In my mind, whoever complained about this family's rink... and the counsellors and the judges, who ruled against the rink, are all extremely short-sighted. Having this rink, in the back yard, is actually a good thing. While the kids are playing on it or practicing, it creates an atmosphere wherein criminals are less likely to be skulking around in the dark, trying to steal items out of people's yards. The neighbours should actually be thankful that the rink is there. Also, it adds Canadian atmosphere to the neighbourhood. I am almost 70 and was born in Canada, however, I am not a hockey fan, but that said; I love that this family has a passion for this sport.... and I would love it if I had a neighbour, like them, who put a hockey rink in their yard... hockey promotes good healthy activity for the body and wholesome sportsmanship for the mind.
I had a similar problem with the city of markham regarding a tree that was too big and most of the branches where over my neighbors house. I was afraid of stormy weather bringing the tree down and damaging not just my house by my neighbours house. The inspect came and told me that he would not give permission to cut the tree. I went postal on him regarding the hypocrisy of the city trying to be green them building condos everywhere. He ended up giving me the permit. I was so mad. If you want freedom ,live out in the country , cant even have a few chicken here in town.
His lawyer will have to provide a 'Cease and Desist' letter. The owner should also request a Public Information meeting, where himself, his neighbors, the City and Councillors meet, to discuss what the issues are with this rink. There is most likely one or more neighbors, who are pulling the strings with this. David should knock on a few doors, behind this house, next to this house.
