Not even close to the best; But it's awesome,. There are dozens, hundreds even pieces of jazz , prog, classical instrumentals that make this look pedestrian...A Rush fan 15 years before this album was born...:)
Three virtuoso geniuses at work here ,I'll never forget the first time I heard this back in '79 with headphones on in my bedroom as a kid!!! Im in my 60's now and I'm still amazed everytime I hear it. True masters of their art, the like i doubt we'll ever hear or see again.
God I love these guys. I think I can speak for a lot of my close RUSH friends when I say “they are missed every single day”. Thanks Dirk, Lerxst & Pratt for over 40 years of mind blowing awesomeness. RUSH FOREVER!!!!
The first Alex solo is such a prime example of how he uses space and time to set up the atmosphere of a song. Soul, for sure. :) The song in total is yet another masterpiece among many others. Love it. The smile on your face pretty much says it all. :)
I was asked once by my son whether there was one album, song or piece of music that, if stranded on a desert island, I would want to listen to. I told him that the album would be Hemispheres, and if I were limited to one song it would be "La Villa Strangiato" (though fair consideration would have to be given to "The Trees"). La Villa Strangiato is so rich, dense, technical, and beautiful, evoking so many thoughts and emotions, that I feel it would be most difficult to get tired of it. (Second place: Shostakovich's 11th Symphony; Third Place: Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull; Fourth Place: Aja by Steely Dan.)
This is the best Instrumental by any band around at their time!! They were just genius!! These guys were only in their mid 20’s here and they almost wrote beyond their capabilities! It took 10 days to record this trying to get it in 1 take, admitted defeat and did it in 3 parts! This is one of the few songs where Neil was penned for writing the music! So fun to watch you enjoy this epic piece!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
Hemispheres is still my top Rush album, it was incredible in 1978 and to this day remains so, it took me a long time to put together the guitar parts for La Villa but I did get it down in the end, sadly I had a stroke in 2017 and the fingers can't handle some of Alex's wonderful work anymore.
My personal favorite Rush song, instrumental or lyrical. A prog rock masterpiece!!! And these 3 guys were still in their mid 20s!!! ✌❤❤❤✌ Oh, and Rush is a band that it's near impossible to listen to just 1 song. Listening to an entire album or 3!! Tim!! Ya gotta watch the official promo video for this song that came out in 1978. It's a "live" version!! ✌❤
I still cannot fathom how great this song is all these years after having first heard it in 1978. Great reaction Tim! One of my favorites, audio or live. Check out the definitive live version from Exit Stage Left sometime. Alex's solo in the "A Lerxst in Wonderland" section is otherworldly perfection!
Graduated from high school in "79", yes I'm old, LOL. However, 42 years ago when this was new my buddies and I were listening to this with fosgate boosters, as loud as we could get without distortion. 4wheeling out in the desert late at night with Rush blasting. Life was grand 😁
I appreciate the joy in your face when ANYTHING Rush, touches your soul! Rush is definitely one of my favorite bands of all time! I definitely feel old, but I was lucky enough to be around to hear those songs when they first came out! Thank you!!!
It really just doesn't get any better than this song. Seriously. It is so incredibly sick..... they just effing crushed it. This song never gets old! If this doesn't make anybody realize that Alex is probably the one of the best musicians to ever pick up the instrument then your brain dead! Not just his talent but his composition! And that goes for all three of these guys..... they're just amazing. They'll never be another Rush.
Thanks for reviewing this album and this song in particular! One of the best instrumentals ever! Maybe people are finally realizing how great of band Rush was. The more you listen the better it gets!
My personal favorite RUSH tune! Whenever I get a new sound system whether it's in my house, my car, or at friends house to listen, this is the first song I want to hear on it!!!!
With LVS being my personal favorite Rush song, it’s always a joy to watch people realize how perfect this song really is. Rush always brought the sauce, but never quite like this one! Still the best instrumental I’ve ever heard, IMO.
Such an epic, EPIC instrumental! Still touches me with the same wonder I felt when I first heard it. To hear Alex's solo's...all that I can think of is how that was sitting around in his head, heart and soul and made it's way out in such a unique way. No other guitarist I've ever heard plays like him I feel. One of the absolute greatest ever in my opinion - they all are. Another cool reaction Tim - look forward to the rest!! 😎👍
I consider this their "just showing off" track. Almost as if they're daring anyone to do it better. Alex, Getty and Neil all playing at another level at the same time. Also the progression of the arrangement is just fantastic.💪🔥💪🔥
Yeah this song is another Rush masterpiece. Several solo guitar players have covered this song. Greg Howe(an insanely talented shredder), Steve Morse and I believe Paul Gilbert. All these great players just geek out on Rush and this song in particular. I looked up on wiki and Geddy had this to say about La Villa..(maybe you mention it in your comment video, haven't seen it yet)... "That was a song where I would have to say our ideas exceeded our ability to play them. We thought: 'We're going to write this long piece and then we'll just record it live off the floor and boom!' But it was really difficult. It was beyond us. I included it here because it surprised me how popular that song was among our fans. They just love it when we go into that crazy mode.". Enjoying your reactions man! Have a Rush T-shirt yet?
Alex lifeson is hands down the most underrated guitarist of all time. As a guitarist, he is so good but is under looked with geddy and Neil as his band mates
Give "Leave That Thing Alone" from their 1993 album Counterparts. It is an underated instrumental from them. They also have a fantastic live version in the Time Machine tour.
Geddy said they were determined to record this song in one take. However, it took them 11 days on the bed track alone. He said they had to admit defeat and do it in three parts…only three parts! Wow! Still an incredible feat for this masterpiece. 😎
This is their first instrumental. While they had instrumental passages in other pieces (Overture in 2112), this was the first standalone instrumental. It was a surprise for us back in the late '70s. A bit of flamenco, some jazzy overtones, rock riffs... it was VERY different, and we teenagers had our minds musically expanded upon hearing it.
Personally my favorite version of this song is off their live album exit stage left. It was that version that showed me that Alex deserved his spot between Geddy & Neil.
It's always good to listen to all the versions of La Villa Strangiato. The original album version, the "live" studio video version from long ago, the live performance from "Exit Stage Left" and later live performances....especially the ones that feature Alex's rants!
Tim, PLEASE listen to the version of this song from 5/28/79 Frankfurt, Germany. It is the greatest rendition of this song out of the hundreds of shows I have heard them do this in its' entirety over a 3 tour period (1978-1981). It's easily found on RUclips. This song studio version is so awesome and the live versions blow the studio version away in IMO. So much more SOUL and feeling and ferocity.....much heavier and buffed out, especially at the very end of their 9 month Hemispheres Tour, which this date is. They add effects to the song as well and just play so loudly and ferociously its as you say "Mindblowing". PLEASE!!!! Thanks for the show.......
Love this concept of going through the entire collection. As much as I absolutely love this older stuff, it will be interesting to see your reactions to the later material. Even their final album had some of the most challenging arrangements. They did get better with age so enjoy the ride.
This song live was always incredible, and often hilarious with Alex making some random rant in it. Check out Rush in Rio to hear one of his best during this song. Even Neil was laughing through it 😂😂
As an old guy now, I have more and more difficulty trying to make younger generations understand the context of "songs in order", lol. Among my peers, we HATED and couldn't fathom why makers of CD's would often jumble the tracks out of sequence, when reproducing a vinyl album. Not only is it just jarring to be expecting a low tempo ballad, and getting sent out of your chair with an explosive drum heavy one instead, but many songs used to literally merge right into the next song, giving a deliberate continuity of the band's intended vision.
I just searched your other channel for your original reaction to this song. You reacted to the official video, which in itself is great as it's live. No overdubs. Also, pretty much note for note to the studio version.
If.you want to watch an AMAZING, BLOW YOUR MIND video of La Villa then you ABSOLUTELY MUST look up Rush at Pinkpop 1979. It is just incredible how they performed it. Trust me please you'll Thank me..

The best version of LA Villa Strangiato is on the live album Exit Stzge Left has a way better guitar solo.. make sure you listen to this version. You'll understand!!
This song almost broke the band because they wanted to record it in one take. This was one of the main reasons that they started to change their songwriting to get away from the epics.
Pronounce it however you want, it won’t change the fact that this is probably the best instrumental piece ever recorded!!!
Totally agree.
I love watching Tim discover what we have known for over 40 years.
'Probably' ? Definitely 😁
I really liked The Main Monkey Business better, personally.
