minutes, which is very bad when I'm filming long-term event, and it also heats up a lot. The camera is excellent for photography, but for working with videos of event and long interviews, it is very bad because of the recording time limit of 30 minutes, and the camera turns off every 10 or 30 minutes.
@@AKProductionIDNIt doesn't have such a setting. The only way to easily bypass this limitation is to use an external video recorder like the Atomos line.
First time I tried video I had Continuous AF on (Mode 2, whatever that means---Mode 1 was greyed out) and got a horrible chattering/vibrating/shuddering noise in the audio. Listened to the camera closely and verified it's coming from the camera. Turn off Continuous AF, noise goes away. Turn on Continuous AF, it's back. What a useless "feature".
I don't think the noise is an issue with all lenses...just some. I was more inclined to switch it off as the performance isn't 100% reliable. Occasionally, it works fine but I wouldn't trust it at weddings.
Thank you so much for this tutorial.

Great video; very useful; do you save all of these settings to the Custom Dial for quick access?
Hey George. I set all of these values on the regular manual video dial. To be honest, I haven't used the custom dials much but I do plan to test them out more in the future :)
That is a very useful tutorial!!!
Glad to hear that Daniel!
Great info mate, thank you!
No problem 👍
Great information.thanks. can I ask why you don't use the 10 bit 4k?
Thanks a lot! it was clear and very informative!
Thanks András... Glad you found it helpful!
@@CameraGeeks Many thanks for that. Stay safe!
That was really useful, thanks.
thank you for the tutorial!
You're very welcome!
@@CameraGeeks Done! Just install the last firmware to see all formats, thanks!!
Sir with this setting make one demo video for us that will guide us learn way you are filming, there is no video about that topic on youtube.
@@CameraGeeks 3 times watched
Thank You! Why don't you choose MOV 4-2-2 10 bit?
Hey dude! You're welcome. I've just explained my reasons in the reply to Wardy above. Hope that helps :)
All clear 👍
Very nice, thanks!
Glad you like it! The G9 is a great camera!
Awesome! Thank you
So you assigned the IS Lock to a "soft" function button? Do you have the IS Lock set to Off in the menu and how do you use this feature in practice?
You can make a video about photo settings??
Wedding Film Geeks thank you very much
Super helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I always use 24p here in europe since I only upload to youtube anyways, does it matter there what framerate you use?
Hi, i have just hoy this camera with a 12-60 3'5 5'6. Wich camera lema do you recommend on this G9 not two much expensive. Thanks for this crear video.
Hey Juan. What type of content do you plan to film with it? Ben
@@CameraGeeks several contents in cinemático way alternates with first planes. Already i have 25mm of Lumix and 12-60 Lumix too. Thanks.
Hi, is it important to buy the v-log licence and use it ?
Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Hi very helpful :) but my G9 only has the video mode Mp4 and AVCHD how can I enable the other modes ?
Hey dude. I think you probably need to update to the latest firmware to enable those options.
Wedding Film Geeks. Thank you!! 👍
@@CameraGeeks yes, it's really not a big deal, no client ever, ever notice this thing 😎
Forgot to recommend the 10-Bit Recording feature which is the Backbone of the CINEMATIC Feature in G9 for color grading.
Thanks very much

Grazi! Prego! 😉
Good review e good video.
Glad you enjoyed it! I should have a Panasonic G9 review coming to the channel in the next month so make sure you subscribe.
other videographers tell me to use 80% for my zebras for skin tones, what makes you say 65%
Thank you
You're welcome
thanks!!
Hii dear friend This camera has a 180d (shutter angle) option like gh5 ?
I'm afraid I recently sold the G9 to buy a S5. Still a really great camera though. I think, from memory, that the camera lacks a shutter angle option. One of the few drawbacks. However, I can't say for sure so if anyone reading this has a G9 and can check, please correct me if I'm wrong!
@@CameraGeeks Hii Dear friend. I bought a G9 :=) no shutter angle just shutter speed :=) But doesnt matter angle and speed. Its reaaly super camera ım very happy
No slowmotion for G9? Only 60p?
There is a super slow motion mode of 180fps when shooting in 1080p. I believe manual controls are quite limited when shooting in this mode, but hey, it least it exists!
My camera for some reason does not show the MP4 HEVC and MOV formats...why?
Hey Jose. That's very strange. Are you on the manual video mode (camera with an M next to it) when going into your settings?
@@CameraGeeks Hi! It was a software issue. I just installed the new firmware and voilá!
Explain... why you change sound output 03:15 . You just change it without explain... why are 2 modes to setup there????
quick question- can ou get this camera to shoot in log?
Hi Natalie. As long as you have the latest firmware, you can pay to activate a V-Log L upgrade :)
why did you not use cine D?
Cine D is great too. I've just found that Natural works really well with minimum effort needed during grading.
@@CameraGeeks sir thank you very much such a great comment today I will try this out. Please upload small demo for manual focusing any day..
does G9 still have that 10 minute recording limit?
Hey Daddy! There is a 10 minute limit when shooting 4K50/60 but otherwise, the limit is 30 minutes, which is more than enough for most requirements. At a wedding, I'd always make sure you have one camera with unlimited recording as a safety shot during the ceremony and speeches/toasts.
@@CameraGeeks thx
Why do you shoot in 8bit and not 10bit?
@@CameraGeeks Good to know. I sometimes feel the same with shooting stills in JPEG vs RAW.
video limit how can you remove it?
Hi. As far as I am aware, there is no hack to remove the time limit unfortunately.
Change the setting format for unlimited recording
Geez. Could you go Sony faster?
Great. Thank you!
You are welcome!
