Hey guys, thanks for watching! There does seem to be a lot of discussion about what counts as a true “line array”. Some people have actually been quite helpful in the comment (it does happen sometimes lol). But overall I just want to clarify a few things: 1) my review of using these for crowds up to 500 people stands true. Regardless if you want to call these line arrays or not, I used it for shows up to 500 people and documented and filmed how they worked for us. You can make the decision from there. My main PA system is the EV50, and this system is half that price and throws the sound further. Many bands are on a budget, and this is a great option. EV make my favorite speakers. Not everyone can afford them. 2. Do pay attention to the chart of how they can be angled (which I mention briefly in the video). That does help for larger crowds. I should have spend more time on that, but the video was already long enough. 3. If you want to find more info about types of speakers including point source and line array, this is a video on another channel that did a great job explaining it: ruclips.net/video/PTwg61OUvPE/видео.htmlsi=RufJzJVpTwK2EESm 4) I have no problem with learning more and being correcting if I made a mistake in the definition of “line array.” However, in the end, the places we played were very happy with the sound, and all of them wanted us to play again in the future. Regardless of how you define these speakers, they got the job done, and people had a good time. That’s what’s important. It’s marketed as a line array, and my understanding is that it was. But there does seem to be a disagreement about that overall. It’s funny. I deleted a rant that I filmed about dickhead sound guys who spend their days trolling people about their gear. I should have kept it in this video 😂 I said multiple times to get the right speaker for this job. This is great for up to 500 people max. I showed how I used it, and I still continue to use it. Hopefully that helps you make a decision. Get the right speaker that’s right for you, ignore arrogant sound guys (and listen to the helpful ones), and do what works best for your band. I do still use this system after this video came out. Cheers everyone. Thanks for watching 🤘
I also wonder how many people are just commenting because the thumbnail doesn’t LOOK like line arrays and they didn’t watch the video… thumbnail commenters are getting and more and more common now unfortunately 🤷
@@ScottUhlMusic Line Array has to do with the radiation pattern of the speaker. Point source radiates in to a sphere, line array radiates in to a cylinder and that makes the decibel levels reduce less with distance from the speaker in a line array, this is great when you are trying to make it loud enough in the back row without blowing out ears in the front row. As for how they look, a line array has to be a certain length compared to the wavelength being played back to achieve that radiation pattern and the driver spacing has to be very close to avoid comb filter effects at higher frequencies. It might function as a line array for high frequencies if there is a tightly spaced line of tweeters in each speaker, the mid-range, not so much. The problem is if you have low frequencies radiating in to a sphere and high in to a cylinder, walking farther from the speaker will sound like applying a high-pass filter. This is less of a problem indoors because the floor and ceiling kind of smash the radiation pattern to fit the area but that doesn't make it a line array. Any way, my big question is how tough are the speakers and how good is the warranty support. I have seen lots of JBL Professional gear being rented out for gigs and very few problems. When I look at their prices, I really like them compared to brands I have never heard before. My setup is all active speakers, two JBL EON715, one EON718 sub and one EON710 as a stage monitor. The sub was bought used and the rest were "open box" from retailers. Knowing that the EON600 series is a rental workhorse, I was not afraid to invest in scratch and dent type speakers although, they all look brand new. Looking at cone area, 1x 15" is over 50 pi and 8x 4" is only 32 pi and the 15" probably has a lot more excursion. The JBL are going to move more air. For the sub, an 18" is 81 pi and 2x 12" is 72 pi so again more air. As for amplification, the 715s are 1,300 watt each, bi-amplified and the 718 is more. Quite simply they have more power to push that air with too. That is good and bad. Your powered sub probably won't max out a 15A circuit so power is easy, my setup might need two circuits if the volume is turned up high enough. For price, mine was around $1,800 including shipping but it would be well over $2,500 if everything was new. But there is more, the EON700 line has blue-tooth connectivity if you need that, a built in parametric equalizer so you can ring out the room, a DBX Drive Rack anti-feedback feature and sound ducking. If you know what you are doing, the EON700 series has what it takes to make your room sound great with almost no feedback or you can use one EON715 to busk with music on a cell phone, a mic and a DI box plugged in with no mixer. I don't know how mine sounds for a 500 person outdoor gig but for a ~small club it is pretty massive overkill. The issue with overkill is that there are not many cheaper options out there and the cheaper options that are out there are not products that I see in rental companies. The choice was easy for me, I went with what I could trust. As for sound recorders, I went with the Zoom H6 so I could use it as a sound recorder and a 6 channel digital audio interface. It's not much bigger than the recorders with only two or 4 channels so I went with the most versatile choice but that was a while ago, things might have changed.
I mean in the end you are so right about „get the speakers you think necessary to get the job done“ This goes both ways. If it works, stop complaining. If my speakers are better than what you as a location can provide, stop complaining about me bringing my stuff: my own wedges, my PA if possible/necessary, my mic stands etc. when you as a venue only profit from it by not having to provide anything. I don’t get it… But stage presence is so much more important than gear🤷🏻♂️
@@jimi272 I don't think I was complaining but I know what a line array is and the set in the video does not appear to have enough length to be a true line array. With that said I doubt it performs like a true line array and I don't want people to figure that out after paying $1,700 if they are expecting it to do true line array things. I also laid out what I chose and why. I know what mine can do. It seems expensive to some people but to me it's close to the minimum you can pay for rental grade pro audio. When I say rental grade I mean gear that can go through many hands, often many hands who do not care at all about how the gear is treated and through that it produces sound good enough to pay for. My gear is permanently installed in the venue so anybody performing there can use that sound system. I won't complain about a performer bringing their own gear but the whole idea of setting up our sound system is so that performers can show up, use our gear and have good sound without having to bring in gear and set everything up before each show. We are trying to make everything better piece by piece until we get to the point that everything we have is as good or better than anything anyone would bring to a venue our size. I don't know why a performer would complain about that. We are just trying to have consistently good sound with gear that should last a decade or more if we don't abuse it. Professionally I have seen JBL, Electro Voice, Meyer (I think) and QSC as rental gear. I have never seen PROREC as rental gear, so I've never heard it. With that said, I bet it works well when it works. I know my cheapo JBL setup works well and I expect it to last. PROREC might be built like a tank and last a long time but I don't know. I know that assembling JBL line array wedges is pretty easy (rental companies use them) because I have installed them in large ballrooms (usually stacks of 8 wedges flown from a truss) and outdoor festivals (really large stacks). The video makes it look like assembling the PROREC wedges is hard, that won't affect the sound but it shows that they didn't take the time to get everything right. I don't know about you but I don't want to fight gear before a gig.
@@ComodeWorldI’m talking about venues who provide shitty sounding Wedges that you have to fully turn up to the max so you can hear your voice because the sound quality is so bad. -> Stage sound/volume gets so bad that it’s even crappy sounding in the crowd. I‘m talking about venues providing a set of Speakers as FOH that are lower grade then QSC K10, and then think they can provide sound for a full rock band with it. If your venue can’t handle a rock band, don’t book a rock band. And don’t make the musicians feel bad for bringing their tools necessary to do the job (for example: WHY DO YOU BRING SUCH A FANCY GUITAR AMP?) This is the reason why so many, even smaller bands, bring their own IEM. And luckily at least IEM is accepted and no one can spread bad vibes for bringing your IEM Rack. (Though personally I’m not a fan of IEM) I think it has to do with the whole mentality humankind is in at the moment. People think they deserve to get everything, must be as quickly as possible, but it shouldn’t cost anything. Just yesterday I watched a RUclips video of a sound tech vlogging: he was booked to provide audio for a podium discussion. Only to have the organizer constantly worrying about how the speakers might actually block a tiny portion of the view to the speakers. (Allthough these speakers were far above head height). Sorry for the rant but I‘m just sick of people wanting top quality but not able to compromise any inch towards themselves. Actually I see this is a much bigger issue and imo concerning a big portion of humanity atm.
It's good to hear that this works well, and that more affordable options are becoming available. That said, the system seems to actually function as a stacked point source, rather than a line array. Proreck doesn't use 'line array' anywhere on their website for the product, but seems to have no qualms with other people saying it anyway. The high volumes you mentioned appear to come from a sky-high driver sensitivity, and then an extra 12 dB just for having 4 of each driver element instead of 1. And then the wiring on the back mixing parallel and series connections is there to make sure the impedance stays to reasonable levels. The phasing you mentioned nearer the start of the video likely came from interactions between the stacked high frequency drivers. Proreck has no info on their website on the dispersion characteristics of individual boxes, so it's probably safe to say that their hf drivers have a conical or otherwise pretty wide dispersion in all directions. That will lead to a higher degree of interaction between the boxes than true line arrays, which have an extremely narrow (15 degrees or less) vertical dispersion to their hf drivers. So the Proreck boxes will have more audible phasing in the near field near the front of the stage.
That’s a good point! And I didn’t angle these or hang these like a true line array, which is why I threw in that graph on how to set them up correctly. But you can angle them. And yeah, I’ve noticed people are very picky about what “line array” means I’ve found haha. But it does say line array on their website. Even in the “general category” of it 👍
I want to preface my comment by saying I enjoyed the video, and thought you did a decent job reviewing the speaker. I also haven't heard this speaker in person. With that said, I feel like there's a lot of context missing. Specifically, why are you recommending a short line array type speaker? Line arrays require a fairly long line of speakers to effectively shape sound to "throw" farther. If we do the math, this line array is only directive for about 1 octave more than something like a K12. There's also going to be phasing between the elements, which can be prominent without proper R&D. Especially for Bands and DJs on a budget, I would recommend buying versatile, point source boxes so they can also pull monitor duty when needed. And with regards to "throw", the best solution would be to get taller speaker stands. The higher the speakers, the farther they "throw". Which is why you see them flown so high at concerts and festivals. While I am not an audio "expert", I do equally split my time doing sound and as a musician. I also majored in audio engineering, and I deal with both line arrays and point sources every week. However, I want to stress that at the end of the day, the audience experience is the determining factor of a successful gig. Not what speakers were used, or which hi hat mic. It's very easy to get caught up in new trends, new gear, new tech. Even if you are buying brand new, I'm confident you can get equipment that can out-perform this system, will better retain its resale value, and ultimately be a better purchase than this system. Not to mention the hassle of setting your angles and the series parallel stuff (don't want to blow up your speakers!). Bring the right tool for the right job.
Thanks for the comment! I couldn’t agree more. As long as it gets the job done, that’s what counts, and I hope that my video comes off as “this is what it can do… make the decision for yourself.” It does seem like a lot of people disagree on what is considered a “line array,” but overall I wanted to stress the 500 people setup. And you are correct, higher speakers can throw the sound further. And these can go up quite high and can still be angled to get a similar line array shape. But as long as it’s within the 500 people limit, I think these are great. Thanks again for the comment! 🤘
that's pretty damn good for what you're doing. i have a passive system with a dsp in the rack and dual 18" subs, that just allows a little more flexibility than this, plus you can do fancy timed arrays with the subs if you add a couple more. but hey, since the mains are passive that's always an option with this setup too.
As I get older, portability is key for my run and gun gigs, however I could see this working well for a permanent install in a church youth room or as a house system for a small bar/venue. Great review man.
i hear you ...i bought the QSC K12 speakers plus the 12 subs ...oh and i also own the Harbinger msl900 which works great for under 100 people ...downsized
That is kick ass!! The drummer set up is killer!! I have all that same stuff and never thought to set up like that!! Will be doing for our acoustic shows!!
I really dig that white guitar you have hanging on your wall doubt that’s the Gibson Buckethead signature guitar that’s like $13,000 but it looks cool. One other thing if you can get a guitar with an Everton bridge it will change your life no more tuning, no intonation problems it’s magic. You will never go back
I think the best thing out there to capture audio is the Zoom Q8n-4K it has everything don’t listen to anyone else! It has 4K visual and tone capsules with 2 Xlr plugins with headphone jack check it out
People need to realize that with cheap or expensive speaker systems you can always eq a system correctly and get amazing results not to mention adding a sonic maximizer!!!
Nice system for live gigs. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. A little help from an old sound guy… down load a Decibel sound meter with a spectrum analyzer. See what and where your sound is. It really helps when wringing out microphones and speaker placement. Good luck and keep live music happening, it’s your turn and you have great and affordable equipment at your disposal. God Bless. Rock/entertain on. Sincerely, Pops Fitch Post Script: hot weather…….. BIG FANS and ice water……lots of ice water.
Looks like a winner of a system! Hot hot and more hot... We had a bluegrass gig and setup in the morning, by the time we played the sun had moved and our backs were full in it. Completely soaked in midwest heat/humidity and all our acoustic instruments were going crazy (esp fiddles) - re-tuned every song. Would have been just as dry jumping into a lazy river.
Scott I use a Zoom Q2n (with a 32 gb card and external battery pack (USB)) This is on a tall tripod to pick up live performances, the video is decent but it shines with good audio (I did modify a mic foam wind screen to fit and this really helped ).
I recently reviewed the Proreck SP15 and my main complaint was also that the handles hurt your hands when carrying it. There products are not bad for the price for sure! Nice review brother!
I love all your videos! Usually don’t comment but, don’t let negative comments get you down. I think this system would be good on it’s own or used as sound reinforcement for bigger shows. Most bands are doing their own sound for venues up to 500 people or less. The shows of 500 or more usually have a sound system and person handling that for them. This is not a toy and in my opinion better than a sub and a pole, which seems to be popular today. We use EV ELX subs with matching 15s and 12s, which we have spent more than $4500 on. Most of the comments have suggested spending 6000 or more. Most bands can’t buy a 50,000 line array! To many people like to exalt themselves by putting other people down. I really loved all the extra effort you put into this video. Every gig is unique and requires creativity to optimize the sound. Your singer is awesome! Love your videos! I watch every one. Our band is constantly evolving and have really benefited from videos.
Thanks man, I really appreciate this comment. The comment section on this one has been a bit.... annoying lol. That's "sound guys" for you though. And some of them actually came from a place of "hey, good video but let's correct a few things..." But I agree completely. This system worked completely fine at all the shows I played it at... everyone was happy, no one complained about the sound, and they all wanted to have us back. It got the job done, and you are exactly right... it's half the price of my main PA system and half the price of my singers main PA system. I don't know why it's so hard for some people to grasp that. Super strange. Thanks again man, I'm glad to see some common sense in the comment section on this video lol. I appreciate it.
If you’re worried about tone: -Play pink noise through system -Select a channel with a flat mic(I’ve use an sm58 and it’s fine) -use RTA to monitor input from mic at FOH, add/subtract frequencies with a 31band eq until the entire RTA is flat. -Mix band
@@19Jose91 flat, the curve is in the pink noise, you can (and should) always adjust after for taste once the band is going, this method just removes the tone of the cones.
Yes those zoom recorders are great for live recording. My buddy has the H6 and it's night and day to my Samsung galaxy 24 ultra. You can even record direct as there are 4 channels.
Based on your recommendations, we bought the Proreck 6000. Our band regrets it. Zero customer service, terrible chemical smell that forced us to store the powered section outside and harsh highs that are difficult to dial out. Yeah, we saved a ton of money but I think our next system will be an EV Evolve 50.
Bummer, sorry to hear that. The smell of the 6000 definitely wasn’t great. But the system works well. I’m curious what you tried to use it for that didn’t work well. As I mention in my video, you have to get the right speaker for the right job and it worked for my band. But This PR 212T is a much better system. The EV 50s are my main ones and are fantastic for sure! But will be about double the price of this. Just depends on goals and budget. Either way, thanks for commenting 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic For our band it was OK, we just had to re-do our presets for this speaker. When I did the sound for a guest band, they obviously hadn’t done this and even with the mixer’s EQ set to -15dB (the max) it was still shrill for the female vocalist. Good to hear this system is better but maybe you can tell them about never answering customer emails (at least from us). Thanks
@@PedroKing99 You’re not paying attention. There wasn’t enough EQ room to lower the highs any more. I’m playing a large outdoor gig right now and it’s sounding great. 92dB from a 150 feet away. These things are powerful.
I could get my 8,000 ones to sound good maybe did something wrong . When I hooked up kick drum up. It was coming thur tops as well and made the vocals terrible. Sounded like blown speakers. But love the subs.
The iPhone recording was really good. I’ve used video apps that allow some gain control to avoid clipping when close to the stage but that didn’t seem to be a problem here. I’m guessing the newer iPhones have better gain control. I have also tried the little Zoom H2 plugged into my iPhone with a USB to lightning adaptor and it sounded even better. Stereo and no need to sync in post. The algorithm god’s were pleased. BTW, you can get an iPhone holder/handle that has a 1/4 threaded mount on top for the Zoom. Don’t forget the dead cat wind filter.
Nice, glad the iPhone footage worked. I usually film just in my studio room but I’m finding that I’m getting more footage while I’m out. So I’m looking at an upgrade. Thanks for the suggestions!
Great, great, great review Scott. I was waiting for this one to come out and you picked out the pros and cons perfectly. Ideal for what I’m looking for, we are a 4 pc blues band with a harp, drums, guitar and myself on vocals and bass. Stupid question, but I assume plugging my bass amp into the system would be the equivalent of your bass tracks in terms of sound and power ? I’m also assuming you’re using your in ear monitors. The only thing I didn’t care for personally, was the fact that the sub woofer was heavy… on a different note, we played an outside gig in July and it was a 94F day, lots of humidity, felt like 110 F, and there was no room for a tent for shade. Just cooked and soaked. Great crowd, but I wouldn’t play there again if it meant playing in the direct sun. Very uncomfortable. We were promised a tarp for shade/rain protection, but didn’t materialize. Thank you again for your review Scott. Very much appreciated. P.S. I was a DJ for 29 yrs and wish I would’ve had this set up.
Thanks man! And yeah you can run a cab into your mixer and then the speakers for sure! Wouldn’t be a problem. And the heat has just been brutal this year! It’s calmed down a bit, but one night I had to do a wedding that was outside in 100 degrees and showed up early to setup at 3 different stations. I was wiped by the end of it!
Hey Scott. Look into the Zoom Q8n-4k video / audio recorder. I like this one because it has two XLR inputs in addition to built-in mics so you can capture live video and get audio from line outs somewhere in your set up.
Im always skeptical of “cheap”. Speaking from experience, I’ve found that it’s generally more cost-effective to buy a well-appointed quality speaker on the used market. I’ll be honest, I’ve never had any luck with inexpensive speakers…I’ve only ended up replacing them and losing money on the purchase. For the money, my recommendation to bands on a budget would be to look for used QSC K12’s with a KW181 sub for about the same price. You’ll get much better frequency response with a flatter curve than with really inexpensive boxes. You’ll also have a lot more headroom with 6,000W peak / 3,000W RMS.
For sure, I understand. Some people are on a budget, others don’t want to risk it. For what it’s worth, this one is definitely a pretty solid system and I don’t really see it as super cheap. They upped the game with this one compared to the cheaper ones
@@ScottUhlMusic I’ve read reviews on this system and it seems to be “harsh” on the top end with a good deal of comb filtering due to the coverage overlap of the drivers. Did you experience that?
@@riffism I did not. I felt it worked well for my needs. The Club 6000 series by ProReck I thought was a bit bright/harsh… but not this one. I didn’t have any issues with this one
Check out the Tascam Portacapture X8 for recording your shows. It has a ton of features, works great as a room mic, and can record up to 6 tracks. I use it record all of my 2 bands' shows and rehearsals. Plus with the multiple line ins I can record the room as well a DI stereo or mono mix from the board...if the sound guy is open to it. Great stuff as always Scott!
I like the gig shots. Maybe you could do a video on what the music scene is like in Denver.? I have a friend that lives there and I might visit sometime.
Hey, just wanna share my Opinion on this one! I don't wamma say anything angainst the System, and i think it is a overall a good System for small bands. However one thing that may be a problem for Bands that maybe just wanna buy their first Soundsystem, is that the Band will grow i the Future, and so got the Soundsystem, with the System you showed in the Video, upgrading Parts of the System is farely complicated, due to the Amping System. I case the Band or the DJ got the Budget i would Recommend a Passiv or Active point Source speaker with a seperate Subwoofer. I case of a DJ this can actually be helpfull when he wants to play more Outdoor Events, or go in a Environement where he just needs more Bass, so he can simply add more Subs, without having to upgrade the whole System. Another point is that the Subs and the Tops only can be controlled via the dial on the Subwoofer, which ist hard tho reach during a Show. That is something that could be done diferentely with seperate Sub and Tops. Still I think this can be a good Sound System for a few Bands. Thank you for your Review! regards from Germany
Hey Scott, great channel! I've been watching a lot of your videos lately. My bar cover band is upgrading our old passive PA system. Do you think this would be enough for drums, bass, 2 guitars, and 5 vocals for bar gigs?
Not a complete audio pro but having a stereo pair of mics behind the crowd might help get the audio to sound right. Wide as you can get them to have each sides of speakers. Lemme know if it works. Cheers.
How about trying the tops with a separate power amplifier, something light and cheap like a behringer epq304?? You can try that just to have a little more control over what you can send to the subwoofer. You can set it up with something like the presunus StudioLive® Series III 16R Digital Rack Mixer and have a 4 space rack with that in it you can have more control over everything it will be great to have something like that awesome video my man this is one of my favorite channels now
Oh interesting, I would have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion! I honestly have never owned passive speakers so I’m not sure how it works. But thanks for the suggestion and for following the channel 🤘
It's been my experience that you get what you pay for! that said I'm sure it works for what it is and that's great! while it works. If you have a working band that is just starting out it would be good to get as may paying gigs as you can so you can buy a PA that will go the distance, you don't need to have a Line array and quality doesn't have to be expensive either! A lot of times you can find a great deal on a reputable used system, it might still cost you two or three times this rig but thats where you get what you pay for.
Hey Scott, great video! Thank you! What's your thoughts on a setup having two of these, but delaying the second set of line arrays half way down the room or space? I have a probable setup below: FOH Mixer > Crossover (outputs 1 & 2) > Amplifier (for tops) Mixer > Crossover (outputs 5 & 6) > Subs 01 and 02 (inline gradient setup) FOH Delays Mixer > Crossover (outputs 3 & 4) > Second Amplifier (for delayed tops) Do you think this could work? I am assuming the right amplifier with enough ohms and overall power could make this a reality. Let me know!
It would be tough to place the speakers since you have to have them connected to the subwoofer. I guess you could gaff the cables down, but it could work. I personally plan to do that but with my EV50s as the satellite speakers. I’ve had to do that a few times, and I have a wireless for PA systems 👍
hear me out.... 2x Sound Town METIS Series 2400 Watts 18in and 2x Stage Right by Monoprice SRD215 1400W 15in..... about $1,200 you cannot beat that. i have that set up and they are freaking loud....
Been waiting for someone to give this thing a proper rundown! 2 questions: how do the sub lows compare to the other proreck with 2 subs? do the arrays have horns or not? their website says they do on one part and says they don't somewhere else...
Hey Scott. Another great video! Question, for setup and take down, did you disassemble the line array portion each time you gig? Seems like a lot of work to do that. Can you keep them together and just transport gig to gig assembled? What about gig bag for them? Thanks 🙏
Thanks! And good question, no I just kept it all assembled. It’s a bit heavy but way better than dismantling it every show. I would love to get a case for it, the pins that stick out can make it tough to transport, but it’s not awful. But yeah I keep it assembled when going from show to show 👍
Interesting kit, but like you said looks bulky as hell! I run a Bose L1 Pro8 single unit for my Roland V-Drums, which we also use as a stage monitor for the rest of the band as it has 3 individually controllable inputs. Probably not as loud as the stuff you're reviewing, but can still make your ears bleed. Has a really good balanced throw too, with very little, if any, hot-spotting. If you need more volume, then a pair would be great, or the slightly meatier Pro16. Set up in less than a minute, and easy to carry and transport. Of course, somewhat more expensive (bought mine used) but when you listen to it, you'll know where that extra money went ;-)
Yup, my EV 50s are my main system and I love them. But it’s double the price of this system, and the ProReck throws the sound further. As long as you get the right system for you, that’s what counts 🤘 Bose makes some great stuff too!
Wow you get s lot for the price, i would totally buy it is i lived in USA, if i import it to my country I end up paying twice that price, 😣 I would also hire your band for my birthday haha super cool setlist, my worst enemy! Rockstar! All 90s hits! Super cool
I completely forgot that these are only in the USA, and I should have added that to the video! But yeah it would be super expensive to ship I bet. And we do birthdays all the time! And we have our passports 😄🤘
People shouldn't be buying a bottom of the barrel cheap crappy product that bearly qualifies as a line array just for the point of having a line array. Line arrays are designed to be modular to cover larger audiences from front to back in a more linear fashion. Your selling point was that it's "Loud enough" for small crowds. For the money, you could get a couple of decent point source boxes and a pair of matching subs that would be FAR better suited for smaller audiences. Undersized and underpowered line arrays will never beat a decent point source cabinet for your, and probably your impressionable audience's type of work.
@@soundguy01 a lot of people are commenting this. My EV 50s are amazing speakers and I love them. They are 2x the price of this and wouldn’t be able to fill the places that we played for show 3 or 4 like these did. Get the right system for you. This is a good affordable option, and there are more expensive ones and cheaper ones out there 👍
Scott another fantastic gear review video. This system looks almost perfect for what I am looking for. It is hard to tell the sound, not a tone purist but being a rock and hard rock act O am curious what you think about the bass response in the unit for that type of music? I am saving for a new system but I think 18’ subs would be best for what I do. I did like how far it pushed sound that was really great.
Thanks man! And yeah I think this would be a good system. There are some shows I do with Kory where I need to bring two PA systems, one main and then one satellite speakers. For those shows I would bring this and then my ev 50s as my satellite speakers. I haven’t done it with the full band but I couldn’t see it being a problem at all!
Nice video! Not a band guy myself, but…I am looking for a “Budget Friendly system” for the outdoor Movie Theater setup I have. That being said, would you recommend this for that type of setup? Also…because of all the “different” components needed just for movies…what type of mixer should I consider just to manage everything (speakers, dual wireless microphones video sound integration and the ability to include Bluetooth technology for music before and after the flic? Thanks in advance!!!
Interesting, I mean I tried these with Bluetooth and they sounded great, so I would imagine it would sound good for movies. I would be curious how the super low end of like action movies would sound on a sub of this size though, so that might need an upgrade depending on your goals. Digital mixers by Behringer or Presonus or Allen and Heath are great because you can control them from a tablet 🤘
The only problem i found is there is no bass or a full acoustic drum kit to check if it can proyect over the full drumkit + bass, but overall sounds good
Yeah, it worked for me. The bass is in the tracks so the sound is the same as if we have a bass player. But we do have a tiny portable drum kit, so that’s a fair point 👍
Hi Scott! Thanks for this review! One question: What about using this system with drums ( classic kick snare toms etc) and a bass player of course vocals, back tracking and guitar , do you think it would work? I just got the 6000 and honestly I'm keeping it for my acoustic mode But I'm really interested in trying this new one Saludos desde el Paso Tx😅
@@superduderanch thanks! And yeah I think it would work great for that! I didn’t really run into any limitations sound wise with this system. I know we have a smaller trio but you should be able to still do a full band with it 🤘
12:15 . I hate to come off as being negative but I don’t believe these should be recommended. For less than the price of these you can buy a EV ZLX system with 2 tops and a sub. These are advertised as $4,000 speakers at a discount of 42%. Line arrays are meant to have angles for directing sound and these don’t even have a horn with waveguide. This video was put together in an amazing manor and the band sounds great, but I personally as an experienced sound engineer I feel as this is a bad recommendation.
Thanks for commenting and keeping it civil and respectful. I left a pinned comment about how there is a lot of disagreement of what is a “line array.” Even doing more research on the topic I’m finding more and more conflicting info the more I look. These can be angled though, and maybe I should have spent more time on that. Plus the thumbnail doesn’t show that it’s an angle, so I don’t know how many people are just thumbnail commenting (you aren’t, since you left a time stamp, so thank you for not doing that). However, I still stand by the review that these work really well, and I documented how I used them. For the price, they are quite great! I have the EV 50s and love them, but that is double the price of this. My singer had the ZLX with two subs, and it’s about double the price of this as well. There are ALWAYS people looking for more pro expensive gear, and others looking to save money and get something on a budget. This is for the later. Events of 500 people or less, I will continue to use this system. Especially for outdoor stuff like show 3 and 4 in this video. But thanks for sharing your opinion and for commenting. Cheers 🤘
Thanks for the informative content. I have a keyboard which I want to play in a live setup. I have the speakers and mixers, but the audio quality is not par excellence. Do I have to add a passive or active DI Box and a audio interface to the signal path for maximum sound quality? Should I get both or either one? I saw a video of yours on DI box and your suggestion will help me to come up the best output. Please suggest me what should I do. (I'm looking for a minimal, budget friendly setup as I can't afford much.) Thanks in advance. ❤
@@ScottUhlMusic Hey, thank you for the response. Decrease in the audio quality, I mean that the output audio quality from the speakers sounds good at lower volumes. But when I try to increase the volume on my keyboard, amplifier or on the mixing console itself results in a bit distorted sound. Additionally the sound output is not the same most of the times. Could this be due to not using a voltage stabilizer for the console? Apart from a passive DI box, should I consider using audio interface? The music I play is not a one tone, rather I play on a workstation keyboard which gives lots of output at the same time like drums, bass and 5 other instruments tracks played simultaneously. Sorry for too many questions. Hope I can get a solution from you. Thanks.
That makes sense for sure… it’s like how some “column arrays” are advertised as “line arrays.” There seems to be some disagreements for sure. But that makes sense! These are advertised as line arrays and I’ve learned a bit from this. Thanks for being an informative commenter and not a trolly-commenters haha I appreciate it
Hey Scott, I love your videos... Damn this comment section is mixed here. Quick question: compared to a setup with Yamaha DXR12s and a single 15 sub and this setup what would you choose for a 200 person room what would you choose? and would you mix match?
Thanks man! And yeah, this is probably the most mixed comment section I’ve had on a video. Most arguing about what a line array is, and everyone is listing different reasons what a line array is lol. And both of those would be great for sure. The 2x12 sub of this is awkward to carry, so a single 15 sub would be great. I would go with whichever is cheap because both will get the job done for sure 👍 Thanks for following the channel!
@@ScottUhlMusic Got another question or 2 on this. What were you running through, 2 guitars, bass tracks, drums? Have you tried this with your 5 piece band?
Hey @ScottUhlMusic Do you have a an issue running it in stereo? Mono seems to work fine for me but clicking Stereo the left satellite output seems to be having and issue. I flipped XLR inputs and then after the speakon outputs to make sure.
Bose will be much more portable and easy to setup but likely not throw the signal as far. My ev 50 are my main speakers and I love them, but they are double the price, and don’t throw as far. But they sound better and are way more portable and easy to setup. Everything has its pros and cons
I would love to see some rta data on these with just some simple pink noise going through. I also would pove to hear if anybody has tried these with a real crossover and powering the tops seperate?
Good stuff!!! My question is, would this be better than two QSC K10.2 speakers?.....I was thinking about bringing a sound system to Brazil to play outside and eventually use in a club! Thanks for any suggestions! Oh, finally learned the stage traxx app! it's a wonderful app!
Thanks! And QSC makes great speakers, but you won’t have the ability to angle them like these line arrays. So it just depends on what you need for your setup. And glad Stage Traxx is working well for you 🤘🤘 it’s a great app
I feel like these things kinda seem like cheap junk and are bulky and complicated to transport compared to a couple 12" boxes and some 15s or 18s down below, even when compared to more budget-friendly brands like Behringer or Alto, for example, where you can get a lot for $1900. Do you think there's really much of an advantage to a system like this vs that? Just curious about your opinion. Appreciate the content you put out. Cheers.
The subwoofer is bulky for sure, but it packs quite a punch. These will throw the signal further than those imo, as my singer has some 12 EV and Altos, and we use those inside. Especially for outdoors I quite like this system. I don’t think it’s junk at all. Thanks for watching and for commenting 🤘
lol bro you never miss. I was looking at the 6000 / 8000 but might swing these. Only thing i don't like is the singular subwoofer and the stands for the line array system. Do you feel like the stands get in the way? also do you feel like that one subwoofer is enough for 300-500 people?
This one is better than the Club ones for sure. And you can always get two subwoofers and put the speakers on the stands. I do always prefer speakers on a sub when I can, but the stands with these are nice. In the situations that I used it at, the sub was enough. But if you want more, you always can get a second one 🤘
Thanks for the comment. These are quite solid systems, and they do have a lot of good reviews. It just depends on what your goals are for speakers, and many people are on a budget, and these are great for those situations
Hey guys, thanks for watching! There does seem to be a lot of discussion about what counts as a true “line array”. Some people have actually been quite helpful in the comment (it does happen sometimes lol). But overall I just want to clarify a few things:
1) my review of using these for crowds up to 500 people stands true.
3. If you want to find more info about types of speakers including point source and line array, this is a video on another channel that did a great job explaining it:
ruclips.net/video/PTwg61OUvPE/видео.htmlsi=RufJzJVpTwK2EESm
4) I have no problem with learning more and being correcting if I made a mistake in the definition of “line array.” However, in the end, the places we played were very happy with the sound, and all of them wanted us to play again in the future.
I mean in the end you are so right about „get the speakers you think necessary to get the job done“
This goes both ways. If it works, stop complaining. If my speakers are better than what you as a location can provide, stop complaining about me bringing my stuff: my own wedges, my PA if possible/necessary, my mic stands etc. when you as a venue only profit from it by not having to provide anything. I don’t get it…
But stage presence is so much more important than gear🤷🏻♂️
And don’t make the musicians feel bad for bringing their tools necessary to do the job (for example: WHY DO YOU BRING SUCH A FANCY GUITAR AMP?)
This is the reason why so many, even smaller bands, bring their own IEM. And luckily at least IEM is accepted and no one can spread bad vibes for bringing your IEM Rack. (Though personally I’m not a fan of IEM)
I think it has to do with the whole mentality humankind is in at the moment.
Thanks! And yeah, 100% I’m on board with the portability thing too. I try to make things as “simple” as possible now that gets the job done
i hear you ...i bought the QSC K12 speakers plus the 12 subs ...oh and i also own the Harbinger msl900 which works great for under 100 people ...downsized
Again, a very interesting video for not-so-rich musicians... Thank you so much for that, Scott, and best regards from France :)
Thanks John! 🤘
That is kick ass!! The drummer set up is killer!! I have all that same stuff and never thought to set up like that!! Will be doing for our acoustic shows!!
🤘🤘🤘 our drummer has a really cool setup!
I really dig that white guitar you have hanging on your wall doubt that’s the Gibson Buckethead signature guitar that’s like $13,000 but it looks cool. One other thing if you can get a guitar with an Everton bridge it will change your life no more tuning, no intonation problems it’s magic. You will never go back
First time seeing your channel. Looks like you have a fun band, cool dudes. Subbed 👍🏽
Thanks! We have a lot of fun with the band haha
Shoutout your drummer!! Seeing a drummer who sings that well is rare
Yeah, our drummer is awesome! 🤘🤘
Great video, thanks for showing everything we need to know about a system like this!
Thank you! 🙏
Sincerely, Pops Fitch
Post Script: hot weather…….. BIG FANS and ice water……lots of ice water.
Thanks for the comment man! I want to get better footage and sound for videos at live stuff going forward for sure 🤘
Dude! It’s been SOOO hot, but Colorado is dry. I can’t imagine in humidity 🥵
Love the channel dude, glad I found a guy looking out for us looking for the bang for the buck gear
Thank you!
Thanks, Scott. As a fellow musician, I've really enjoyed your channel and reviews since I discovered it several months ago - keep up the good work!
Thank you! 🙏
Thanks Scott. Always on the lookout for something lighter and easier on the back.
Thanks! And this one is definitely not easier on the back haha. Especially that subwoofer.
Great video! Super thorough and I really appreciate that you actually test all of the gear you review at actual gigs and events
Thank you 🙏 And yeah, I always try to use it live before the video comes out to use it in real situations to see how it works 🤘 I appreciate that!
Nice system. Bass seems full and punchy even from a distance👍
Yeah the sub is quite impressive on this!
Scott I use a Zoom Q2n (with a 32 gb card and external battery pack (USB)) This is on a tall tripod to pick up live performances, the video is decent but it shines with good audio (I did modify a mic foam wind screen to fit and this really helped ).
Nice! Thanks for sharing. I might just get the zoom audio recording and still film on the phone
Happy to help! Also - I found my zoom camera unpacking so I’ll bring that for recording :).
You truly are a gem of a human! 🫶🏻
I recently reviewed the Proreck SP15 and my main complaint was also that the handles hurt your hands when carrying it. There products are not bad for the price for sure! Nice review brother!
Yup! Agreed for sure, that’s my least favorite part, no question. Everything else is great!
And some of them actually came from a place of "hey, good video but let's correct a few things..."
But I agree completely.
I appreciate it.
thanks Scott! Hope to get out and hear your band and this PA, and yes, I'm a sound guy, but WONT flip you off😆
@@mypetdrgn 😂😂😂 in my 90s band our singer often will bring his PA, but I do sometimes!
If you’re worried about tone:
-Play pink noise through system
-Select a channel with a flat mic(I’ve use an sm58 and it’s fine)
-use RTA to monitor input from mic at FOH, add/subtract frequencies with a 31band eq until the entire RTA is flat.
-Mix band
flat or same wave?
@@19Jose91 flat, the curve is in the pink noise, you can (and should) always adjust after for taste once the band is going, this method just removes the tone of the cones.
Yes those zoom recorders are great for live recording. My buddy has the H6 and it's night and day to my Samsung galaxy 24 ultra. You can even record direct as there are 4 channels.
Yeah that’s the main one I’m looking at!
@@kevingamble689how do u reccomend the 8000 because I wanna use that for my band too
Thank you Sir
Casters might be an option for the sub.
A singer friend of mine also sung that same Tenacious D song to a girl in the audience at one of his gigs. They've now been married for 12 years!
lol that’s amazing!!
Shout out to Larrisa doing the S.O. work! You guys are always a great team!
Thanks! And yes, massive shout out to Larissa. She is a godsend for our band!
Ok sweet! Thanks for the suggestion. Zoom and tascam seem to be some of the best options 🤘
Them 181’s are my favorite subs by qsc
Great video, thanks Scott!
Thanks Mike! 🤘
I bought it... cant wait to hook it up. Thanks
Nice, enjoy it! 🤘🤘
Ok sweet! I was looking at the Zoom ones but I didn’t even think of the Tascam ones. Thanks for the suggestion!
Awesome vid as always!
Thank you 🙏
I like the gig shots. Maybe you could do a video on what the music scene is like in Denver.?
I have a friend that lives there and I might visit sometime.
Thanks! And denver is quite nice. Not super competitive like Nashville or LA but still a good amount of music that I can make a living doing it
Thanks for the video. Always enjoy
Thanks for always supporting the channel! 🤘
awesome video!! I'm impressed by these speakers..
Thanks! Me too 🤘
Excellent review.
Thank you! 🙏
You did a great review. And your band seems pretty fun.
Thank you 🙏🤘
Hey, just wanna share my Opinion on this one!
RØDE Wireless Go II is excellent for live sound.
Once again, GREAT video! But I gotta know, what kind of fans are those clipped to the mic stand?!
Thanks! And I have no idea, Larissa brings them for us. They are battery powered!
the kazoos are other-worldly! ; )
😅😅😅
How is it with feedback? Are satelites sensitive with condensator mics?
I didn’t use it with condensers so I don’t know. Feedback was not a problem. A tiny bit if the sub was too close, but that’s true with most
Hey Scott, great channel! I've been watching a lot of your videos lately. My bar cover band is upgrading our old passive PA system. Do you think this would be enough for drums, bass, 2 guitars, and 5 vocals for bar gigs?
Thanks! And yes I do 🤘
Not a complete audio pro but having a stereo pair of mics behind the crowd might help get the audio to sound right. Wide as you can get them to have each sides of speakers. Lemme know if it works. Cheers.
Larissa is G! 🤘🏽
🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Scott. I talked to ProReck after your first review and was going to get this unit, however they don't distribute in Canada😢
Ah bummer! I know Europe had trouble getting it but I was hoping they would deliver to North America
Thanks scott, great video. How do you think these would stack up compared to proreck’s club 8000’s?
Thanks, and These are definitely better than the club series! Didn’t have any limitations that I really noticed like I did with the club series
Agreed. You can spend the money for a nice EV system if you have the budget. If you don’t, these are a good option
Love 6he speaker videos
Love the videos, Scott! How are you enjoying the Mooer guitar? Did it hold up through the summer gigs well?
Thanks! And yup, still the main guitar I use! One band I play in plays in drop C and B and that’s the only time I don’t use the Mooer 🤘
Hey Scott, great video! Thank you! What's your thoughts on a setup having two of these, but delaying the second set of line arrays half way down the room or space? I have a probable setup below:
FOH
Mixer > Crossover (outputs 1 & 2) > Amplifier (for tops)
Mixer > Crossover (outputs 5 & 6) > Subs 01 and 02 (inline gradient setup)
FOH Delays
Mixer > Crossover (outputs 3 & 4) > Second Amplifier (for delayed tops)
Do you think this could work? I am assuming the right amplifier with enough ohms and overall power could make this a reality. Let me know!
It would be tough to place the speakers since you have to have them connected to the subwoofer. I guess you could gaff the cables down, but it could work. I personally plan to do that but with my EV50s as the satellite speakers. I’ve had to do that a few times, and I have a wireless for PA systems 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic Okay, awesome. Thanks Scott.
@@ScottUhlMusic Okay, awesome. Thanks Scott.
Ok, this one does sound better than the 6000's!
Definitely 👍 and I go over that in the video
@@ScottUhlMusic Great video by the way! Your band sounds pretty good and it looks like you are having fun 😁
hear me out.... 2x Sound Town METIS Series 2400 Watts 18in and 2x Stage Right by Monoprice SRD215 1400W 15in..... about $1,200 you cannot beat that. i have that set up and they are freaking loud....
Nice! I haven’t heard of those, I’ll have to look into it more
Could you do a review on the 212TS?
Possibly!
Been waiting for someone to give this thing a proper rundown! 2 questions: how do the sub lows compare to the other proreck with 2 subs? do the arrays have horns or not? their website says they do on one part and says they don't somewhere else...
The subs of this one are definitely better imo. And yes I believe they have horns, I could be wrong though
The posts por the subwoofer is included? Another question you tink can be a good idea to buy a nother subwoofer to have one on each side?
The subwoofer is included with this one, and yeah you can buy 2 👍
I want this with two subs for the asthetics
Okay now, The Bee Gees yeah. Y'all sounded real good.
Thanks! We try to do as much variety as possible haha
16:23 I thought that this was going to be the “magic phrase”, and I cannot lie.
😂😂😂
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks I am seriously considering it.
Kazoo Shredder!
Just played and managed an outdoor benefit in the midwestern heat & humidity. So Hot (Paris Hilton). #atleastitdidntrain !! Win! 🎉
I really find this system to be perfect for my needs
Unfortunately it's not easily available in EU.
Ahhh I forgot that these are only available in the USA. Bummer! Hopefully someday they will ship to overseas
Can you review the Harbinger MLS1000.
I haven’t seen that one, so I’ll have to check it out
Hi Scott! Thanks for this review!
One question:
What about using this system with drums ( classic kick snare toms etc) and a bass player of course vocals, back tracking and guitar , do you think it would work?
I just got the 6000 and honestly I'm keeping it for my acoustic mode
But I'm really interested in trying this new one
Saludos desde el Paso Tx😅
Cheers 🤘
Very nice! I wasn’t expecting it to be as heavy as you described but heft equals durability. How did it affect your load in and out?
The subwoofer is a pain to do alone. Everything else is manageable
It depends on what you aren’t happy with the audio quality. That could be many things. But direct boxes definitely can help!
Thanks.
If you can mount your line array boxes onto a tripod stand, you should be using a point source box instead. As simple as that.
You also can hang these and/or angle them still. Whichever fits for you 👍
What you tink about buy two 6000 proreck club systems that can be good to cover good amount of people??
Thanks for all you great content 🙏🏼
Thanks! And I mentioned that specifically in this video that if you ask that (I got that question a lot) to go with the PR 212T instead 👍
The zoom recorder is excellent. The Zoom cameras take amazing audio but the video quality is garbage.
Larissa = sHero! ❤
Absolutely! 💪💪💪
how does this compared to the PRORECK Club series you covered in the other video?
This system is definitely better 👍
How would you compare this system to the 8000 for a rock band, full drum kit, bass, guitars?
Overall this system is much better than the Club series. The club series can still work in the right situations, but this one is much better 🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic I just have a hard time thinking that the double 12 inch sub could be as good as two 18 subs in the 8000. Thanks.
Just for reference, VRX is not a line array but instead is a "constant curvature array"
I flipped XLR inputs and then after the speakon outputs to make sure.
hey Scott how does compare to Dual stick Bose system with subs?
Bose will be much more portable and easy to setup but likely not throw the signal as far. My ev 50 are my main speakers and I love them, but they are double the price, and don’t throw as far. But they sound better and are way more portable and easy to setup. Everything has its pros and cons
Can you connect the speakers to a powered mixer if you do not want to use the sub
I’m not sure. My guess is yes?
I would love to see some rta data on these with just some simple pink noise going through.
I also would pove to hear if anybody has tried these with a real crossover and powering the tops seperate?
Will these work great for Live Hip Hop Shows
You might want a bigger subwoofer for a real thump for hip hop imo
Good stuff!!! My question is, would this be better than two QSC K10.2 speakers?.....I was thinking about bringing a sound system to Brazil to play outside and eventually use in a club! Thanks for any suggestions! Oh, finally learned the stage traxx app! it's a wonderful app!
Thanks! And QSC makes great speakers, but you won’t have the ability to angle them like these line arrays. So it just depends on what you need for your setup. And glad Stage Traxx is working well for you 🤘🤘 it’s a great app
i would 100% go QSC over this, personally.
@@jeffreypcoaltrain uuuummm🤔! Big thanks! I already had one k10.2 and just two weeks ago bought the second!👍🏾😎
What monitoring do you use?
We use in ear monitors 👍
I may have missed it but did you mic all of your drums in your live mix as well?
We do mic the kick and snare, and then the Spdsx has the Toms and electronic samples
@@ScottUhlMusic very cool. Thanks!
Really appreciate your effort, great video.
But are these speakers gonna perform the same in the long term and proreck doesnt have much credibility
Thanks for the comment. These are quite solid systems, and they do have a lot of good reviews. It just depends on what your goals are for speakers, and many people are on a budget, and these are great for those situations
