I met Eddie in 1994 while playing a live radio broadcast from the Power Station studio in Rochester N.Y. It was a honor and I being a drummer he told me, "Bang on those fucking drums!". I got to meet Eddie Kramer!! Weee!!
There's no substitute for figuring most of the session out in the pre-production stage. There are A LOT of options for the engineer (recording and mix) in the digital domain!
yeah,he's absolutely right the choice is the hard part ... different mikes, guitars, instruments,eq before or after.. thats the part that can make recording hard but also very interresting cause many ways lead to rome..
Just a slight factual aside: At the opening, it presents Eddie as "the... producer of Hendrix and Led Zeppelin," which isn't actually the case. While he did co-produce a few of Hendrix's posthumous releases, it was Chas Chandler who produced the first two 'Experience' albums, with Jimi taking over on Band of Gypsys and Electric Ladyland, Kramer serving the role of engineer. The same being true for Led Zeppelin's catalogue, all of which was produced by Jimmy Page.
Yeah, yeah blah blah blah... but what has this guy ever done really? Seriously though: EK is a virtual walking history of 60-90's rock with sage studio wisdom, it is very cool he likes to share!.
@EarthFMEnterprises Big mouse:) Well, if he is really resigning to mixing in pro tools as so many are, thats deffinately the mouse you want. I actually prefer the layout of the D command but I may only hope to afford the C24. I still cant justify the 20k difference.. at least for my budget.
Why? Why? How bout Led Zeppelin? Jimi Hendrix? The Stones? David Bowie? Anthrax? Traffic? Buddy Guy? Led Zeppelin? Jimi Hendrix? Zeppelin? Zeppelin? Hendrix? Need I say more?
Nice touch having his voice routed through all the gear behind and the meters bouncing away as he talked :)
What can you do with EQ, compression, reverb, and only four tracks? They made classics! Valuable lesson.

it's such a relief to go 4-track. i just switched from cubase to portastudio.
What a classic... theres not many of these guys still around. They should be praised for making such history.

Very well explained! I totallt agree with there being way to many options these days. Need to go back to the basics of it.
Trust! This is what I have for Eddie.

the definition of a producer changed a bit through the years, I think, but yes, he was an engineer
He produced ABAL for Jimi also

I've always found Eddies opinions on bounces interesting. Having to commit to an idea and see it through to the bitter end.

but in some cases you don´t have time or cash to pre-production stage. especially if is an artist not a band creating music.
