I love how you get aspects of all of the original songs that Holst made. Since, ya know, the songs originated from Earth. This is really good. And it sounds just like actual Holst music
Planet Earth, so underrated that originally Holst didn't include her in the original suite. In our hectic life we perceive the reality like we lived on a piece of "terrain". But in the reality, we are a species kindly hosted on the most precious and important of all planets we do know. I love how the composer mixed different moods and instruments here, and the ending reminds me that as a "thank you" we need to care about our great host and express our gratitude, as in this wonderful piece of music.
Holst didn't write a song for Earth because he didn't feel like he could describe the planet in one song. He wrote songs for the other planets because they were ethereal bodies that were unexplored and mysterious. Earth was known, and not as mysterious, he felt like no matter what he did, people would say "that's not what I think of when I think of Earth!"
When I first saw this, as several others have stated below, I went "Oh no, this is going to be really bad isn't it?". Then to my surprise it turns out to be a wonderful piece of music. You have suceeded at doing something I did not think possible. You have captured the feel of Earth all the while remaining loyal to the style and 'sound' of Holst. If this were inserted into a concert or cd of the Planets and I had never heard it before, I would have been convinced this was Holst.
Gustav Holst would smack himself lightly on the forehead and wonder aloud why he hadn't thought of this first. It is perfect and very much like what he would do.

All seven original planets in the suite are best done by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, but I agree with what you said about Holst's posthumous delight. At a certain point in the beginning of the song it even reminded me of something like anime from the 80's like Gundam or Yamato. Especially in the horn parts that reminded me of that. Its amazing!
Not only that but if Pluto was added to the end, then Earth and Pluto would balance each other with Earth representing birth and Pluto representing death.
I would put it at the end, but I like a satisfying ending and Neptune left me wanting more very badly, however I didn't care for Pluto, just a bit too busy, which is great when trying to communicate "madness" but not quite melodic enough to fit in imho, just a matter of personal taste. This would make a perfect closer as it ties in elements of several other pieces of the suite.
This is a superb addition to the Holstian "Planetary" fold by Clément MEPAS ... so in keeping with Holst's style and use of orchestra. By contrast Colin Matthews' "Pluto - The Renewer" is in my opinion simply unworthy of any association with "The Planets", and I would suggest the field remains open for somebody to compose a truly worthy Holstian piece piece for Pluto! Thinking about it - how unlikely would it have been had the first effort actually worked! Why don't you do it Clément? You've acquitted yourself so well with "Earth - The Bringer Of Life".
Here is my critique of Colin Matthews' "Pluto - The Renewer". To be truly worthy of it's association with Holst's Planets, this final piece surely should have been equally melodic and memorable. In my opinion Colin Matthews' "Pluto - The Renewer", composed as a natural addition to the Holst "Planetary" fold, ironically and sadly remains outside of the fold ... like the planet itself (sadly). Unlike all seven of Holst's planetary pieces, which have drawn me back to listen to time and time again over the decades, this effort by Matthews is so totally unmemorable, lacking musical panache and emotional sophistication, I doubt if I'll be back for a second play.
While I won't comment on the "worthiness" (and probably shouldn't given my lack of real foray into classical music as a genre), you are correct in that in comparison to the other planets, aside from the "jump scare" crescendos, Pluto doesn't really evoke any distinct emotions from me like the others, and is, well, forgettable; while it certainly sounds Holst-ish, it pales in comparison to the rest of the suite. This is not forgettable, it's distinct and moving-- and moves around quite a bit, encapsulating several emotional states; given the nature of earth and how earth is teeming with life and geological events and thus is constantly in flux, this is fitting. A bit more modern sounding, but still obviously an homage to Holst's original suite. But that said, Pluto isn't even a "real planet", so if we were to go by that criteria, the suite is complete 🙂
Finally, a perfect theme for planet Earth that follows William Matthews work for Pluto. The lineup is complete. Too bad I found this only now. I hope the orchestras will include Earth the Bringer of Life and Pluto the Renewer together with Gustav Holtz Planets.

Holst hated to be a populair composer. He never talked about the planets so it isn't clear why he has an other order than the real planets. I think that he used a contrest. Jupiter is in the middle and you have first mars, very loud. At last you have neptune, very soft. So do you have the same thing in venus - uranus and Mercury and Saturn. I think the same thing is in Pluto and your work. Mayby it can be something like Mars, Venus, Mercury, Earth, Jupiter, Pluto, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Terra wasn't included in the original suite because She's not a planet in the Classical sense (a "wandering star") from our perspective as beings dwelling on the surface. Makes me wonder what attributes would be assigned to Terra by astrologists on another planet
Earth. E major. Coincidence? I think NOT!
damnit. beat me to it. lol good job
At first, I was like, Oh no! This is a parody, but now, it’s brilliant! Can you describe it for me please?
Très intéressant.... comme si Holst avait transmis par le moyen d'un médium la partition manquante de son grand chef-d'oeuvre!..... franchement, chapeau.
Good piece. Not quite Holst but, Thankyou.
Is there a transcription of this? Ideally for Piano but anything would do. Thanks

Is there sheet music or a piano transcription of this work, by chance? Would love to learn or transcribe it
Sounds nice
+Jordan Greenspun , Thank you very much
Weren't there various attempts at writing other planets other than those in Holst's original pieces?
@GRANT MAIORANA Pluto doesn't count anymore...again lol
@@WhiteBloggerBlackSpecs it counts, it's not because some people at the top thought it's not a planet that it isn't one anymore!
moreover, it's a dwarf planet, meaning it's still a planet in the eyes of these people, they couldn't even commit fully to banning pluto!(damn I'm doing a bit too far here)
@FrenchHornCat Ceres, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea
Am I the only one that wishes that this was on Spotify?
I love m'y Earth 💖💖💖
virus 8-bit no you do not
great
I’m still waiting on Pluto
One question.... where in the 7 movements would this go?
+PivotCoasterVideos .
No instructions for the place of earth in the suite.
The july 5, 2014 we played earth at the end.
Life and humanity are certainly the last invention of the nature in the story of our height planets, maybe in eighth position it's nice.
The problem is that if you are talking in the real order of the planets then would be pluto at least.
I love you work cause u used very much thinks that Holst used like 2:16 is very much like Saturn Great job!
As an encore.
ThenewBuddyRichATM good point
Probably after Jupiter maybe
This is magnificent. This seems like it would be ideal to play at the crowning of a beauty pageant queen, perhaps.
Thank you Mary
I could do an updated "Rite of Spring Passage" with this piece.
