I don't get why Alicent thought the eggs of Ryaenyras children wouldn't hatch because even if the rumours were true they still had a Tagaryen as a parent? By her own logic her Ageon II egg shouldn't have hatched as she is not a Targaryen?

I think King Visery's obsession with his model is a perfect example of him being trapped in some idyllic past as opposed to living presently and tending to the issues happening in real time. The bigger the model of Old Valyria gets, the greater his failure as a King adds up.
Also Larys is just an ambitious psychopath. IIRC despite his disfigurement his Father didn't treat him poorly like Tywin did to Tyrion, and made sure his Son was able to utilize his strengths. By all accounts it doesn't seem like it was done out of some vindictive intent, but rather he views all lives as a commodity and used this opportunity to not only advance himself but to ensnare the Queen in his machinations.

Seeing Rhaenyra's father vs Otto is almost like a black and white difference. While the king wasn't a perfect man, I think he was overall a peaceful king who ultimately had faith in his daughter as heir. It is his faith in his daughter to fulfill the impossible that makes their relationship special, He know how difficult it was to place a female as heir to the throne. Yet, with Alicent, he forced her into the role. She was molded all along and it is no wonder that fear has been sewn into her actions. I think there is more at play with her downfall, but a lot of it stems from pressure. I recall the scenes where she would fidget with her hands profusely. And maybe Harwin knew that Jace wasn't his and loved him like a son anyway because he was a decent guy. Perhaps that is partially why he is so angrily pounding into Sir Criston because Criston is being so horrible to his own kid. @@youngveteran6368 I'm not overlooking that, I included it in my explanation. If you're getting into moral arguments Otto basically groomed his child and extorted her into a marriage with an adult who is essentially raping her because she is far too young to be giving consent for such sexual encounters with this much older adult. Alicent is also plotting to overthrow the legitimate heir to the throne and place her on child on it. Otto is her co-conspirstor. That's plainly treason and she should be executed right now. So allowing a marriage between her daughter and Rhaenyra's child, lending some credibility to his legitimacy, is a decent compromise to cover up her own treasonous actions.

I believe that Rhaenyras first son is actually Ser Criston Coles son from their one night together. She was presented with essentially a plan B tea and we never see if she uses it. Additionally the older sons hair is more similar to coles while the younger son has a curlier head of hair like Harwin Strong. Think they are meant to look similar because the fathers have similar features but it will be used in the future to help ease the bitterness Cole showed in this episode and with them killing off Strong so quickly, leaves that "this is your real father" scene especially after he asked about being a bastard. They'll probably wait for his step pops to die and then Rhaneyra will let Cristen know then.

As pointed out with Larys's connection to his own family, I really wish they would have given far more time to get to this point. The end of the last episode really would have worked well as the end of season 1. This would have given a bit more time to develop the friendship between Alicent and Rhaenyra and create more pathos for their break. Given a bit more time to fill in some of the gaps that seem so apparent. It also feels criminal to have not given Milly Alcock a full season with this character and helped smooth over the large time gap in the story. The showrunners certainly would have had more time to lay the foundation for these characters and interactions and it is a pity they chose not to. I certainly believe this will hurt the show more than help it by rushing thru to get everything into this first season.

Alicent do actually think her children would die if she didn't act like a Karen just like her father told her that's why she's in constant worry and hatred towards R + she knows that R children are bastards she'll never give her child to a basterd she has principals..
+And nobody really do the right thing in this series lol
