My guess as to why Madara knows how to sever the contract and Tobirama doesn’t? He experimented with Edo Tensei while he was figuring out how to create the Hashirama clone he used to siphon the life force out of the gedo statue. He probably saw Tobirama use it since we’re almost certain he did before and… you know… sharingan hand sign copying abilities, just kinda… absorbed them.
It’d be a perfect time to do it too, he had zetsus, rinnegan, access to anyone’s dna he wanted, and we know his plan was to be revived and even had the backup tag placed in Obito in case he had to force Obito to use rinne rebirth, so he was clearly aware that it was a distinct possibility Edo Tensei could and probably would be used on him. Having experimented with it before he died isn’t out of the realm of possibility
Well thought out and for sure would fall into the realm of ideas roaming in Madaras’ mind. My real wonder is if edo had been leaked think about it, even I found a way around it and know of two others.
My mind immediately went to "Tobirama didn't actually succeed personally in creating Edo Tensei, Madara figured it out for him." Would explain both inconsistencies really quickly, but also open some cans of worms in just more reasons for Tobirama and Madara to grow disdain of eachother.

Madara only severed the contract when edo tensei was undone by itachi. It could be that tobirama knows how to, but the edo tensei has to be undone before someone can sever the contract.
@@MMAli-rq8kd yea why on earth would tobirama or any other user of edo tensei cast the jutsu in front of others lol they would of course know of this "risk" and not give enemies this knowledge. Its more likely no one else knew the hand signs, but through tobiramas hidden research guys like orochimaru were able to discover it. Madara probably did the same, or perhaps he spied on tobirama casting it at some point before a battle?
My theory for how tobirama was using edo tensai was he was using hashirama's wood clones. Wood release is the only thing that creates something living, a wood clone would visibly be a living person that could be used for the host. That might be why tobirama's summons were so weak, because they didn't have a proper host but their weakness on top of being clones made them far easier to control. Like look at how they used white zetsu, he canonically was a yin yang release chakara clone. A clone made from a chakra release that can create living material

Also madera didnt break himself free from the jutsu. He just reproformed it after kabuto released it, so not much a weakness for the jutsu and more of a kabuto weakness.

There is a more straightforward explanation for why each reanimated ninja look they way the do.
Kabuto, talking through Mu's body, explained he returned Madara to the power he had in his prime.
I believe the caster has flexibility in reanimation, at least the perfected version of edo tensei.
A caster can choose any point from a person's life to reanimate them. It just so happens that for most every other reanimate ninja died in their prime.
That, or Kabuto had no real reason to invest in being super specific for each reanimated ninja, but took special care choosing what version of madara to reanimate. Ultimately choosing a version he believed to be the strongest (valley of the end madara), then base boosting him with Hashirama cells.
Just my belief on the matter.
Yea, you can customize an edo tensei to be in their prime or even better. Madara got his Rinnegan as an old man, but Kabuto made sure he had the eyes in his prime. Maybe Madara is a special case in terms of the edo tensei Kabuto was using. Plus it’s assumed the jinchuriki has their beasts in reanimation only because Tobi already had those beasts and inserted them into their bodies.
Perhaps! I think he just didn't bother to pick carefully, cause there's no way he thought Hiruzen died in his prime and he must know everything about him since Orochimaro's love-hate talked about all the time, non-stop.
For Madara Uchiha he gave extra care since this is how he threatened Obito to ally with him.

Plot twist, Edo Tensai doesn't summon you in the state you died it summons you in the state where the soul was at it's best. Hiruzen came back old because sacrificing his life for the village and defeating his adoptive son Orochimaru who he had let grow into a monster was his best. His life as a young man was actually filled a bunch of questionable stuff including leaving naruto to suffer and letting orochimaru run amok

To this day I am disappointed Kabuto did not make Edo Tensei Deidara go C0 even once. Deidara doing C0 continuously is 100x better and more effective than Tobirama's "Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags." Squadrons could've been wiped out with this.

i actually like how madara released himself using hand seals for 2 reasons 1 it shows that madara knows how to beat people at their own games 2 it makes sense that madara would be able to do this since over the years madara has learned how to use and counter a variety of jutsu because he is a prodigy among the ucuhia which is why he was the only one who can challenge hashirama so it makes sense for madara to exploit kabuto's overconfidence since he never counted on any ninja he revived knowing how to set themselves free
I think that the 3rd option, although unreliable, isn't just talk no jutsu. It feels right that if a soul becomes at peace (usually by losing all their regrets) that the jutsu no longer has power over them.
Actually if orochimaru had summoned Hashirama the first time at near 100% power he wouldn’t have been able to control him. Since it was explained the 2nd summon that he could break control whenever he wanted to

So Kabuto undid the Edo Tensei, Madara was about to be unsummoned, so he just summoned himself to become the summoner. If Orochimaru tried to release Tobirama, then Tobirama could have reestablished the summon.

The thing with the biggest risk of the jutsu is that it wasn’t really a problem for the summoner before Kabuto. Why? Because only Kabuto gave his summons enough autonomy to ever have an opportunity to try. Every other user of the technique exercised too much control over the summoned for it to ever be a possibility, not to mention that it isn’t even really a problem if you’re trying to create a technique to bring back dead children.
Just thinking...during the Orochimaru vs The Third Hokage fight, was the third coffin that the Third stopped Minato as what people would speculate. Or would it be another legendary ninja, perhaps the Third's father, Sasuke Sarutobi. Based on Minato's soul is inside the Reaper Death Seal.

Relatively new watcher, but I had a thought. Madara supposedly left a shadow clone of his dead body, which implies shadow clones can sustain large amounts of damage if they need to. But that raised a question for me if the user dies, does the shadow clone die?
Hypothetically, Madara could have died to Hashirama, and it was not a shadow clone brought to his grave... at least not originally. Instead, a shadow clone of Madara survived and replaced his corpse with another shadow clone. That shadow clone then grafted Hashirama's cells to itself, which is why the original Edo Tensi wouldn't have it, as the original Madara didn't have it either.
Then that shadow clone was the one who activated the Rinnegan, learned of its abilities, and tasked Obito to continue his work because a shadow clone still can get older. It is a near-perfect duplication with the limits of its chakra being the split amount.
So, shadow clone Madara died and disappeared, sending his chakra into Madara's dead body mixed with Hashirama's chakra, allowing his dead eyes to change to the Rinnegan still. That and Madara in ninja heaven was given all the knowledge of his shadow clone on its death.
This of course relies on the idea that a shadow clone does not disappear if the user dies, which I don't think we have ever seen.
About the release madara did... He was the only one to realise that the signs he used to summon Kurama are the same that will get him out of the caster's control. I believe he realised this when he failed to summon Kurama. Lets say he felt it.. 🤣🤣 truly a genius character. And about the black rods. They are in case you are not the summoner as in Kabuto's case,and every other caster we met so far, they use the scrolls. So its possible for a rinnegan user to bypass the seals using rods as kabuto was never shown able to use full control over the jinchuriki while it was implied every summoning had the scroll
You answered your own question. The reason Madara didn’t have the Hashirama cells when he was first brought back was the same reason he came back at the age of his first death.
I also think it depends on what condition they were in when the sample was taken. Kabuto could have taken Madara’s DNA from Tobirama’s lab. Tobirama studied Madara’s corpse so it stands to reason he had his DNA. The DNA of a Madara in his prime.
You'd think Kabuto would try to summon an Uzumaki like Kushina or Mito because of their sealing techniques. Or Fugaku since enemies were told to run away on sight.

If you said Madara came back young because that's how he died when Hashirama killed him and the other one was Hagoromo that's why he is young, then she should not have been able to use the renne because he died before getting it. @19:50. I was gonna say he was brought back young because that's the Madara Kabuto knows of, the Madara people heard of. Kabuto had no clue that Madara lived past the fight against hashirama save for Obito and Zetsu. So when he reanimated Madara he brought him back in his prime because he figured that's when he was at his strongest. It was just a coincidence he grafted hashirama cells into Madara, like Madara himself had done before he died

It is actually logical that Madara knows how to release edo tense because Madara planned to use it on him and he isn't the kind of person who would give anyone that kind of control over him, so figured out how to do so, but Tobirama never planned to use it on himself he even made it to kinjutsu as you mentioned.

It was Minato, that's why it didn't work. He didn't have enough DNA to recall Minato bc all of his essence was inside the Shinigami

That was due to Tobirama not being stronger than Hashirama (Orochimaru used white zetsu who was made up of said person's cells). Hashirama however, cannot be overtaken with his own body's cells and his binding can't be reinforced. Another reason was because Hashirama's very will was stronger than Orochimaru's.
I think not only did Tobirama use Edo Tensi, he used it in front of Madara. Madara was familiar with edo tensi and he knew the hand seals to release the technique.
Kind of wish there was a bigger caveat to being separated from the summoner like instead of it being able to be negated you have to be form the jutsu on yourself to get out of it and when you do it either adds a timer to you being alive or it halves to total chakra you have access to or both that means it could be used but would be a last ditch effort for anyone trying to get out of the summoners control and would have significant drawbacks
This the one naruto verse needs more strict rules and stay true to them that way concept of life and death is not overly played with without coming with a price . Rinnie rebirth I don’t mind if it’s one person and it follows the same principle as Chiyo revival justsu but I hated how nagato brought back the whole leaf it was cliche and ruined everything pain did and Litteraly took away from what naruto was about . My alternative for the pain arc should be if thier going to kill somebody off stand on that like for exsample kiba shoulda died , shizune , some random villagers , choji dad , kakashi as well then the only exception of who got brought back shoulda just been kakashi .
No kabuto purposely made him in his prime and than tweaked the cells in his body. Showing he knew his secrets. If he wanted he could've did that other fighters but he saw madara as his special toy for the war.

I believe I may know why Madara knows how to undo the edit tensei and Tobirama didn’t, u did say when Tobirama created it, it wasn’t perfect and even he didn’t know everything about. But they both grew up in the same lifetime Madara “died” before Tobirama but came back which gave him even more time to perfect it as well as know how to release it. Or it could be a downside of the caster summoning the jutsu when their brought back to life essentially their brought back knowing how to unseal themselves but I believe kabuki put a fail safe in that just in case, and kabuki was in league with obito so it may stand to reason that Madara was a special summoning, because kabuki did graft hashirama cells onto madaras body.
Something that always bugged me about yin/yang cancelling edo tensi. Didn’t Obito destroy Hiruzen’s head with a truth seeker orb? How did he regenerate afterwards?

There are 2 versions of Obito in 10 tails form. Stable and Unstable.
The version that hit Hiruzen was likely the Unstable version.
This is important because Unstable Obito does not have the Truth Seeker Orbs imbued with Yin/Yang release, meaning that it doesn’t negate Edo Tensei.
What if Tobirama made edo tensei because he needed a way to nuke the enemy. Madara said the purpose of edo tensei is to take yourself out with the enemy when he dropped chibaku tensei on the alliance. Just imagine Tobirama using his tandem paper bombs with his edo tensei.
Imagine if in the future someone uses Edo Tensei to bring back Naruto and Sasuke in their prime. Rinnegan and Six Paths Sage Mode restored. If they're legends just like Madara that enemy force will shit their pants and it would be glorious to see.
I feel like Konoha would do something to ensure this never happens. As well as every other village also wanting this to happen

The edo tensei is easily the most useful technique even in peace times like they could of used it to bring back narutos mom to raise him by using a criminal with a death sentence. I can't state how much it bothers me that they aren't using more frequently to bring back extremely useful people

Since you mentioned that Orichimaru and later Kabuto refined the jutsu it’s possible that the back up plan to cancel the control with Hans signs was added later. And that since Madara out lived Tobirama he may have had intel on it

Maybe the reason Kabuto had to give Hashi cells to Madara was because of the DNA requirement to revive someone. Using Madaras DNA to revive him could ignore the other DNA present even if ita grafted.
Even though Tobirama is the weakest user of the Jutsu he still deserves respect. Tobirama single handily proved that the Narutoverse has an after life which likely destroyed and changed any religion in the world. Not only that he found a way to drag the soul back to the material world in a nigh immortal body. He than refined the jutsu to the point you don’t need Chakra meaning anyone like Gai or Lee could also cast it.
You do know that lee and might gai has Chakra right they just can't perform ninjutsu or genjutsu
I think you still need Chakra to call the soul back from the Pure Land and bind it to a new vessel, and as a Ninjutsu, Gai and Lee would _not_ be able to do it. _After_ you've resurrected someone, however, you can call on them whenever you feel like without any additional costs unless you screw up and accidentally dispel the technique.
Thought about Madara's reincarnation: Madara used Izanagi to resurrect himself after his death, which allows some to rewrite reality as if it was a genjutsu being released. Maybe this kind of jutsu only affects the reality of the physical plane, and not the Pure Lands, essentially just creating a clone of himself in the physical plane. So as far as the Pure Lands is concerned, Madara died after being killed by Hashirama and never came back to life, hence why he's resurrected with only those powers?
Might make for an interesting look into exactly how Izanagi works.
Actually Kabuto's Edo Tensei was implyed to resurrect people at around 70/75% of their alive power. Orochimaru's final war Edo Tensei was the only one that brought them back at nearly 100%

when orochimaru cut open the reapers belly he released the souls of the kage to the pure land, making them able to be revived. You need two souls to edo tensei someone, a soul of a living person, that soul is used as a vessel to command the soul of someone from the pure land to enter the vessels body.
That was shown in the show. Orochimaru had to do a lot of work to get them back

I always thought Madara was young (well. Younger than he died, in his prime basically) when he was fully revived because Rinne Rebirth was basically completely directed to reviving him, who died years before the story. Also hashirama cells.
Even with Obito casting it instead of Nagato with his Busted Uzumaki Chakra Pool, it was still plenty enough to completely revive him cuz Hashirama Cells, which were also grafted onto Madara. The cells are also why Obito basically survived Rinne Rebirth iirc.
When Nagato used Rinne Rebirth, he used it to revive a wide swath of people, had used up a shit ton of Chakra already, and it was only since he invaded konoha. Obito had enough there and was forced to only revive one individual, and knew more about what was going on and black zetsu also forced him, who DEFINITLY knew more about the just and what it could fully do.
Though it kinda means if Nagato really knew this extent of it he could have brought back Jiraya, if not after his fight with Naruto then at least as an Edo Tensei, maybe?

my personal head canon why madara can reverse the edo tensei is not really the hand signs can reverse the jutsu, i like to think that madara weaving the hand signs is kinda like casting the reincarnation jutsu on himself again during/after kabuto releases the jutsu, skipping a few steps because both the sacrifice and the dna needed are still there. This allows madara to still inhabit the reincarnated body and no longer be under kabuto's control because madara now becomes the new caster of the jutsu. This explanation also fits why tobirama cant do the same while being under orochimaru's control, because he is not "dying" like madara is when the reanimation jutsu is being released.
Actually, Kabuto said to Madara that he restored him to his prime which implies that he rejuvenated his body until he was back to his younger self.

Just because you know the hand seals to Edo Tensei doesn’t mean you can escape it I don’t think. I think only if the summoner is weaker than the summon this will work. Plus people like Madara/Hashirama were so strong even without severing the contract they couldn’t be manipulated heavily. Even Orochimaru implied I can control everyone including Tobirama but Hashirama is different he can break out whenever he feels like it. I don’t think what Madara did was an ass pull. Madara was someone who could accurately predict the future several years in advance, and manipulate people to bring “his plan” into fruition. I don’t think it’d be hard for him to remember five hand seals. Plus Madara was alive when Obito was young. Orochimaru is older than Obito, and if Orochimaru had already known his improved version of Edo Tensei before Obito got hurt in the war I can argue he could probably find out/learn this improved version of Edo Tensei. I don’t know though I’m just a guy on the internet. (I find it hard to believe a guy who could plan like a decade and a half into the future couldn’t figure out how to use Edo Tensei. Plus he was smart enough to pick out Obito specifically, and stated that if there isn’t darkness in their heart you create it. Referring to Obito) Madara is a diabolical genius. What I always wondered about is the reincarnation of souls and edo tensei. If Ashura’s and Indra’s souls reincarnate and are reborn into the world (as Hashirama, Madara, Naruto and Sasuke), how can their souls be brought back with the summoning? They should already be in the living world. Do souls dublicate on reincarnation? Or is the soul and spirit being reborn somehow separate entities? What would that distinction mean?
Hey nick, why do you think that Itachi did not use a mind controlling genjutsu on the entirety of the Uchiha clan in order to spare the slaughter of them? So I have 2 questions. I'm sorry if they have been asked before. 1. Wasn't Orochimaru going to summon the 4th Hokage when he was fighting the 3rd Hokage? I thought that was why the 3rd was adamant about stopping it from fully emerging. Since the 4th soul was in the belly of the shinigami after sealing the kyuubi in Naruto, he shouldn't have been able to do that. 2. How was Nagato brought back with the Rinnegan. Since those were Madaras eyes? Wouldn't he have come back with his own since the DNA of the eyes and him are different?
I had coincidentally wondered about both points. Regarding Q1 there many theories, but none hold water. I think it's a plot hole. It seems Kishimoto was working to establish Minato as strongest Shinobi, but changed his mind after having issues with his own father so he went with Hashirama in part 2.
Regarding Q2v I think it's a contradiction that Madara was reanimated without his own Rinnegan eyes but Nagato was summoned with Madara's.

Im kinda confused about the rule about only being able to bring back souls from the pure land. Technically, when the 3rd Hokage killed himself using the death reaper seal technique, wouldn't that mean he should not be able to be brought back using edo tensai, but yet Oorchimaru was able to summon him in the war arc alongside the 1st and 2nd and 4th Hokage
He released them from the reapers stomach when him n sasukes group went to the shrine so they were no longer sealed by the reaper death seal.

maybe its not because Tobi or Hashi does not know how to undo the jutsu but its more of that they have initially agree with Orochimaru when he was asked why they were called upon again. if the talks between Orochimaru/Sasuke and the Reanimated Hokages went south, then we might have seen tobi and/or hashi breaking free from the edo tensei to save Konoha.
What if when the DNA is collected is important. Like Madara was revived in the form he was when he got killed by Hashirama because the DNA was collected from the clones body after the fight, but if DNA had been collected from his most recent body, then he would have came back as an old man. This would explain why Nagato came back with the rinnegan (which weren’t his by birth), but Madara didn’t come back with the Hashirama cells and his own rinnegan. This would provide the possibility for people to be brought back as far back as an infant state, if such DNA like Sarada’s umbilical cord was used for the summoning.

Something about Edo Tensei that never made sense to me was how Madara and Hashirama were brought back using this. Their souls would presumably be in Sasuke and Naruto, due to them being their reincarnations.
If you just got a buddy during a war to take an enemy and reincarnate yourself, it would be so much better than all the shit Orochimaru is going through, and it clearly doesn't hinder you from changing seeing as how Madara goes above and beyond the limits he already had.
It would be a great way to save yourself by putting your own murderer as the host of your body. It might even be preferable to being alive seeing as though you are immortal until you _want_ to die and also you have unlimited chakra. Having grey eyes is not a big enough drawback.
