I love Vario. It's because of their 1918 Trench/Medic Watch that I first learned that World War I was the reason men switched from pocket to wrist watches. The 1918 Pilot looks great, but for someone who's left-handed and wears his watches on his right wrist, it won't really work for me. But I look forward to their next cool watch release.

Same, I love their Trench/Medic line on bund straps and I intend to buy one, along with this metal protective cap. I just haven't decided yet WHICH one, because they all look really nice😅 I'm thinking about one cased in bronze.
Also, even though I'm not that much into quartz watches, I really like their Versa double-faced take on JLC "Reverso", which has been relaunched recently. Their "Empire" collection is impressive as well, as I'm a fan of art deco. I just wish Versa was manufactured in a mechanical version, too, but I guess it would be then either unreasonably thick, or substantially more expensive (obviously).

I recently bought the Baltany homage of the Vacheron Constantin 1921 with the similar angled dial. Worn inside the left wrist the angle works perfectly at all times, it was quite a surprise. Thanks for reviewing this Vario 👍

Thanks for this information! When he mentioned "preacher's watch" the 1921 came up, so I immediately went to Aliexpress to search for a Chinese homage. Good to know the Baltany works well!

Hi Dave, I just visited Japan (off had to buy a couple seikos there) and while there I learned about this brand, Kuoe. They’re based in Kyoto and you can actually go to their office there and buy a watch. Would love an episode maybe checking this out if you haven’t already!

This dial layout calls to mind the Longines Avigation watch, or the Vaceron Constantine American 1921, both at considerably higher prices than the Vario. I do like the vintage asthetic that Vario is doing. I do like their trench style watches.

That Vario that you reviewed a couple of months ago, the light blue one was Fantastic , so is this one. They are both watches that I really like and could see myself buying.

I love these tilted dial watches! I bought the 1918 Pilot the day it came out and its one of my most worn watches. It has good build quality, isn't compromised in design (Longines Avigation A-7 and its horrific date window) and isn't the cost of a decent car (VC 1921). For similar watches, theres the Vostok 581 driving watch, which is a bit more wearable than the Vario, but its acrylic crystal and lack of water resistance compromise it. Theres also the Baltany 1921 homage, but I haven't had hands on experience with it.

As my prominent hand is my left this would not be a good watch on my right wrist. I wear watches on my right wrist exclusively. Thanks for all of your reviews. Your honesty is impeccable.

Weird but VERY nice. Hands and numerals remind me of the Zenith pilots watches of the 1930s. I have a very budget Tandorio with the same look dial and hands, equipped with a trusty NH35. Great review of a really nice piece.

I like the look of these, so it’s good to see a review by someone I know and trust. I’m not sure about the tilt, but like the more authentic strap bars. I’ve looked at original early 1900 watches every now and then as my grandfather was in the First World War as a soldier and then a steam engine driver, so a watch like something that he might have worn appeals. A bull nose pocket watch style (with the crown at 12 O’clock but without the tilt) or the crown at 3 would be interesting. That blue face is interesting over their regular black and medic specs. The price it a bit painful for me, not unreasonable, but quite affordable for me!

If you're using a vertical yoke (shaped like a squared-off Y), you wear it on the inside of your wrist.

Too bad the indice lume is so weak. I'm guessing the indices are stamped, limiting the amount of lume applied. About the strap, as you mention at the beginning smaller pocket watches were converted to wristwatches by brazing on fixed lugs. The screw 'rivets' Vario uses is legit, another method was the strap was stitched onto the watch. This method made sense, most military troops, especially back then, had to make their own repairs to clothing, boots etc., so attaching a strap wasn't very difficult. Keep in mind, officers and pilots had orderlies taking care of day-to-day necessities, they would be the ones caring for an officer's 'kit'.

I will spoil the “original” party 😂, but have a look at Longines Heritage Avigation Type A7. True aviation legacy there.
This is just one of the versions (current). They had many over the time, including one with the font used by Vario.

You should take a look at the Helm Miyako, it's satisfied all my pilot watch cravings.
With the crown, a leather strap, numerals and heft it feels more like a flieger than a dive watch. The rotating bezel makes it super useful when driving.
The blue one is my daily.

4:20 - in this case - please glue your hand to a steering wheel so you can read the time and the watch makes more sense
btw - when are you planning to sell your whole collection and buy 1 decent & "luxury" watch ?

Many non hacking movements can actually be hacked simply by when setting the time hold the crown so that the seconds hand will be pushed back in increments, much like on a Vostok 😊
