When holidaying in Florida my nephew, aware of my fear of sharks, told me "You are more likely to be killed by a kick from a horse than be killed by a shark. My answer was "Not when you are swimming in the Ocean you're not".

The attacks in the shallows are particularly fascinating to me because of the false sense of security created by the shallow depth and proximity to the beach.

This is one of the cases that gives me the worst chills. I read a witness statement that said they saw the huge shadow approaching him slowly. They said he was putting on his swim goggles in chin deep water, and it grabbed him. They said they saw his leg and arm bent at a weird angle ( waving around) slowly be taken under the surface. I have no desire to ever swim in the ocean or river again. I am a fisherman and a hunter, but I will not be getting in the water to fish. At least in the wilderness I can hear and see what is coming around me. I also have a long gun and a handgun on me at all times. When you deal with a huge shark or croc in the water, you are out of your element. Being eaten alive while drowning at the same time is about as terrifying as it can get. I also believe that the shark was much bigger than what Hal said. I am not saying he is wrong. He is going off of witness statements like myself…I guess. I just heard multiple witness statements say that it was extremely huge and around 20 feet.

      @roxannespahr2804 Год назад +29

That's what I say, atleast when out hunting I can get distance, or fight back, if needed. You really can't do a damn thing in the water against a giant fish with knives for teeth. While being dragged under the water at the same time...trying not to drown. Noooope no ocean for me. Not all sharks attack humans but there's always ones that do and there's no way to predict when, where or why. And in most cases, the victim cannot even see it coming. I won't risk my life for that kind of death. I've been in a car accident and it's like time slows down to where seconds seem so long, you have so many realizations and thoughts go through your head in just seconds and I can imagine the same happens in a life or death situation such as with these shark attacks. That is not the way I want to leave this planet. Drowning and being eaten alive, at the same time, would be my worst nightmare as well.

I think It's hard for anyone to estimate the size of anything in the ocean as there's nothing really to gauge off unless there's a boat next to the shark and the size of the boat is known. Another thing is most people haven't even seen a small shark so if the first shark they see a 15ft White then that would look gigantic to them no doubt.

Both my life coach and my shrink assure me that I would prevail if forced to wrestle or duke it out with either crocs or sharks, provided that I simply visualize a favorable outcome right from the onset of such primal contests.
Accordingly, I tend to approach both varieties of toothy beasts with an air of aggressive panache when in their habitats while taking care not to display any signs of fear or insecurity. There is no cause for alarm. The general public may go about its business without any undue panic. All is well at sea and on land at this time.

We recently had a fatal Bull Shark attack in Perth, Western Australia in the Swan River. First fatal attack in our rivers in around 100 years. Was a 16 year old girl swimming about 100 metres from shore, lots of onlookers including her boyfriend and friends. A man witnessed it happening from his apartment nearby and swam out to rescue her, although unfortunately she drowned during the struggle. Amazing courage on his part, a true hero in my eyes.

Rest In Eternal Peace, Gary Rossington. Lynyrd Skynyrd is from Jacksonville, Florida. The bird sounds he made, with his slide, on his red Gibson SG guitar, in the song, Freebird, are amazing. Just an all around amazing guitar players. Great Video, Hal. Better them than me, with that monstrous shark.

I’m a skydiver and a scuba diver. I’ve dived in many of the world's oceans, including the Red Sea, Great Barrier Reef , Mediterranean and Caribbean and I’ve swum with sharks. I’ve done plenty of snorkeling, and I even went cage diving in False Bay, South Africa, just to observe these incredible animals. In other words, I’m not risk-averse-but I wouldn’t dream of swimming in these waters! The idea of swimming in False Bay, knowing it’s full of great whites, or in Australian waters? Absolutely not! Scuba diving minimizes the risk, but splashing around on the surface in shark-infested waters is just madness! I can’t understand it.

Normally I don't like going in the ocean. But last time I went to the shore with my daughter and wife. They wanted me to go, so I went in with them. My dumbass ends up going out there and before I realized it I was about 20ft out further than anyone else on the entire shore, and it was pretty packed. We wrere at Ocean City NJ and it was right at the end of July.... Anyhow, I was like, "Uh oh! Im being just a little too comfortable with this." I looked around and saw no one.
Luckily nothing happened. I saw some dolphins not too far away and that kinda brought me back to reality and I quickly moved closer in. But there's not a single time that I watch this show where I don't think about that day and how those dolphins easily could have been sharks. Sometimes ya get out in the water and it just gets kind of comfortable floating with the waves and ya forget what your doing. And I was actually surprised that I did that because I'm usually the one warning other people not to do what I was doing...lol!
But yeah, I'm 6ft tall and I was at a point where my feet were barely touching as the waves came in. Kinda of stupid of me. That's kind of the danger zone where this guy got nabbed. So it once again makes me think of that day when I see things like this. Not very smart to get too far out past the crowd like that.

Great White Shark show Hal! I am enjoying all shows shorter and longer ones. Hope those algorithms are great with the blend of different sized shows. Always fascinating as you tell about the events so well. Our senses are heightened with your voice, information, video and hey all the comments! When I was a kid my parents said "No. You are not going to see the movie Jaws because you will never go into the ocean again." Well, a best friend of mine and I snuck to see it. After that I was fascinated by sharks and have followed a lot about them but there is something personal I always do. Whenever someone says how big a shark is, I look around in the room I am in. In my mind's eye, I apply the size of the shark to the room(s), fit the shark in and fill it with water. Then I have my little panicky emotional experience and then wish it away. I make sure I do not let sharks into my dreams though. Telling about a big shark reminded me about that. It's kind of a weird thing I do and I have done it for years since Jaws. Anyone else do that kind of a crazy thing? Thanks, Monique

The boats moved in to scare it away and this thing just turned and cruised back and took the rest of the body? And this is happening right in front of her children and husband who could do nothing but watch all this from the beach.Dear lord, that had to be worst than anything anyone can think off.

Man what a brutal way to go he should have been focused more on beating the snout and although very difficult when you’re being attacked but trying to go for the eyes and the gills instead of trying to wave for outside help it’s you verse the shark at that point you gotta fight with everything sharks will avoid injury during a hunt at all costs focusing on those areas could save your life during a shark attack but sadly even though it’s rare when it comes to the type attacks on humans and the reasons behind it a strictly predatory attack from any Apex predator unarmed in their territory you’ve basically put yourself at their mercy like for instance you hear play dead when a grizzly attacks might work if it’s just defending its Cubs or territory and just want to neutralize the threat but if they are attacking because they are starving that does nothing but give them a hassle free meal the best and really only option is to fight dirty with all you have you can’t wait for the cavalry these predators are unbelievably fast and strong as seen here they can’t help you . And the real problem is, is once they find out how easy we are to catch we are immediately now on the menu although your much more likely to see that behavior in crocs, bears and big cats. Sharks honestly get a bad rap though when comparing the animals responsible for the most human deaths per year they are wayyy down the list. I guess we have mr Spielberg to blame for that. If you are going into any predators environment you have to be Prepared for the consequences and the possibility this could happen. It’s chilling to put yourself in that guys shoes and think of the hopelessness and the terror he felt especially if the shark started diving deep and bursting your eardrums before you drown or bleed out

I have a paranoia to being in water, swimming pool or Ocean and not being able to touch bottom while standing on my feet....this is why I do not go in any Ocean. Maybe to get my feet wet. But that's about it. I love fishing but not surf fishing or walking into any Stream, River, Canal, Laguna Madre or Rio Grande River....nope! Not me..... Hal, you have mentioned SA False Bay on several occasions, and to me it seems like the attacks at this location can be quite severe. I would be very interested to hear your opinion as to why this particular area has such terrible attacks. Could it be the topography of the offshore coastline? Are there nearby seal colonies? Are the sharks just naturally bigger in that area? Are there other, lesser known factors that make this area so dangerous?
Are you aware if the SA government provides any measures to protect people in the False Bay area, like they do in Australia at certain places?

@Shirley Moore The City of Cape Town has a sharks spotters program, where people are stationed up on the mountain above Muizenberg beach and Fish Hoek. Their primary job is to constantly scan the sea and radio down if they see a shark in the bay so that they may raise the alarm on the beach. I will see if I can find a link to their program and post in another comment. Also there is a Huge seal population around the False Bay Area which undoubtedly brings these larger sharks in to feed. Dyer Island is one of the largest congregations of Cape Fur seals in the world and is a major hunting ground for Great Whites. The attacks in False Bay have been so horrific because they’ve all involved very large GWs. When the water is calm in False Bay, it is fairly clear; I can’t even begin to imagine how traumatizing it was for some of the eyewitnesses to these attacks. To literally see a large shadow moving directly towards a swimmer and feeling so utterly helpless.

His luck finally ran out one day and a GW took one of his legs in another horrific attack witnessed by the shark spotters on the cliffs above Muizenberg Beach.

@@Professional_Victim_H8er Thank you for the information. Very enlightening and educational. There are certain areas that Hal mentions quite often:. Australia, Africa, Florida and California in the United States. There are other areas around the world, but they are not mentioned as often as the areas listed above. It always makes me think about why some areas are more prone than others.
I live in Florida and never go in the water myself. Just too many critters swimming around for me to enjoy myself while swimming, but I still go to the beaches because I enjoy the atmosphere of being near the ocean.
I believe sharks get a bum rap in this world, but not necessarily because of attacks. Sharks are necessary apex predators and the ocean is their domain and habitat. It is unfair to try to kill the sharks off because humans insist on going into an apex predator's habitat. We need to stay out of their habitat and let them exist in peace as they were meant to.

They'll just say "well this is a rare occasion" or with most, such as the Simon Nellist attack, they'll say the shark thought he was a seal in his wetsuit.🙄 Sharks have been around and evolved over millions of years and some biologists think sharks are stupid enough to not recognize a seal vs a human in a wetsuit? Either that or they think humans are stupid enough to believe that lie. There's always a shake attack that's going to happen, its not rare at all. It happens all the time, there's always a shark attack on a human, it's just not every shark that attacks. They also create false statistics, such as "ur more likely to get struck by lighting than you are attacked by a shark" yet not every person that's on land is swimming in an ocean. That would change if the same Amt of ppl used in that statistic were swimming in an ocean. And you can't control lighting, you can't control weather, it happens all over land, but you can control whether u get in the water with a giant shark with knives for teeth. Someone such as Simon Nellist would say these very things...and look what happened to him. It's horrible he had to die that way, that anyone does, but just don't put out some false sense of safety to people with statistics that don't mathematically apply in real life.
