- Let's battle the Sony A7S III vs the little Panasonic G9. Has Sony finally caught up to all the specs of the micro four thirds cameras in a full frame body that barely weighs more than the G9? @@LUITESLIFE Well I am viewing it on a calibrated monitor, but personal preference is a big factor of course.
@@colin-4794 That means nothing, because youtube is not calibrated to your monitor's standards and is low bitrate and not to mention there are variations between the host file and what is uploaded to youtube. My videos are exported at 100mbps but youtube only displays them at 40.

The G9 for the price is just unbeatable man. 4 years old camera and it still trades punches with new cameras waay above its weight.
Yup! G9 is one of the rare cameras where sales numbers have gone up over time, and that is because people have slowly discovered how good it is. Kasey thinks the G9 doesn’t have any great advantages. That might be true if the only thing the camera is used for is vlogging, but there is a long list of things the G9 can do that the Sony can’t do.

I've had tons of cameras over the years, and recently added a Sony A7III and Olympus EM5.3, but the G9 is still by far the best photographic tool I've used. Yes, the Sony can produce better results in difficult cases, but the Panasonic is just so much nicer to use.

Kasey's autofocus test should become industry standard.
The G9 is better value for money, and its true rival from Sony would be the A9. Also its autofocus was just fine, better than the R5 and R6 in your tests! TBH watching this I preferred the G9 thoughout, which was unexpected.
As a nature interpreter and camera lover I must say that today's episode was aiming straight for my heart ❤️ the G9 cost 1/5th of the A7SIII where I live , and that's a biggy 😁
G9 holds the sky better, exposes the skin better, the IBIS is still better in regular use IMO, and its MUCH better for static shots with IS LOCK engaged.
Colours are subjective, but I prefer the G9 here too.
Add the fact the G9 controls and ergonomics are market leading, and regardless of price there's still plenty of reason to choose the G9 over the A7Siii.
I still don't like shallow depth of field for a vlog. I'd 100% rather watch the G9 footage in your videos than the A7Siii.

@Little Idols sure Pana autofocus is pretty bad, on G9 it's the least bad in their m43 thus far. For anything that's not amateurish, you probably need to learn to manual focus on the Pana. I don't think you can use the A7Siii handheld for anything that is not amateurish. If you want to use A7Siii for your professional looking short films, you must use a gimball for sure.

Based on this video I would go G9, the autofocus was completely fine, I quite like the tasteful slower focus. I didn't see much if any pulsing at all. You've got a well-exposed Sky in the G9, a7s3 seemed to overexpose most of the time. G9 and leftover cash for a load of nice lenses. Magical.... Unless you're set on that Full Frame benefit... Next vid S5 vs A7SIII please sir :P
@IM HO But if the S5 holds a torch or surpasses the A7iii as the G9 does, it can help allot of people save some money. The A7SIII and S1H are more than most will ever need.

Full disclosure: G9 owner here. I was expecting the A7S3 to crush the G9 on all disciplines. For some reason the G9 battled WAY better than I expected. I know you dont like the Panas color, but I have to say: they were more natural, the Sony was too warm, too yellowish. The biggest surprise was in the dynamic range. Sony burnt 95% of all cloud shots, whereas the G9 at least resolved 50% of the clouds in the background. And I'm being conservative on that figure. True, wideangle IBIS makes the G9 corners wave at you, could fore sure be better. But the Sonys stab wasnt exactly good either, every step of yours (even the very slow and soft ones) produced a small bump in the footage. Toneh obviously way better on the Sony, for sure really beautiful. As is autofocus. G9 was surprisingly alright, Sony nailed it every time. This AF accuracy and reliability(!!) is just wonderful.
You are absolutely right to ask for the G9s unique M43 strengths, that apply to your vlogging style. There are none. M43 is neither light nor cheap nor small anymore. Its advantage is, and will always be, the telephoto range extension by factor two. Without any sacrifice in the wide and ultrawide angle department. Since you dont need any of that telephoto range advantage for vlogging I see why you dont benefit from the M43 anymore. Thanks for reviving the good ole' G9 once again, it did good, surprisingly good, overall.
G9 owner here as well and gotta say: If I had to choose a camera just by seeing this test, it would be G9 hands down. So much better colors, so much more natural look. Used to own a Sony A7 SII and really hated the menu system and the terrible LOGs which now both should have been improved. But those colors, man....looked very Fuji like!
One thing that really stood out to me in the autofocus test was essentially zero focus breathing on the G9, it looks a ton better when you leave the shot but framing stays the same.
The G9 has great dynamic range wow!

That G9 focussed hard today! From someone that’s got an A7Siii preordered I quite liked the image from G9! Just goes to show, cameras are so good now that you’re just literally splitting hairs when you take into consideration all the pros/cons of each.

I own 3 G9s for wedding videos. My wife owns a sony a7iii for her photography. For video I'd never get rid of the g9s. Even for photo the quality is nice. The price of the g9s is unbeatable

I feel when price comes into thought it a no brainer. Sony is amazing for what it is but the 3x jump in price isn't worth the slight difference the average viewer will notice. Camera C should stay with the Sony since he's got it but for beginners like me, the g9 is a no brainer
well sony ibis is not really fixed imo, even with digital on it looks very robotic and not very pleasing (warpy shit is very bad too on the paniboi)
Hmmm, Panasonic didn’t exactly trigger me in the worst ways like it usually does. Even if it would have, the squirrel / music content would’ve healed me. Outstanding video!
The Pani strikes back
The Lumix G9 was an incredible solid performer. Looks like your test was done prior to the releases of the firmware versions 2.4 and 2.5 (released in June and November 2021) so I cannot imagine how the gap will be now after all the great improvements done by Panasonic. Excellent comparison an happy that I will buy a G9 as it is the best value/performance camera in the market. All the best!

In what planet is the Sony ibis even in the lame active stabilization crop mode as good as the Panasonic ? Sony ibis is the worst. This is the advantage of smaller sensors.

The wobbly corners are really distracting. Yes the sony has a little shake but the image isn't warped, much better, much less distracting.

The Sony IBIS is still worse, the image quality is surprisingly similar and the exposure better on the Panny. And why does the Sony always look so contrasty? It's kinda weird. It just looks less detailed with the super high contrast.

4:37 the G9 looks like it has better or equal dynamic range. The whites are blown on the Sony, and even though the G9 is a little more under, the shadows aren't wildly less detailed.
4:41 what are the colours right now? Are the leaves yellow or are the leaves orange? Who got that correct? It's like the special Olympics of colour science here.
When you factor in the multiples of price difference for the camera + lenses, it would be hard to choose Sony.

Telephoto is one place Micro Four Thirds shines. 2x crop, also, in a way, means 2x zoom.
The better stabilization on a telephoto lens is ultra important, the slightest movement can create quite a shake of the image when out at 300mm (eq) or more.
During the stabilization comparison the on the harsh walk, i would argue the Sony looked as of there was no stabilization, whole frame wobbling all over. The g9, you were smooth and there was definitely wobbly corners.
The thing is, the g9 wobble corners are only on the widest of field of view, come in just a tad, now you have a full stabile frame, and the sony isnt even close now, and I'd argue this is based on sensor size alone, as the actual sensor moving will probably always be more noticeable, the bigger the sensor.... Physics.
I really don't like the Sony cameras I've used, but its been a while, and I am a complete Micro 4/3 fanboy, Olympus, more than Panasonic actually.....
The one thing I can say specifically about both Panasonic and Sony that are nice, is both companies do a fairly good job, offering the camera people want, for a fair price, when you buy a budget Sony or Panyboy, you get a decent camera, albeit some compromises to the top model, whereas the other companies do really good jobs offering multiple crap cameras, that force you into top tier price range.

The G9 is sooooo good! The A7S has so much yellow, it’s changing the color of the black coat. It looks good but the Panasonic is much more accurate with colors!

The amount of toneh in the Sony was distracting for me. My eyes are drawn back and forth from the face and the blurred background. The Pana's toneh seems more natural, it's easier for my eyes to find the face since the background isn't so eye-catching.
The only thing you've improved on in the life of this channel is your squirrel content... admittedly, it's pretty fantastic. i dare say best squirrel footage anywhere

The fact that the G9 is two years older and significantly cheaper, yet still on par with the Sony should be enough to make it the clear winner. Not to mention embarrassing as hell to Sony.

The contrast is a bit harsh on the Sony, but the Sony is just better looking.
After all that, IMHO the Pany has better color overall and it's just better cost/benefit wise. Every time I have bought something form Sony, I ultimately regret it.

Another example for Full-Looser-Frame and Micro-Four-Winner-Thirds. Better colours at the G9 and the Sony doesn't offer any advantages which would justfy the higer price.

G9 all the way. Ergonomics is outstanding, the viewfinder is exceptional, value vs performance is outstanding and it's build quality is pretty incredible for the money as well. Both are great cameras, but it's the G9 for me.
Goes out of focus... then says "i'm lost" while wearing the pony boi shirt! LOL In the opening A7S warmed my heart. After you swapped lenses it was shattered by reptilian yellow scales of death. Anonymous competitor LaughZZZZZ hard. This is still good content.
Honestly while the G9 was annoying to watch, I was still able to focus on you much more easily than with the Sony where the entire frame kept jumping.

The G9 is selling for £720 on eBay now, the A7S III is £3,800 - and to me at least, the colours on the Panasonic are more pleasing out of camera, the stabilisation is better and for similar Bokeh, the system is significantly smaller/lighter - at 1/5th of the price (!!!). Shouldn't the Sony be better at the price difference? -- With that said, I bought an X-T3 recently which has no stabilisation :D

They are both excellent cameras. I don't see enough difference to justify the price difference. Vlog with Leeming Lut is excellent on the G9. Autofocus on the G9 is absolutely fine. I agree the wide laiwa lens isn't good on the G9 (for moving type video like you shoot). I don't understand your comment about the lack of lenses for G9. There are so many lens options available.
I think he means lack of good wide angle lens. Most aren't fast or most a zooms

SUMMARY:
Colors: are subjective, but IMO I like Sony colors sometimes but most times I liked the G9 colors better.
Autofocus: is quite impressive on the G9, almost on par with Sony and it's WAY cheaper.
Image Quality: I'd have to go for a tie, they both look pretty awesome, and to crown a winner here, I'd have to pixel peep each one.
Auto Settings (Exposure, etc.) : seems like the G9 is more smooth in that department.
Overall the G9 is STILL a SUPER IMPRESIVE camera despite the fact that its almost 3 years old!

Honestly, the G9's image just looks better. When I look at the Sony's image, it reminds me of my yellow tinted cycling glasses, I see the world similarly when I wear them. The toneh is good enough on the Panny boy too, it is more subtle than the Sony, but it is enough to close off the background and make you focus on the subject, with Sony, at 20mm f1.8 is a bit better, but you can also easily get to the point where it looks worse, with a 24mm f1.4 lens for example it just looks distracting. Auto exposure is perfect on the G9, Sony seems to not be as good, it is trying to guess if you want your face of the sky exposed well, when it should always be the face. The stabilization is better on the G9 as well, even with the warpy shit. The Sony shakes the entire picture, while the G9 only shakes the edges. Unless you're planning to hide in the edge of the frame like an idiot, the G9 is just better. The only real reason why I'd ever go with the Sony is if you shoot action, there the autofocus matters, for regular vlogs the G9 is good enough, and low light videos. If you plan of shooting in a dark forest or in a haunted mansion at night, get the Sony for sure
You meant CONTINUES AUTO focus...I see, after paying 3x more for FF sensor, the only excuse is left today for cameras fans/haters, is Continues Auto Focus with 70% more "tone"/SDF...blaming Contrast Detect Focus System is the fastest point-to-point system today, which is still works in the dark. By the way, I am not claiming that, do some research... the limiting factor here is the lens motor speed and face recognition AI software(TBD)... and yeah... you can blow out(de-focus) half of a shrimp head with FF while I can isolate entire shrimp with mft system from 4 times longer distance... what's the point? Today, If you know what you doing you can go with either system... And, @Panasonic, if you reading this, explain to the people, where are a simple cheap manual focus cine lenses? If you can't make one, make a mft copy from Cosmicar 8-48mm f1.0 and send it to me for free... that's a real "conspiracy" here or the dumbest thing you can do while building best cameras for video for entire decade...
At 4:50 the G9 looked perfect including the stabe and Toneh. At 6:30 and just before, the G9 just looks better. Plus the G9 is $999 vs $3500 Sony. Both look great at various times but overall the Panny has better colors. BTW the Panny AF looked spotless.
And again, m43 is a third the price. So there's that.

As awesome as the sony is, as a biased G9 owner, I will point out that today in the UK I can buy three G9's (with kit lens) for the price of one a7siii body.
Also consider that the G9 is three years older (i think) and was actually designed as the Lumix photography loser camera.
The G10 with pony of hope phase detect will destroy your channel. Maybe 🙂

The reason I love my G9 is confirmed here. While some Panasonic cameras may give problems, focus, both AF and MF work well on the G9, whereas while the Sony AF is excellent, the Sony MF is not so good.
There are so many things that are advantageous on the G9. 6K and 4K Photo for a start. Stop motion animation. Super teles that are less than half the weight. Timelapse built in. Top LCD screen. Focus stacking which is huge for macro shooting. Focus bracketing. High Res sensor shift. Flash sync port. Double continuous burst speed. The Sony is a great camera, but the G9 holds its own, and in many things that are important to me beats the Sony. Focus stacking, flash sync port, and stop motion animation were the big ones for me. Yes, despite common RUclips opinion, cameras have more uses than just vlogging.

As a Sony camera owner, I have to admit when you are sitting by the tree the Panasonic looked better you could see the blues in the sky.

Why would I care about the unimportant trees in the background if my head is constantly shaking? Sony colors are nice, a little too bright in some situations. Definitely superior autofocus. And it's 3x the price, haha. That's where the Sony is falling behind a lot. Why even bother comparing the two.
