This looks like a simple solution, but will only work on certain bikes. With so many “standards” of headtubes, headsets and fork steerers this looks it could be a real wild goose chase. Not to mention, not all frames are made with suspension compensated geometry, I suspect most tapered steer tubes wether for for fat bikes or mountain bikes, will not be a good fit geometry wise even if you can make the bearings work if it’s an older bike or early fat bike . I recommend planning it out very carefully before ordering parts and cutting anything. This works on oversized headtubes that are probably aluminum. Headset needs to be semi-integrated. Regular pressed in cup headset will not work., full integrated will not work either, though it might if the headtubes is bored out. Good video none the less.
@@assajacket9202 Not sure about other frames but the Haro SR uses an integrated headset where the bearing cups are formed into the headtube. These adaptor headsets only work with a semi-integrated headtube where the bearing cup is inserted into the headtube.

Hey there thanks for watching. And to your question, you need to measure your inner diameter of your head tube. Cane creek might have something in that size

Is that exactly what you did in the video because I don't understand, or do you already have a big hole in the frame where the lower part of the tapered fork fits in anyway and you just have to put this adapter on to make it fit?
So basically you have to measure your bottom headtube diameter. If you have a 44mm headtube you can get the right headset to fit in there. If you do not have a 44mm headtube it wont work.
@@RydenDirty okay thank you for the fast answer. the head tube is straight but it is the width of the tapered part of the fork on bottom and on top. this is the only reason why it works. On older bikes the head tubes are alot narrower. the tapered bottom of fork will not fit. I wish it did, I am trying to go to boost but cant because of older narrower head set. Your bicycle’s headtube must have an inside diameter of 44mm or larger in order to use any tapered steer fork. Traditional 1 1/8 in headtubes, or 34mm inside diameter headtubes, cannot accept a tapered steering column fork, therefore we do not make an adapter that will allow you to use a tapered steering column on a traditional 1 1/8 in headtube.

Here's what I know, if your head tube is 44mm you can do exactly what I did. You can go to crane creek and look and see what they got for headsets. They might have just what you need.
so it’s been a few months and before I go ahead and do this to by xc bike... how’s it ride? I know it fits... but what does the extra 10mm do to the head tube angel? Is the steering still responsive and not slippery?

How do I know which one to get? The website says top, bottom, or complete. I have a specialized rockhopper comp and am wanting to upgrade my fork. Thanks
So are there other brands of headset that will work with this setup? It is unclear to me what specific spec is the thing that is making this work? The Cane Creek 40 headset is $85, and comes in about 20 different varieties. For my backup bike, I'm looking for something much cheaper if possible.
Hello. Thanks for a good video. I am about to make a similar modification. I bought a NUKEPROOF NEUTRON BOTTOM HEADSET CUP but I realised there is a gap between the head tube and the bottom cup so I need to cut it. The bottom cup is now resting on a small ledge inside the tube rather than on the lower part of the head tube. How important is the precision? Is it supposed to rest on both the ledge and the bottom or just the bottom? Grateful for any help.
In my opinion I would cut enough off the top or bottom Races so they fit flush to the frame on top and bottom. once you put it all together they aren't going to go anywhere.👍
Hy guys, thanks for your work movie. I was in the mood for one of these upgrade. What do you think, that will be any risk with this operation, if I change same 100mm fork than before just the new fork will be tapered and 15x110mm axle version? Wich risk: cracking or breaking may protrude my straight 1,1/8" headtube wich is 125mm long. I ask these because the manufacturer says this modification will not be covered by the frame warranty if the frame head tube is damaged after the modification. Do you think it's worth the risk, do I have reason to fear? Incidentally, according to an archive brochure, the model 2 years ago was factory-fitted with such a converter in the frame of the fork. Sorry for my novel grade question, but your response and post-installation experience would help a lot. Thanks once and I 👍 your work
I think you should be fine. as long as the head tube is 44mm. technically you're not doing anything to the frame just the headset. so the frame should still be covered.
@@RydenDirty Thanks your answer. It should be still covered, I give you right....but our distribute at home said, with this opretion will lost the cover of my frame. I think due to the increased roughness of the headpiece and fork which can put a heavier load on the headpiece than the smooth straight headpipe versions.
I believe so. I think you just need a different bearing race like this cambriabike.com/products/fsa-steel-crown-race-adaptor-1-5-to-1-1-8?variant=13178767605872&adpos=&scid=scplp117719&sc_intid=117719&gclid=CjwKCAjwjJmIBhA4EiwAQdCbxjSi4cwZlAYE1fO-KqOhsFm5Pu7lPwZjXt_SKn8bf41vGYqYJ6MHRxoCbN0QAvD_BwE

Hmm🤔 not 100 percent sure about the top but the bottom should work. Or you could just use the top race you already have and just get the new bottom race and that might work

@@RydenDirty Awesome and glad to know. I found your video as I needed to do the same mod on my fatbike. Tapered 1.5" forks to a straight 44mm frame and got the parts installed today. Had to shorten the cup just like you did too. Almost done building the bike so hopefully will try it out soon! Thanks🙂
That's dope bro !! And cool tool 👌🏼🔥
You know how we do it👌
nice bro, well layed out vid, cant go wrong with a dremel!!! cheers!!
Yup I know my way around some metal lol
In 3rd world countries people still use straight tube frames but they are not that wide to put that adapter. You have to make them in a lathe . And i haven't seen videos of that.
I wish I still had my lathe to do that. I use to do that with motorcycle steer tubes
@@RydenDirty i wish some brand would make a cone that would fit bellow the frame tube to use tappered fork in those old frames. the risk of breaking the frame in jumps increases but i would still try that at my own risk lol
You helped me a LOT thank you!!! best vid! :))
👍
sir, what is the name of tools you use to remove the cup from the head tube.thanks

Hey man, not sure how much help you could be but I figured I'd give it a shot anyways. I have a 2017 reiliegh tokul 2 that has a non tapered fork.
It says it's a 45 degree upper and 1 - 1/8 . Do you think I could do what you did with the same part you used or if it's even possible? Let me know if some more information would be helpful and I could try and get that to you. Thanks so much and great video!
I didnt feel a difference to be honest. So far so good 👍
I have a 2012 Ibis mojo sl carbon frame. It came with a 1-1/8" steer tube fox fork. I want to convert it to a newer tapered fork. The new fork is a 40mm/1.5 inch tapered (lower measurement). The inside diameter of my headtube is 39.75mm. Will one of these adapters work on my bike? Thanks
I don't think so but I can't say for sure. what I would do if I was you is hit up cane creek and they can give you a definite answer on what will work for your head tube
@@RydenDirty Thanks for the reply. I notice that my fork is the same measurement as the one you installed. What was the measurement of the outside diameter that went into your headtube?
@@eleven8948 the race was 44mm
@@RydenDirty Was that the lower o.d. or the upper side o.d.?

I Wish I could have bike's like that..
Thanks for very informative tutorial..
Watching from phillipines.
Glad you like them! Thanks For Watching🤘
So you just need to get the EC44/40 bottom to fit the tapered fork? You used the original top from your bike?
I got a whole new headset top and bottom.
I have that same Cane Creek headset in my Juiced RCS fat ebike
Nice dude
Hey man I'm struggling to find a fork with a straight steerer if u still have your old manitou could u help me contact you
Sorry I no longer have them. 🤷♂️
Ohh it's okay thanks man
is there any way to install tapered fork on 42mm headtube: Spank Tweet Tweet frame or similar....
To be honest I'm not really sure
How are the Koozer hubs holding up?
I sold the bike bike but I hear they are going strong
How do I know which one to get? The website says top, bottom, or complete. I have a specialized rockhopper comp and am wanting to upgrade my fork. Thanks
I would get the whole set. But make sure your head tube is a 44mm inner diameter.
@@RydenDirty ok
Will it works on my commencal absolut cr-mo? Internal diameter is 42mm...
Only if its a 44mm
So are there other brands of headset that will work with this setup? It is unclear to me what specific spec is the thing that is making this work? The Cane Creek 40 headset is $85, and comes in about 20 different varieties. For my backup bike, I'm looking for something much cheaper if possible.
Not sure of other brands. But I will say just measure the inner diameter of your head tube and you’ll have your answer🤘
@@RydenDirty Operation completed. Worked like a charm even tough the cut weren't perfect. 😀
@@danielvernersson1936 awesome my friend glad to hear it all worked out 👍👍
Hy guys, thanks for your work movie.
Hey, thanks for the video. Can I install a non tapered fork on a tapered frame?
I believe so. I think you just need a different bearing race like this
cambriabike.com/products/fsa-steel-crown-race-adaptor-1-5-to-1-1-8?variant=13178767605872&adpos=&scid=scplp117719&sc_intid=117719&gclid=CjwKCAjwjJmIBhA4EiwAQdCbxjSi4cwZlAYE1fO-KqOhsFm5Pu7lPwZjXt_SKn8bf41vGYqYJ6MHRxoCbN0QAvD_BwE

Is there any side effect or bad effect from using the adaptor OS to tappered frame?
I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying you want to put this on a tapered frame?
@@RydenDirty Oh sorry, I mean using adaptor for Non Tappered frame to tappered fork. Is the any bad effect?

It should but you have measure the inner diameter

@@largeman0026 then you should be all set
How can I know if this will be compatible with my headtube? I have a press fit headset for my straight steer fork. The outside diameter of the headset at the bottom is 44mm, but the inside of the tube appears to be 40ish? Do you know if this would work for me? Thank you. Great vid btw.
Hmm🤔 not 100 percent sure about the top but the bottom should work. Or you could just use the top race you already have and just get the new bottom race and that might work
You have listed a link to the complete headset, but i dont understand numbers. Which one did you buy?
What you need to do is measure the inner diameter of your head tube. That will give you the answer of what headset to buy. Or you can look up the manufacturer of your frame and they can tell you
@@RydenDirty like when i press on the link there are a bunch of options. Line ec44/30 and so on... Which one did you pick?thx

I’m trying to upgrade my old Scott contessa from like 6 years ago. I want a new fork and my dealer told me good luck, you have a straight 1 1/8 tube and is hard to find a fork that size this days. I’m so sad because I really love my bike frame. Should I try this method on my bike?
Absolutely and also there are plenty of companies that make a straight tube and a tapered fork that are the same model. Just pricey

What's the difference between them apart from size ? Is tapered frame stiffer and somehow better ?
To be honest im not sure but my guess would be stiffer.
is there a variant for a 34mm?
not that im aware of
Hello bud I'm looking at doing this to my ns suburban due to straight steerer forks being harder to come buy, which model headset did you use as there seems to be lots of options for the 40 series
Think I've worked it out, is it a zs44 to ec44 tapered headset?
Yes thats the one buddy. Just make sure your headtube has 44mm openings
Great vid bro! Wich headset did you used to adapt on frame? Need to do the same on my frame to install a tapered fork. Thnx👍
Thanks bro, item is in the description 🤙
Im planning on putting a tapered manitou machete on my non tapered mountainpeak frame. Do u think its safe to use on an amateur xc race?
in my opinion yes🤘
Can u use a pipe cutter to cut the headset?
I don't see why you couldn't but I'm not sure if a pipe cutter is thin enough to stay on there to cut it.
I see that you are using koozer hubs bro, do you know how to reduce the resistance on the rear hubs, they have a lot of resistance the hub doesn't want to freewheel, I heard thisis a ccommon issue with the xm 490
Honestly I haven't had any issues to be honest 😕
Thank you

Was the old fork a markhor? I have same frame hard to get forks for it. Good advice on the new set up. I have a markhor already. All my friends are telling me thet is kind of dangerous riding on that.
Yes it is a markhor. In my opinion its a pretty decent fork. With that being said, I would say for a light not the best rider it a great fork to start with. If you're an advanced rider I wouldn't recommend it because an advanced rider would probably be to hard on it. But I have been using mine for almost a year and I've had no problems with it.
Did you used a top raise before inserting that headset cap?
Not sure what you mean..
Remember boys and girls 1:03 this only works on 44mm head tube
