its songs like these that make me love being a band geek. i hope i get to play this piece one day because quite frankly its nothing short of amazing. i have no words for how incredible this piece is. along with many of his other compositions (the second movement in first suite in e flat is my favorite)
William Mattes The Red Wings theme from FF IV, Actraiser, a lot of metal music. ect. ect. Holst is probably the most influential composer of the 20th century by far.
Super glad I got to play this in high school, it was truly amazing since it was the last concert of the year and we got to show off to the junior high and middle school. It was an honor being able to see the young kids faces when we finished playing. In other words they were blown away. Regardless it will be one of the most memorable things of my life nevertheless.
as a trombonist, I pretty much naturally love all things Holst, Mahler, mussorgsky, and shostakovich and I was so disappointed that I never got to play this in high school. although I did get to play the first and second suites, and I played tuba on shostakovichs festive overture my senior year. still, hopefully I get to play this at some point.
I've played both this arrangement on baritone and the full Planets on cello and I like them both. But I wish I had the chance to play the tenor tuba part on the latter (in an orchestral context, people tend to think of me as a cellist). I think most performances of Mars are too fast. This feels just about right (menacing is what we're looking for).
He also wrote some suite's for the times military band. On the printed sheet music for the wind band transcriptions of the planet's suite, there is no other name than Holst's printed.
@SaxNinj I recently performed Mars for my universities concert band, and when I was discussing the piece with my high school band director, he had told me that Holst had made the arrangements himself. The wikipedia has a very interesting history of the piece but doesn't indicate whether he wrote the concert band arrangement or not. The copy I performed did not credit anyone but holst. I am not certain that this recording is the arrangement made by Holst, as there are many arrangements.
I also thought this piece sounded infinitely better when it was played slow like this. Its supposed to be a march! Visions of an unstoppable legion of soldiers marching into the hellfire of battle, not some freak fest with people scrambling left and right.
My high school marching band played an arrangement of "Mars" for our field show during my first year of band in 8th grade. I was fresh out of Beginning Band and reading 5/4 time. It was a stressful time in my life lol
@spoonyg132 I was under the impression Holst wrote the orchestral suite but didn't know that he arranged it for wind band as well... Can I ask what source you got this info from? Thanks~

7:23 When you remember the thing you forgot as you step onto the bus and then look out the window as you drive away.
I will always picture that when playing or listening to this from now on.
This hit me on a mental level.
The power of this song is unbelievable, and being low brass myself, we rock!
GREAT MUSIC !!! PURE GENIUS !!!!! NOW you know where Star Wars music was inspired from !!
and airship theme from mario bros

This piece is all fun and games until you're the only horn player and you gotta play like 8 horns.
That's before the invaders are nuked and don't die.
Very possible
a tip : watch movies at kaldroStream. Been using it for watching loads of movies lately.
@Graysen Gordon yea, have been watching on kaldroStream for since november myself :D
@Graysen Gordon Definitely, I've been watching on kaldrostream for since november myself :)
DADADA DA DA DADA DA
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, DAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The awesome part is that it sounds like the strings are playing when it's just the winds lol
Well they use snare

I loved when we played this my junior year in high school

300th like. 300 Spartans. Mars, bringer of war. Spartans, people of war. Coincidence? I think not!
More like Mars, bringer of war. Mars, god of war

we did this song for our last concert and it was great but i play flute and hitting the notes for the last part was a challenge and i just joined band
@SaxNinj I believe Holst actually wrote them himself if I am not mistaken, that is why they're so good.
Bass clarinet.
Sophomore year.
Love playing this in band! Solo Bb clarinet

I love the bass line
The amazing part is.... it sounds better without strings.
Drum Corps International is a great example.
I don't agree
this movement, yes
but other movements like jupiter, when you get to the chorale, your just missing that color
@Brian Gentry Careful. Some of us brass players are also string players.
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to respectfully agree to disagree with you

You marched in 5/4? i'm impressed.
and then came the base trombone
i've always wanted to perform this piece in concert band, but my school's band is so small it'd require the effort of every band student.
@spoonyg132 I was under the impression Holst wrote the orchestral suite but didn't know that he arranged it for wind band as well... Can I ask what source you got this info from? Thanks~
All Planets arrangements are made by Merlin Patterson.
No, there is another by Christiaan Janssen, and could possibly be others.
Elise Curran I have directed all planets and this sound are only of merlin Patterson....
What arrangement is this?
oh goodness gracious, you're right. Shudder.
5/4
anybody have any idea who transcribed this for wind orchestra?
Who is the arranger?
@Doppity *BASS trombone (facepalm)
5/4 time... so strange
4:50
Who did make arranging?
I belive it is this: www.jwpepper.com/Mars/150847.item#.V2q0JgF8g-M
Alfred Reed I think
Bravi loro..come al solito...ma il tempo è troppo lento! Diventa pesante e ripetitiva! Ascoltare le versioni orchestrali della London Symphony...
Is it just me or is the 5/2 section much too slow?
Gong is the BEST
When allies were near berlin :v
The slow one.
at least he thought of the right pronunciation
The Blitzkrieg has begun
definitely not star wars
Think of it as an invasion of orcs led by Darth Vader.
