I'm still rocking a G9 for several years after over a decade of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Perfect? No, but it does so many things well. Panasonic has emerged as a power player in a market that was Nikon/Canon ten years ago. I'd like to see a progression of the G9 that offers what we love about that camera in a smaller package.
The Lumix G9 is unquestionably an excellent hybrid camera for a bunch of applications. It excels in action and casual photography, and video recording in good light. For me, it’s one of the most comfortable and ergonomic mirrorless cameras I’ve ever had. Thank you Panasonic for the awesome improvements of this camera thru numerous firmware updates. What a great customer support!
The moment they drop a camera with a hybrid AF is the moment I will be content to sell out of my current system. Also props to Lumix. They have a RUclips channel that is very active and has great accessibility for their users.
I'm looking forward to the new phase-detect AF in S5/S1 mark II body till the end of this year or go with A7IV/A7C or the new Nikon Z6 mark III which is going to be by the end of this year.
@@CO8848_2 There is also the argument, who the F uses multi thousand dollar equipment to shoot video/photos of his kids on the soccer field, LOL. I mean, if we could do this in the film days, surely, you can do it today.
Nice to see Jordan take the positive stance for once! For the price of Panasonic M43 cameras, they deliver great value and image quality. My use is primarily still photos. I wouldn't want a bigger FF system at this stage in my life. I have no problems focusing my G9, even on fast moving birds. You just need to learn how to set it up, and then spend the time practicing. Oh, and I also own the dreaded G100 but it's a great photo camera too, especially when matched with the 15mm f/1.7. Might try the 9mm next. Thanks guys!
From using cameras like the Sony A7SIII, some from Blackmagic, Canon R system, etc. I have to say that Panasonic is almost flawless, its the most Solid system for videographer and cinematographers, I love my GH6 and other Lumix Bodies, and Panasonic is one Hybrid autofocus away from dominating the market.
I love my S5. I do wish it had some sort of phase detect auto focus but I'm primarily shooting photos so it isn't a deal breaker. Love the colors and dynamic range.
With Panasonic there's always been a choice of focus modes for stills and video and it is largely a matter of choosing the right one. One size does not fit all. The default video focus is deliberately slower for smoother transitions, but that can be changed. When switching from stills to video (G9 here) there's a lot of changes to be made, and changed back, like mic level, Photostyle (cine, customised), focus mode (customised), etc, etc. The Red record button in PASM and the -M Creative Movie mode, are not the same at all. So I save my video preferences into a Custom slot.
@@SuperSuperka If all you wanted was a point and shoot, uses an iPhone, problem solved. Simply learn to use your Lumix camera, and you will nail focus like a pro. Lumix cameras are not for the lazy… …
@@jeffslade1892 no matter how many modes you have on Panas it just unreliable. I do have Panasonic camera, it continious AF is useless, oneshot is okeish but often fail. I need continious, and Sony a7c has it perfect. If you film static shots, than you can live with Panas
Still the best youtube channel of its kind. I think this works best when Chris isn't 'overly competitive' and Jordan isn't similarly too 'consensus seeking'. This was a balanced overview of Panasonic's offerings as they stand today. Keep up the good work!
I have been using Panasonic cameras since I had a GH4 then upgraded to a GH5 and now have a GH6 as well. Things I like: I love the improved color science over time with these (especially moving away from the orange like skin tones of the GH4 to the no longer reddish skin tones of the GH6, which I find a bit more natural looking. Menu layouts are easy to use and I like the ergonomics of the camera and how most buttons can have a custom function assigned to them. Focus transition is very useful to have as it allows you to nail consistent focus pulls with AF lenses. Anamorphic with de-squeeze V-Log with LUT display RAW video output - Although I really wish Panasonic hadn't have left out 4K resolution RAW and ProRes in their latest GH6 firmware update. Firmware updates even when a newer camera in the line up comes out. They even made the GH5 II so it could have updates that the GH5 couldn't get due to hardware limitations. Video assist features like waveforms, zebras, IBIS, peaking, levels, monochrome live view, night view etc... USB-C battery charging/power Dual native and Dual ISO on Panasonic cameras that improved the video dynamic range. IBIS display on screen so you can see how much the camera is shaking Open gate full sensor recording with onscreen markers for different aspect ratios for cropping in later in editing. Things I don't like: GH6 photo dynamic range at lower ISOs isn't great, despite the higher megapixel count and high res modes being better than other MFT cameras out there. Auto focus for video isn't the best, its improved on the GH6 and while I don't rely on it, I would like it to be up to par with Sony and Canon. Lack of Panasonic 100mm+ macro lenses with IS as that is a lens type and focal length that could be very useful for insect photography and videos. Focus peaking doesn't always work so well for certian subjects. I use my GH6 to take videos of landscapes, insects and plants and I find it doesn't always show peaking on the subject and I can't always tell if it is in focus or not 3:56 - There is a rumoured S5H, possibly a S5 sized body with S1H features. I would like the color science of the GH6 in it as I think the colors are improved and there is no longer the reddish skin tones. 9:45 Me. I currently only use Olympus lenses on my GH6 (12-40 and 60mm macro), until I finally get my pre ordered 9mm f/1.7. I use them because compared to the Panasonic 12-35 the Oly 12-40 is sharper edge to edge where I have noticed, especially at 12mm the 12-35 is noticeably soft, especially when doing landscape shots. I also use the Olympus 60mm as its currently the longest MFT macro lens. If Panasonic had a sharp MFT 100mm macro with IS, I'd get one straight away as that is one of the few lenses that seem neglected in the lens line up and I sometimes find the 60mm a bit short and a little tricky to use without built in IS which wouldn't be compatible with Panasonic bodies.
@@TuinleiBob Just because there isn't any perfect camera doesn't mean certain issues can't be solved. When every other brands has phase-AF, that is a really weak argument. Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 are practically perfect cameras without any compromises.
The G9 is the best platform I think they've put out. Add the battery grip to it and you can literally shoot photos all day. I've never had it overheat and I live in Texas. Not as bulky as the GH6, but still has some great mid tier video features especially with the Paid Upgrade. 10 Bit VLog (l) on a sub $1000 (used) camera is unheard of in the market. Once Panny figures out phase detect and real dual gain ISO, I really don't see a reason to switch out.
Yep I love mine for online training with a camlink and awesome vacation photos. I use the 12-60 @2.8 for work, and I’ve got the 50-200 for my kids sports. If they come out with a g10 with modern focus and some of the updated video features I’d probably upgrade.
Oh, I did get it to overheat just once. But that is when I tried exceeding the 10min 4k-60p limit by doing HDMI capture. At 1080-60p over HDMI, I can literally leave it on 24/7 with a dummy battery.
I loved my Olympus and Pentax cameras, but the Lumix G9 … it’s as if Panasonic took an imprint of my hand then built the camera to fit it. I love the G9; it’s a fun camera with which to shoot.
I love the color science of Panasonic. Panasonic had two great cinema cameras, the Eva-1 and the Varicam. Sadly, I think they've dropped out of that market. I remember when the Eva-1 was rumored and expectations were through the roof. And the Varicam with the dual ISO was a camera used on a number of high profile films and TV series.
I've been a Panasonic user since 2009, starting with the GH1. During that time, I've owned a number of Nikon cameras, mostly full frame, and a couple of Olympus cameras. As time has passed, the other cameras have simply faded into the shadows of the past. Panasonic cameras are simply the most user friendly. The only thing I sometimes miss is the Nikon D810 at ISO 64, with its insanely workable files and beautiful colours. However... where's the GX8 II? GH5 II tech would be fine with me. In spite of its rather harsh limitations (no IBIS during video, shutter shock, 2.5 mm mic jack, no headphone jack, SD card at the battery compartment...), it's such a fantastic camera. It even shoots beautiful video in spite of its limitations in that area. I own and use 2 x GX8 and would buy two properly specced Mark II over any other camera. And please give us a G100 Mark II with IBIS and no crop. It's such a beautiful little camera with a really nice viewfinder. I would love a Mark II to pieces.
I'm also sticking with my GX8 until they make another weatherproof RF style body. and if they don't, I think I'll still be happy with the GX8 for quite a while. I thought about getting a G9 for a while, but I spent the money on a PanaLeica 50-200 instead. money well spent.
I'm writing this comment in hopes that Panasonic sees this for their research: As an S1H and GH5s user who's been purely Panasonic since the DVX100b (with one exception when the Canon 7D came out), I've made a promise to myself that I will not invest in another mirrorless body that doesn't have PDAF or something AT LEAST as reliable and convenient to use. I can make anything I want with my CURRENT camera combination, so it doesn't matter how many stops of DR or how many FPS you can squeeze into a mirrorless body. I don't care anymore. The only thing I truly care about right now is RELIABLE video autofocus, as it allows me to be more flexible with my shot selection as a single camera operator, and I will definitely move on to another camera company within the next few years if you don't take video AF seriously. Your cameras are absolutely amazing! This is your ONLY weak point, and PLEASE stop ignoring it. (Sorry for the caps. I'm a bit tipsy and very passionate about this)
Good points in this review guys. I like my Panasonic G9 and GX85 fine with all 7 of my lenses but I would like to see a weatherproof GX9 or G85 sized weatherproof camera with a larger stacked sensor to bring it up to date in 2022/23. I'll buy that as soon as it comes out.
I have the G80 and love it , owned it since 2019 . My very first Panasonic was the FZ28 and that I loved a lot . Had a few other brands in between the FZ28 & the G80 but I do prefer the Panasonic over them all and I would like the GH5 or GH6 for my next Panasonic camera .
Entertaining and knowledgeable as always. One more thing on Chris' side: Panasonic is totally neglecting L-Mount telephotos lenses and relying on Sigma in this respect. I mean: What's the longest focal length S-series lens: 300 mm.
GM1 with stabilisation, no crop 4k, 9mm lens, internal ND, focus limiter, and a flip up screen (because I can mount a mic elsewhere, and I don't want cables blocking the screen). My G7XII basically but with an option for a wider lens, and mic in.
Pretty sure if you want the 47MP sensor in a small Panasonic body you want the Q2... as 28mm is a great focal length for video... Oh and on firmware updates my GH5 is pretty much abandonware, just some simple things like more anamorphic ratios would be so handy... and trivial... Plus you do get that everyone except Canon and Sony use the same processors in their cameras (although the delayed release of the GH6, by what, 2 years, may mean it's on a previous generation). They all use Socionext Milbeaut SoCs (in the unlikely case you weren't aware), although the camera companies give them names to suggest they are their own chips... Milbeaut aka... Olympus Truepic Pentax Prime Panasonic Venus Engine Leica Maestro Fuji X-processor Nikon Expeed Sigma True GoPro certainly in the Hero 8 (Socionext had a competition to win some), I'd assume the 9/10 too, maybe others...
I upgraded from the gh5 to the s1 this year and I couldn't be happier. I find the s1 takes great photos and getting use to the way it captures raw took a while, but what a great camera. Even using only GOP video options it's amazing and I personally would probably not use autofocus if they bring PD to the next S-series camera so PD doesn't bother me. Unless I start vlogging haha. Would definitely love faster frame rates of 120pfs 4k and no crop on 4k 60 or 120 if they come out with that in the next release. Holding onto my gh5 as a b cam until a new s-series camera comes out. Props to Lumix. My favourite image quality of the different cameras I've tried and edited. Best for firmware, and having constant streams and q&a is beyond what other companies do. Props to DPReview as well. Love the channel
I have an S5 I only use for photos. I think it would be great if Panasonic offered an optional firmware update that stripped out the video functions, simplifying the menu. They could add photo features such as when you specify a vintage lens for the i.s. the focal length is recorded in the photo data. Or, they could offer firmware for video only.
I do love the little GX8, which is a sexy camera, a Leica for those who can't stomach the Leica price. However, constant focus-fail for wildlife really gets me. The worst thing is I upgraded to a G9 and still seem to get better focus results with my original Nikon Z7, which people say has terrible AF. I wish it wasn't so, given how nice and compact the Panasonics are!
UPDATE THE GX8 ALREADY!!! I love my camera *so, so much* and lots of other GX8 owners feel the same way but Lumix has chosen to abandon us entirely. After 7 years, we've never even made it beyond firmware version 2. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Everyone is talking about Panasonic should move to Phase Detect Autofocus.. and I'm curious if they do that, do all L-mount lenses (Lumix, Sigma etc) would work with new Panasonic DPAF bodies or in this case they would need to redevelop all they L-mount lenses line as far as I understand they were designed for contrast AF? And I'm talking about continuous AF in videos for sure.
I've used the S1 and S1R since they first came out. The firmware updates have improved the cameras considerably since the early days of their release. I never minded the weight as the controls are well placed due to that extra size. The colours and the flexibility within the raw files is great. I'm not a videographer, so the AF is less of a concern for me. However, from a business viewpoint, they probably need to get that side of their G and S systems sorted because Panasonic and 'bad AF' have become synonymous. This is a shame as the cameras have so many features and components that make them stand out from the competition.
One thing I haven't heard much of, a good and bad, is the lack luster pre-set profiles and the immense ability to modify those settings in the menus. This has been a panasonic thing for so long. I got my HPX-170 and after reading the manual, I was able to manipulate the settings and get a better image. It's not just my own ego clouding my take on the results, as the company I worked for always asked why my camera looked better than their HPX-170s and had me copy the settings to theirs. I rented a DVX-200 and did the same thing, but the improvement I got was even more noticeable, in sharpness, color and AF. I was able to take a GH4 and push the noise out of the mids more into the shadows, increase DR, and get it to look ok at iso 1250, instead of 800 which seemed to be the limit before. Put those in my GH5 and got great results too. Why on earth some random dude with a user manual can consistently find a better setting than a team of company engineers is beyond me, but that's how it's gone. So thumbs down for the pre-set profiles, big thumbs up for being given the ability to do so much customization.
Good to see the LX100 get a shout out, great little camera. I’d like an upgrade to my G9. Love the ergonomics, menus, evf, size/weight, especially for wildlife. Would really like better af for bif, Live Composite and Pano. An upgraded PL100-400 with a smooth zoom ring would be good too 👍
Shooting both m43 and Nikon full frame. Appreciate m43 for size and generally very nice lenses. Just back from a trip to Lofoten Norway where G9 + GX9 + 9mm + PL 12-60mm + 35-100II 2.8 was my main kit. Biggest wish - that Panasonic continues to support stills photography in m43! Future models I would be interested in - G9II with the GH6 sensor. Same physical size as G9. Keep the memory cards the same, 2xSD (both UHS II compatible) or 2xXQD/CFexpress, not a mix. Support for both XQD and CFexpress if using that card format. GX9II with GH6 sensor. Same physical size as GX9. Single card slot ok but add UHS II support. GM5II with G9 or GH6 sensor and mechanical shutter down to 1/4000s. LX100III with GH6 sensor and better weather sealing (to avoid sensor dust) General areas for improvement - AF speed. Eye AF, tracking. - Dynamic range - Dual IS with Olympus lenses.
I agree they should put the S1R sensor in a smaller and lighter body. I had one briefly. Too big and heavy. This is why lightly used S1Rs are selling for about half the new price. With its big EVF the G100 is fine for photo work. I like mine a lot.
Great video and points as always. I am currently torn between choosing Z9 and gh6 for video. I feel Panasonic skin colors are perfect. Do you have any recommendations for video camera price being no objective.
I really hope that Panasonic really at some point changes the auto focusing system, I think overall they will be in amazing position. I currently shoot with the S1H / S5 but I agree with most of Your points, I think we need a new S camera, imagine an S1H ii, or a G9 ii, even something like a S5H
I’m been a Panasonic shooter for nearly 8 years. I started with the G7 after selling my Canon EOS T6 and then upgraded to a GX9. Now I own the GX9, G95 and the S5. Currently debating whether or not to sell the S5 because I have the G95 but for now I’m holding on to it. The S5 represents the best bang for the buck when it comes to having a solid 24MP full frame camera for photography. I’m a street, travel, and documentary photographer who does a little photojournalism when the opportunity arises. Video is not my thing although I added the S5 to my kit to be able to do video should I need to. Hence why I’m evaluating the G95 for the same reasons. As a photographer, I like the ergonomics of the Panasonic cameras. Like you said, they’re not sexy at all. It’s all about industrial design and functionality. You’d think they were a German company for that reason alone. 🤣 That said, I don’t really their autofocus as a problem because for how I shoot especially between f5..6-f11 what I need in focus always is. What’s I’d love to see from Panasonic is an update to the GX series. A GX9-2 or GX10 would be great but to your point in this video it seems they’ve abandoned that line of cameras. Now when I want sexy in a camera body I shoot my Fujifilm X-Pro3. It has all the sexy one would need in a camera body.
I picked up and S5 (got a great deal on a brand new body) and it's great for a stills shooter. The single point AF is super fast, the sigma i-series are really nice and the sensor produces lovely results. Great crop options, good menu's, tweakable jpeg options, the back screen is awesome and despite the fact the EVF resolution is bemoaned by some, there is no issue at all, and the PIP for manual focus is excellent and super clear and sharp. I moved from having used Fuji's since the X10 owning a few different bodies (x100f, x-pro1, x-t2), and after loving the photo output of the X-Pro1 (which I rebought) I can say the S5 with the Sigma 45mm 2.8, which can be picked up at crazy prices used, produces wonderful photos. In fact I'd say the Sigma approach matches a lot of the things Fuji users hold dear (smooth sharpness, nicely built, compact metal lenses). And from what I've seen, those S-Pro lenses, zooms and primes, look incredible (although far too big for me).
Jordan, nail on the hammer with the S1R sensor in something like an S5. As great as the S5 is it lacks a little with the 24 mega pixel sensor. I use an old Canon R (which is only 6 mega pixels more) when I shoot landscapes but turn back to the S5 for video bits. Panasonic though is ergonomically the best camera I have ever used.
A while ago I tested all hi-res full-frame cameras for a few weeks to replace my X-H1 set for outdoor fashion shoots. The S1R blew my mind. Fantastic sensor, easily the best IBIS, the best EVF (together with the SL2) esp. when you wear glasses and great ergonomics when you have to work with them all day. This is imo the best professional grade full-frame hi-res stills camera for everything but fast action sports. Except for two things at the time: it lacked Profoto support (now fixed) and no Capture One support for tethering. Whenever that comes, I’ll switch right away. Their S Pro lenses are gorgeous for photos and video alike (not the 1.8 24 and 35 for photos though) and you’ll always have the Summicron SLs too if you need that extra notch. Today pre-owned S1 and S1R are a steal.
Panasonic needs an internal raw option. Uncomressed 1080p raw would be fine (if that's all the camera can handle). Raw is great to have if your filming water or chrome.
Like Panasonic and own one. Great purchase for the price. Value is one of their strength across le line. My worry is concerning photography on m43. Where is the future?
Tidbit: Nikon Z probably uses a DFD like focus algorithm with their lenses, because their version of PDAF doesn't seem to need a final bit of contrast detect to nail focus like other PDAF systems.
The 50mm 1.4 is a stunning lens that I never want to give up. Like you I was hoping for the full lineup. I understand them getting the 1.8 out but I really would love for them to continue the series.
Thank You Guys for your Videos! Most definitely the GM & GX Series are missed! These Series should be "Luxurious Little" cameras, especially the GX Series. Not bigger than a GX 1 Plz (Beautiful Camera BTW) with a huge viewfinder (GX !0 maybe) because after that size there is should I even say plenty of APSC camera out there instead (even if smaller than the GX8, Thank You, the GX 9 is still borderline too big). I Can Not wait for a LX 100 III (Gorgeous Camera BTW)) with TILT Rear Screen, if not I will be Happy with my Phone, or a GM 5 II (Good Looking Camera BTW)) with TILT Rear Screen if not again I will be Happy with my Phone, or a like GX 1 Compact Beautifully Crafted, Luxurious and Loaded future GX 10 w a huge viewfinder & TILT Rear Screen ! Which would make sense in therms of Pocket Portability but also Desirability if it is Premium as well ! You Guys Praise Panasonic for it’s Video & Workhorse abilities, but you moan about the AF all the time, How do you guys focus during the making of an episode, Focus Peaking, Zebras or else, what is your "Focus Workflow" while shooting like Jordan? Thank You Guys & Thank You Panasonic !
I personally think the Panasonic should bring in a PDAF focus system in video like the other main brands for its full frame camera. Everything else is great about the camera. For people who want the camera for dual purpose pro photo and video, full frame sensor is the way to go, as photo quality is simply superior to m43. Add the amazing video performance and the S5 is a great camera. Just need PDAF to be perfect, although the S5 is still a good camera.
Full frame photo/video quality being superior to m43 is a very bold claim my friend. I'm just going to assume you haven't tried m43 and full frame cameras side by side.
I love the Panasonic cameras, I've got 3 of them (gx80, g80, lx100). But then again, I only shoot 4k videos for my RUclips channel. If I were more photo oriented, I'd talk differently I guess. Anyways, great video guys, thumbs up!
I own both GX8 and S5. GX8 is still a very capable street photography machine after all those years and it looks feels fantastic. Sad to see no more GX series coming🥲I truly wish Panasonic load an APSC sensor into GX body with L mount, those F1.8/F2 FF prime lenses would fit pretty well.😂
Owning two GX8 bodies and one G9 body, I wish for a GX8 Mark II. The image quality and autofocus from all three bodies are excellent for my photography. By the way, the 50-200 lens is superbly sharp even wide open.
I got an OM-1 last month. Excellent camera no complaints, but as for the ergonomics the G9 is still my favorite camera. I had and I have no intention to sell it or retire it. And btw the 10-25mm is excellent for landscape photography too. As for stabilization Olympus lenses don't even get full stabilization on Olympus bodies unless they are pro lenses. Don't only blame Panasonic on this mess please..
I'm primarily a Nikon shooter, going back to film days. I got into the mft kick some years back using a LX-100 as a street camera. Then I "upgraded" to a GX85 so I could have more lens options. Then I made a mistake of moving up to an Olympus M1 mkii which is a nice camera but for me ended up defeating the purpose of a compact camera. I got into mft for size and found the Olympus to be a couple of mm away from my Z7. Yes the zoom lens sizes are quite different, but I shoot mostly primes with my full frame cameras. I have been through a lot of gear over the years, most have been retired to a shelf like Knick knacks. I still shoot weddings and events with a pair of D750s. I use the Z7 for portraits and landscapes and the gx85 for street photography. I'll never own the Z9 because it's just too large. Maybe a camera with Z9 guts and no built-in grip? Z8? Sony does but at this stage in my life I'm not changing all the glass I own. Once in a while I'll pick up my LX-100 because it's fun to use. Sadly, the Olympus is collecting dust. My apologies for being long winded.
Have a Lumix G95, GX85 and GX9. Patiently waiting for the G9 successor hopefully with PDAF. If nothing announced in the next 12 months then see ya Panasonic.
Would like to see an updated S1R with computational photography capabilities specifically blending multiple Raw files into a single Raw file with insane DR.
I've been using a G9 for three years and I'm very happy with it. Together with the 100-400mm lens you have a good and lightweight option for wildlife photography. Together with the 14-140mm lens this covers all my needs. I find the play of the bayonet annoying. The diopter wheel is very difficult to adjust. The lens hood of the 100-400mm is defective. I have yet to find an affordable lens hood to replace mine.
OMFG - lens interchangeability - sharing lens data between bodies MUST be a feature of EVERY member of the M43 group. Especially Panasonic and Olympus.
Support for cross-platform M43 lenses? I'm quite happy with this. Only minor complaints there- dual IS, aperture ring, functions button, etc. The basic features still work just fine and I switch back and forth all the time.
I have been using G Series since it's inception, and in particular the GH series. The cameras have improved with each model and I specifically shoot Aussie Rules Football, Surfing, and Bird/Wildlife. My main "go to" lens is the Leica 200mm/f2.8, but have been hoping for years that Panasonic would push the envelope a bit further and release a 300mm/f2.8! I know that Olympus has a f4 version, but as you state there are compatibility issues which affect the performance and therefore the reason I use the system in the first place. Also the lens needs to be f2.8 for low light use and the ability to AF with converters. The physical size of the lens would need to be similar to the old Nikkor F 300mm/f2.8. Now unfortunately I hear that Panasonic is going to ditch still image models altogether and concentrate on video centric models. The annoying part is they are discontinuing the awesome 200mm and blaming poor sales as the reason to do all this. The reason for poor sales is that they missed the mark with the reach of that lens. You cannot rely on a 400mm/f2.8 for surf and wildlife and most arena type sports. If they had made a 600mm/f2.8 equivalent prime lens that could use the converters too, it would have completed the reason for G Series in the first place . . . size and versatility! The 100-400/f4-6.3 is a very good seller, but it does not have the speed and sharpness at the top end, I know as I pretty much own every g series lens. Now obviously proving to be a bad investment for still photography. Keep up the great reviews guys, have been a long time viewer / subscriber.
Wishlist: Phase detect hybrid G9 Mark II with 25 MP backside illuminated sensor with more Leica-esque Design Queues. More sexy, less utilitarian. For 1899,- - would wipe the floor with OM1‘s !!! Anyway.
Have you not wondered why a Panasonic stabilised lens on an Olympus body stabilises better than the other way around? It's the practically undocumented "Olympus Dual IS", a bit of both OIS+IBIS. (see Gordon Laing's 2020 review of the Olympus 100-400). It's not up to Sync-IS or Dual-IS but better than OIS or IBIS alone. Put your ear to it and hear both stabilisers whirring. With an Olympus-IS lens the Panasonic body will use just that that (see Panasonic lens compatibility chart). Now the E-M5ii (which can Sync-IS) does not provide all the stabiliser options of the E-M1ii, but if you set "Use Lens IS" Off, it does it, and so does the PEN-F.
Love my Gx80/85 but i hate the EVF. There is currently nothing to move onto. The GX9 is very similar but with the new sensor but in the end, the same EVF which puts me off. I love the little G100. Got ragged on for vlogging but as a travel stills cam, it’s great; despite no IBIS. Obviously an issue for many within this sytem. The older, larger bodies are great but i want to stay with a smaller body; the raison d’etre of the entire system for me. Hope they can release an updated GX model with a better EVF and a mic input.
I started with a panasonic camera and I absolutely loved it. I wish I could have gone with a g9 over the e-m1iii I got instead. The autofocus and lack of compatibility with the 12-100mm f4 is what killed it for me though. I still use some panasonic lenses on my olympus camera, they work fine and produce great results. I do still long to return to panasonic if I'm being honest, maybe one day I'll end up with an s series camera if they add phase detect
What you mean by lack of compatibility with the 12-100 Olympus? You mean missing Dual IS on Pana G9. Cause I have that Combo, and the autofocus is blazing fast.
trying to hold over for the 2nd Gen S-line cameras, even if they're thick headed and don't do phase detect I'm sure it will be 10x more advanced then the AF currently used. And i can work with that
The S5 is underrated as a stills camera. Single focus is fast and accurate, files from the 24mp sensor are indestructible and it has neat features, like back button AF working with the lens in manual focus mode and 96mp high definition capability, which is great for interiors and still life. As someone who uses manual focus lenses for video exclusively, none of the S5 downsides affect me. Current Panasonic UK deals strongly suggest something new is in the pipeline, because S5 prices are crazy cheap for such a high spec'd camera.
@@dustinjenkins8215 They need a cinema camera that uses there excellent L-mount lenses. They are trying to selling to videographers but they don't have a video body that the lenses can be used on like the Sony system.
Why not an LX 100 Dlux 7 with fixed or interchangeable lens..my A7R3 is amazingly good but not quite pocketable ..My RX100 200mm is great but i use my phone to send instant pics to family
Chris with his tiny baby hands. As someone with normal hands, I have to say I love the grip of the S cameras. In fact the ergonomics are just wonderful on Panasonic cameras.
One thing Panasonic could improve on besides the AF is their pre-amps. While they are not bad, they are still fairly noisy (on GH5 and S5 at least). Also, for some reason it's been five generations and then some and the gain still only goes down to -12 dB. Was it that hard to extend it to at least -18 dB via a firmware update, Panasonic? Oh, and while we're at it, fix the focus peaking on S5 please, will ya? Once you hit record it becomes basically invisible and the image on the monitor gets soft too.
I have an S5 for stills only, they occasionally do some really great two lens deals , although not optically perfect The 20-60 is more useful than a 28-80 as you can crop the 60mm if needed, and your stuck with whatever wide end you have, ergonomics are so so for me, a slightly deeper hook for the top finger in your grip would make it feel far more secure. I find the numerous focus mode difficult to understand and navigate.
Great video boys. As always. You re the best. Panasonic Lumix cameras re the best as well. Proud owner of 12 (yes. twelve) Lumix cameras. Never looked back.

Guys! You are the best. I even look at camera stuff I would never buy just for the entertainment! Please continue!!!!
Love this video❤️, they are telling the truth about Panasonic🙊 My first semi professional camera has been the Lumix G7. I I've been using it for photo and video and I am very satisfied with the results. I know it has its issues, but it is a matter of get used to and do the best with the equipment you have. In the future, I will buy a new Lumix micro four thirds and someday a Leica. Until then I will continue to use my Lumix G7 😃🙌
I would love Panasonic to upgrade the LX100 with the sensor from the GH6 with 4k/60fps ability. a hybrid AF would not be miss but I am managing to work around the issues of my GH5
Hey panny pro users, could you clarify me, why panasonic packed extended v-gamut colorspace (v-log) into rec709 colorspace? You can check it in metadata. After that operation, v-log become typical profile as Standart/Natural etc with very specific curve, but rec709 has theoretical 9.97 stops of lights, that mean no matter what you choose: v-log, cined2/Standart (with contrast/saturation -5), you will get this 10 stops maximum. P.S. even sony/canon can choose rec709/bt2020 colorspace for their log profiles.
Remember a few years ago when it seemed a new camera from one or another of the big manufacturers was coming out every other month? Will we ever see that again?
Hi you two, great round up of the pros and cons of the Pana Lumix Stuff. Speaking of lenses: One thing I really don't understand: Why do Sigma and Panasonic L-Mount zooms don't zoom in the same direction. They made an alliance and didn't get the turn of the turn the zoom ring 😁... Apart from that and some other minor things that you metioned: Panasonic is on par with the big ones and quite underrated.
I really can't complain, I love my S5! And even less can I complain because I still use my Canon lenses with an adapter, I have not bought full frame lenses from Panasonic and I do not know if I will because I have a lot of money invested in Canon and in my country it is not so easy, sell buy and earn money. I love the focus peaking, all the exposure aids that the camera gives us, V-Log is fantastic, the quality of 4k or 6k with the Ninja V is exquisite! If they create a new camera, for example the S6, and it had the improvements that you say in the video, it would be the best thing in the world! Greetings from Uruguay
Having discussed the issue of incompatible lens based image stabilization with Panasonic their answer is that since a Micro Four Thirds standards body exists if Panasonic and Olympus got together to decide on a specification outside the body it would be an anti-trust violation. The only way such a standard will ever exist is if the non Panasonic and Olympus members get together and write the spec but these members show no inclination to do this.
Phase detect AF on the next GH camera - and if possible also on the GH6 with a firwmare update - would be a gamechanger. Unusable AF is almost the only complaint I have about the GH-cameras. I have GH3/4/5 and I looked so much forward to the GH6, but I am so dissapointet, that Panasonic did not make a much better AF system on it. So I seriously consider jumping to Sony if Panasonic is not doing something about the AF situation very soon....
I'd like to as well but I dont think it hapenning. The GH6 seems to be both the G9 and GH5's succesor

You'd hate if needed filming kids
@@SuperSuperka I take pictures of my kids. Not video.

Anamorphic with de-squeeze
V-Log with LUT display
RAW video output - Although I really wish Panasonic hadn't have left out 4K resolution RAW and ProRes in their latest GH6 firmware update.
Firmware updates even when a newer camera in the line up comes out. They even made the GH5 II so it could have updates that the GH5 couldn't get due to hardware limitations.
Video assist features like waveforms, zebras, IBIS, peaking, levels, monochrome live view, night view etc...
USB-C battery charging/power
Dual native and Dual ISO on Panasonic cameras that improved the video dynamic range.
IBIS display on screen so you can see how much the camera is shaking
Open gate full sensor recording with onscreen markers for different aspect ratios for cropping in later in editing.
Things I don't like:
GH6 photo dynamic range at lower ISOs isn't great, despite the higher megapixel count and high res modes being better than other MFT cameras out there.
I use my GH6 to take videos of landscapes, insects and plants and I find it doesn't always show peaking on the subject and I can't always tell if it is in focus or not
3:56 - There is a rumoured S5H, possibly a S5 sized body with S1H features.
The bad: AF
The good: everything else
At least that's my impression from all the reviews I've seen
Even the AF is not that bad, I never had any complaints owning 5 Lumix cameras. There is no perfect camera.
@@TuinleiBob Just because there isn't any perfect camera doesn't mean certain issues can't be solved. When every other brands has phase-AF, that is a really weak argument. Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 are practically perfect cameras without any compromises.

imagine Panasonic releasing a LiDar module that would give to all their cameras awesome autofocus. Imagine.
The G9 is hands down the best bang-for-the-buck camera out there if you want flexibility for video and photography.
@@aroundomaha totally agree I sold my G9 and have missed it every since might get another one

I'm writing this comment in hopes that Panasonic sees this for their research:
As an S1H and GH5s user who's been purely Panasonic since the DVX100b (with one exception when the Canon 7D came out), I've made a promise to myself that I will not invest in another mirrorless body that doesn't have PDAF or something AT LEAST as reliable and convenient to use.
Agreed - Olympus lenses on Panasonic bodies are great. Even without dual image stabilization.
Updated GX-8 please. Incredibly sophisticated camera.
Olympus Truepic
Pentax Prime
Panasonic Venus Engine
Leica Maestro
Fuji X-processor
Nikon Expeed
Sigma True
GoPro certainly in the Hero 8 (Socionext had a competition to win some), I'd assume the 9/10 too, maybe others...
An upgraded PL100-400 with a smooth zoom ring would be good too 👍
S1 user and I'm still happy with this camera, I'll upgrade when the next S series is released and L mount glass, I'm happy as well.
Future models I would be interested in -
G9II with the GH6 sensor.
LX100III with GH6 sensor and better weather sealing (to avoid sensor dust)
General areas for improvement
- AF speed. Eye AF, tracking.
- Dynamic range
- Dual IS with Olympus lenses.
I agree they should put the S1R sensor in a smaller and lighter body. I had one briefly. Too big and heavy. This is why lightly used S1Rs are selling for about half the new price. With its big EVF the G100 is fine for photo work. I like mine a lot.
Lol yup snatched one up. Heavy true. But stellar build and features. I use a BlackRapid to help the heft.
I currently shoot with the S1H / S5 but I agree with most of
Your points, I think we need a new S camera, imagine an S1H ii, or a G9 ii, even something like a S5H
That said, I don’t really their autofocus as a problem because for how I shoot especially between f5..6-f11 what I need in focus always is.
Yes, please. Fix the OIS/IBIS incompatibility!
That cut to Jordan holding pizza in the harsh-light labeled as "videographer" had me laughing.
I to wish C1 tether support was coming for the Panasonic's but it does not seam likely :-/

Which would make sense in therms of Pocket Portability but also Desirability if it is Premium as well !
You Guys Praise Panasonic for it’s Video & Workhorse abilities, but you moan about the AF all the time, How do you guys focus during the making of an episode, Focus Peaking, Zebras or else, what is your "Focus Workflow" while shooting like Jordan? Thank You Guys & Thank You Panasonic !
I have the LX100......where is the update you rave about ?
My G9 + Gh5ii combo is so BeastMode with 10-25mm f1.7
Anyway.
I love my S5. 12 bit proresRaw with Atomos is amazing. Also love the 96mp multi shot!
For me it's the fact that nothing seems to support the GH6 raw codec yet.
I like the G100 as a small travel camera with the 50-200mm PanaLeica lens - great combo.
trying to hold over for the 2nd Gen S-line cameras, even if they're thick headed and don't do phase detect I'm sure it will be 10x more advanced then the AF currently used. And i can work with that
Great topic and great discussion, I just couldn't figure it out if this is an advertisement for Panasonic or criticizing their systems
They should bring out a new cinema camera a sucesor to the EVA1. With their great lens lineup it would kick ass.
They could, but the EVA1 is pretty fantastic. I think an EVA2? would be rather incremental.
Yep, I really look forward to using the S cameras due to those ergonomics. Can't say that for some of the other mirrorless brands that I have owned...
I use following olympus lenses on the G9, mostly for photography: 17 mm 1.2, 25mm 1.8, 30mm Makro, 75mm 1.8, 12-40mm 2.8, 40-150mm 2.8.
Can't wait to see this "The Good and the bad" version of the fujifilm side. Any idea on when you'll be releasing that?
Never saw tow guys more informing and entertaining at the same time, awesome!
Hoping for g9 mk2
Panasonic LX100 M3 with a 12-60mm lens & f2.8 across the range. Please.
i only wish they bring back the GM series.
I think if they would roll out APS-C L mount cameras, Sigma has a wonderful collection of APSC lenses.
I would go out and buy a GH6 today, if… they implement in-body BRAW recording. That is all I want for 4/3 open gate anamorphic recording.
I'm still looking at the G9 for my next travel camera.
Great video boys. As always. You re the best. Panasonic Lumix cameras re the best as well. Proud owner of 12 (yes. twelve) Lumix cameras. Never looked back.
Guys! You are the best. I even look at camera stuff I would never buy just for the entertainment! Please continue!!!!
Love this video❤️, they are telling the truth about Panasonic🙊
My first semi professional camera has been the Lumix G7.
If shooting narrative shorts were the only need - as a solo shooter.
What camera would you recommend? Key features I need:
Great autofocus
Good low light
10bit
Image stabilization
60p slow motion
Under $5K
Thanks
Panasonic, please update the GM series.
Any updates on Panasonic fixing the light leak issue? Thanks!
Hey Jordan, what are your top 3 favorite L-mount lenses for video on the S5/S1H?
Phase detect AF on the next GH camera - and if possible also on the GH6 with a firwmare update - would be a gamechanger. Unusable AF is almost the only complaint I have about the GH-cameras. I have GH3/4/5 and I looked so much forward to the GH6, but I am so dissapointet, that Panasonic did not make a much better AF system on it. So I seriously consider jumping to Sony if Panasonic is not doing something about the AF situation very soon....
