My family will love Grapes forever. We live in Toronto and traveled to Boston a few years back to see the Bruins vs Leafs. When we got back to Pearson Airport, Don was coming back from the outdoor game in Washington and spotted my big, loud Bruins jacket. He made his way over to comment on the jacket, talked to my boys about their hockey careers and took some photos. He didn't have to take the time but the boys still remember the day.

Even though I'm an anti-war, liberal guy, I can still appreciate Grapes' support for the troops (especially fallen ones) and his usually positive message to kids about how to play the game safely. That I respect. He has his political opinions and that's fine. I appreciate your opinion here, but I also would argue that Don is right when he says the game was safer because of "goons" in the 80s and 90s for the star players. Why is Sidney Crosby fighting his own battles and getting concussions all the time? Would that happen if Marty McSorley was on the ice with him? Would anyone dare to touch Sid? Obviously I could do without all the bench-clearing brawls, but if Sid is any indication, the league is woefully incapable of protecting its stars, and we have precedent to suggest there is another way that is more effective. Sid signed up to score goals and set up plays and maybe take the odd clean hit, NOT to get concussed, sometimes on purpose. I applaud Grapes for defending star players, even if he's from the old school.

you cant protect anyone in a league where you have knives on your feet. player safety is basically a sham, and you need a guy to fight star players battles so that they dont become a crosby.

I wish the states had someone like Cherry, he grows the game just because people like him and they like hockey from him and so hockey being bigger in the states is what I would love to see. Also if I was Cherry I wouldn't care what other people think, he is an 82 year-old man and STILL on television like so many people try to get on tv for short periods of time and he has been on for so long that whole generations have watched him and more are coming now! So as an American my opinion does not really matter but that is what I have formed off what I have seen from Cherry.

    • @pulparty6282
      @pulparty6282 7 лет назад

The bloggers intentions weren't to tell don cherry what he was doing wrong. It was to question his employers for allowing him to "get away with" what he said. Don cherry probably isn't the most avid blog reader, let alone doesn't know how to use a computer at 82 years of age. The article was put up to damage his reputation, and cherry probably won't even get a chance to defend himself even if he somehow finds the article.
That is why I say he can't defend himself.

Totally agree on your synopsis of the Legend that is Don Cherry. Being a hockey fan in the UK I can safely say without prejudice that DON & RON are true LEGENDS.
The author of the piece your discussing is missing the point of what Don brings to the table. Like an eccentric uncle sitting in the corner during a party, Don has the vocabulary and mannerisms to:
    1 Sparks debate
    2 Engage a reaction
3 Says what we ,(no matter where you are from, what is your up bringing, education or team you devoutly follow ) would love to have the courage, conviction and platform to say.

i like how the author admits he doesn't watch Coach's Corner, yet goes off on decades old Don Cherry stereotypes without looking into which ones are actually applicable to him. also, in terms of Cherry's mispronunciations my favourite was always Arturs Irbe as Artis Arubee.

I have been a fan of Don Cherry since he coached the Bruins [with help from Blue ] in the 1970's. I understand that he does not fit in todays culture , but to me he will always be a link to my childhood in Boston. I take what he says with a grain of salt ,realizing that he has reached the age of DGAF, but that is part of his appeal. I really enjoyed the interview with Andy Brickley when he was in town for the 78-79 Bruins being honored. This writer is trying to make himself relevant at the cost of attacking a hockey icon. Thank you Don [and Blue] for all the memories.

Cherry is pretty unhinged for the most part, and I think most viewers realize that. I think most viewers can look at Cherry slagging Romanuk and realize it's pretty ridiculous but not that big of a deal. It's silly, maybe petty, but I don't think Romanuk would feel "bullied" by an 82 year old man.
If it keeps happening, it's an issue. So maybe Campbell should wait until then to write an article about it.
That said, Campbell should have the freedom to write whatever he wants. Sports media should be criticized just like players, coaches, reffing, or the league itself.
And we have the right to criticize Campbell's piece (like this video). Personally I think Campbell should criticize Cherry but asking for censorship is too far. If you want to build a better product, tweaking Coaches Corner content is a perfectly fine request. Asking for Cherry's removal isn't, IMO.

Much better and tougher league today than 1970s 1980s! 90% of the NHL players from Canada only in 1980s! It was AA minor league league! 90% of the world hockey fans are not in Canada and USA! The hockey world championship is 10-15 times bigger!

Finland had 2,4 million tv watchers in 2019 1995 2022 world finals! I started watching in the 80s on my huge C dish in Illinois (hockey broadcasts on CBC were so superior to anything here in the US) and Coach's Corner was a part of that excellance. Thanks to RUclips I still get to watch him every week! It's amazing that this anal cavity of a writer is committing a worse sin and doesn't realize it. Here's the important point to me.....Don Cherry looks in camera and tells everyone EXACTLY what he thinks. How great, and how RARE is that?
