Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. What a fantastic new album this would have made if they had lasted. All the three new songs (This is the love, Steal and Soul Boy) had the classic Spandau sound in combination with a very contemporary arrangement dominated by Tony's most remarkable voice. And I agree this song has a James Bondish touch.

Spot on the really great bands like Queen and the Beatles maximised all the talent with the band, here egos I suspect mainly Gary’s prevented that as Tony clearly had song writing talent and likely Steve Norman did as well - what a waste. Still saw Tony in Bath a few weeks ago and as ever he gave great value for money - a real top front man. Bet he’s having more fun and making more money than sour faced Gary Kemp is.
@@johnholt9399 John Keeble wrote a song for Tony's first solo album called Riverside. I think if given the chance they could've had albums and decades full of great music. Gary's ego got in the way
The new songs are weak as hell, they just can't hold a candle to any of the 80s Spandau albums.
This song has so much nostalgia embedded in it. Absolutely brilliant.
I've come across this a bit late, but I can tell you the story behind the old video footage. This was taken from a documentary feature called the British Hustle released around 1978. It was based on the underground funk, soul and jazz club scene in London and the South East, filmed at Clouds in Brixton with DJ Greg Edwards and the Gold Mine, Canvey Island with DJ Chris Hill. The Spandau Ballet guys were from N. London and i'm pretty sure they hung around the soul scene clubs such as the Lacy Lady in Ilford. This song is probably just a reminisce from their soul boy days (not New Romantics) and this is the only genuine footage from that scene. Of course the dancing doesn't sync - you've good legendary dancers like Clive Clarke dancing to the fast funk of Hi Tension at Clouds (see Tommy Mack's British Hustle for the whole thing). Sadly, the footage from the Gold Mine has never been uploaded, although it was too packed to match the dancing seen at Clouds. Was anyone else there at the time ? It would be good to hear.

It's incredibly good! I grew up in the 80s and I've always loved Spandau Ballet's music. Tony's voice is so unique and remarkable. The 80s... that was a great era with wonderful and significant musicians.
Spandau is a real class act. Many bands don't even dress specially for a show or video, they think it's casual night.
Hear, hear! It's my absolute peeve about artists! People want to hear AND see you, but when many treat they're attire as rehearsal, it's insulting to the audience.

Nice song. From 3:12 to the end of the song, the sound has a kind of futuristic flavour: the mix of the chorus " soul boy, western world" and the voice of Tony Hadley prefigure what could be the new spandau music style for the next years.

I understand why they decided for the dancing scenes but I would have preferred club scenes from the Blitz or their documentary. However this song deals with their career as Soul Boys through the Western World.

Why the heck does a singer as good as this need auto tune. Listen to when he says "Soul Boy" on the chorus, it sticks out like a sore thumb at 0:56. It makes me cross that producers seem to want to heap this soul-less technology on everyone, even the good singers.
I don't hear it, doubt it was used. people just like to use the word auto-tune....
@@mr.balloffur Its not used everywhere but it does stand out in places where the sound notably steps as vocal is snapped a few semitones this way and that to the desired (and un-natural) levels of accuracy. Also, you know how in photos people use filters to smooth out spots and wrinkles on Instagram photos but then the texture of the skin is all lost, that's what I hear in other parts of this vocal, like its been digitally processed to remove all any anything the algorithm decided was unintended. I would like to hope that maybe its not, but what ever they have done processing wise to this vocal makes it appear that way to me, similar to what they do to Michael Bubble, even though he also does not need it. That said, I like what this song stands for and it still would not be half as good without Tony's voice on it.
Love this song.. but I am sorry..this video doesn't fit AT ALL with the song... it looks like a cheap effort.. it looks like the 2 parts don't even belong together.. the dancing croud and the band performing.. did they steal that footage ??
They could have done a lot better... the beat the croud is dancing too is a lot faster than the song is !?
The song has a james bond feel to it.. I would have expected that same feling from the video..

I think you should read the information underneath the video. It says that this song is written for a documentary called Soul Boy and is about Spandau Ballet. That's why the video doesn't seem to fit the song.
Miranda, let me take a guess, you are not English, and even if you are, you were not in the London clubs between '74-'79 era, thats where the old dance video came from, it was very influential period for Tony Hadley and the new romantic movement and groups like ABC, Duran Duran etc.
Sometimes things are not blindingly obvious.The old clubbing video is original, I can recognize many people in the clips. It would be great to see the original film to see if I can recognize myself or other friends.
No you are right I am not English.. but I did live in London between 84 and 87 ! So no I don't know the club scene before 1984..
Still I have seen footage from the early days of the new romantics.. and yes I know it was very important to the band.. but still I feel that it doesn't fit with THIS particular song !
Miranda, I'm not surprised that you don't see the link, it's definitely not obvious if your were expecting something new romantics style.
The club scene in London went in many directions through to the New Romantic era, primarily though it was soul/funk based, originally from the gay clubs, then the original "disco" as opposed to the late 70's cheesy pop/disco and then circa 1976 Punk happened. Late in the 70's after punk had gone mainstream people were turning back to more stylish dress, and buying what they could get and make from thrift, 2nd hand stores and the like.

Lacklustre song and video. I am usually so enthralled with Spandau but this does not come close. Steal is beautiful. But with Soul Boy, even the lyrics embarrass me. This is just a temporary bump in the road, and I look forward to what happens next.
