    Olympic champion Dayron Robles is disqualified after passing the line in first spot. The Cuban was DQ'd for obstructing Liu Xiang in the latter stages of the race when the Chinese athlete looked set for gold. Great Britain's Andy Turner benefited as he was upgraded from fourth to bronze.

    I watched it again and again, and noticed something else: in the early part of the race, Robles ran with his fist clenched, but soon as Liu Xiang starts to go ahead of him, he unfurls his fingers and grabs at Liu.

      I don't know if you've ever hurdled, but this happens all the time by accident. His arms were already going wide by the 6th hurdle because of fatigue, he wasn't in great shape that season. Then he went over the hurdle unbalanced, and shifted to the right of his lane. And then the contact happened from there. Change in arm position is obvious, but not by intent. Contrary to what you may believe, world class hurdlers aren't all great technicians. Robles usually is, but his technique was already failing him by the 6th or 7th hurdle.

He tried to use his hand to get Xiang's hand 3 times (look at the video in the slow motion). The first time, his hand spread out, trying to get Xiang's hand (see the video). He missed it. He moved his body closer to Xiang's lane, and tried to get his (Xiang's) hand. His second try - He got it, and he pushed Xiang back. The third time, you can see he pushed Xiang on purpose. It worked! Xiang hit the hurdle, and he (Robles) finished first. Covered his body with his national flag. He was proud of it - a proud hero!

    Just learnt about this cheating scandal from watching a different video that talked about it. It was so obvious just looking at the slow-mo. Starting at 4:28, you can see that Xiang and Robles had some distance. Then by 4:39, Robles seems to be trying to discreetly reach out to Xiang. Then 4:41 his hand movement became clear that he's attempting to "grab" which is really peculiar to do. Then 4:44 he finally was able to grab him. It was clearly intentional and I'm glad he got disqualified, but it robbed Xiang the chance to get gold. That's the worst part of this fiasco.

      You can even see him looking not especially excited when he's asked to pose for photos.
      Things like this sometimes happen, especially with hurdles, where athletes are basically wirewalking every few steps. Sometimes, you have to adjust to stay in your line right as someone else is adjusting towards you and you collide.
      Disqualification is usually the result, as it was here, and while I understand the impulse to villify and blame, especially out of sympathy for poor Xiang, I think a lot of the criticism is overblown and unfair.

    Lets not make excuses for Robles. It WAS on purpose, you can see he runs on the inside of his lane in the race(our right closer to Oliver) the whole race. Towards the end when Xiang starts catching him, that's when he reaches out to obstruct Xiang with his hand. It starts at 4:42. At first it is his form, closed at the approach and open at the clearance BUT around 4:42 he fully opens his fist AND reaches out. When it doesn't immediately affect Xiang, he reaches out again, this time clearly grabbing Xiang. Yes in hurdle races there can be minimal contact, I am a hurdler myself and have experienced this, ESP when fatigue sets in during the latter half of the race, but Robles reached out toward Xiang and that's what warranted the DQ. This was on purpose, no excuses.

Even with a slightly wide lane, It still would not prevent scumbag Robles using such dirty tactics reaching out and grabbing or obstructing with his long arms with him running close to the neighbor athlete in the next lane!
      It is utterly disgusting to see Robles coming to Liu Xiang pretending to console and sympathize with Liu for losing to him in the race immediately after the race before the DQ was announced. What a hypocrite and loser! It's the race we lost forever to see Liu Xiang most likely to have set a new world record.

    • @biglilrichard
      @biglilrichard 6 лет назад

      Liu Xiang would not have come close to the world record. it would've been a 13.05 at best. Robles didn't do it intentionally. His arms are going wide long before he grabbed Liu, and when he went over the eighth(?) hurdle he lost his balance over the hurdle, causing him to go to the right of his lane. No athlete would intentionally do something like that in a final, they know 100% they'll be dq'ed if they try it, like Robles was here. This is why when there is inadvertent contact in a hurdles race that affects the medal positions, they should be awarded based on trajectory of the whole race, not final placing.
    It was clear Liu Xiang would’ve finished first or at worst second behind Robles. Robles committed a mistake so he should be DQed and Liu should get the gold. In no world does Richardson deserve the Gold here.
    Same goes for the past World Championships. Orlando Ortega was quite clearly going to finish second if it wasn’t for McLeod’s antics. He was honestly done dirty having been awarded the “honorary bronze.” Yes, keep the other medalists but at least give him the silver..

    Robles was rightly disqualified in this race. Xiang himself later said that “Robles hit me twice, at the ninth hurdle he pulled at me, but it wasn’t intentional, I am good friends with Robles.”
    This stuff happens all the time in hurdles. Form often breaks down in the later stages of the race. Robles already had his medal taken away, but it’s sad to see all the shame that he still gets to this day for something that Xiang himself doesn’t believe to be intentional.

    • @Elliottklassen
      @Elliottklassen 2 года назад +1

      @@curated_euphoria_experience Yes, I am. In a 100m sprint, even the most well trained professionals are only able to hold their top speed for a couple seconds at the very most, because muscle fatigue comes into play extremely quickly at high intensity. No amount of training can change that fact. The 110mH builds fatigue significantly faster than a 100m sprint: I know that as a university 110m hurdler myself. The large amount of fatigue in a high hurdles race is why we see a bigger discrepancy between proficiency over 60mH and 110mH than we do over the flat 60m and 100m sprints. We even have some 60mH specialists who don’t even often run 110mH (athletes like Jared Eaton). I think the fact that Xiang himself doesn’t believe that the contact was intentional is indicative of how normal it is for contact to occur in hurdle races (essentially every single race will have some amount of contact between at least two athletes).

    • @Lunaskylette

    Watching the slo mo, you can see that Dayron is swinging his left arm into the lane to his left. He is so far ahead that it does not interfere with that runner. He is jumping close to the left hand support post of the hurdles.
    Dayron hits hurdle #8 and seems to lose balance, then overcompensates and swerves to the right, so much that at hurdle #10, his right foot is over the hurdle in the other lane.
    At first I also thought he intentionally opened his hand to grab the Chinese runner, but watching it a few more times it looks like he was so unbalanced that he was struggling to keep balance. A few people mentioned that he hit the runner with a watch, but if you look when they're at the Set mark, it's just a bracelet, not a heavy, hard watch.
    I also believe that Xiang was pulling ahead and could/should have won, but after watching multiple times it looks like Daron was flailing his arm to regain his balance after hitting hurdle #8.
