I'm my opinion the worst shark attack(s) in history occurred over the five days that the sailors of the USS Indianapolis were adrift in the open ocean.
In my opinion people left in the ocean unaccounted for is the cause of the attacks. And no, men doing their job is not worse than women and children. One has an arsenal that could wipe out San Fran, the other, not a thing
@@SharksHappen That arsenal is useless against sharks. Those men in the ship never knew what was coming. It doesn't matter what their job was or what job they were doing. Not only were the initial survivors of the blast having to cope with being dumped in the ocean in total darkness, surrounded by burning fuel oil and wounded men, but after the shock of that type of violence had to deal with days of psychological and physical stress that the average person will never experience. How horrible it must have been to be thirsty, hungry, and perhaps wounded, floating or in the water for four days, seeing others wounded and being attacked, and wondering if you were next on the menu.
I read that not so many men were taken by sharks, but going mad from thirst, and drinking sea water, drowning, sunstroke etc, formed most of the casualties. The sharks feasted on the bodies. Yeah that was an epic Fbomb around 13:10. I thought he was reading something near the camera, but apparently he has all this stuff memorized, down to the names, locations, depths, times of day… and apparently his response to forgetting small details is rage haha
That WW2 "pig basket" story was the most horrifying story I have ever heard about the treatment of prisoners. Those poor men...tortured in ways that we can't even imagine for days. Then getting fed, still living, to hungry sharks. To do that to fellow human beings...there are just no words. Anyway, In 1975 when 'Jaws' was released, I was in a book store looking for the Peter Benchley novel and I discovered a book that I mistakingly thought was 'Jaws' (judging it by the big shark on the cover; I think it said "The true story of Jaws", and I'm thinking like the dumb teenager I was "Wow, Jaws is true?" Duh!)... Anyway, is was a compilation of hundreds of actual Shark attack cases from the U.S. Navy's "Shark Attack Files". So I bought it instead of the 'Jaws' novel. Friggin' book gave me nightmares - but I could not put it down. It was absoluty terrifying, very graphic w/photos of ghastly wounds, and all I say is that truth is far more horrifying than fiction. Reading about all of those actual cases, so vivid in their details...by the time I got around to reading the Jaws book, it was ..pretty timid in comparison..Anyway, I don't even read fiction any more because there's so much nonfiction out there which is far more scary and interesting. Glad to see a channel like this recalling many from that book I bought in 1975. Terrific job!
I cannot find the book anywhere. It is the all time best attack book ever published. It had the story, 1800s or so of the thresher shark tail decapitating someone on the boat. I need that book. And it is so much better than that jaws book. The movie is much better than the book. All the characters are slimeballs in the book
@@SharksHappen I'll look for my copy although it's spilt in half due to being read so much. But if I find it I can send it to you. It is a valuable resource; very well organized and well written. The one that got me was the 20 ft Tiger Shark that held a diver in his mouth near the bottom as his dive buddy helplessly looked on, knowing he could do absolutely nothing to help his friend. Or the attacks on the young South American boys that were swimming in rough surf near a dock when multiple sharks attacked them, just ripping them to gory pieces. There so many stories that are pure nightmare material...I'll start digging for it.

@@malachiwhite356 I remember that one, my dad had it for years. It had Ron Taylor's famous photo of a 12 foot Great White - taken while leaning off the back of an Australian fishing boat.
I am always on the look out for a new Sharks Happen Show. This one didn't disappoint. The first local shark attack I ever heard of was La Jolla Cove in the 1950s I believe. A skin diver went missing and the body was never recovered. Not sure if there were any witnesses, but it was assumed a large Great White shark. You've shared a couple of shark attacks that occured near Point La Jolla.
I learned how to scuba dive at the shore and the cove, for our sea tests. At the time those darn seals were not around. but of course the sharks were still there. There is a trench that the sharks follow into La Jolla. i SAW the shark and a great white but a baby one I assumed because he had no blemishes on skin or scars. I was somewhat insulted. He went right by me not even a how do you do. Graduated 2 years after pool was put in at HS. It did not help my peace of mind but my scuba teacher said to our class. Once your in the ocean, your food. Conduct yourself accordingly.
I love sharks and have since I was first terrified by the TV-edited version of "JAWS" back in the day (you remember the olden days? We only had three channels and when we got cable, it was only 13 channels? No? Just me? Okay then...). Despite my adoration of them, I will never brave the water and swim with them. I enjoy your videos because of your storytelling tone of voice and my favorite bit is the "What were you thinking". (I'm deaf/hard-of-hearing, and I can hear your voice clearly without wearing headphones).
Yes and I pre-date your timeline by about 10 years. So I can say remember the mid 1960's when you could only find out about sharks from reading or a Jaques Cousteau TV special on 1 of those 3 channels!
I remember the old days . saw the unedited version in theatre & was horrified to realize what I had swam with many times .realized never again . that's why I am still around & getting old now
I keep wondering why I watch your channel. I can only assume it's like the pleasurable thrill of watching scary movies: Adrenalin, but no threat. Also, despite talking about horrific incidents, you have a very soothing, authoratitive voice.
Hi mate I'm from Australia and love Ur show. Dead set the best thing on RUclips. Also seen a couple of tigers and mate ain't much they wouldn't eat. That 18 footer looks scarier than a GW
That tiger shark was a beast! You are right Hal it really looks like no tiger shark I've seen. It just morphs into a new beast when it got to such a massive size. The guy who caught it said it ate a hammerhead whole right before it was caught . It's a nightmare monster.
Very true!! Seeing the shape of the teeth was the only way I could tell it was a tiger. It looked a lot like a GW. Makes me wonder when people talk about a 20ft shark and unable to distinguish what type of shark they've seen if it is because of the changes they make as their size increases. They would be very difficult to tell apart at that size, especially since the tigers lose their stripes, so I've just learned. *Crazy pic!!!! Wow!!!*
Any time the shark is 20 or over it is a white. 18 still the biggest on record with a couple unconfirmed 20 footers in the past. 1 oof the 20 footers was measured along the curves adding length.

I read an article about the attack in Byron Bay, and it said that they had this dive buddy sitting with the wife after the attack, trying to support her. She (the dive buddy) was the one doing the interview for the article. One of the other divers was a violinist and had brought his instrument on board. He started playing Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’, as the others on the boat were picking the bits and pieces of this poor man out of the water and putting them in buckets. These two were on their damned honeymoon. So incredibly sad… and could you even begin to imagine how traumatic it would have been to witness that? And you know the poor wife probably has survivor’s guilt, knowing that shark was coming for her before her husband pushed her out of its path and was attacked instead. 🥺😩

Holy hell is that tiger shark in the link unbelievably and terrifyingly massive, hard to even believe they can get that big until you see one I suppose(and hopefully only on the internet...never in person, despite the fact itd probably be incredible to see in person). Not hard to believe the damage theyre capable of given how strong they are and just how massive that head is, and the sheer size of each razor sharp serrated tooth.
man something similar almost happened to me. my folks took our family on a vacation to St. Thomas, and booked us a snorkeling trip one of the days we were there. dropping into the water, we were already a little spooked by several barracudas just kind of hanging out beneath the boat, but the nervousness dissipated when they seemed uninterested. after some time, me and a few other people noticed a massive sea turtle swimming. I'd never seen one in person before, and it looked so graceful, so we all started kind of following it and just watching. after some time, i noticed i was the only one still following the turtle, as well as how far I'd drifted from the boat and other snorkelers. soon as I became aware of that, i then saw what looked like the silhouette of an 8 foot tiger shark materialize in the distance, seemingly going toward the turtle, as well as me. i never swam so fast in my life. I threw myself on the boat, told them i saw a large shark, and much to my dismay, nobody believed me. likely because i was only maybe about 8 or 10 and had already expressed fear of the barracudas initially when we got in the water. we were there for 5 more days and i didn't go swimming at all during that time.
I’m trying to think what it was that I was watching just the other day here on YT (it’ll come to me after I’ve finished posting this 🙄) that a Tiger shark was reportedly witnessed as being 24ft long 😳 Now 18ft I can believe, even 20ft is not impossible but 24ft? Abalone diving is legal in Japan and Korea except during the abalones mating season, October - December and there is a size limit restriction as well. For centuries it was only women that held their breath and dove for Abalone. I wonder if there’s any record of those attacks? I assume they probably occurred well before the 1900’s and the industry more than likely kept it quite secret.
We have a lot of deadly creatures here in Louisiana. The only two that ever attacked me were copperhead snakes and a bull shark. I`ve swam with gators all my life. I`m not worried about them at all. I got extremely lucky when the bull shark rammed me in 1982 and made me cut a flip in the air and hit my face on the bottom. I lost a strip of meat below my knee to the bone and got a fracture right above it just below my kneecap and still have a big knot on the bone and a big white scar. You won`t see me back in the ocean. Large fish started leaping out of the water right before I got slammed like a truck hit me. I would have a heart attack if I found myself standing in 4 feet deep murky water in the Gulf again.
I learned to scuba dive in Jamaica, and was surprised, there were hardly any fish there. That's why the diver was so far out from the island, where they could find some. Once I stayed at a hotel, right on a bay there. One morning, about 50 people lined up on the shore, to pull in a huge net they laid out. When they got the net on the shore, I expected to see a lot of fish. There were only about 30 or 40 little ones. And I think I saw only one or two, diving.
@@SharksHappen Once, I I went to Freeport Bahamas, and did only one dive. Before I dove, I told the guy, that I did not want to dive, if there were going to be sharks. He said there wouldn't be any. I dove about 150 dives before, all over the Caribbean, and had never seen a shark, and didn't want to. So I went down,, with about 8 or 9 other divers. When we got down to about 50 ft., the sharks came. There were also about 10 of them, and they slowly circled around us, about 20 ft. away. They were bull sharks, and reef sharks. My impression, was that they were like swimming statues, they were totally fearless. After that, I only remember seeing one shark, about 100 ft. below me. That was all, for 200 or so dives. So they are not everywhere, except the Bahamas !

Again - not only the stories but the way you tell them is what gather people around you. ❤️ Ps I'm always amazed by this fella in the backround. Imagine having this thing behind your back just like shown here
Yes. I wasn't affected by it at first, but now it does.

I believe the “fella” in the background is Ernest Hemingway.

Great Show, Hal, as always. I had to come back after viewing the Tiger shark link you left, Holy Crap. I can see how they can swallow someone whole. That thing is massive.
Things of nightmares when they get that big. All 3. Bulls at 13 feet, whites 20 plus and 16 plus tigers seem to become exponentially more frightening.
These 18'+ size sharks are just pure monsters....anyone diving/swimming/ surfing are taking a chance of meeting one of these behemoths....are they crazy!!??
Great stuff Hal.
Why I choose Snowboarding over surfing....
The stuff of nightmares. They are scary enough but when the bulls, tigers and whites get to a couple feet of max they transform into beasts.
@@SharksHappen EXACTLY!! Sharks that big can easily make a person disappear without a trace.
Im sure some missing people presumed "drowned" have been taken by one of these behemoths.
Keep the stories coming..this is one of my favorite channels on youtube
@Chandler Burse the monster term was a figure of speech...like saying worst nightmare.
Can you imagine a shark caughing up your husband or wife after an attack.talk about trauma yikes
That tiger shark was the size and girth of a bus! Holy Moly that is scarey as heck even being dead.
Thank you for keeping the "blooper" in place! Much appreciated. Keep up the great work. 🤣😂
I was in Kauai a few years ago snorkeling. I was swimming, facing forward when all of a sudden I feel this huge something brush against my stomach.
For a split second I was like omg! Shark!
I looked down and saw that a huge sea turtle has just swam right underneath me from behind me.
Really like your videos. I read all the shark attacks books growing up. I like seeing your T-shirts too. Living on an a remote out-island in the Bahamas for so long, I have encountered some crazy huge-sized tigers and hammerheads. I saw three tigers toether, looked like whales, all cruising through a shallow cut. I never speared there again! You rock and have a great channel. Thank you!
The narrator is just awesome and it looks as if he himself was there to witness it.
Thats what you call the story telling skills.
Love how you left in the blooper! Good stuff, Hal.
Great job Hal. I love this content. I guess the red abalone diver in story 3 was between a shark and a hard place...

Yeah that was an epic Fbomb around 13:10. I thought he was reading something near the camera, but apparently he has all this stuff memorized, down to the names, locations, depths, times of day… and apparently his response to forgetting small details is rage haha
No worries I couldn't pronounce that dude's name either. You're doing a great job! Love your channel!
I love your way of telling the stories. Keep it up Hal and greetings from Sweden.

You’re the best, Hal. Really love your videos. Thanks for sharing your info. Happy Holidays!
13:00 .... brother, don't worry about it, you've got an interesting, unique and informative channel.
Does anyone remember the "shark" issue of National Geographic published circa 1968? Chief Brody is shown reading this issue when Hooper is having a meal at Brody's house.
@@malachiwhite356 I remember that one, my dad had it for years. It had Ron Taylor's famous photo of a 12 foot Great White - taken while leaning off the back of an Australian fishing boat.
I almost vomited upon hearing the pig basket story. It is beyond horrid, what evil mankind can, and will resort to.
Your way of reporting these stories is awesome!
AsMoth files episode 2 features that one - Robert Pamperin,1959. About 20’ GW.
I covered the Pamperin story already. One i have never forgotten since first hearing it.
Hal, you're amazing👏
I watched jaws on On Tv…. About a hundred times. Still love that movie!!!
I remember the old days . saw the unedited version in theatre & was horrified to realize what I had swam with many times .realized never again . that's why I am still around & getting old now
I watched Jaws for the first time at a drive thru. By the end of the movie the concrete parking lot wasn't looking too safe

Love the no edit Hal. See what you can find out about 119th Street shark attack this past summer in OC Maryland.
I keep wondering why I watch your channel. I can only assume it's like the pleasurable thrill of watching scary movies: Adrenalin, but no threat. Also, despite talking about horrific incidents, you have a very soothing, authoratitive voice.
The stories still fascinate me like they did when i was 10
Hi mate I'm from Australia and love Ur show. Dead set the best thing on RUclips.
Also seen a couple of tigers and mate ain't much they wouldn't eat. That 18 footer looks scarier than a GW
Looking good Hal...real good. LOL! Keep serving 'em up...ALWAYS appreciated.
Only found the channel this morning and can't get enough, the way it's told is amazing absolutely love channel now keep up the good work💙
That tiger shark was a beast!
Did I hear Hal saying, Shark F... Soup? Lol, great show!

Gibraltar has never had a recorded shark attack but I tell you, gw sharks do come into the Mediterranean to give birth every 2 years. So far we have been very lucky but considering the amount of sub saharan immigrants who drown trying to make their into Europe and some corpses are never found make me believe that sharks are cleaning up and perhaps developing a taste for human flesh? 🥺😩
Wow. I didnt see anything on that or would have shared. Just added a new source where i get much more witness statements
Aw, how tragic 😞
The shark doesn't care about people being on their honeymoon, they are just food to them. if you go I t he water you are just food. They knew this and still went in.

Hal, you are a fine story teller, salutes from Germany,
man something similar almost happened to me. my folks took our family on a vacation to St.
I love listening to your stories. You have a great voice and you're real.

I’m trying to think what it was that I was watching just the other day here on YT (it’ll come to me after I’ve finished posting this 🙄) that a Tiger shark was reportedly witnessed as being 24ft long 😳
Now 18ft I can believe, even 20ft is not impossible but 24ft? C’mon 🤦♂️

Thoroughly enjoying your uploads and your no bullshit/straight to the point presentations. I also enjoy when you laugh at the surprised reactions to people’s attitudes when they get bitten. It’s not a cold hearted “haha, sucked in, you got bitten”, but more of a “seriously? You’re surprised you were bitten by a shark, in the ocean, hanging onto a bag of bleeding fish whilst splashing around on the surface like you’re having an epileptic seizure” 😳🤷♂️😂😂😂
Cheers Hal 🍻🍻🍻🇦🇺👍
Exactly. It is the difference in our states of mind i find humor in. Thanks for watchin and there are hundreds more attacks we all will go thru

They are yes. I think you can still get them recteationally tho and poachers go and get them. Not aware of the commercial side of it tho.
@@SharksHappen In the USA there is no comercial market (that is legal). Have you looked up Australia's abalone diving industry? Those guys are insane and deal with the men in gray suits all the time.
@@deedeeramone34 Quite a few of the attacks Hal has mentioned are Abalone divers. It is legal in NZ and Aus but with size restrictions and season restrictions etc. Also I believe you cannot use Scuba so they go down on a breath hold or use a Hookah air supply from the boat.
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks
I would not want to see a shark when on the water in a small boat let alone in the water with it. Makes me shudder
