"They have passed doping tests conducted by authorized Olympic officials" I'd laugh at this naivete but it's really not funny. I'm going to sincerely attempt to fill your gaps of knowledge. There is essentially no feasible way to ensure that PEDs are kept out of athletics. That goes for steroids, as well as all the other chemicals. Steroids are just one category of many such substances, most of which you and I don't even know the names. The olympic tests are a joke. It's all for show. There's billions of dollars at stake. Do you think the IOC is going to throw all of that away, is going to burn its own wallet, by intentionally turning the Olympics into a series of steroid scandals every single season? No. Are national governments going to discredit and embarrass themselves by busting their own athletes? No. They are not going to do those things. For the institutions that govern professional athletics, there are huge incentives to look the other way. Then, let's just take a look at professional athletics over the last 20 years. Football is full of steroids. Soccer is full of steroids. Boxing is full of steroids. Baseball and competitive bicycling are full of steroids. Even CURLING has top competitors getting caught using PEDs. Why is this the case? Because the drugs WORK. They don't "help a little bit." They make a massive difference. Even if you dedicate your entire life to a sport, you will unlikely be anything better than an average professional, at best, without drug use. So, for the athletes, there is a huge incentive to take the risk. At top level athletics, there is an unspoken understanding: if you want to win, you have to compete. You have to use every means at your disposal to win, and that definitely includes drugs. no matter what, he will always be a hero for China and the world of sports! inspiration to billions of people! btw the first athlete for a China Nation was also in athletics!
He also deserve apologies the Chinese media and people absolutely smashed him after that match in 2008. He was raised to the very top and hit rock bottom in one day. Everyone was criticized him even his own coach. He was been pictured as the face of the Chinese Olympic team a national sport hero. But track and field it’s an unforgiving sports injury ages ext. but we failed to understand him as he it’s just an other human being that will get hurt and effect his performance. China at the time wasn’t ready for Liu Xiang. As for now he it’s still one of the greatest Chinese athlete. And great sports ambassador. It’s great to see now the media and people are more focused on the athlete rather then the results. I can’t speak for all Chinese people. But for a kid that watched this match when I was 8 and went to school to trash on him. I am truly sorry
An Achilles injury can be a death sentence for a sprinter. Imagine rupturing the tendon that connects the heel of the foot to the rest of the legs and being asked to _push off_ that tendon at _full strength_ in order to get a jump start on a sprint event. Most of us feel the pain just thinking about it, and Liu actually had to do it.
I always loved to watch Lui compete in the hurdles. I felt so bad all the pressure he had for the 2008 Olympics and not being able to compete fully healthy. That had to take a tremendous toll on him.
Wow. I thought this was going to be a sad story. He was already an Olympic champion. Who cares if a person wins a championship at home or away? The fact remains that he won it.
I remember being in China in the summer of 2012 and he was EVERYWHERE. I think because olympics were going on he was so hyped up. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure this man carried
I agree with the difficulty when it comes to this sport. So many top hurdlers and champions still stumble over those hurdles. Allen Johnson's fall with his glasses falling off his face was actually funny to watch. I recall Gail Devers 1992 fall as well.
I am sorry for him. It was just so insane that many Chinese used to blame and defame him just for his withdrawal. He broke the mindset that the Asian race can not win a gold medal and brought lots of honor to our country. Too many people put tons of pressure on him and bully him on the internet by the name of "national dignity". You are a hero, always!
He already had it won, but that insane burst of acceleration that Liu has at 4:38 as he comes over the final hurdle is just awesome to watch. Even if somebody else had been even with him at that point, he would've won easily thanks to that final, mad dash for the finish line. It's almost cartoon-ish, because at full speed it almost looks like he's flailing his arms wildly in his last few strides. An iconic finish to cap an amazing race.

Oogie I went/go to school with multiple people who are 6’5+.
I’m 6’2 myself so I know they are much taller than me
He also deserve apologies the Chinese media and people absolutely smashed him after that match in 2008.
No, many chinese still see him as a hero today, we cheered for him. It isn't all that you said it was
Yue Ray true brother we all get disappointed. When things don’t go as we plan. Yes he is a hero.
He will forever be one of the greatest Chinese athletes ever and one of the greatest hurdlers ever regardless of what happened.
Well delivered! Thanks Liu, he is a real hero.
Really well made video, taking the creative decision to not follow chronological order but rather making a logical way to focus on his achievements.
I remember that gold medal race. So proud of Liu Xiang.
Just because of the way you told his story, I Was like GO LU GOOOOO.... And I'm from the USA...I love your Olympic channel
彼は、ほんとに素晴らしい選手ですね👐👏👐👏
He is the pioneer that says Asians can be part of the atheletic world. Thats a man making history.
He was my favourite hurdler. And that's coming from a Welsh guy who was lucky enough to watch Colin Jackson race.
Lucky you
I always loved to watch Lui compete in the hurdles. I felt so bad all the pressure he had for the 2008 Olympics and not being able to compete fully healthy. That had to take a tremendous toll on him.
I love the last words. He deserves thanks!
He was outstanding... Sadly injury can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime... We should be human about it...
Olympic champion once is great ! World champion and world record holder amazing career
Great athlete.
Respect from India.
Thanks, Liu Xiang for all you have done us proud.
He’s always our hero and true legend of the whole nation❤
He deserve thanks many thanks for whole Asian.
why asian not whole world?
Ah Kheang because he is Asian
and he is human lol
If a Black person made that same comment, then they would call him racist...lol
Just hope he live a happy life not bitter from injury failing before Beijing olympic. He is Asia Hero.
Im pretty sure he is currently coaching a new team of track athletes for world championships :)
I respect all the athletes but respect most the ones who break new ground.
He was also the first asian to win track and field gold at the Olympics. It was a treat to watch a fellow Asian's victory.
Wow. I thought this was going to be a sad story. He was already an Olympic champion. Who cares if a person wins a championship at home or away? The fact remains that he won it.
Superb narrator ... absolutely wicked doco
I remember being in China in the summer of 2012 and he was EVERYWHERE. I think because olympics were going on he was so hyped up. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure this man carried
Jeanne Lin you mean 2008?
He is greatest athlete!!🇨🇳
from.Japan🇯🇵
Liu deserves thanks and respect from every single person in China, in Asia, in the world.
Liu xiang is my hero forever.
That's definitely one of the most important golden medals for China. Asians typically don't do well in these events. He's a huge inspiration.
Thanks from India also to liu...fr his bestness
I'll never forget his win.
I agree with the difficulty when it comes to this sport. So many top hurdlers and champions still stumble over those hurdles. Allen Johnson's fall with his glasses falling off his face was actually funny to watch. I recall Gail Devers 1992 fall as well.
He deserve A BIG THANKS🏅👍
I am sorry for him. It was just so insane that many Chinese used to blame and defame him just for his withdrawal. He broke the mindset that the Asian race can not win a gold medal and brought lots of honor to our country. Too many people put tons of pressure on him and bully him on the internet by the name of "national dignity". You are a hero, always!
日本人から見てもアジアの誇りです。
He already had it won, but that insane burst of acceleration that Liu has at 4:38 as he comes over the final hurdle is just awesome to watch. Even if somebody else had been even with him at that point, he would've won easily thanks to that final, mad dash for the finish line. It's almost cartoon-ish, because at full speed it almost looks like he's flailing his arms wildly in his last few strides. An iconic finish to cap an amazing race.
4:22 the eyes of Bruce Lee...
Yeas😂
刘翔是一位值得尊重的中国运动员,刘翔参加了48次国内外大赛,36次冠军,6次亚军,3次季军,然而有些人却只记得他退赛2次!
Liu Xiang is a Chinese athlete worthy of respect.
Liu Xiang participated in 48 competitions in and out of China,
36 championships, 6 runner-ups and 3 third runners.
However, some people only remember that he retired twice!
Peoples always remember the bad.fogort the good. Are they human?Liu xiang done his very best performances.
He’s so good I like him I hope his leg start working again
I remember seeing this.. before his final I looked up his previous races and gold medal win in Athens.. so I was rooting for him.. unfortunate that he couldn’t compete due to his injury.. chin up Liu, u did ur country proud!
