Before you guys go trying to clown this guy, the most genius artistic people usually aren't great at speaking. They moreso visualize what they're saying... but it's hard to put words to it. It's like asking somebody to explain "What does color look like?". So yeah... I appreciate this guy sharing some of his tips!
Guys, this is very important. Manny generally don't do recalls, he knows what the client is looking for! When you receive a song for mixing, is very important to listen to their rought mix (especially if you was hired just for mixing)... They want you to improve their work, not change everything in terms of balance, but put everything what their had in mind. This lesson if applied with expertise, will give you a lot of work!
@dairniel That's the beauty of a great mix: a great talented engineer allows the song to sing itself. A non-schooled ear doesn't have to recognize all of this to appreciate it; but you can bet a person will notice a mix they don't like!
@ShortScopeBoy Well on of the great things about technology is that this guy was smart enough to upload the vid so that i could be viewed in HD, which equals better vid AND audio quality! We hear the music! Don't ever Stop!
Man I have to keep watching this over and over and over just to comprehend what he's saying... Manny Marroquin is one of the best out there, but man I keep spacing out trying to listen to this haha
Glad to see that Waves understand that you can't beat outboard gear for mixing and mastering and don't edit out the parts where he's explaining what he used even though most of it wasn't Waves software plugins. Like most companies would do to trick naive people into think that their software is "all you need to make a hit record".
@matrixmusic Well. Those stems aren't processed with any effects. So they are raw tracks exported by the song writer. MM has to EQ, clear frequencies, and do everything. That's his job. I don't think you understand what mixing is.
I love waves plugins have used them for years ,I just think its kinda funny how in a waves video he spends a lot more time talking about the hard wear he uses other than the plugins ...
My music doesn't sound bad but what it differs from allot of professionals are the tracks being used I mainly use like max 20 tracks in my songs but pro's use like 80 I guess i'm just lazy, how would you equalize compress like 80 different sounds I know with busses but still
@ShortScopeBoy thats really true man.... I just completed a mix...and I know it will be heard on mp3 formats and soundcloud.... and what not... crappy headphones... but thats why you must mix for those standards too...
wow !! he didnt tell anything actually , just named a couple of plugins and thats all !! i thought i was gonna hear some mixing happening !! or some cool tips...
@Phattazzass The secret weapons of today are the plugins>most some have Hardware counterparts, and they sound almost identical. Waves are my choice of plugins>but I mix 100% in the box>every mix>no Hardware at all>There are tricks and techniques you can use to achieve that analogue sound.
so thats who Manny Marroquin is :D! Cool! Everyone's saying it's hard to understand you but I get you perfectly. I guess I'm used to listening to Mexicans speaking English all the time
@mirandansa And that's why people should boy the CD with all the 16 bits of final quality, and the rest of the art hat comes in the case, cause it is all a full concept, not just music.
Totally agree with this statement, and also, don't you think the guy that mixed a multi-platinum song deserves a little credit? He makes more money than I do in this industry, if someone wants to call bullshit than prove me wrong and win a grammy for best engineered using whatever technique you feel gives a better sound.
multi platinum. man i bet that ould look good next to my name lolol. but yo how can i tell by ear if my low frequencies are fighting each other? i want to avoid clipping and muddy mixes. spectral analyzing is not my strong point. yet.
Brian Coultre cause he obviously used the pps470 HD with the high offset on the mic instead of the 1866 vst with the dtt that runs through the pj AND the tubular cowbell...that way you get more fat sound instead of the 4589/El.Knee setup...like...duh man...duh!
It makes me curious to see what the future holds for computer recording, because the only reason Pro Tools became standard was due to non-host based mix and effects processing. Thus allowing much higher track and effect count. Now as computer technology goes over the top I wonder if DSP processing may eventually become obsolete, as nuts as that might sound. I simply hate the overpriced monopoly pro tools has created.
yeah but is understandable, do you know how many things he had on his mind? well if i think Umbrella, i know is gonna get complicated to explain the mixing process, so many details dont you think?
Dang... this vid is a constant reminder on what you really need, to become a semi-pro producer (not composer) because.... i could at least understand everything he said.
ok i have no idea what he is talking about...i ended up using a lot of kneeves, on the 9.2, fazing on the 20.44s, parallel on the buzz fader to spring the source on the depth return ...WTF!!!!
pro tools pwnz steinberg stuff. unless you're into post or wanna rock a better interface for the money. and i'm surprised to see all the clip lights on in his mix. i though i was rockin hard gettin the occasional clip off kick and snare
Yes, like someone else said..." its hard to understand you. I understand your word's perfectly but while listening, the thing is, is that you don't know if you're trying to give viewer's some tip's to go by or just bosting. Like in a song... your point is more relevant, the quicker you get to it.. the better. Very not what most think it is.
@dairniel True. Most people hear the "beat" and vocals and couldn't care less about everything else. Now, when you listen to the kind of music that I do; I don't want to settle for crap.
Looks like this mixer isn't against loudness wars. All the tracks look squashed to hell, no wonder this song is very fatiguing to listen, I had to put the volume of my speakers almost to a minimum.
Don't be fooled... Out-board gear still builds outstanding tracks. Plug-ins are cool, however... Analog still makes a big difference. Big Mike MoonGate Studios
all i got from this video , and from Manny Marroquin is : "... well I got all the synth's etc trough API and Neve and a lot of fancy equipment ..." lol sos you want your music sound so alive with sonic resonance etc... use good equipment ... well dahhh :) good video dough
he did tell you how he did it. he told you what gear or software he used and basically for what reason. we'd be here all day if he went into detail about each track.
Great technical work and interesting to me, a music production hobbyist. But ShortScopeBoy is amazingly correct. In this day and age not only will the listeners never hear it on anything that reveals its beauty, but those of us (myself included) with fantastic audio systems will never BUY or LISTEN TO this artist. After seeing that she put out a sex video, all this is quite sure.
watching this in 2023 is crazy how old everything looks, the cameras, the protools interface. only like 15 years ago
6:12 Camera man- “Oh, there’s that damn zoom button, welp... might as well use it” !!!!!!!!
😭😭😭😭
Before you guys go trying to clown this guy, the most genius artistic people usually aren't great at speaking. They moreso visualize what they're saying... but it's hard to put words to it. It's like asking somebody to explain "What does color look like?".
So yeah... I appreciate this guy sharing some of his tips!
I think there’s a ton of great info here...not “do this, turn that” style, but really great info from a master mixer !!!
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge! I wish more producers were willing to share like this guy. Thanks again!
People don't realize that mixing engineers and all others involved on making an album are just as much artists as the performer.
Hands down. Manny is a genius!
Agreed, I think unless your heavy into engineering/mixing hes gonna be...I'm not. I just wanna learn a few things to better mix my own tracks.
@dvanasek No there the 2044 is a compressor the 2055 is the EQ. He was talking about compression.
Came back after 6 years
Man I have to keep watching this over and over and over just to comprehend what he's saying... Manny Marroquin is one of the best out there, but man I keep spacing out trying to listen to this haha
Same here. Very technical
Glad to see that Waves understand that you can't beat outboard gear for mixing and mastering and don't edit out the parts where he's explaining what he used even though most of it wasn't Waves software plugins. Like most companies would do to trick naive people into think that their software is "all you need to make a hit record".
That's why Waves is known for its "classic" gear reproductions.
and of course its actual hardware I guess. I should of known there would be an ulterior motive ;)
Yeah sure!
nice work he's a genius
@matrixmusic Well. Those stems aren't processed with any effects. So they are raw tracks exported by the song writer. MM has to EQ, clear frequencies, and do everything. That's his job. I don't think you understand what mixing is.
Hahaha 1:40 "All of that was Neve" *pulls up Renaissance eq plug*
+John Vallentine ya with hardly an EQ on it... he's not kidding it was heavily EQd on the neves and SSL.
+John Vallentine he is talking hardwere neve and ssl channelstrtips that you can see taken out of old boards and put on the rack behind him
+John Vallentine he ran it thru the Neve Hardware
Where do u think these plugins come from? Lol from HARDWARE and these guys obviously use the hardware.
I love waves plugins have used them for years ,I just think its kinda funny how in a waves video he spends a lot more time talking about the hard wear he uses other than the plugins ...
@ShortScopeBoy Hi Jimmy Iovine. Nice of you to join this channel!!!
My music doesn't sound bad but what it differs from allot of professionals are the tracks being used I mainly use like max 20 tracks in my songs but pro's use like 80 I guess i'm just lazy, how would you equalize compress like 80 different sounds I know with busses but still

wow !! he didnt tell anything actually , just named a couple of plugins and thats all !! i thought i was gonna hear some mixing happening !! or some cool tips...
+Aditya Aggarwal haha right just listed a bunch of hardware i dont have
+the factis Right on
The only tip really was the doubler tip. I hate videos like these. We get it, waves makes good plugins.
hes not gonna give away his secrets
exactly, this is very simple, you need to sit 12 hours a day to reach those tips and no one is gonna give you the shortcut
I liked the parl cmprs eq technique
just tested it out, cool thing!
@Phattazzass The secret weapons of today are the plugins>most some have Hardware counterparts, and they sound almost identical. Waves are my choice of plugins>but I mix 100% in the box>every mix>no Hardware at all>There are tricks and techniques you can use to achieve that analogue sound.
how can someone use the word 'warm' in context with the 80ies ???? unbelievable.
so thats who Manny Marroquin is :D! Cool! Everyone's saying it's hard to understand you but I get you perfectly. I guess I'm used to listening to Mexicans speaking English all the time
+mario Cazares He's not Mexican. He's Guatemalan.
I understand him as well...I think he barely has a Latin accent...
@ShortScopeBoy good point, but a good mixing engineer gets a mix knowing those exact things.
good man i like the piano part, some people is afraid of using 12 db EQ great video
@mirandansa And that's why people should boy the CD with all the 16 bits of final quality, and the rest of the art hat comes in the case, cause it is all a full concept, not just music.
"So, that was Umbrella..."
No instruments were harmed during the making of this song.
Totally agree with this statement, and also, don't you think the guy that mixed a multi-platinum song deserves a little credit? He makes more money than I do in this industry, if someone wants to call bullshit than prove me wrong and win a grammy for best engineered using whatever technique you feel gives a better sound.
Yo nice work man!!!!!! Lovin da board!
Man, this dude takes a while to get his ideas out.
multi platinum. man i bet that ould look good next to my name lolol. but yo how can i tell by ear if my low frequencies are fighting each other? i want to avoid clipping and muddy mixes. spectral analyzing is not my strong point. yet.
uh dont know what you guys are talking about... i definitely took a lot of great ideas from this.
why didnt u use the 1645's with the 7780 or the dt with the pj and the 4589's and the elbows and knees ?
Brian Coultre cause he obviously used the pps470 HD with the high offset on the mic instead of the 1866 vst with the dtt that runs through the pj AND the tubular cowbell...that way you get more fat sound instead of the 4589/El.Knee setup...like...duh man...duh!
+gn consider yourself trolled. sir.
Love these videos! When he says 'board' EQ, does he mean outboard gear?
+James Saint he means the EQ on the mixing desk.
Nice. Protools, Waves, Neve, Lexicon, etc. I can digg this setup!
yeah is a standard , but some good engineers , like cubase and they obtein good results with it
Wow This guy knows wat's up man.
@3:51- I believe he meant to say avalon 2055
DO PEOPLE JUST DISLIKE JUST TO DISLIKE?!
@theguyi26 Actually you are seeing the Backup file, lol
@mitwinx Yeah, we kind of know that!
How'd you feel about this 11 years on? :)
this is gold.
yeah but is understandable, do you know how many things he had on his mind? well if i think Umbrella, i know is gonna get complicated to explain the mixing process, so many details dont you think?
was it recorded after 4:20 ?
he's a genius
de-ess the videos please
very interesting
Dang... this vid is a constant reminder on what you really need, to become a semi-pro producer (not composer) because.... i could at least understand everything he said.
How do you feel about it now?
ok i have no idea what he is talking about...i ended up using a lot of kneeves, on the 9.2, fazing on the 20.44s, parallel on the buzz fader to spring the source on the depth return ...WTF!!!!
shilo storm lol
😂😂😂🤦♂
The piano sounds very Disco-Funk 70's pianos. :-)
Nice Video. Thank you!
what DAW system is he using? that doesn't look like pro tools
lol it says Pro Tools 7.3.1 in the top left corner
what kind of mac keyboard is that ?
haha its the G4 one
old lol
Which Is the Best DAW for Mastering...
fruity loops :) :p
Audacity for sure.
Any DAw
@ShortScopeBoy thats something they adapt to as well :) hey, gotta give sum to the mastering engineers as well hahaah
good that he said the drums are a sample,Apple Loops anyone?
thissss ssssentence.... took..... a.... lot of.....thoughtssssss
very nice two thumbs up!!!!!
pro tools pwnz steinberg stuff. unless you're into post or wanna rock a better interface for the money. and i'm surprised to see all the clip lights on in his mix. i though i was rockin hard gettin the occasional clip off kick and snare
@ShortScopeBoy instead of complaining why dont you do something about it? people just are not educated.
I never heard the piano xD
@dairniel True. Most people hear the "beat" and vocals and couldn't care less about everything else. Now, when you listen to the kind of music that I do; I don't want to settle for crap.
Contradiction is key.
Why you sound like Rick Sanchez? Nice vídeo
For this bit in the song i use the boodiddle47 cos it gives a silky attack...
REAPER!
*dude's a mixing engineer.. yes, there's a difference!
neve neve neve
Nice. He looks high lol
oh, talking about gears and stuff. that was it! wtfreak
Sure he got all the nice Hardware EQ´s from Neve, SSL etc. and then he uses PlugIns. No way I believe that.
@monxcrib lolol them head phones are so overpriced
The piano sounds too much like a keyboard for me. If it was a real piano, his effect would be real good.
Looks like this mixer isn't against loudness wars.
All the tracks look squashed to hell, no wonder this song is very fatiguing to listen, I had to put the volume of my speakers almost to a minimum.
...
Don't be fooled... Out-board gear still builds outstanding tracks. Plug-ins are cool, however... Analog still makes a big difference.
Big Mike
MoonGate Studios
Lol...😂😂
all i got from this video , and from Manny Marroquin is :
"... well I got all the synth's etc trough API and Neve and a lot of fancy equipment ..." lol
sos you want your music sound so alive with sonic resonance etc... use good equipment ... well dahhh
:) good video dough
Doesn't your music sound better when someone spends a lot of money on it!
I'm not a hater, but to me, he talked, and said nothing! I came away bereft!
disagree!
Wtf I don't understand hardly any of this
@jrocsniper76 LOL people have made millions off of using just FL studio. whos to say whats for beginners?? lol
This guy seems not too articulate. Good mixer though, that's what matters.
More music and less talking next time....geezz
if you want to hear the music go to iTunes its on there. We're here to listen to what he has to say
djtim06 we're here to listen to how he mixed it, that's both talking and playing some tracks on how he did it
he did tell you how he did it. he told you what gear or software he used and basically for what reason. we'd be here all day if he went into detail about each track.
I little bit of both telling and playing the parts is what I'm saying.
i think he did enough of both for me anyway but hey
Never reveal your secret recipes for mixing!!
Wonder how many drugs he's on during the filming process of this video 🤣🤣🤣
Well kinda nothing new
blablabla...
yea.. it sounds like he has the slightest block in some receptor in his brain. it's not an uncommon condition, but it's kinda wierd when you find one.
this dude is definitely high...
Analog still sounds better than digital...I'm sorry.
