110m Hurdles Setup Fail

- At the 2011 Region IV track meet in Anchorage, AK, a terrible mistake was made when the officials setup before the Boys 110m finals. The 6th hurdle was placed on a Girls 100m hurdle mark, putting it several meters closer than it should have been. As a result of this failure, four kids fell during the race. One had to be taken to the hospital and others ran poorly through the rest of the meet. I hope that officiating crews would pay closer attention to the hurdles setup to help prevent this from happening again.
The distance between the hurdles is deferent for boys and girls. The distance between the hurdles for girls is 8.5 m (27 ft 11 in), while the distance between the hurdles for boys is 9.14 m (30 ft). So, as shown in the video (sorry for the lack of explanation) one hurdle for the boys race was placed on the mark for a girls race.
Basically, the 6th hurdle was almost 3 yards closer than it should have been.
@quebecking8177 It's Eric:" explain deferent"........lol!!!
This kills me!!!! Im the black kid in lane one! Three years later I was the state record holder my senior year, I'm now a junior division one hurdler. This was my first season in high school. oh what time can do!!!
I bet you wrote that wrong.
+Taj Showalter Good for you, dude!
+Taj Showalter Goodjob! You cleared all the hurdles very well.
+Taj Showalter i do hurdles but i kind of suck at them oh well atlas i know the difference between girls and boys hurdles
+Taj Showalter IT IS YOU!!! I KNEW IT LOL
I'd be so pissed. It's almost as bad as the time that in one of my duel meets they miss-placed the 300 meter hurdles. Every single runner ran such a bad time. No one fell, but it's a lot different with the 110's.
I don't know what video you were watching, he was 3 stepping. What's impressive is how quickly he could react and switch lead legs, then continue to three step with the wrong lead leg for a few more hurdles before switching back.
look at the kid in the yellow in lane 8 I bet you he broke his arm.
I didn't look broken because both upper and lower seem straight enough as he crosses the line but he might just have dislocated his shoulder.
@@rayjennings3637 My guess is he was the one who had to go to the hospital.
Sue them
Oh that elbow was toast, one of his legs too from the looks of it (if it wasn't an internal gut thing).
He kept trucking though! Strong spirit.
3rd lane in purple was limping a bit towards the finish
I tripped over a hurdle once on this track, back in 1977. Ripped the skin off my shoulder. And that hurdle wasn't even misplaced.
i was too busy watching the guy in red fall in slow motion
There were in fact two lines of hurdles placed on girl's markers 6th and 7th.
4 died 1 is missing
when 2 step drills become useful !!!
Sir, Awesome camera. Brilliant , I love your Camera work. Let me know the name of Video camera/ Camera. Thanks
I was completely enamored with the beautiful forest in the background. Of course, it's Alaska. I really want to get myself there.
the same thing happened to me at indoor districts this past season, the last hurdle was at the girls mark, and the officials didnt notice until i pointed it out to them on film!
How do you zoom in like that with such an average camera??
imagine old you seeing the Samsung 100x zoom
@@jomonger-g1f Haha, thanks from the past!
Only had one bad set up where they actually forgot a whole line of hurdles on the 300m... I told them right before we started though.. then another time they forgot to put a hurdle on one of the spots in my lane but I also caught that and told them... I might as well tell them because then they would most likely just not even count my time or something.
the zoom on this camera is incredible
i had a fear of hurdles once ...... but i got over it
I know you commented 5 years ago but I have to applaud you... Somehow I laughed
i'm dying, as a beginning hurdler who just recently got their steps down, I would be so frustrated
Nice one ! The big guy in red/white (lane 6 ?) was so slow, and already "out" by half a stride at the hurdle before, that he was almost unaffected by it - he just "took it in his stride" !
KAF128 everyone was slow there are 12 year olds that run faster than them lol
this almost happened at one of my races... I was so glad I did a practice run through the first 2 hurdles...
The terrible part is that... there had to have been someone in the stands who noticed this and said nothing!!! i could never be that type of person. omg.
No one noticed this from the stands? Or the officials? Or the runners? I'd walk past the course once before a race if I were a runner
what an athlete!!!! I ran a 17.1 as a freshman with little teaching and am sophomore now getting ready for this season
jesus 17.1 as a freshman in 110 hurdles what steroids you on bruh
Fam I said this 2 years ago
i know but like i'm curious
JLorenz that's slow as shit bro your probably not a scholarship athlete was it your first time doing it?....in my freshman year I opened with 14 seconds
Rickyticky bobbiwobins That is complete bull shit
My friend once kicked a hurdle out of place during the JV race and then our Var runner came in and stumbled on that misplaced hurdle.
I'm still confused...
is it less distance between hurdles for girls than boys?
I would guess to accommodate longer strides in males than females?
so, here,
was that particular set of hurdles randomly placed to near the previous set?
and was the subsequent set then farther?
The girls hurdles are closer together than boys hurdles so all of the hurdles here were on the correct marks except for the ones they fell on.
Yes. Men's hurdles are spaced 30 ft apart. Women's hurdles are spaced 27 ft, 11 in apart. You can see one of the runners become extremely confused when the hurdle is already there even though his lead foot wasn't in position to jump.
Respect to the guys for finishing.
Props to those kids that kept going. Part of the hurdles is being able to recover if you hit one.
this is real real race to test how to adapt in any circumstances
Watch carefully and u will see first place push down a hurdle
It doesn't matter. There is no disqualification for touching hurdles with any body part.
Only if it's intentional
The hurdle was too close anyway, it messed up his steps. If he wouldn’t have pushed it he would have fallen like the others did.
Gavin Wightman u can be disqualified for touching it with your hands but I guess not in this case since they were off their marks
Actually you can be dqed for touching the hurdle with your hands to push it down and or if its intentional but because this race was screwed up the whole race would basically be thrown out the window because its not at race standards so they should have had to run this race again and this is when everyone no matter what school just gangs up on the officials and beats the crap out of them
the camera that took the video is not the same camera that took the stills they zoomed in on, the angle and depth of field is different on the stills, also a slightly different angle, my guess is a Dslr with probably a 70-200 or 100-400 took the photos
it's like a war out there.
Hey I was in this race. My name is Tyler Rohde I was the kid middle. (Columbia blue) and let me tell u, it was so unexpected and so awkward that yes kids were seriously hurt.
The end killed me because they tried being serious and acting like it meant the world just because the hurdles were misplaced
Yeah some people do count their steps, but usually when you are that good at hurdling, which these guys are to make it to the regional, muscle memory usually takes over. I remember in Jr. high, they forgot to change the hurdle height for the 200M hurdles from the 110 meter hurdles... that was an interesting race...
plus when your that far into the race the hurdles between guys and girls are far apart so it looks like theres a hurdle right in the middle of a set of guys
happend to me before too, officials set it up wrong and my shoulder will never be the same. why are all track officials 100 years old
well, thats not what happened. they got off track on where the hurdles are set up and between two sets of hurdles the distance was much less and threw off the runner's strides.
These comments make me want to end it all. Everyone acting like just because they were placed wrong doesn't mean they shouldn't have fallen. Also, all the people saying how bad they are and how they need more practice. I bet half the people saying they suck don't even run hurdles.
The guy in the third lane from the left knocked into each of the first five hurdles yet he was the only one who cleared the sixth without hitting it.
The JazzieNerd bc its fine if your knee hits it bc you should be so low that your knee hits it
The JazzieNerd the guy in lane 1 also cleared the 6th
who were the schools i cant tell
I would be pissed. I remembered that we used to time and even count our steps in practice and before our race. That 10m difference can completely throw off a hurdler's rhythm. The ones who made it threw were probably lucky enough to land on the foot they usually jump off of.
Parabéns aos atletas, que mesmo com essa trapalhada conseguiram completar a prova!
does first guy win? how much time is marked off for hittng it down?
They are not proper race hurdles either; race hurdles should have adjustable weights on the bottom which are changed according to hurdle height, and also do not have a cross bar across the end of the feet. Credit to the guys who managed to keep hurdling pretty well, all things considered!
Wait, I don't know much about the hurdles could somebody please explain how they are poorly placed ? Are they to close or something ? thanks .
someone explain to me what happened? i dont get the whole "mark" thing
iT HAPPENED AT THE FHSAA 2a STATE MEET IN JACKSONVILLE THIS PAST SPRING AND THE OFFICIALS MISTAKENLY DECIDED TO RE-RUN THE RACE.
I cant believe this thats exactly what happened to me at the race b4 districts my 6th grade year it was the last hurdle and i hit it and i went skidding and my chin, stomach, forearms, and the front of my legs were all cut up and skinned.
Yea, he was the state record holder until last year.
One went to the hospital, eh? Is that why they all got up immediately and still finished anyway?
@latrelljones69 yep, at the end of the meet. but one runner had to go to the hospital and two others ran poorly
I used a movie editing program called Pinnacle Studio 14
Excellent video. Now that I know why the young men had so much trouble, isn't even a little amusing.
For some reason I died when the kid in lane 3 skidded out 😂😂😂😂😂 on the real though, great work!
Think the yellow shirt guy hurt his arm or shoulder on that fall.
the guy who wears a red top and white sleeves reacts awesomely!
you don't really count your steps in the 100/110m hurdle race. It's always three steps.
Both the worst and best 110m Hurdle race of all time.
i would be freaking out, cussing at all the officials at the top of my lungs right as i finished the race.
Where is the mark
@MSh4kes have you heard of penalties?
the guy with the blue and yellow shirt FTW! rrolled on the floor, banged on the hurdle and gets back up running like he was bit by a snake on the leg xD!
@GetOffMahBalls Doesn't really matter what race you are in the hurdles.
Concise and clear explanation to the video. Thx
surprised to see they're not running with snow shoes.
I still wonder how he could manage to finish...
He was five stepping instead of the faster three. Being much easier then to do a girls hurdle length and why he didn't knock one down.
He switched legs? He never switched lead legs.
he wasnt even phased a little haha thats true talent
Absolute unprofessionalism on the part of whoever set it up. Do they have to spell out boys and girls on the grid?
brilliant camera work!!
That would be 3feet aka 1yard; not 3yards which would be 9feet.
Damn, lane two should have been able to clear that girls hurdle rocking that flowing blond ponytail.
Guys run a 110m, girls run a 100m. The sixth hurdle was at the girls marker instead of guys, so it was closer than it should have been.
Please can you explain to me more?
Hurdle randomizer should be a thing
Thats because he used to hurdle of them so high he never hit them. sacrificed speed for safety.
and you run what..?
it’s finna turn into bartlett university real quick
Ok who's the freshman that set up the hurdles??
Can you really adapt 2 steps from your fastest pace in a hurdles race?
And trust me when u do 3 step 3 step 3 step 2 step holy crap that hurdle was close u know immediately something is wrong
are these people serious no 1 didn't notice this gosh .
I get a kick out of the guy who says "OH MAN!" at :25
Autumn Ballard me too. Hilarious 😂
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL ! thats never happened to me on a hurdle in competitions !
Hurdle Crew FIRED.
Whether set that up should have gone to jail
Hahaha Im the black kid, that didnt fall. Im actually kinda good. 2012 State runner up 14.9 in alaska (hard to do, we only have a 3 month season speaking we have snow untill april) and My friend Tyler In the Columbia blue is the state record holder 14.61 now. So my friend get that out of here. Get us lower 48 all year, indoor and outdoor training and we'd demolish the hurdles.... Even more. Mr. 8th grade champion.
I thought something was up when the kid in lane 7 two stepped lol
You know why? Someone told him pretend the cops are on you
Lmfaooooo hey, we have all been there. My 300 in 2006 was an epic fail lmao
No they just didn't jump on time.
this isn't even a track meet they knocked down most of the hurdles it's who can knockdown the most hurdles.
or the guy grabbing his shoulder in pain...
HE PUSHED THE HURDLE WHAT NO
anyone else notice that the black kid was the only one who didnt hit the poorly placed hurdle?
then it would hurt like hell if you don't make it
BRUTAL!!!!
haha you can see the guy with the red who bites the dust. He's saying, "Oh fuuuuuu" lmao!
anyone notice the kid in lane 3 do a crazy shit flip into the second to last hurdle.
holy hell. who ever the camera man or woman kick ass!
