Actually, the Velaryons weren’t dragon riders in old Valyria. They moved to Driftmark, an island off Westeros, so they had easier access to trade between Westeros and Valyria before Valyria was destroyed. The Targaryen’s are the last dragon riders. The reason why Laena and Laenor can ride dragons is because their mother is Rhaenys Targaryen!
Another reason why they interbreed so much, they don’t want their children to lose the connection to the dragons.

I disagree that Emma’s Rhaenyra feels like a deferent character. Watching the episode, you can see the little mannerisms of Milly’s Rhaenyra carried to Emma’s. Especially in the court scene. Emma (and I believe the writers ofc) made me feel like she matured indeed, example when she is going upstairs to see the queen and acknowledges a noble talking to her even though she is in pain and tired, which contrasts a lot with young Rhaenyra that couldn't even thank properly the other lords (like in the scene when she chose Cole to use the white cloak) and didn't have much inclination to politics. Thank you for mentioning that Rhaenyra is causing a lot of her own problems. When she and Laenor got married, they agreed to produce heirs together. What happened to that plan? They have to know that her having children that are clearly not her husband's endangers her chance to become queen. And that is what she wants more than anything.
And what was up with her ordering Laenor not to go to war? She and Laenor live separate lives. He has his side piece and she has a shadow husband who is a shadow father to her children and she doesn't seem to care that everyone knows it except Viserys.
These are the actions of a balsy woman. Balsy women OWN their choices. So what's up with her becoming concerned with perception at this late date? Why is she ordering her husband to stay at her side to tamp down on rumors NOW?
Rhaenyra is smart and politically astute as she demonstrated in the Small Council meeting. She's tough as she demonstrated by taking her baby to the queen immediately after giving birth.
But having ALL her babies by a man other than her husband was a dumb move.

Emma took Rhaenyra on another level, that's Rhaenyra from the books, not whatever Milly was playing. Amazing performance. And they changed only those actors who played teen characters

How does Alicent’s children have white hair and Rhaenyra’s doesn’t? Maybe the King’s genetics 🧬 is stronger than his daughter’s, but I think the answer is the writing ✍️/plot.

Matt Smith was already old. He's the kings brother. Men and women look basically the same once they reach their 30s/40s. We are only looking at 10 years. Whereas the other characters are teenagers do you look like you did when you were 25 as when you were 15? Come on

The Olivia Cooke replacement is perfection. I also agree with Grace about Leanor. I knew nothing of John Macmillian but I thought he was great.
Rhaenyra’s replacement is the only one that stands out imo. At the same time it’s by far the most difficult to have gotten right. Other than maybe Daemon, Rhaenyra was the biggest standout of the first 5 episodes.

Re: the shots of mice/rats in Viserys’ study. They are too purposeful not to have meaning. In an interview, Paddie Considine himself described Viserys’ illness as a form of leprosy, which fits the on screen depiction of recurring skin lesions and wounds that do not heal, resulting in amputations. While rats are not a vector for leprosy, they are known, historically, to worsen the condition by gnawing on sufferer’s open wounds, which then go undetected because of the neuropathy associated with the disease. It’s a subtle bit of “bonus” storytelling for those familiar with the illness.
And there is precedent for leprosy afflicting royalty, in real world history. Baldwin IV of Jerusalem (who is depicted by Edward Norton in the film, Kingdom of Heaven) had it and was known as the Leper King.
