    It's not that the truck isn't physically capable, it's the combined max weight between the truck and trailer that is legally limiting. Even if you're under weight, it's the potential.

    Thanks Chris for posting. I thought you disappeared also. I saw that video you were talking about and I think what he was getting at was because of the smaller turbo and horsepower rating of the engine, you can't get the towing capacity you can with the higher horsepower trucks. I ordered a 5500HD back in April and hope to get it this fall. I want mine to haul my truck camper. With the setup I have now, I am 2,000 LBS over weight. Thank you for posting from time to time about your truck. I have learned a lot.

    They should make the 1ton with the tilt hood. I like the medium duty accessibility for engine maintenance. Also like the HD of it! ( Just way more than I need). What really scares me is ever needing a tow. Medium duty is where they won't tow with a regular tow truck,(even though it can ) insisting on needing there "big boy" ,at over 2x $$$$! Also considering srw ,to make it even less of a hassle. I want the bigger truck for safety. Yet not at all the extra expenses. Really nice setup!

    But my brother's neighbor's cousin who works at Walmart said you couldn't tow with those trucks! Lol! Chris, you can fix just about anything, but some things... That looked like an awesome trip. When I was growing up we did a lot of tent camping. One place we visited every year was Moose River Plains in the Adirondack Mountains of NY where the campsites were around a mile apart and they locked the gates at dark so nobody in or out at night. Fresh water came from a hose on the side of a mountain...spring fed from somewhere uphill. No horses, but plenty of black bear.

      You can tow 26000 with the 5500 with 350 hp and 700 lb's of torque. The 3500 with 445 and more torque will blow the 5500 away all day long. Bigger number only means more weight that the truck can haul not with a trailer.

    I think you completely misinterpreted the other guy's video. He was hauling a 17k 5th wheel, yours is probably a 8k bumper pull. It was simple math that the fifth wheels weight and the trucks weight exceeded the gross weight. Of course your truck can pull your load and it can probably pull his load but not if you followed the sticker in the door jamb.

    Love this setup. Exactly what we are going for. There’s always nay sayers on the internet. We have a 2012 Silverado 3500 dually with the 6.0 gas. I extended the rear frame rails 2 feet and put a 10 foot flatbed on it that’s 8.5 feet wide. Put a maverick trail and a Polaris sportsman next to each other on the flatbed then bumper pull a 7500lb 31’ travel trailer hitched up to a 2 foot long supertruss hitch extension to clear the longer overhang of the flatbed. Everything Weighs out at just over 18,000 lbs loaded. I manage with my little gasser. If this guy out there says your truck can’t do it I couldn’t imagine what he’d say about ours!
    Looking to upgrade to a 4500 cab and chassis with a 84” CA to eliminated the hitch extension and need for weight distribution.

    Beautiful truck. I watched a video from BTBRV on the 5500 and the salesman said the truck was not designed to be a heavy 5th wheel/conventional trailer puller, hence the lower GCWR. Instead, he said, the truck has an incredibly high cargo capacity for use as a dump truck or heavy specialized utility vehicle. Sure looks like a good puller to me, other than the lack of an exhaust or Jake brake.

    • @chrisward405
      @chrisward405  2 года назад +9

      It has an exhaust brake. The video you mentioned is the video I was referring to. As far as pulling it does a fantastic job. When I purchased this truck I had a fifth wheel camper and had no issues and when I say no issues the fifth wheel camper was 32 feet and behind the fifth wheel I pulled a 16 foot bumper pull flatbed loaded with 100 gallons of fresh water, a 1800 pound industrial generator, and my polaris ranger. This truck has no issues at all for towing in my eyes lol. Thanks for watching the video

    • @tyflesh
      @tyflesh 2 года назад

      @@chrisward405 I seen the same video and told myself no way you can't pull a heavy 5th wheel rv, If you think about it the 3500 dually loaded up is 15-20k more then a 5500 all day... This would be my choice all day, the other thing the salesman said was the the 5500 diesel was derated on hp/tq compared to the 3500, that's the only reason he would say that or get a higher sales commission off the 3500?

    I think I saw the video you’re talking about. They’re talking about the gcwr which in a commercial application is the most that truck with a trailer and load can weigh. It’s not about if the truck can do it, it’s about if the government will let you do it. If a hotshotter got this truck and loaded it up with 40k dot would through the book at them.

    • @chrisward405
      @chrisward405  2 года назад +2

      You can scale these trucks out to almost 40k combination weight now. I see these trucks hauling auto's all the time. As far as DOT goes the look at the gvw of the power unit and the gvw of the trailer. They add those 2 numbers together and that's what the max weight you can haul. The gcwr is a factory recommendation weight. That's why you'll see 1 ton trucks hauling 5 cars at a time.

    As you stated, they would not build a truck you can't tow with. The issue with these trucks is the way the factory rates them for weight ratings. look at the tag in the door to see the axle ratings AND the gross combined weight. The problem is (for example), you install a dump bed on the truck, load it with dirt, now the towing capacity is lower. It is not that you can't tow with them, it is what you can tow legally by axle and combined weight. I am looking to tow with one also, you just have to follow the weight rating to do it legally. Do the research on what you want to tow, its tongue weight and total weight.

      @chrisward405 since I do site prep and excavation and snow plowing, the 4wd was the only truck I was considering. I'm like 90% sure I want it, but not sold yet.
      The truck I'm looking at is a 6500 also.

      @BoostedFA the 4500 through the 6500 trucks are all based off the 6500 trucks. I love mine and I'm very happy with the performance of it.

    I want to buy a trailer for 5 cars and help me choose between dodge ram 5500 and silverado 6500 which can drive a heavy trailer so that there are no problems on the scales on the road with the police

    I came to this video from "that other guy." I'm glad someone is throwing some shade his way. He claims to be an engineer so going on that I know two things about him; he's good at scribbling numbers on paper and he has more money than he knows what to do with. He never impressed me.

    Haha I wouldn't think the 5500 couldn't when the new 2500s could get it done especially without a sxs on the back. Those medium dutys are just rated for a ridiculous payload for dumptruck kinda applications that would blow the tires of a 3500 dually

    • @chrisward405
      @chrisward405  Год назад

      Agreed. I'm still after the last piece of the puzzle for my setup. I plan on buying a jeep that will go on the bed of the truck. When traveling from place to place it'll be nice to have a smaller vehicle to run around in. The wife and I spent 7 weeks in Wyoming this past year with the 5500 and camper. We almost bought a wrangler out there to cruise around in

    • @DownHillgamer
      @DownHillgamer Год назад

      @Chris Ward that would be dope, and couldn't you put the sxs inside the toy hauler? Or is that even a toy hauler, I don't know much about all the different campers and shit they got now

    • @chrisward405
      @chrisward405  Год назад

      @DownHillgamer it's not a toy hauler. We didn't like any of the layouts of the bumper pull toy haulers. We were going for something to live in for several weeks at a time and wanted the best Floorplan for it. We had a 5th wheel before this camper and I used to haul the side x side, generator, and water behind the 5th wheel on a 16 foot trailer. It gave the wife anxiety always thinking about the second trailer behind the camper lol. So that's why I started looking for an option to be able to haul everything on the bed of the truck which ment selling the 5th wheel and buying this truck and a bumper pull camper. While designing this setup we were thinking of what we wanted to do a few years from now and this is what we came up with. We live in Ohio and we eventually want to head south for the winter and having a tow rig that we can take a second vehicle with us as well just makes since... Plus it looks cool going down the road lol
