I love how this trilogy is not scared of making sacrifices like that. First, Hiccup's leg, then his dad and lastly, Toothless. It's realistic that's probably why it really resonates with the audience.
I wouldn't say the last one was realistic, but other than that, yeah. Other than, maybe, the idea of losing your friends to a toxic girlfriend. :'''D Sorry, just was passing by and got triggered by your comment saying that the last one was a good decision. Although, if you think about that, making stupid decisions while being in sleep deprivation state for half a week at least (and up to several years from inheriting the chief post) is actually quite realistic. Huh.
Especially something extremely unpopular Edit: people's ability to gather context have gone to shit, if your familiar with the httyd Fandom the third movie was the least popular, but those who responded after Cyber are 12 time stupider then he is. Love ya cy!
The villain did have a backstory, however, it wasn't explained in the movie. He only mentioned that killing dragons made him a hero in his village, so he decided to kill as many as he could. So he's not just evil, he was probably consumed with his thirst for praise; he wanted to become the hero. Also, he's very passionate about hunting, so the hunt to kill dragons became his life.
Not to mention that tidbit about his backstory I'd enough to make it apparent that he's meant to be a direct foil for Hiccup - if our protagonist had gone through with killing Toothless like anyone else would have, he could well have wound up in this exact position when that act earned him praise at long last. We don't need Grimmel to be a dully fleshed out character with flashback showing exactly how he got to this point because he's designed to be a narrative tool to contrast Hiccups eventual sacrifice
I know it's really sweet that jack had such an emotional moment with the ending, but for some reason him staring blankly overcome with emotion while kor and eden talk & Kom susser todd plays in the background is sending me.
16:45 Gotta love the reference to the obscure asterix and obelisk series, that only ever made it to be a known classic comic book series and spawning at least 10 internationally released films until as recently as 2018.
I love that despite the villain being technically defeated Hiccup realises they’ll always be people like him out there trying to hunt dragons, this movie has a really sad ending to an amazing story I was in tears at the end
I saw the first HTTYD in theaters shortly after I turned 7. Walking out, I told my parents that they HAD to make a sequel. My dad argued that there was nothing left in his story so there probably wouldn't be one. I saw the second HTTYD in theaters a few months after I turned 11. I walked out, smug smile on my face as my dad finally accepted that I had called the sequel as a 7 year old. "But don't expect a third one, there's actually no where else to go now, he's grown up." he said as I rambled on about where the story could go from there. I saw the third HTTYD in theaters for my 16th birthday. I walked out of the theaters crying and I turned to my dad, "That one. That was the end of the story." He agreed.
Everyone's already talked about this a lot but this movie is incredibly special to me. The first movie came out when I was 9 years old and the last one when I was 18. Literally half my life, as I went from elementary school to starting college, these movies were always there. I'm so happy that I could grow physically and emotionally as a person alongside hiccup. It really is special.
Grimmer is one of the best Dreamworks villains. He has a personal edge, very useful tools and minions, and above all is extremely intelligent. He controlled the heroes every move, and came so close to victory. Grimmel the Gristly rocks.
What a coincidence as I just finished rewatching the trilogy and this one has always been my favorite movie of all time. What a beautifully crafted movie and an absolutely amazing conclusion to the franchise. I'm really hoping for Kung Fu Panda 4 to be on par.
Drago and Grimmel both function as dark reflections of the kind of person Hiccup could have become, had he taken a similar path. When he had Toothless at his mercy and was about to kill him, it was like three main paths opened up before him: *A)* Kill this rare dragon, become a hero to my village which has warred with dragons for generations, and dedicate myself to being the greatest dragon hunter the world has ever known until not one of these beasts remains. *B)* Learn to tame this rare dragon by making it submissive to my will, weaponize its power for my own personal gain and use what I've learned to build an army of dragons to command, ultimately dominating the world with them. *C)* Free this rare dragon, learn more about it, earn its trust and loyalty by befriending & protecting it, risk my life to show my dragon hating village that they don't have to fight them, and dedicate myself to protecting dragons even when it means fighting other humans, losing my father and eventually having to let go of my closest friend so he can truly live free. Hiccup definitely chose the most difficult, heartbreaking path but it proved to be the best one. Moreover, Toothless is so smart that he'll no doubt use what he learned from Hiccup to better teach & protect his fellow dragons as their Alpha.
I just realized that this follows the same structure of Kung-Fu Panda. Movie one the protagonist goes through a journey to get respect from his piers. Movie 2 involves the protagonist going up against a big bad. Movie three is where one of the protagonists meets their own species who were thought to be dead.
Jack is so me about hiccup lmao. I already was crushing since the first movie, but then the SEQUEL. My standards for men were forever tainted once again 💀
Unfortunately I never got to see this movie in theaters (never getting over that), but this film truly is a marvel to me. By far my favorite film franchise that will always be special to me no matter wat.

Don't know how I feel now either tho. Shame we didn't get to see more of the side characters, but the movies never focused on them much. The TV series made me think about them way more than the movies wanted most viewers to.

Snotlout wants Astrid, then Ruffnut, then Hiccup's mom. Ruffnut wants Hiccup, then Enet, then finally Fishlegs who marries her in the third movie. Tuffnut is just a chill dude, he's my favorite btw.
