My dad was in a near fatal car accident in his early 20's that left him brain damaged, I never knew what he was like before since I was only a year old when it happened, but when I saw basically the same thing happen to Charmy in the comic it cut DEEP. His role as the most OP character in Knuckles Chaotix reminds me of Cream and her role in Sonic Advance 2. The character who is youngest (and therefore closest in age to the target audience) and makes the game easiest to play (seriously play Sonic Advance 2 as Cream, she can beat the final boss WITHOUT MOVING)
A part of me is questioning if there’s any official media with them interacting in some form now. I mean they’re both the youngest of the main recurring Sonic cast and they’re both OP.

You know when you think about it charmy and shadow’s back story is kinda the same. Both started out with family which is lost during a militaristic raid, are sealed in a pod, and experienced something that sent them over the edge for at least a short period of time. In shadow’s case watching a little girl (who was also the only person to treat him as an actual being with emotions) be murdered by a grown adult with a gun and then be put in stasis for a very long time by the very same people who murdered her. Which just writing this out sounds ridiculously morbid.
... so this is why I can see Shadow and Charmy getting along so well. Am I the only one who legitimately thinks that Charmy and Shadow could actually be really good friends?

Honestly, after seeing all the stuff Charmy's had to deal with in multiple continuities, and real life, I feel bad for the lil buzzer. I never hated him, just felt kinda indifferent towards him when I was a kid. The kid's basically on a never-ending sugar rush, but his heart's in the right place.

Imma get this out of the way: I found this video very “charming”, the puns “sting” in a good way surprisingly, and overall, the video was pretty good and “beeautiful” as usual.

Still one of the greatest Sonic universes out there. Didn't have the "Two Worlds" thing and you could see Mobians and Humans getting along on the same planet.
They do eventually get genuinely good, but they have a very, very rough transitional period. After the original Robotnik dies (Issue 50), things go off the walls insane until Ian Flynn takes over and does clean up. Whenever I recommend Archie Sonic to folks, I usually tell them to watch the SatAM series (that way you can properly get attached to the Freedom Fighters), read issues 1-50, and then skip to issue 160, and just Google some of the important bits you've missed while you read onwards. It's not a perfect solution but honestly, unless you're a masochist like me who must consume EVERYTHING, you probably won't want to put yourself through what some of the writers cooked up.
[Lupintic Dream] Linguine I can never say the storytelling went down after issue 50. It definitely immediately went downhill when Sega forced Archie to adapt Sonic Adventure 1. You can just tell from the writing they were not prepared to do that. There are a couple stories I like after that train wreck. The 1st Metal Sonic having a change of heart and melting in the lava(later brought back as Shard), the Overlanders coming back(The concept of the story, not how it was actually written) and Return to Angel Island. Before Ian Flynn came into the book. And I know it was poorly handled but I still like the potential of Anti-Antione’s story.

I like the premise and even the writing to a certain degree, and I do think Jonathan Gray is a very talented artist, however I feel his overly exaggerated artwork at that point in time did not bode well for said writing. It was just a little distracting, for me at least. I'll give you Shard though. It was very cool when they did that psuedo-adaptation of Metal Sonic's death from the OVA, and how that would eventually lead into the development of Shard and his growth as a character. I really wish Shard stuck around for the post-Super Genesis Wave, but I guess Sega doesn't like the idea of there being more than one Metal Sonic, or Metal Sonic having an actual personality (even though they would later allow Captain Metal to exist)? Regardless, I would've liked to see his relationship with Nicole developed further. Really missed a golden opportunity there.
I was absolutely devastated when all of these misfortunes befell Charmy in the Archie comics, especially when Echidnalopolis kinda just disappeared. I'm pretty sure I actually dropped the comic for a while after that b/c I couldn't cope with the loss of the hundreds of characters that Kenders genocided when he left.

I dont like Charmy, but i dont hate him either. Tho this video made me realize that while he is definitely not good as a character, hes not really as bad as i remember. I just think that his Chaotix game counterpart is the best incarnation of the character.
Tbh I don't think Charmy is "hated" he's just kinda "there", I mean I remember folks complaining about Cream not being in recent Sonic games yet I didn't hear anyone complain about Charmy not being in TSR. Unfortunately he is just a quota character that's part of the chaotix but has very little substance as an individual (in Sonic rivals 2 you can play as Espio with Vector being in a support role yet Charmy wasn't in that game at all and tbh I didn't miss him). Tl;dr he's just your typical unpopular (but not hated) character whose appeal pales in comparison to other more prominent and/or more defined characters (in a franchise with such a large cast).
I think you will find the difference between Cream and Charmy is that at one point Cream was part of the main group and her absence in that group dynamic has become very obvious to people in the last few years. There are a lot of Sonic fans that became a fan during them times, me included, so it is a little weird seeing her being excluded. Especially since they replaced her with Chao in TSR explaining the reason she isn’t in it is because she is a child. I find that excuse a little poor though considering over half the characters are kids themselves. Oh people did complain the Chaotix wasn’t a team in it though. People have been asking for the Sonic heroes groups back for a while now 😅

Bro that part where saffron basically became his caretaker is sad shit. I have heard about the brain damage, but I never knew how bad the poor bee's life got in the comics. I personally never minded Charmy's antics nor did I find him annoying. I've heard some people say it's because of his voice, but I never really minded his English actors. That said, from what I have listened to, I really enjoy Charmy's seiyuu (or Japanese voice actor), Yoko Teppouzuka's preformance. She does an excellent job making Charmy sound adorable! That aside, I really enjoyed the video! It was fun learning about how the character was written and treated through different comics!
Man that bummed me out. Its gonna be tough getting through that when i get to thous parts in the comics. Charmy reminds me of the kids i used to hang out. Wanting to be a part of the conversations and the group, they would always try to be lively, curious and helpful. It always urked me when someone would say to their faces to shut up and they would remain silent, even when thier was absolutly no malice behind the intentions.

STC Sonic reaised his fist and was about to end this annoying bee once and for all but hesitated after seeing Charmy making goofy faces at him. Saffron come flying between them "No don't! Can't you see he's got the mind of a child. it's not his fault." Saffron pats Charmy's head "Charmy I'm sorry. Everything ill be alright" STC Sonic stands there confused.
Even though I prefer Ian Flynn by miles, I still like many of the things Penders put into the Archie Sonic world as well and I loved his Knuckles the Echidna series (the Dark Legion is probably the only thing I think Penders wrote better than Flynn). But just because I love the creations doesn't mean I like the creator.

Something i enjoyed in the British comics was that despite constantly getting told to get lost by his teammates, Charmy was the most consistently useful member of Chaotix.
I'm serious right as it was getting to the part about Charmy with brain damage, I remembered EXACTLY what happened. Like memories just flowed to the top of my head in that instant. It was surprising, and heart breaking
I was waiting for this. Glad to see the bug get some love. I definitely have Sonic X to thank for making me cool with the little guy. That show has issues but one thing I loved was Charmy’s dynamic with his gang and others. I really wish the games would give us more of that interaction.

I keep having these “OMG!!! I forgot about that” moments watching your videos. Cracks me up. I think the Archie comics being dark and having more intense stories made me feel really cool as a kid.

I knew there were some crazy stuff happening in the Archie comics, but I didn’t expect things to get that crazy and sad when it came to a character like Charmy. A part of me can see why Sega can get strict when it came to the Post-Genesis Wave stuff and currently on the IDW comic series. For me, Charmy is just a pure little kid character that I don’t mind. He can get annoying at times like a little kid can be, but he usually doesn’t mean any harm when he gets into trouble for the most part. I kinda like his naivety in the IDW stories. Kinda highlighted in the middle of the Metal Virus arc, with him really not liking that they couldn’t save everyone in the city he’s in. Which sadly resulted in him being one of the first to get infected. A part of me is kinda surprised that there doesn’t appear to be much moments between him and Cream yet though. With both of them being the youngest of the main Sonic roster and all. A nicely informative video you did here overall. His premier in the old Sonic Manga definitely looks weird so far.
I have a confession: My fanverse's version of Charmy ticked off the inter-universal being in charge of curses by preventing her from cursing my version of Silver with an early (and known) death, and now she's taking out her anger on every version of Charmy. I'm not joking. I did that in my fanverse, watched this, then realized I had doomed every Charmy. Oh, gosh.
STC in hindsight was just a downright cynical take on the franchise, almost a Family Guy approach to writing them. Nearly everyone was either an on the nose jerk or they were a punching bag for one. Only exception was Amy and Teckno and that's only because feminist executives demanded they put up a good example. Sure Sonic, Knuckles and the Chaotix would often ULTIMATELY do the right thing, but they sure would go that contemptuous extra mile to hide any smidgeon of a heart. I mean us Brits definitely love our sarcasm, even our warmest kids shows tend to have it to some playful degree, but I really feel like a lot of the US' attempts to have a 'likeable' edge and 'attitude' did not translate well here.

His role as the most OP character in Knuckles Chaotix reminds me of Cream and her role in Sonic Advance 2. The character who is youngest (and therefore closest in age to the target audience) and makes the game easiest to play (seriously play Sonic Advance 2 as Cream, she can beat the final boss WITHOUT MOVING)
A part of me is questioning if there’s any official media with them interacting in some form now. I mean they’re both the youngest of the main recurring Sonic cast and they’re both OP.

You know when you think about it charmy and shadow’s back story is kinda the same. Both started out with family which is lost during a militaristic raid, are sealed in a pod, and experienced something that sent them over the edge for at least a short period of time. In shadow’s case watching a little girl (who was also the only person to treat him as an actual being with emotions) be murdered by a grown adult with a gun and then be put in stasis for a very long time by the very same people who murdered her. Which just writing this out sounds ridiculously morbid.

Still one of the greatest Sonic universes out there. Didn't have the "Two Worlds" thing and you could see Mobians and Humans getting along on the same planet.
They do eventually get genuinely good, but they have a very, very rough transitional period. After the original Robotnik dies (Issue 50), things go off the walls insane until Ian Flynn takes over and does clean up.
Whenever I recommend Archie Sonic to folks, I usually tell them to watch the SatAM series (that way you can properly get attached to the Freedom Fighters), read issues 1-50, and then skip to issue 160, and just Google some of the important bits you've missed while you read onwards. It's not a perfect solution but honestly, unless you're a masochist like me who must consume EVERYTHING, you probably won't want to put yourself through what some of the writers cooked up.
[Lupintic Dream] Linguine I can never say the storytelling went down after issue 50. It definitely immediately went downhill when Sega forced Archie to adapt Sonic Adventure 1. You can just tell from the writing they were not prepared to do that.
There are a couple stories I like after that train wreck. The 1st Metal Sonic having a change of heart and melting in the lava(later brought back as Shard), the Overlanders coming back(The concept of the story, not how it was actually written) and Return to Angel Island. Before Ian Flynn came into the book.
And I know it was poorly handled but I still like the potential of Anti-Antione’s story.

I like the premise and even the writing to a certain degree, and I do think Jonathan Gray is a very talented artist, however I feel his overly exaggerated artwork at that point in time did not bode well for said writing. It was just a little distracting, for me at least.
I'll give you Shard though. It was very cool when they did that psuedo-adaptation of Metal Sonic's death from the OVA, and how that would eventually lead into the development of Shard and his growth as a character. I really wish Shard stuck around for the post-Super Genesis Wave, but I guess Sega doesn't like the idea of there being more than one Metal Sonic, or Metal Sonic having an actual personality (even though they would later allow Captain Metal to exist)? Regardless, I would've liked to see his relationship with Nicole developed further. Really missed a golden opportunity there.

I was absolutely devastated when all of these misfortunes befell Charmy in the Archie comics, especially when Echidnalopolis kinda just disappeared. I dont like Charmy, but i dont hate him either. Tho this video made me realize that while he is definitely not good as a character, hes not really as bad as i remember. I just think that his Chaotix game counterpart is the best incarnation of the character.

Tbh I don't think Charmy is "hated" he's just kinda "there", I mean I remember folks complaining about Cream not being in recent Sonic games yet I didn't hear anyone complain about Charmy not being in TSR.
Unfortunately he is just a quota character that's part of the chaotix but has very little substance as an individual (in Sonic rivals 2 you can play as Espio with Vector being in a support role yet Charmy wasn't in that game at all and tbh I didn't miss him).
Tl;dr he's just your typical unpopular (but not hated) character whose appeal pales in comparison to other more prominent and/or more defined characters (in a franchise with such a large cast).
I think you will find the difference between Cream and Charmy is that at one point Cream was part of the main group and her absence in that group dynamic has become very obvious to people in the last few years. There are a lot of Sonic fans that became a fan during them times, me included, so it is a little weird seeing her being excluded. Especially since they replaced her with Chao in TSR explaining the reason she isn’t in it is because she is a child. I find that excuse a little poor though considering over half the characters are kids themselves. Oh people did complain the Chaotix wasn’t a team in it though. People have been asking for the Sonic heroes groups back for a while now 😅

I have heard about the brain damage, but I never knew how bad the poor bee's life got in the comics. I personally never minded Charmy's antics nor did I find him annoying. I've heard some people say it's because of his voice, but I never really minded his English actors. That said, from what I have listened to, I really enjoy Charmy's seiyuu (or Japanese voice actor), Yoko Teppouzuka's preformance. She does an excellent job making Charmy sound adorable!
That aside, I really enjoyed the video! It was fun learning about how the character was written and treated through different comics!

Charmy reminds me of the kids i used to hang out. Wanting to be a part of the conversations and the group, they would always try to be lively, curious and helpful. It always urked me when someone would say to their faces to shut up and they would remain silent, even when thier was absolutly no malice behind the intentions.

STC Sonic reaised his fist and was about to end this annoying bee once and for all but hesitated after seeing Charmy making goofy faces at him. Saffron come flying between them "No don't! Can't you see he's got the mind of a child. it's not his fault." Saffron pats Charmy's head "Charmy I'm sorry. Everything ill be alright" STC Sonic stands there confused.
Man, I loved Flynn's writing, but even I recoiled at the way he handled Charmy. I remember the backlash for that one quite well.
Even though I prefer Ian Flynn by miles, I still like many of the things Penders put into the Archie Sonic world as well and I loved his Knuckles the Echidna series (the Dark Legion is probably the only thing I think Penders wrote better than Flynn).
But just because I love the creations doesn't mean I like the creator.

Something i enjoyed in the British comics was that despite constantly getting told to get lost by his teammates, Charmy was the most consistently useful member of Chaotix.
I'm serious right as it was getting to the part about Charmy with brain damage, I remembered EXACTLY what happened. Like memories just flowed to the top of my head in that instant. It was surprising, and heart breaking

He can get annoying at times like a little kid can be, but he usually doesn’t mean any harm when he gets into trouble for the most part. I kinda like his naivety in the IDW stories. Kinda highlighted in the middle of the Metal Virus arc, with him really not liking that they couldn’t save everyone in the city he’s in. Which sadly resulted in him being one of the first to get infected.
A part of me is kinda surprised that there doesn’t appear to be much moments between him and Cream yet though. With both of them being the youngest of the main Sonic roster and all.
A nicely informative video you did here overall. His premier in the old Sonic Manga definitely looks weird so far.

My fanverse's version of Charmy ticked off the inter-universal being in charge of curses by preventing her from cursing my version of Silver with an early (and known) death, and now she's taking out her anger on every version of Charmy.
I'm not joking. I did that in my fanverse, watched this, then realized I had doomed every Charmy.

I had totally forgot what they did to Charmy after the Egg Grape event. Damn, Archie could get dark when they wanted too.
STC in hindsight was just a downright cynical take on the franchise, almost a Family Guy approach to writing them. Nearly everyone was either an on the nose jerk or they were a punching bag for one. Only exception was Amy and Teckno and that's only because feminist executives demanded they put up a good example. Sure Sonic, Knuckles and the Chaotix would often ULTIMATELY do the right thing, but they sure would go that contemptuous extra mile to hide any smidgeon of a heart.
I mean us Brits definitely love our sarcasm, even our warmest kids shows tend to have it to some playful degree, but I really feel like a lot of the US' attempts to have a 'likeable' edge and 'attitude' did not translate well here.
