    I got my M2Max 38 GPU / 96G on friday and spent the weekend testing it for ML workloads. I'm psyched with what I see so far. The scaling of the GPU is better than M1Max and CreateML will use 80G of memory to train object detection model! Once Apple updates CreateML to use ANE, it should be even better for doing ML research and experiments. Definitely way cheaper than buying 2 Nvidia Tesla A100 40G which go for $9,500 each. To build a comparable windows workstation that can train models that need 80G you'd have to spend 20K.

    • @juanodonnell
      @juanodonnell Год назад +1

      how much would that cost running on cloud?

    • @woolfel
      @woolfel Год назад +4

      @@juanodonnell good question. I haven't kept up with the cost of A100 on AWS or Azure. A quick look on Azure and it's $27.00/hr for ND A100 series. That means after 167 hours, you'd pay for the cost of a M2Max macbook. That's roughly 7 days of training. AWS us-east 32/hr for A100 VM, so it's a bit more expensive for on-demand.
      My kid works as a ML engineer and each person has a A100 for training language models. The amount of training they do is a couple thousand per person /month. That is pretty typical of companies doing ML development.

    Nice, but I'd love to see the battery usage results too. A big chunk of the M2 speed increase was due to bumping up the raw clock speed, which of course increases speed, power usage, temperature, and thus battery usage. I buy my MBP for its portability, and battery life is a huge factor. So I'm curious, the M2 is faster to finish the task, but draws more power while completing the task, so which used the most overall battery drain? I suspect the M2 actually wins on this too, as some of the speed improvements are NOT due to increased clock speed. I'd love to know for sure though.

    Hi from Spain! I really like your videos, I would like to suggest two interesting possible future videos, one is a comparation in build times every time you do a code change in a fullstack develepment, having localy the frontend, backend and database (for example using react, express and postgreSQL). The other idea is to do a direct comparation between 14 and 16 inchs with the exact same chip configuration and see a batery test, to determine if that's a significant point to take into account when buying. Thanks!

    It'd be interesting to see an overclocked M1 with similar power/thermal tolerances to what's allowed for the M2. Obviously the M2 is incrementally "faster", but how much of that is that is due to the architecture, vs how much is due to simply brute force with allowing more power/heat to push the processor harder?

    Hi Alex, here in Poland, prices for the M1 Max went down about 20-30% as soon new models were released. So, with the same price you get a M2 Pro 1TB 32GB, you can get the same M1 Max, but M1 provides 32 GPU cores instead of 19 GPU in the M2 Pro.
    I saw other GPU tests (I kind of a gamer as well), and I decided to get the M1 Max: same price as the M2 Pro, but better for gaming.

    Well, for those folks out there that also game. The new 16" M2 Pro Max 32 gb, 1 TB runs World of Warcraft at "highest" -> 120 FPS rock solid, Elder Scrolls Online > 100 FPS. I have yet to try Warhammer III etc. Now that being said .. if you want to test fans, this is the way to go .. 747 take-off anyone .. just kidding but you will hear them! So I no longer absolutely need a gaming PC for the stuff I play the most. The economics are suspect, but might be closer than expected. (of coarse raytracing and a few other features would be absent VRR etc) . Early days but a promising start.

    This is bunk, memory speed on the M2 Pro is HALF the speed of the M1 Max (200 Gb/sec vs 400 Gb/sec). Also, the extra two cores on the M2 Pro cpu are low-performance "efficiency" cores which matter only in cases where a huge amount of multi-tasking is required. Both M2 Pro and M1 Max chips have 8 high-performance cores, which is what really counts in video and multi-channel audio performance (M3 Pro has only 6 high-performance cores and even lower memory speed). And for A/V apps, 32GB RAM is way better than 16GB.

    I just bought a 16" Macbook M1Max 10C CPU & 32C GPU and 16-Kern-Neural-Engine with 64 GB Memory for the price of an M2pro with 12‑Core CPU, 19‑Core GPU, 16‑Core Neural Engine with 16GB memory, so I think I got a pretty good deal. More GPU power, 4 time as much memory, more memory bandwith , on the other hand, less CPU and Neural engine power

    I may have to get an M1 Pro cause my MacBook Air M1 has been hanging up and just freezing out. So bad I end up having to hold the power button. And I just stream video and audio 😓
    I saved and bought it hoping it would last me a decade and I’m only three years in.. a bummer. When it works though.. it works great.

    Great news! Despite the usual negative vibe from creators in the usual quarters, the M2 for developers looks like a better choice than upgrading to an M1 refurb or new (if you can find them) coming from ancient Intel Macs. That goes against the general recommendation from influencers, but most tests I have seen show that the M2 is better and therefore is a no-brainer if performance is your main metric. Obviously, if like me, I am not a developer, I come here for the excellent content, performance is not the main driver for purchase, I just want the bells and whistles, then saving money and getting the M1 is a good option.

    Any chance you could do a video on connecting to an Oracle DB? I've tried using Rosetta to get the Node packages to install, and I tried getting Flask and FastAPI working to have a Python backend. I didn't try Django. I'm not very strong on Python and was advised there was a steep learning curve. I tried asking those a**holes on stack overflow but you can easily fill in the blanks on how that went. Seems there's not a lot Apple Silicon Mac users that need to work with an Oracle DB. Luckily I have a solid Windows machine too but very much prefer to work on my Mac.
