Guarding their young like that is standard procedure for elephants. They will also protect weaker or injured individuals like that as well. The one who came to assist was most likely the troop leader. (I can't tell for sure though because of the camera cuts.) Most elephant herds are females too as they're matriarchal, so it was probably the big momma coming out trying to get the rhino out of the mud.
Given the rarity and amount of persecution suffered by rhinos, I would have hoped that rangers would have ignored the 'let Nature take its course' directive and saved the rhino. Also, the water-hole looks man-made and is not natural.
They SHOULD be saving it not only bwcause of their endangered status, but also because it's a manmade issue that is killing this rhino in the first place.
Agreed. With the utter persecution and illegal poaching of rhinos I can't believe the rangers didn't intervene. I'm sure the lion pride would have eventually had some gazelle kills soon. Very disappointed with the lack of interaction by those watching. SAD. !!!

Reading through these comments, it's heartening to see so many people acknowledging the incredible compassion and empathy these majestic elephants displayed. Nature, with all its beauty and cruelty, never fails to remind us of the interconnectedness of life. The way these elephants rallied around their fellow beings, be it their young ones or a struggling rhino, reflects a level of empathy that resonates with the best of human qualities. Let's strive to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures and learn from their lessons in kindness and solidarity. 🐘💚 #NatureTeachesCompassion
Nature teaches compassion? What? That is a good way to lead someone to their death. Nature is brutal because it is complexity happening at every moment. It's fine to humanize an instance and call it sweet, but there is a reason the human species developed tools, defenses, societies, and amenities. Nature is literally brutal, raw existence and it doesn't teach kindness. It hardens dwellers and they either survive by becoming intelligent to nature's brutality or they become a tiny speck of darwinism that happened in the great procession of existence marching on. Let's not confuse people and make them think Nature is just waiting for them with a big warm hug. Nature is not kind. Nature is Nature.
So elephants are the gentle giant that can wreak he havoc. The word of God teaches that the creation including the animals are a testimony to the strength to God to the desire of God to the love of God consider that God can smash each and every one of us for being rebellious and disobeying yet God so ever loved the world that God sent Jesus Christ to show the way of Love forgiveness and salvation how amazing is God how powerful is God how good?? Turn to Jesus!!
That poor elephant has to live with that for the rest of his life. They never forget. Hope he can help the next time even better. Elephants are truly amazing creatures 🐘
Her. That's a female, possibly the matriarch of that group. Herds like that don't have adult males, only juvenile males. When they become adults or near adults, they are encouraged to go solo, though sometimes you'll see very small groups of bachelors join up for a while, but this group has juveniles, so big tusks = adult of fair age, so probably the matriarch.
That elephant is not a human. In fact animals are not humans. They are smart for sure but they don't remember like the way you describe. Animals Associate things or situations. And have instincts. So this elephant moved on and will never think of that rhino again and how it didn't save it.

These man made watering holes really need to be designed better. I've seen at least 2 animals get stuck in them and be unable to get out. Thus rhino's situation is particularly bad because there's no way any animal is going to be able to grab its corpse and drag it out, leaving it to rot and pollute a common water source for a lot of animals.

I love them soo much aye 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🦣😊
I’m a big cat fan by far, but I also appreciate the beauty of other animals. The elephant really tried its hardest. I think the rhino was tried so it was able to use its strength to pull itself out with the help of the elephant. Once the elephant realized it couldn’t help it let the circle of life happened. Maybe the rhino was old, maybe the lions hadn’t eaten in days. Overall great video, we should never take mother nature for granted ❤
What better proof is there than this to show animals have empathy, and that elephants are perceptible creatures. It knew, ACROSS SPECIES, that another animal was struggling and in danger. And for what? Nothing in return! ❤
It was beautiful to watch as the elephants walked up in their pack that they kept all the babies on the inside of their circle to protect their babies above all else. And instead of several of the adult elephants, going over there to help most stay back to protect their babies. It’s also sad to see the rhino is stuck in what looks like something man-made. So it leaves me to wonder if that man-made edging wasn’t there with the rhino had a better chance of getting out to save itself. It’s one of those it’s good that humans are there to help the animals at the same time by thembeing present and doing things, does it also hurt the environment and make it harder for the animals at times
Yea, I like their commercials on saving elephants, rhinos and others, but sit there and talk about nature taking its course. If it's a rare animal or is in trouble you just sit there and let it suffer? I have seen many rescues of whales, horses, and many others...any decent person would do so out of compassion. But animal rights frauds are POS. THEY PREY ON PEOPLES COMPASSION FOR MONEY. THEY CARE NOTHING FOR ANIMALS...ITS A MONEY MAKING SKEEM.
I'm pretty sure I've been to this national park. It looks like Etosha, in Namibia. You camp behind a high fence and can watch the game come down to the waterhole from a "bunker" day or night. I saw a male lion, rhino and elephant there at the same time. The elephants wouldn't let any of the other animals drink while they were there and actively chased them away. When the last elephant left the rhino came in and the solitary male lion. It was something to behold. Nothing as dramatic as the video but still very special. Nature is mental 👌
Normally the elephants could easily be hostile to the rhino, but elephants are very smart and that one clearly understands the concept of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" because the lions want to eat them all. Amazing.
This is amazing, animals ave bigger hearts than humans do. They are showing compassion for this rhino, and human beings won't share compassion for each other. That is so sad.
I’ve only seen rhinos and elephants avoid or square off each other. Amazing footage of elephant’s attempt of rescue. The elephant’s compassion made me weep especially since rhinos are endangered
That wonderful elephant really tried to save the rhino. Such intelligent creatures, and they have such a nurturing demeanor about them. Mother nature at her finest, as well as at her worst. It’s all about survival, and only the strongest, and the quick witted will survive and have offspring to repeat the cycle.😮 That is the cruel and harsh reality of what it’s like for them living in the wild.
Omg the effort of that elephant trying its hardest to save that rhino?!?!?! I was in awe watching it and I got teary as he walked away in defeat. And that poor rhino when the lions came back 😢. Amazing to see what that elephant tried to do ❤❤
Should have definitely saved that Rhino not only because how endangered it is but apparently it was also stuck in Man made waterhole🙄 , those Cheap Kitties could easily found their next meal by scavenging from a rotting carcass or by stealing from Hyenas.
Its actually common for animals of a different species to unite against the wills of predators. I think its just instinctual. Either way- this was very moving! ❤
so stupid of the people/ camera man just watching, rhinos are endangered already and that is a man made water hole, they should really have called for help, so stupid
If need be the only thing they should have done was to chase away that nosy elephant and let the simba family enjoy their delicate meal, rhinos are not easy catch'_'
Truly heart touching moment, you clearly see that that's a man made dam, pond or whatever. That's not nature taking it's coarse, it's humans endangering wildlife
Never understood this way of thinking. Is a beaver dam a part of nature? And if it is, then why is that? Is it because they're an animal and animals are a product of nature, so anything they create is ipso facto "natural"? And if that's the case then wouldn't that same logic apply to humans as well? Why are creations of humans often regarded as unnatural as if we are some sort of artificial life form from somewhere off planet, when we are in fact just another expression of mother nature. I'd argue, easily the most impressive animal on the planet. And I'd also argue that the feeling that humans are this evil and irredeemable force of death and destruction, is what's "unnatural". We're the only animal on earth that has ever proactively tried to keep other animals from disappearing forever. You can argue that we're not great at it, but the point is that we make an attempt, on a level that no other animal in history is even capable of comprehending, much less attempting. Sorry, I know your comment didn't really warrant a lecture, it's just such a common trope and I cannot for the life of me understand how people can rationalize this thought process. We're not that bad as a species. We're actually extremely rare and amazing. Idk its just the "human bad" schtick is getting old

@@evandtor But I have no problem with acknowledging whether a certain thing is useful, mean, stupid or an accident... What I took issue with in the OC is the last sentence.... "That's not (nature taking its course), it's (humans endangering wildlife). The two situations that she describes (you may have noticed I put parentheses around them ^^^up there) as mutually exclusive, and I very much disagree. They are not mutually exclusive. I don't understand this increasingly prevailing idea that seems to presuppose that humans aren't a part of nature and that our actions, I would assume as a consequence of this presupposition, are more harmful than not, as they relate to wildlife and other forms of "nature". But the separation of humans from nature seems, and probably is, arbitrary as far as I can tell. In fact, people don't seem to notice that they're even implying this distinction. They just automatically go to "humans bad" when it comes to nature. Like they believe that we're encroaching on nature, as if there's any way or scenario in which our perceived encroachment is in any way, and to any degree, avoidable. The implication in that sentence is that we're not a part of nature, and I don't believe this to be a logically coherent position to take. Also it's just unhealthy and even toxic to some degree to view everything through this lens of human malevolence, something that people seem to be so keen to do these days... Sorry, I know I'm rambling lol
Unfortunately, the rhino was too weak to even stand, which the elephant recognized before retreating. Watching from afar, the passing elephant views nature taking it's course.
Now all the elephants will know whose footsteps to follow.. ❤. If only all the elephants had come together to save the rhino, he would have be alive. It's like one of the those situations in which most of the people will simply ignore the one in pain, except for that one courageous and man with real power who comes to help the fellow in pain❤
That's what I was thinking. Then I thought about how the majority of juvenile humans in our herds would have just done a Livestream of the matriarch and make rude comments rather than help. I didn't see any cellphones on the elephants, but maybe elephant Gen Zenith doesn't have the same empathy?
The respect that they all have is amazing. The lions did not attack the Elephant. They patiently waited for the Elephant to confirm the dinner plans. The Elephant tried to help the Rhino and even gave it a pep talk. The Elephant told the Rhino to get your behind out of there. “Here I’m splashing the water out making it easy, get your big rear end out”. “ come on you’re safe and my family is with me”. “I can’t lift you anymore but you can make it out”. Then the Rhino said “ thank you for everything my friend but I’m just to weak and sick to come out.” “ I appreciate everything but I just can’t due to my injuries, please tell my family if you see them”. Then the Elephant respected the wishes of the Rhino and confirmed the dinner plans with the pride. The pride of lions respectfully waited for the Elephant to go about it ways as they had their dinner and had many more members of their family to join. Everyone had mutual respect for each other.

If a person is there filming this suffering and not helping then I am ashamed of humans. If we are not there to help, then sure, all animals must eat to survive. But when you just stand and film this it's cruel and distasteful. Humans make up such stupid and unacceptable rules. And don't anyone defend filming this kind of thing. I live on a farm. I'm not a city kid that doesn't understand how nature works. Oh and elephants rock 🐘❤. And so do lions and so do rhinos.
@@nocurefordumbwith Rhinos so depleted and close to extinction, they probably would have intervened under different circumstances. This was likely a game drive with rangers and tourists, and they didn’t have the equipment necessary to pull the rhino out. They would have needed a winch and chains. It’s heartbreaking and awful. That elephant was so smart with everything it tired to do to break the rhino free, but it just got worse with every effort. What a horrible way to die.

Wow! This has to be one of the most amazing animal videos ever filmed. It shows empathy, kindness and determination. The elephant tried different methods, unfortunately, the poor rhino was too stuck. I pity anyone who would kill these majestic animals for sport.
Kindness is only human word. In animal kingdom it's survival. The lions hurt small elephants and elephants hate them so with other types of wildlife where food chain is involved.
@@ML.0001That’s untrue. Many animals are capable of empathy and kindness. Elephants and whales and wolves are known to grieve, too.

Amazing how the elephants separated into a cluster guarding the young, and sent out one to help the Rhino. Incredible video.

It is man-made, like many in Etosha
Thats what I was wondering, like why aren't they saving it. They're right there
They SHOULD be saving it not only bwcause of their endangered status, but also because it's a manmade issue that is killing this rhino in the first place.

@@davidjohnston3066 The lions cant even properly feast on the entire rhino if they even manage to kill it. Being in a manmade waterhole, the side of the rhino in the mud will eventually rot and poison the hole for any animal who wants to drink from it.

I'm surprised the people didn't intervene, with the rarity of Rhinos due to poaching.
Yea, I like their commercials on saving elephants, rhinos and others, but sit there and talk about nature taking its course. But animal rights frauds are POS. THEY PREY ON PEOPLES COMPASSION FOR MONEY. THEY CARE NOTHING FOR ANIMALS...ITS A MONEY MAKING SKEEM.
I think it's lovely how one animal will have compassion for another animal. I feel so bad for the Rhino, but I understand all of it. 😢
