Rig Kontrol 3 Expression Pedal not working? Do this!

  • I just got a Rig Kontrol 3 guitar midi interface to use with my Guitar Rig Pro 5 rig. This is not manufactured or supported by Native Instruments any more, and when I plugged it in and installed the drivers I was appalled that I could not make the expression pedal work. Well, after a bit of trial and error I figured out the solution. I decided to make a video since I noticed a bunch of other guitarists out there are having the same problem with no solution.
    This video has been so popular and helpful - I decided to make a new channel dedicated to Guitar Rig Pro tips and tricks. Please head over there and subscribe if you use Native instruments Guitar Rig Pro! Be sure to leave comments and suggestions, and please hit "like". Then I'll know what kinds of videos to make about GR-Pro 5.

    Well, here we are years later... and this was super helpful. I bought a used Rig Kontrol 3 and the fella that sold it said it couldn't be used anymore... and I thought surely it can? I would have never stumbled on this solution myself. Thanks to you my friend I was able to set it up to control Wave GTR3. I'm rocking out like it's 2011! lol but seriously this was a big help and I really appreciate you sharing your discovery.

      Awesome. And not only! If you use the version of Controller Editor in the video you can configure the RK3 as a generic MIDI and Audio interface, which makes it possible to use with modern software as well - I've used mine with DAWs and also with Gig Performer, and BIAS AMP / BIAS FX (versions 1 and 2). It's a true SLEEPER for us. I'll try to do more videos like this in 2022 showing how to use it with the other software as well as a few other items, but I'll be posting those in my "Guitar Rig Guru" channel. Please sub and you'll know when I've released those new videos.

    Oh my God. I took my controller apart, removed the circuit board, tested the resistors and continuity, then randomly came across this video and now it works. NI suck at support in my experience but the user base is solid. Thank you.

    Thank you Schematica, this has been most helpful.
    I purchased the Rig Kontrol 3 unit from ebay a number of years ago and it worked with Guitar Rig 5. I used it mainly for the Wah and volume expression pedal. Over the years I upgraded to GR6 but did use the wah or stompbox functions on this (but on my pedal board). I have now upgraded to GR7 and added Neural DSP and dumped the pedal board. It has been said on numerous occassions that you cannot use Rig Kontrol with GR7... Oh yes you can and with Neural DSP Gojira in my case. This information was the basis forgetting everything to work. I use the embedded swith to turn the wah on and off as well as other stomp box actions. For the record, I'm still on Windows 10 and the drivers you suggested work. I tried newer ones just to see but I could not get it to work. So, use what this video suggests and you should have no trouble. 🎸👍🎸👍

    • @schematica
      @schematica  2 месяца назад

      This is excellent feedback thanks. I had not tried with GR7 (haven't upgraded yet). I was so angry and disappointed that GR6 was LESS than GR5 (They took out the native Rig Kontrol support so it can only be used as interface and generic MIDI controller, which is a pain). Also because GR6 was a paid update and the only new things in it for existing users were things I had previously paid EXTRA for: Rammstein models, and Reflektor (for doing custom IRs). The parallel signal path options and visualization in GR7 does look interesting... but I got so mad at them I went out and bought an AxeFX-III Mk II and switched away from the laptop rig altogether... bummer since I had spent more than a decade with versions of Guitar Rig Pro and had built up a very good library of presets. (Also something that made me angry with GR6 was that the drag-n-drop setlist creation ability was removed... they offered a lame workaround but it's sooooo limited).

    Thank you. you are the saviour! In April I had a lot of my stuff stolen (inc laptop and RK3) When I replaced the laptop it came with Windows 10. I sourced a 2nd hand RG3 too. But despair when I read that RG3 is not compatible or supported. NI were not helpful really except to say that it "should work" but there was no support. After 3 months of searching for a solution yours worked. appy bunny now. Amazing that a big company like NI don't know this, don't make the pedal anymore and to be truthful seem to have forgotten their guitar customers. Thanks again. Respect for sharing.

    • @schematica

      I work for a largish software company, and have seen both sides of this. One one hand a company discontinues a product and has to draw the line on costly support, but on the other, you have customers who trusted you when they bought it, and they deserve to be taken care of. I guess it's lucky there are enough of us out there with NI that we can support each other. It seems like they've abandoned GR (I'm on version 5 pro since 2013!) so currently I'm considering the software from Positive Grid Bias as a replacement, or Kazrog Thermionic (I have that, but haven't really tried in earnest to use it yet).

    Thanks for recording this. I had to revisit this, b/c I had this working before in Win 10, but had to repave my Surface Pro 4, and noticed that the controller was behaving strangely. A few things I noticed:
    1. It's very important that you do the right pedal direction in the Editor when calibrating. All the way up (heel down), all the way down (toe down). Otherwise the pedal won't even get highlighted or recognized in the editor when moving as demonstrated in the video.
    2. When you finally do get it calibrated right in guitar rig, sometimes when you close everything out and return later, the pedal will say "con" and it will no longer work when GR is loaded. For some reason GR turns off the controller. I had to go to View->Rig Kontrol to show the controller in the stack, then click the little power button upper left to re-enable the controller.
    It's a shame Native Instruments abandoned this part of the software

    I bought a used Rig Kontrol 3 but all the buttons did not work in Win 10
    I suspected this might be a hardware malfunction.

    Installation of Controller Editor 1.7.4 and recalibration of expression pedal solved everything.
    I appreciate useful information.

    Could this pedal work without PC and sw ? If I once set the midi chanel, program changes, cc in the Controll editor - will be settings saved in the pedal after turning off the pedal ? I would like to use this pedal with kemper... Thx for answer

    • @schematica
      @schematica  5 лет назад

      I haven't tried using it as a MIDI foot controller, however I believe this is possible from forums and documentation. But if you want to switch 100% to using a Kemper, my recommendation would be to sell the Rig Kontrol 3 on Reverb and use that money to buy a dedicated MIDI foot controller instead. There's plenty of demand to be able to sell the Rig Kontrol since they stopped making them...

      CON is the generic display when it first connects to the software. It normally will only work temporarily. I am not 100% sure but I believe you have the pedal in "performance" mode, and it will work fine if you are running GR standalone, but when you use GR in the DAW as a plugin, you will have to enable the RigKontrol in the DAW's MIDI hardware settings and assign it to the plugin. I use Cakewalk still as my DAW and this is what I had to do (though I normally only use the RigKontrol for live performance).

    • @schematica
      @schematica  5 лет назад

      Not sure - I suspect you have a faulty unit. The switches on these are usually scanned by a microcontroller, and if one PCB connection breaks, or if one of the switches is stuck in the shorted position, it could stop all of them being scanned by the processor. I'd try opening it up and giving it a thorough cleaning with WD40 in the buttons and actuate each several times and see if that helps. Beyond that perhaps take it to a repair shop and ask them to look at it for you?

    Hey an important thing when you use both the rig kontrol 3 and the maschine jam:
    I de-installed the most recent NI controller editor, installed the old version that supports the rig kontrol 3.
    I configured my rig kontrol 3 as described.
    But afterwards my maschine jam didn't work anymore.
    After a while I realized that i forgot to reinstall the most recent NI controller editor back.
    After installing the most recent controller editor Maschine jam worked again and the rig kontrol 3 kept working.
    Too bad that changing rig kontrol to midi mode is only possible in the old controller editor because you need to do the uninstall-reinstall procedure every time.
    I hope it helps someone expetiencing the same issue

You must install the OLD driver, AND the OLD controller editor, for it to show in controller editor. If you install the newest driver, it will still work in Guitar Rig Pro 5 but not be visible in Controller Editor. And unfortunately it looks like it has to use controller editor to work in GR 6... but I'm working that out for a new video soon on my Guitar Rig Guru channel.

    I’ve just got it working on Mac OS 10.14/Mojave after being told explicitly by NI themselves that it’s no longer able to function l.
    Was told as Apple has implemented some kind of new hardware signature or as they conveyed - “It needs a chip that isn’t in it so therefore it’s not our fault as that’s apples requirement”
    I’ve not heard of one other manufacturer of ANY piece of hardware cursing apple for requiring some new chip.
    I can only assume it might of been a USB C issue mixed with NI desperate to end support.
    I can’t wait to reply to NI support with my video evidence.

      I am using GRP5 successfully with a 2017 Macbook Pro which uses only USB-type C connections. I am using the genuine Apple type-C to USB3.0 + HDMI + C dongle and it works in High Sierra, I'm going to start a new channel soon on GR Pro 5 - even though it's now older software I think it's worth having community support. I am dual-booting MacOS (just upgraded to Mojave) and Windows 10, and I'm going to do a video on that because audio drivers work better in Windows I think (but that's a separate topic!)
      All that to say - Thanks for the comments and yes, it works for me. I suspect NI just don't really want to support it. I bet though, that with the help of marketing people like me who are loving users of GR, they could make this a very popular product... More to come!
