"Mars" was intended by its composer to be disturbing, and your images of the modern 20th century mechanized warfare that Holst had in mind in 1911 - that would come true just three years later - are spot on.

@@NnenesParadise I would make the argument that "Mars the bringinger of war" may have been one of the most influential music peices of the 20th century. As far as I can tell, it was the first peice to establish the overdriven doom sound that heavy metal is synonymous with. And it definitely inspired the entire heavy metal genre.

If every solar system had a composer who composed music about their own systems, I wonder if they could all be combined together into some sort of giant galactic sound... "The Galaxy"?

    • @sapphoenixthefirebird5063
      @sapphoenixthefirebird5063 2 года назад +26

Not to nitpick, but this is a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation.
Considering Holst's The Planets is about an hour long, and assuming every third star has at least one habitable planet and there is an average of 3 other planets per habitable system, since habitable planets seem to be more common in systems with more planets, and we've only found 11 systems with 6 or more planets, including the Solar System, this would mean the average length of one system's composition is 30 minutes.
Since the Milky Way has about 300 billion stars, based on the assumptions above, there are 100 billion stars with habitable planets. Hence, the total length of the composition "The Galaxy" would be 100 billion x 30 min, or 3 trillion minutes, which is about 5.7 million years. This is so long that this is about the time ago that humans and apes shared a common ancestor.
In case you're wondering, the 11 systems with 6 or more planets are Kepler-11, Kepler-80, Kepler-20, K2-138, TOI-178, HD 34445, HD 219134, HD 10180, TRAPPIST-1, Kepler-90, and the Solar System. Out of these 11, only 6 systems, HD 34445, HD 219134, HD 10180, TRAPPIST-1, Kepler-90, and the Solar System, have habitable terrestrial planets or gas giants in the habitable zone.

@@sapphoenixthefirebird5063I appreciate your calculations, but no, I'm not talking about some sort of "galactic concerto/oratorio"; more like a galactic cacophony/euphony that no human ear could ever hear... everything being played at once, forever... No beginning or end, just one big uncomprensible noise that only a Lovecraftian entity could perceive... The Alpha-Centauri version of "Planets" could take 17,000 Earth-years to perform, but maybe the Alpha-Centaurids take 12,000 Earth-years just to use the toilet, who knows?

I'm very pleased you dedicated the time to utilize your talents in animation to produce this video and then upload it for public to scrutinize and appreciate. While confirming Holst's themes, you brought more than a supplement to his work - you added value - worthy of an artist with a passion for her craft. I'm thrilled by the conceptualizations you've developed here. Your work should be recognized as the avant garde mastery that arises in your desire to create and give others the images to complete the story or connect the dots. I will be trying to watch your career with anticipation, fully expecting your star to rise and shine brilliantly in the artistic firmament. Be blessed. David D.

The animation is superb, especially Saturn, which is the most beautiful, yet frightening part of the whole suite! The part where the bells chime... it makes my skin crawl and somewhat tremble in fear, thinking we all meet this fate sometime. And everytime I listen to that part, John Donne's poem is the first thing that comes into my mind:
    "...send not to know
    For whom the bell tolls,
    It tolls for thee."

I came here because I saw your other post about animating this song. So I came here to take a quick peek at what you had made.
I couldn't find it in myself to leave this video unfinished. It's just such an amazing piece. And your visuals made it all the more enticing. It feels like if Holst had tech similar to today, he wouldn't have been able to make it better himself.
Each planets' representation was spot on, along with perfect timing of visual and music.
I personally favor Jupiter best, but I didn't know if you could pull it off.
But WOW! I did not expect anything like I saw! It was amazing!
You are truly gifted as you handled this with a sense of self interpretation, while staying true to Holsts' original design. I KNOW you are going to do fantastic things with you skills.

I've seen your work today. Very good job, but it could be a little improved (in my opinion).
I don't know what was your screen (projector or plasma displays) but I would make the animation a little bigger. Now is about 25-30% of the screen.
The pause between the parts (change to another planet) is well defined by the composer, so don't need to keep all the animation inside of a circle area, imposed over a planet image. Or make a zoom in (making the animation a little bigger).
Also could be great a transition between the planets like an overview of the Solar System and focusing to the next planet (zooming in) and starting the animation.
Just my opinion, overall a very good job, emotional enough to accompany this music.

saw your post while listening to the suit. What an amazing job you have done! This is very impressive and I can't even imagine how long it took you. I my self have been creating an animation for this but I am using a lot of Star Wars scenes since this was John Williams's inspiration

So sad it is, to me, that Venus - associated over the centuries with beauty, love, and peace (and subject of Holst's achingly lovely music) should have turned out to be a broiling hell-pit suffocating under a smothering greenhouse layer (a fate quite possibly to be shared by Terra, and not so very long away either). 🌚

What an awesome video! I found it looking around youtube while waiting for my own video of this suite to upload. It's nowhere near as good as this one, so there's no point in watching it while this video exists.

If humans dare trample Mars as they trample the magnificently peaceful Earth , it will not go so well for them. Imagine the wars they would have... It would make the greatest wars on earth look like playground squabbles between children. It's easy to do it on earth. Champion of peace. But come try it with the God of War. It will not end the same.

Mars: This is the theme song of WWII. I can imagine hearing the wail of air raid sirens and the whistle of bombs falling.
Venus: When the rainstorm ends, the clouds separate to reveal the Sun
Mercury: Strangely reminds me of Peter Pan
Jupiter: I Vow To Thee My Country, played at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales (RIP)
Saturn: An elegy of mystery and suspense as if one was looking up at the cosmos wondering if we are alone as well as man's fear of the unknown
Uranus: When your party gets out of control
Neptune: A relaxing piece of music

Can I ask why for Jupiter you put an animation of some kind of King or Pharaoh and scenes of 2 general soldiers of Rome and 1 alike Ceasar?
