made this cover over the course of a few days. this one was a unique challenge for me; the notes themselves weren't that hard, but conveying the emotion of the piece was pretty difficult. i had to really, really examine the structure of the song (the chord progressions, the rhythm, etc.) to understand what exactly made the song work, and how i could convey those things in the most effective way. definitely a fun challenge; if people are interested, i could take pictures of my sheet music (with all my markings and notes on it) and share it here (EDIT: here it is imgur.com/a/A53uieB ) as for the song itself... i love les mis, and javert is probably one of my favorite characters in all of fiction. i won't get into why right now (cuz i could literally talk about him for hours), but... yeah. amazing character, with an unbelievably beautiful, tragic song like this. what's not to love? last note: i was actually planning on practicing this one a bit more and uploading a more polished version... but given that i literally practiced this song for 3 and a half hours straight last night, i felt like it was better to just upload this take than to keep working on it until i got sick of the piece. and also... for those of u who remember, back when i uploaded a cover of "the confrontation" from les mis, this piano (paran) played the part of javert. i was planning on recording on richard (the other piano) for a recording with a clearer, richer sound... but i think this fits better. javert and paran are both "old souls", and there's a genuineness to this recording (and paran as a whole) that i think fits well with the song.
this song is peak javert, a man at the height of his power, and at the height of his delusion that the world is black and white. in that sense, stars as a song is rigid on the surface. this is javert, the man who sees right and wrong as lawful and unlawful. but at the same time, the cracks are starting to show. javert is starting to move from the pursuit of the law to the pursuit of valjean no matter what. especially in the second half, javert gets emotional, which is something he really doesn't do outside of his worst moments. he's belting out a fiery sermon from on high. he will NEVER rest, not until he captures one man who broke parole once. and for a single moment, the facade of order slips into one of revenge, of madness. the character he has, of a man of duty, breaks for the first time that we see in the musical. a lot of versions of this one capture this moment where javert starts to slip with bombast, at the height of his story arc before his own fall from grace and into the river seine of madness. your cover's a lot quieter, a lot more subtle about it, but it's still there - the pitching tempo, the shifting dynamics, all come together to create a sense of rigidity, but the cracks are starting to show. javert is no longer what he was, because of 24601. great cover. javert is a funny guy.
