    Competition can be like a pool of gas getting lit on a match. Even if SN8 crashes SpaceX can learn a from the data they receive.
    Levels of Success:
    1. Clears the pad
    2. Reaches near high altitude
    3. Switches to bellyflop mode
    4. Flaps work and can maintain stabilization for awhile
    5. Flips to engine down successfully
    6. Comes down to hard or at bad angle
    7. Lands Undamaged
    The farther through these steps SN8 survives the more space X will learn. What step do think it will make it to?

      Like elon said in the tweet if SN8 destroys itself (which let's be honest it's going to) that's why they have SN 9 and 10 waiting. That is, if they don't destroy SN 9 and 10 during the SN 8 landing attempt.

    My guess is that there will be several different versions of Starship: Earth-to-LEO, Translunar, Lunar Lander. They may even specialize into tanker vs cargo lifter.

    • @noflightcert
      @noflightcert 3 года назад +1

      You're not too far off. There's also going to be a fully expendable one for deep space mission and for the Air Force (they aren't too confident in a fully reusable Starship). The lunar one might even be put deeper into space for moon-to-moon travel.

    • @brianmurray505
      @brianmurray505 3 года назад +6

      You are correct, this is already part of the plan to have different variants. A large part of this is that the Lunar version actually has some additional engines that the other versions don't. Lunar gravity is so weak that using the raptors, even just 1, for landing would be too strong and would potentially just push the starship away from the moon. They are adding smaller thrusters, maybe similar to super draco's inorder to have a low power option for moon landings.

    • @n0ukf
      @n0ukf 3 года назад

      Of course there will be a tanker version, that's the only way Starship will make it to the moon or Mars.

      @@n0ukf I think they mean tanker v. cargo lifter will have some differences. They will, OP, because for cargo they need to have a fairing. Tanker probably won't.
