- Were you thinking about cheap living in Mexico, or living in Mexico, or moving to Mexico? This video is all about Cheap cities in Mexico for retirement, or if you are young and working on line, then this is about living cheap in Mexico.
People ask me all of the time about cheap cities in Mexico for retirement. People ask me, “Can I live cheap in Mexico?” Right after that they ask me, “Where can I live cheap in Mexico?”
So if you you are thinking about saving money in Mexico, or if you want to live cheap in Mexico, in the video you will see places that nobody ever talks about.
Sure, many people wonder how to retire in Mexico, and they want to retire cheap in Mexico. They want to know about cheap places to retire in Mexico. They come right out and ask me, “Hey, Bill the Geek, can I retire cheap moving to Mexico?'
But many people that watch our videos are not at retirement age, they are younger and they want to know about renting cheap in Mexico.
So you can retire cheap living in Mexico, or you can just live cheap by moving to Mexico if you are working on line. Many Expats tell their friends in the US and in Canada, “Retire in Mexico Now!”

I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for...
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

I am 81, and moved to Queretaro in 2021. I was 20, when I first came to Mexico, and fell in love with Acapulco for over 61 years. I have visited around the world, and all 50 USA states on my own dime. Earthquakes were the deal breakers for retiring in Acapulco. I have been speaking Spanish since age 14 as a second language.
Certainly, Acapulco was amazing back in the day, but today not so much so anymore. Back then, I visited Puerto Vallarta when it was still a very small village. I loved the tropical climate around P.V. - it is where the jungle begins!!!
Acapulco lost much of it's charm, but even today P.V. has still is charming.
I am heading there, too! Keep hearing about how bad the food is (and I experienced it myself when I visited the first time), which makes me consider Guadalajara, too. I have a friend from Guadalajara.
Do you like it? What neighborhood did you move to?
We were there in Acapulco for the big earthquake there 2 years ago - and it was 120 seconds of sheer terror! But, I have to say, that the recent hurricane sounded tons worse! I will do a video on the hurricane there soon. One woman I am speaking to had her refrigerator go flying out the window of her 7th floor apartment in the hurricane while her apartment fell apart around her; she is so lucky that both she and her dog lived through it. The hurricane lasted for about 7 hours and the people sounded totally traumatised from it!
@@WeDidntExpectthis i USED to go to Acapulco, but it's overrun by gangs today and the last time I was there the Main avenue looked like a Xmas tree with all the police or military operations going on, fu there. It used to be an outstanding, fun resort, but it is no more. Puerto Vallarta or Huatulco are excellent places today!!!
Yeah we lived in Diamante Beach which was the newer part of Acapulco but I think many other parts of Acapulco could be a bit dicey@@dennishassler605
I am a young 70 year old. I will be moving to Mexico soon. I look forward to community I can connect with before I get there.
I;m 60 and doing the exact same thing!! Congrats!
You are 70 years old. End of story
My wife and I relocated to Morelia, Michoacan two years ago. We rented a beautiful 3brm/3ba home in a very nice neighborhood, for 8000 pesos ($400 USD) per month. If you're not infatuated, or demanding beach front property, Mexico is very affordable. There's a lot more to Mexico, than laying on the beach. Due to the elevation, and mild climate, we don't need home heating or A/C.
Morelia population is around 750K. Best move ever!
Howdy Russell,
Thank you so much for that information, yes, there is so much more to Mexico than being on the Beach. Groove on.
Best,
Bill
I’m an expat living in Acapulco…. I rent a 2bdrm, 2bath, unfurnished condo about 100 meters from the beach for 11.5 pesos per month.
Hi, did you mean to say maybe 11500 pesos? That would be approx $300 USD, which sounds great! Correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks.@@lorisanchez9491
@@maggiemae-d3u$11,500 pesos it’s around $600 dollars now the exchange it’s about $1 dollar= $17 pesos

When considering where to move in Mexico it is extremely important to consider more than cost. Think about what activities are available, safety and climate. I am a permanent resident and have lived here almost 15 years. Be sure to check the US Dept of State website travel section to learn which areas to avoid for safety reasons. Tepic is not considered safe.
Thank you for the great advice. Safety is very important when choosing a place to live.
Thanks for letting me know which places have a lot of KFC, McDonald's and Burger King.... Now i know where to avoid!
You are very welcome. But tell you what, I mention these places not because I go there, but when you see them show up, it means the cities have very good economies. What to stay away from is places where you see Americans and Canadians.
Best,
Bill
Thank you!
When I was in Mexico City I used to make fun of Americans who only went into fast food places, now that I live in San Diego, if I go to Downtown Tijuana for any kind of reason (Doctor or something) and just need a quick bite to eat, it's just easier to walk into Burger King or Carl's Jr real quick than to take too much time walking around wondering what's gonna be "OK" or not. So it's just another option 🤗!
My husband and I want to retire in Guanajuato. My husband is from there. It is so beautiful there!
Guanajuato is one of my favorite cities in Mexico!
I live in durango its a very safe and growing city great food incredible nature culture you need to visit all the spots
Yes, Durango is very nice, very friendly people.
Great video so and thank you for sharing. Moved to Patzcuaro, Michoacan in 2012. Very inexpensive, 30 miles from Morelia where all the box stores are! Nice Spanish Colonial in the mountains. Perfect climate all year round. Very safe!
Great to hear. I will have to visit. Can´t wait.
You will love it. @@BillDallasLewis
Hi, how much is the rent cost in Patzcuaro?
@@danyelemus45 Of course it varies. A friend of mine recently moved from a beautiful large house because they were raisng the rent to 9,000 pesos, about 525 dollars per month. . Don't know what she was paying before. This is a three bedroom home with a large yard behind for parking a car. Most decent places start at about 4,000 pesos. Exchange rate is becoming less favorable all over.
Patzcuaro is getting more and more expensive. I have family that lives there and other towns in Michoacán. Unfortunately, Patzcuaro is now being nicknamed as the 2nd San Miguel de Allende…which is not good for the people who were born and raised in Patzcuaro and Mexicans in general.
We retired 4 months ago at 55 and 60 and we are slow traveling between Mexico and Argentina over several years. We are cool weather lovers, speak Spanish, and are currently living in Matagalpa, Nicaragua….all in for about $1100/month…
Next we plan to live in Guatemala for 6 months then Mexico for 6 months, before heading to South America.
We think we might like these cities in Mexico-
San Cristobal de las Casas
Morelia
Puebla/Cholula
Oaxaca
Queretaro
Guanajuato
What a wonderful life you have. Enjoy more for all of us.

How do you find rentals on the cheap for 6 months at a time? Are these AirBnBs? Thank you 🙂
@@cynthiareese2425
For us it will be Airbnb or hotel for a week and then get out on foot to find the 6 month rental, BUT in places like Guatemala we will likely be in 3 cities for two months each. That makes it more challenging and more expensive.
Guanjuato was lovely but as left there was a huge cartel shootout... apparently this is commonplace now...

@@BillDallasLewis there are some nice places to visit and live in: Xalapa the capital city, Coatepec about 10 minutes from Xalapa, in here you can taste the most delicious coffee. Xico is a magic small town, it is about 30 minutes from Xalapa. Naolinco is about an hour from Xalapa, here you may enjoy the traditional celebration in Dia de muertos on November 1 and 2. Perote, here the weather is kind of cold but the landscapes are wonderful; in contrast, Veracruz city: sun, beach, sea food, party, ... you will be welcome anytime!!

The best place to retire is Chapala Lake, any of the towns around it. Ajijic is a favorite. The climate is great! I don't recommend to move to the village because of the firecrackers on their feast days, that in some towns like Ajíjic will start around the 30th of November for their patron Saint, it will continue for the festivity of Dec 8 and 12, and continue through the whole month of December. They start at 5 AM until after 9 am. I used to have a house there. I did not mind the noise. But can be annoying for some one. But to live there is a delight.
EXCELLENT BILL, nice to see other choices, thank you

I live a full time RV life style.
After watching, I may be returning to Mx sooner than I think after considering how much I pay to live in my class C motor home.
Now I’m curious. I might need to ditch my RV. Seems I might be more comfortable in one of these beautiful cities.
Thanks for sharing.
This video was uploaded 3 weeks ago (July 2023), yet the prices for all the stats in the video are for 2021. After COVID-era inflation, might as well be comparting rent prices of WW2. But the effort in comparing cities, doing the video is commendable.
Hi Yurly,
Yeap, finding data for all over Mexico was tough. But, the prices do show where is more expensive and where is less expensive overall. People really need to visit these places, but, I think the prices will be pretty consistent even at 2021 pricing. Thank you very much.

Beach towns are typically at a low elevation and could be uncomfortably hot were it not for sea breezes. If a town is set back from the ocean, it may not benefit from the same sea breezes.
Thanks for the helpful info.
Durango Durango mi Tierra querida 🦂
Try the smaller towns like Nuevo ideal in Durango or also Parral chihuahua.
Many large towns are very economical, but they also lack infrastructure especially for tourists. Primitive towns don't have restaurants, but the people are all amazingly friendly and helpful, but you'll have trouble finding that high quality coffee in most native towns.
Like your focus on small towns.

I spent a few months in Vallarta in the winter of 2018, sharing a 2 bedroom apartment about 10 minutes walk from the beach in Old Town. It cost about $400 a month, not including utilities. When the friend I shared the apartment with returned to Vallarta last winter, the new place he rented was A LOT MORE. Probably around 3 times the cost of the place we shared in 2018. Not sure if he'll return there next winter, but if I return to Mexico at some point, it won't be to Vallarta.
Howdy Bruce,
Yeap, I had a great place in PV for 5 years. Everything was new, secure, internet, fully furnished. $400 US per month. Rent did not go up for 5 years. I don't know what it would be now.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I have visited P.V. since it was a small village and even today it hasn't lost it's charm. It does get crowded in high season, so I go there off season - not so sure how I'd like it during more crowded times. Maybe Huatulco would be a better place, because it's not so crowded and probably will remain pristine for a very, very long time.
Great info on current prices. Thank you.
I'm not current, but always find a place and usually right in the center of everything. Some locations outside of PV were actually priced higher, so in PV there's competition, so maybe the prices are high during high season, but you can get local pricing not far from the ocean and of season prices are half off everywhere - you can expect that. Still, there's so many nice places in Mexico - you can find outstanding prices everywhere only it can be true during high season prices can be higher.
TY Bill. Great info. I will definitely check out a couple of these places. JocoTepec and Guanajuato sound most appealing to me❤
Both are very nice places. I lean towards Guanajuato. That place is the BOMB!!!!! If you visit that place, you will get rid of JocoTepic on your list.

@@BillDallasLewis Where did you decide on, Bill?
Nice video. Any thoughts about Atlixco, Pue.? A couple of years ago you could buy a nice townhouse there for $30,000 USD. I did all of my traveling in Mexico between 1967 and 1982 (more than 100,000 kilometers in all but four border states. Many of the large coastal resorts (Sayulita, etc) consisted of a few thatched houses when I was there. Cancun had seven hotels, Playa del Carmen three to four houses, no hotels or restaurants at all near Tulum. Guanajuato had a pop. of about 37,000, Puerto Vallarta maybe 25,000. No KFCs or Burger Kings. For most people Sears was the high end big box store, and there weren't many of them. If I were to move to Mexico I'd probably be disappointed by all the changes, but I'm sure the changes have benefitted most Mexicans in terms of their standard of living.

I don't accept the pricing sometimes, because I've been around Mexico enough to know I can always find an excellent place given I'm willing to consider the Colonias around the cities - those that stay in the tourist areas usually have to pay a premium, but not far away there's excellent choices closer to the locals which is fun, too.
If I move to Mexico it will be to get away from KFC and McDonald's, not celebrate that places have them.
My thoughts exactly. If that are your parameters, just stay in gringolandia
EXACTLY my thoughts. It's total trash, designed to kil.l. Not even real food.
We've the same goals 😊
Excellent and inspirational video. If there are any alternatives to Facebook on how to connect with the expat or locals, please let us know. Thank you, Bill.
Yeap, I hear you. I am not a big Facebook fan, but there are things about Facebook that work pretty well and that is groups. I use Facebook for groups. That´s about it.
Best,
Bill
Colima is a hot zone for cartels. Mexican American here ( living in USA).
So is Washington DC, USA
Excellent video Bill. Keep these comparisons of inexpensive locations coming! Much appreciated
Thank you CrabLegs,
Stay tuned. More to come soon. I am hitting the road again next week.
Best,
Bill
Try Taxco, Guerrero next time. I'll guarantee you'll love it
Ok, let me put that on my list,
Thanks much,
Bill
I saw you said prices from 2021- everything has gone up a lot since then everywhere
I think you might be surprised. When I lived in Puerto Vallarta, I paid the same price for rent for 5 years. The price never moved. Also, the prices are from 2021, but you can see the comparisons from city to city.
Best,
Bill
You don’t look like a geek but who knows?!? I look more like a geek but I am not one. I would like to know how to make great videos but not being a geek, I am afraid my videos would suck! Thanks for being you and having an entertaining channel!!
Hola My Brother!!! I say that because your name is Juan Moreno,,,,, Soy Moreno tambien. Ha!!!!
Yes, I am a geek. I just love making these videos. I can't stop. It is all about telling a story. I try to do it. And with each video, I try to do it better. Thanks so much for your comment Hermano Moreno.

Haja,
Bill: My name is not really Moreno. Keep up the great work!!
Queretaro was my ideal city.
My neighbors just came back from there. They stayed for 2 weeks, they feel in love with the place and they are moving there in October.
@@BillDallasLewis 😆 I know the feeling. I fell in love with Queretaro in 4 hours but I live in Guadalajara for now.
@@BillDallasLewis Have you visited Guadalajara? If so, what do you think?
@@sesomnoslen5729 I lived in GDL for 4 years. I was totally happy with it. So much to see. So much to do. So much to eat. And the weather was wonderful. In 4 years, I think I saw maybe 10 Americans and or Canadians. I liked it.
Can you do a video on Puebla vs San Luis Potosi for long term living?
Hi Gif,
I lived in San Luis Potosi for 9 weeks with a family years ago. I want to go back there for a video, Puebla is on my list.
Thanks for asking.
Best,
Bill
it’s interesting to see you included a Colima place in the list, while not many other youtubers mentioned this place, do you have some detailed video when driving, visiting there? How do you feel the safety there in Colima?
there is a reason because US States included Colima in Do Not Travel section, while other Mexican states are only in normal Exercise Increased Caution When Traveling,
- Colima state due to crime and kidnapping
Yes, when I was headed there for those videos, there were comments about things going on in Colima. Things being burnt and and things like that. I was checking out the Expat groups of people that live there. But I had a guide as I mentioned in the video. She has lived in Mexico for as long as I have, and she decided that Comala, 10 mintues from Colima, was the best place to raise her 2 year old daughter. The place, Comala, we wonderful. I had no problems and I decided right there that I could live there. i was wonderful. So, whatever. I go places that other RUclipsrs don't go to. Mexico is great and safe all over.

Bill the Geek
I think a more then honorable mention would be xochitepec Morelos. I live in a private development and pay 350 dollars per month fully furnished house, a 5 minute drive on a decent well lit road to the toll freeway to Mexico City. This exit however is not tolled thus only one toll of 10 dollars is applicable for the drive from CDMX.
Wow
I've lived here in Cuernavaca Morelos for years and I have never visited Xochitepec Morelos. I prefer Cuernavaca because they have just about every franchise restaurant and big box stores here if I ever need them. I love San Miguel de Allende and also lived there, but it's been an overpriced expensive gringo enclave for many years.
Any recommendations on long term renting 😀
@@MelandRandy Hi Melanie, I have lived here in Mexico for many years, so if you have any questions I could help you with let me know. Do you prefer living in a temperate climate like me or do you prefer hot, humid weather? Do you want to live with a lot of Expats or would you prefer a more Mexican town or city with hardly any? You can live here as cheaply or as expensive you want.
