Ran one of these adaptors on my wifes old hard tail fuji bike and it worked out great the only reason i think ppl freak out about not having a tapered headtube is bc its a bit of an inconvenience to replace the fork bc non tapered forks are becoming harder to find in shops
Hi Guys, i bought that exact non tapered to tapered headset conversion i'm putting a 150mm Suntour Aion fork (off my giant trance) onto the voodoo hoodoo, its only a 27.5 wheels but i truly cant wait......... great video guys hope that Marin rides real sweet

I am hoping that my next rotational leave will get this project done and dusted, turning the Voodoo Hoodoo into a sort of slack Geo trail hardtail ...... On the uphand the I will be bringing or rather trying to take my LUTU 120mm air forks, Wake handlebars and stem, and head set back out to Iraq to try do a "In Camp Special" from one of the cheap bikes they have out here..... we will see plus it gives me something to train skills on in the evenings THAT is if the Iraqi police don't confiscate it them on arrival in Basra, as they aint the .... lets say most "Honest" or "Un-corrupt" police force there is..... we will see. Perfect timing on this video. This is something I was considering to breathe some new life into an old project. Oh and if any ebike manufacturers read these comments send these guys a trail and dh rated ebike so they can review it. I'm getting to old to climb up to the trailhead more then once or twice in a day. Want to see a quality review before buying
I just did the same thing to my 2015 Specialized Rockhopper using the Cane Creek adapter. I picked up a Rockshox XC32 and a wheelset with tires at a bike swap meet for $30. The Headset adapter cost more than the rest of the parts.
Nice setup, but can you put also a tapered steerer in a straight headtube who was fitted with 1-1/8" (34mm) headset bearings ? Perhaps the video title missed the real size of the headtube on the Marin ? Straight headtubes are not a standard.
Hey, thanks for the comment. You know we are not aware of a 34mm adapter to fit a tapered steerer tube. The Marin ks a 44mm as I am sure you are aware.... not sure of we mentioned it?
Tysm!!! you just saved me thousands dude seriously upgrading my hardtail specialized, and doing forks then front wheel, like buying parts then flipping them top a specialized status 160, so the two most expensive up front, then a month or two later the frame, and back wheel. Going I9 hydras, rode bmx, and played extreme sports for 25 years now. MTB is by far the most fun, and its alot less stress on me compared to bmx dirt jumping. #IDJM #eks #leatt #spy+ #fistgloves
I did the same with my Specialized, tapered fork onto a straight steerer, I used a risk headset as they make an adapted one to do this (or at least they used to). It adds a little extra height to the front of the bike, plus I put 120mm forks rather than 100mm, but I've not really noticed any difference in handling. You should of asked, I could've told you all about it 😂😂😂 Im not sure I like the gap between the cup and the steerer tube, I think I would get a machine shop to buzz the top off it so it fits in tightly Interested to hear your thoughts after you've ridden it. Great video Take care guys 👍😎🍻
For sure Dan, we should of called you first!! 🤣🤣😜 I'm wondering how it will be too, I'm sure it won't be too crazy. 🤔 But I could be wrong, also gonna trim the excess👍
Cheech is looking spiffy!! A new set of Clarks rotors would look nice on him. Nice Major League hat Wolfman is sporting in this one. Someone is gonna send you guys "The Clapper™" !
Hahaha that's hilarious! Thanks man, my buddy got me the Major League hat in St. Louis. We gotta fix that dang adapter, and then we will take a look at the brakes. Thanks buddy🥰👍
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS That's one heck of a buddy! Messing with brakes is fun, I finally put hydraulics on my 29er and had to order another kit for a bleed screw, hopefully it's the right size screw. Have a fun weekend and get out there and shred!!
You got it right! it looks sharp the color combos on this bike with the fork are sweet! I did a ledge x 1 video and also I got me a wheelmaster 27.5 wheel I am making my gravity fsx 1.0 a mullet bike I tried my ledge X1 front wheel up front and man it rolled over everything so much smoother than my 26" wheel did. Go test that new set up out I hope it works for ya!
Gotta do something about that gap between the head tube and lower cup. It will end up disastrous for the bike and possibly disastrous for you, my friend.
This is how I what me and my sons to be when they are order they're 10 and 7 ATM the 7 is a keen bike and the 10 does like to ride but does share the passion
Man itvtakes a lot of work and it's obviously not all fun and games!! LOL But we hope hope as well, we are truly each other's best friends. Thanks for the awesome comment
Right now I'm riding suntour forks non tapered I was really wanting foxforks till I realized there all tapered then my alternative forks were going to be rockshox Judy forks but now I seen this video I'm probably going to get foxforks but I will have to convert my front hub from a qwick release axle to a thru axle hub.
Risk make a headset that will work well with the Marin straight tube when converting to a tapered fork . The recess being not deep enough is a common issue .
This is actually silly and very misleading to those that are wondering you can’t do this to budget bikes or older bikes with a 1 1/8 head tube a 44mm head tube is actually intended to be used with either a straight steerer OR a tapered steerer fork. Surly and other brands have been doing that since like 2012 you just have to get the right headset. This makes it seem like you can put any fork on any bike. Make sure y’all do the research.
You must have not watched the episode. We clearly stated that it won't work on certain headtubes like the GT Aggressor Pro that is a 34mm-34mm. It is silly that you say that "you can't do this to budget bikes" when every one of our bikes is "budget"🤦♂️. There were better things you could have brought up about this episode to pick on. Bro, you need to step up your troll game😉😆.
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS That guy just comes in, does not watch the entire episode and repeats EXACTLY what has clearly been mentionned in the video and says it's misleading 🙃 Can you put a tapered fork on a straight headtube? Yes! On all the different bikes on the planet earth? No! Just do your research, or watch the damn video....
hello again So rewatch this video again cuz I am wanting to convert both my Mongoose PRO 29" and my 27.5" Conorado NISKI too ROCK SHOX 15x110 BOOST setups on both of these bikes. I remenber seeing you do this Cuz these 2 bike need a better front supsention cuz what I have now are not working very well for me now. Also both of there headset take a 44mm cup size cuz I am running a FSA Orbit MX 1-1/8" type on them as of now. so THX again for doing this CUZ now I can upgrade these 2 bike too have a better Mnt. bike riding time.
So... I got a 26 inch K2 Nomad 3.0 that I was HOPING to put a used 29er tapered fork on... I was able to get the bearing race cups out of the frame....and that doggone taper is STILL so wide where I don't think it will work. 😢 So I have a fork and some tires for sale and I'll probably be looking for a used Judy or something....
Thank you at this moment I had bought the bicycle fork I had said that I got the wrong size instead there are also adapters specifically for this. Ps; now I delete it from the sales ad!
I'm using a tapered fork on a regular 1 1/8 straight headtube. I let the bottom 11/8 race drop as far as it would go on the tapered headtube. Then I dropped the headtube on to the tapered steertube. Seems to work fine.
I was so sad when I found out my 2010 Stumpy with an integrated headset can't accommodate one of those cups so I'm pretty screwed gonna see if I can convert my Talas 32 140mm fork to a Float with Risse Racing. We'll see, hopefully it'll last a while like that.
I think you should have taken a grinder to that bottom cup to trim the extra length that hits the inside lip of the headtube. It'll probly be fine tho. 😎⚓👍
The example in this video is using an adapter to fit a tapered fork into a 11/4" headtube. Is it possible to stick a tapered fork into the old standard 1 1/8" headtubes?
I would love to see you guys convert a beach cruiser into a mountain bike with front forks with shocks, handlebars, gearing, dirt tires ECT... And test it once it's finished
Well that worked only cause that headtube was big to begin with. Before there were tapered steerer tubes there were straight 1 1/2” steerers. So the old headset was a reducer OR the zero stack hight jobbies...
Bro...where do you get your t-shirts? I like that West Side one you're wearing. Also dig Wolfmans hat...that Major League movie logo is sick! The Bike looks awesome...mind the gap. Lol! Cheers boys!!!
Lol man the shirt is from the gym I teach and train at. I wish I could send you one man but they have been gone for quite sometime😟 and the hat was a gift from one of my clients I work with at the gym. His father and the Wolfman are buddies, thanks for the comment brother. Made us feel good!! Currently camping right now answering stuff with Wolfman 👊
11:16 don't measure at the head tube as the head tube can be tapered externally, so it will give slacker angle than it actually is, it's best to measure at the station or the fork legs at a straight area.
I believe that’s not accurate because forks have offsets and if you measure off the fork it will be a slightly different head angle. They measured correctly
@@josuemedina58 The reality is that some frames (most these days) have tapered headtubes externally and you'll get an incorrect angle. And some forks are not parallel to the steer tube, so you may also get an inaccurate angle. But most forks, even when offset, are still parallel to the steer tube. You can prove this by measuring the headtube angle, then rotate the bars 180 degrees and measure again. If the measurement is the same, then your forks are parallel with the steer tube. (Also a good way to check for a bent fork!)
Great video, however I'm looking for info on fitting a tapered fork on my straight frame but my frame's inner headtube measures 34mm... do you know if there are any adapters available ?
I don't know about that? it seems like if you can put a bike together out of the box you should be able to make a simple driveline adjustment?! if not take it to your local bike shop to make sure it's safe (big box right!) to ride and everything works correctly?!
Well out of the box I can see were you are coming from, but most will buy at the store. And I seriously doubt walmart employees do not tune it in. So we just want to show what to expect for most. Thanks for the comment 👍
Shoot, the lower external FSA cup is too tall for that bike as there should be no gap. There is a groove on inside of headtube and it isn’t deep enough for the FSA lower cup to sit flush. That needs to be flush, I suppose it could maybe be cut or machined down but I don’t think you want to ride it like that. I saw someone install the Funn lower external cup in Marin Bobcat and it sat flush. That was one I was going to try and send but it was sadly currently unavailable. Cheech is looking sweet though! Would look sharp with few blue accents….maybe pedals and stem 🤔Lol
Adding another comment so you see it! Replying about Thursday's- honestly , i just forget! I got so used to Tuesday i automatically turned my tablet on a couple minutes in advance, now dont always remember untill a couple minutes later! Ill get back there, just takes abit! As far as the bike geometry, its just a change, not rally a concern, just slightly different.
You could have reamed out that 1/4”... I reamed my 26.8 seat tube to 27.2 for a PNW Coast post. Think the ream was around $40. So a 1 1/2 is maybe twice the price ?...
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS Yeh, though it was a 26.8 seatpost, it took a 31.8 collar, like other 27.2’s, it think...and yes it was a little scary. I might have destroyed what was a $589 2006 Banshee Scirocco frame. It’s extremely over-built and looks like it will last forever. I got one of the last good forks with a straight 1 1/8 steerer. A Manitou Circus Expert. A 130mm dirt jump fork that your dad couldn’t bottom out. And a bargain @ $400...
I got a fsa headset for my gt aggressor pro and also tried to center it, but eventually said screw it since it kept turning while trying to press it in. Mine also has a little bit of a gap in between the cup and and headtube although not as big as the gap on yours, it almost makes me wonder if we could file it down a bit to make it fit tighter because with my ocd it does annoy me a bit, but mine was a regular straight steerer headset, sorry Jason and Jessica.
Could you help be with a trek marlin 5??? What exactly would I need to put tapered forks onto my straight steer bike??? What are the part numbers I would need?
Well Justyn, is your headtube 44mm? If not then you cannot, but if it is...Good news, we have affiliate links for the headset. So headset and a tapered fork 👍 Then a wheel based upon your selection
Man bad news or good news first??? OK so you can do exactly this ! But not with a jessica....But more good news check the affiliate links in the description!! Lol
The only problem with that adaptor is that it puts the lower bearing below the headtube instead of in the headtube effectively raising the bottom bracket which is going to effect stability
@@chrishorbatt3504 Well Chris, doesn't going mullet do the same? How about just changing out the fork from 80-100mm to something 120-130mm? I think all of this does the same. You know us, it's going to be about the feel and not the numbers or theories. If The Tick hates it, we will probably change it. Thanks man👍
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS not the same as lower the bearing. The frame now thinks the headtube is in a different place. Its only a cople mm but you may notice it, but its not a deal breaker, or you may like it. Sacrificing stability also means it will chang directions quicker

Mr Jo!! Hey brother, ended using your chainring on Veronica Build!! I am sire you seen and thanks for that!! Also we have got to shave down the excess for sure, good looking out and thank you for the comment man.
Used a few of these now and as long as your headtube diameter is correct you are gold. Bike is looking good!
Appreciate ya Chicken Sendies! 🐔 Noce to see ya man
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS I try to stop in when I can.... Sorry it has not been more lately. You guys are killing it like usual 😁😁😁
Ran one of these adaptors on my wifes old hard tail fuji bike and it worked out great the only reason i think ppl freak out about not having a tapered headtube is bc its a bit of an inconvenience to replace the fork bc non tapered forks are becoming harder to find in shops
Absolutely man, also trying to find a tapered fork with a qr!! LOL MANITOU!!
Thanks Phil, how did it go??
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS Awe man, i'm still stuck working out i Iraq until the 1st when i get out of this place (& home to Blighty), I'm only home for 3 weeks this time too before i return to the sand box.... but i will if all things go to plan try get the frame Wrap done and the forks fitted, if so i will take a pic n post it here if i can attach a link defo cant wait though. i just hope i dont hash up this wrap its a black smock camo design and if i can nail that then the fork and hole for the internal dropper will get done too.
Cant wait for your next one guys you guys really help me get through working out here .... well done fellas
1:25 you guys beat me to that. Have had 2 adapter for over a year and no bike, good job
HA ha ha! It's all Kevin brother 👍👍🙏
You can get a good Haibike, Cube (FS) or any of the better hardtail emtbs that will hold up well.
Foggy, thank you so much for that comment brother. That's very cool of youbto say, I would love to review a real mountain bike ebike!!
Good job.A new headset is always a good upgrade. Your new Wolf Tick sign looks great, now you just need to have it illuminated somehow........
It has different colored lights behind it. With the light setup they use for filming, it's hard to see the light on (blue one in this video)
Thanks brother, now please look closely!!!! BLUE BABY!!!
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS I see it now. Old eyes sorry.......
You keep using the headset press wrong. You need to turn it around so that the ridges keep the headset centered into the headtube.
Gotcha, thanks man. 😊 Now I thought I used it right with the ridges up?? Maybe not, but good looking out🤘
cane creek offers a shorter bottom cup to mitigate the gap issue
Thanks brother, you know we will be sharing off some excess. Appreciate the heads up
I just did the same thing to my 2015 Specialized Rockhopper using the Cane Creek adapter. I picked up a Rockshox XC32 and a wheelset with tires at a bike swap meet for $30. The Headset adapter cost more than the rest of the parts.
Now those are the deals we like!! LOL Nicely done 👍👍👍
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS Thanks! Out here in Colorado people change bike components like most people change underwear so there are deals to be had. ;)
What’s the name of the cane creek adapter?
If the Wolfman ever gets fed up and takes the Tick to the ground, who’s gonna win? Lol
😁😁😁🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤦♂️
I did the same with my Specialized, tapered fork onto a straight steerer, I used a risk headset as they make an adapted one to do this (or at least they used to). It adds a little extra height to the front of the bike, plus I put 120mm forks rather than 100mm, but I've not really noticed any difference in handling. You should of asked, I could've told you all about it 😂😂😂
Im not sure I like the gap between the cup and the steerer tube, I think I would get a machine shop to buzz the top off it so it fits in tightly
Interested to hear your thoughts after you've ridden it. Great video
Take care guys 👍😎🍻
Fsa is a set really smooth when you are riding .bike looks very nice with that fork hope it rides well 👍
We hope so as well, it is super cool to have some options like this.
Awesome to hear your experiences! Now we have to head over and watch the Ledge Video!! Thanks brother, we will head over soon.
Gotta do something about that gap between the head tube and lower cup. It will end up disastrous for the bike and possibly disastrous for you, my friend.
Gotcha brother, appreciate the concern and we will be shaving it down!! 👍Thanks
So you said "take a tapered head tube and stick it". Well, I'm waiting!
🤣🤣🤣 Damn Editing! LOL 😆
Marin looking good
Absolutely man, after we try the fork we will put some more time I him👍👍👍🤜
Right now I'm riding suntour forks non tapered I was really wanting foxforks till I realized there all tapered then my alternative forks were going to be rockshox Judy forks but now I seen this video I'm probably going to get foxforks but I will have to convert my front hub from a qwick release axle to a thru axle hub.
Good luck brother 👊
Risk make a headset that will work well with the Marin straight tube when converting to a tapered fork .
The recess being not deep enough is a common issue .
Gotcha, we have since grounded it level and now it fits perfect, thanks man
This is actually silly and very misleading to those that are wondering you can’t do this to budget bikes or older bikes with a 1 1/8 head tube a 44mm head tube is actually intended to be used with either a straight steerer OR a tapered steerer fork.
How to fit tapered 11/8-11/4 fork to non tapered 44mm headtube?
Agree with the others, no gap on lower cup. Needs 2-3mm off the top. Fiddly job tho
It should be lot's of fun😉🤣👍
You’ll desire a lathe…
Cool video i love it when us ukers get a shout out didn't know that was possible look forward to the e11 real time review
😁😁😁🤣 Damn Dan, you truly take it all in!! LOL Thanks man, appreciate all you UKERS 🇬🇧
hello again So rewatch this video again cuz I am wanting to convert both my Mongoose PRO 29" and my 27.5" Conorado NISKI too ROCK SHOX 15x110 BOOST setups on both of these bikes.
Looks good!
Thank you at this moment I had bought the bicycle fork I had said that I got the wrong size instead there are also adapters specifically for this.
Ps; now I delete it from the sales ad!
I'm using a tapered fork on a regular 1 1/8 straight headtube. I let the bottom 11/8 race drop as far as it would go
on the tapered headtube. Then I dropped the headtube on to the tapered steertube. Seems to work fine.
Wish I knew this existed, would of been able to get a tapered fork...
Man sorry it did not come sooner!!
That is a beautiful bike!! But... you have to do something about that space in the bottom of the headtube, like Keith said.
By far my favorite bike on your channel! Have been looking at that brand for a while now and have to say I'm inspired!
Thanks brother and yes, we will be removing some material👍
I was so sad when I found out my 2010 Stumpy with an integrated headset can't accommodate one of those cups so I'm pretty screwed gonna see if I can convert my Talas 32 140mm fork to a Float with Risse Racing. We'll see, hopefully it'll last a while like that.
Diego, that's a bummer man! 😕 we have been there time and time again, glad you are gonna try and make something work 💪
I think you should have taken a grinder to that bottom cup to trim the extra length that hits the inside lip of the headtube. It'll probly be fine tho. 😎⚓👍
We will be doing exactly that brother, thanks El Capitan!!
We just about did that!! We were gonna make a run at a klunker but could not get a hold of one. We just might find a summer project 🤔
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS well if you guys went to Wal-Mart, or checked out eBay I'm sure you could find a cheap bike or a frame easily...
Well that worked only cause that headtube was big to begin with. Before there were tapered steerer tubes there were straight 1 1/2” steerers. So the old headset was a reducer OR the zero stack hight jobbies...
Gotcha, happy it is no longer the old days! Man I hated them quil style stems!! Lol
some higher end frame use that style headset also, I'm going to need one around the end of July
Well Keo, we do have affiliate links!!! LOL Thanks brother 👍
Seems like you could still do this with a 34/44 head tube, just use the bottom half of the adapter.
If you don't hear the clap you're gonna get The Clap after you get a big ole slap!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 You are Def a PATRON!!!
You guys should definitely pick up a San Quentin frame!!!
Man I could see that👍 I've already got a name!!
I have the same headset on my honzo with straight steer tube. That bottom cup has to go up all the way or you will ovalise the head tube.
Gotcha, appreciate the input man. We have fixed it and hopefully you tune in for the next video👍 We talk about it!!
That's the only qualm I have with the aggressor at this point haha
🤣🤣😎 I feel Ya!! Lol
many fabricators does these actually, and there are even ZS ones! :)
Nice!!
Omahogs are getting ready for the Supers this weekend, where is the Wolfman's hat!?
It had the night off. Don't worry, you will be seeing it soon😆👍. Wooo 🐖
Did that to my hydroform last year
Nice, so it is a 44?? Hmmm.... That's awesome!
11:16 don't measure at the head tube as the head tube can be tapered externally, so it will give slacker angle than it actually is, it's best to measure at the station or the fork legs at a straight area.
Very Good Point
There are not for a 34, we do have a video explaining and using a tapered n a 44mm with adapter.
Sorry wolfman, gotta lube them goggles with some water before you put them on and jump in so they act right!
🤣🤣🤣 Call Him on his BLUFF!! LOL
I don't know about that? it seems like if you can put a bike together out of the box you should be able to make a simple driveline adjustment?! if not take it to your local bike shop to make sure it's safe (big box right!) to ride and everything works correctly?!
oops!!...sorry this comment is for the Kent real time review
Well out of the box I can see were you are coming from, but most will buy at the store. And I seriously doubt walmart employees do not tune it in. So we just want to show what to expect for most. Thanks for the comment 👍
Must be a long headtube lower cup you need a spacer or the short headtube lower cup
Man feel ya, we will be taking some excess material off.
looks nice and beefy !
Did you say steak?? 🤔
Check out Ryden Dirty RUclips channel. He had to trim his cane creek external cup to get it to sit flush
HA ha ha! Yes pedals and a stem would be super nice!! LOL We will be taking some meat off the cup, thanks for the heads up
It might be possible but you probably need a tapered lower cup to.make it fit
🤔🤔🤔🤔
My polygon premier 5 has 44/30 semi integrated headset if I was to go tapered fork I'd need a new headset as is but i get my shop to do it
Absolutely man
can you guys please put another schwinn rotor on the back of the marin my ocd is killing me
🤣🤣🤣🤣😜😜 Possibly!!
Dang that fork looks sick on the Marin. I wonder how slack it'd be if you extend it to 130
Probably VERY SLACKED!! LOL This fork fits it perfectly 🤜
You measure the headtube by the fork lowers. The headtube might not always be flat.
Gotcha brother, very good point...Thanks
Adding another comment so you see it! Replying about Thursday's- honestly , i just forget! I got so used to Tuesday i automatically turned my tablet on a couple minutes in advance, now dont always remember untill a couple minutes later! Ill get back there, just takes abit! As far as the bike geometry, its just a change, not rally a concern, just slightly different.
Not a problem Chris 👌
You could have reamed out that 1/4”...
I reamed my 26.8 seat tube to 27.2 for a PNW Coast post. Think the ream was around $40. So a 1 1/2 is maybe twice the price ?...
What?? There was enough meat to ream it out!?!? That's great man, and you don't wanna see me ream anything!! 🤣🤣😜
The calliper setting tool part number (please)? I want one like now! Thank you, anyway :).
I like the video, but you have to tap that bottom back out and grind off a little - that gap is no good- I got cane creek and it doesnt have that gap
Yes sir, we will be addressing that before we do a realtome review. Thanks Troy
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS on the plus side you get another chance to center the logos
I got a fsa headset for my gt aggressor pro and also tried to center it, but eventually said screw it since it kept turning while trying to press it in. Mine also has a little bit of a gap in between the cup and and headtube although not as big as the gap on yours, it almost makes me wonder if we could file it down a bit to make it fit tighter because with my ocd it does annoy me a bit, but mine was a regular straight steerer headset, sorry Jason and Jessica.
🤣🤣🤣😆😆 Love it man, and we will be right there with ya, totally gonna shave it down a little because the non flush Ness. 😳
5:53 Brake rotors too😀
😆😆😆
5:50 that is a fact in 99% of the cases
Wolfman agrees!!
I’ve got a 44mm head tube and I’m trying to get the correct Jessica headset to do the tapered fork swap also any help would be awesome thanks !
Man bad news or good news first??? OK so you can do exactly this ! But not with a jessica....But more good news check the affiliate links in the description!! Lol
8:05 what does that do? Cause I didn't do that when I installed my fork
So is the bike lighter with the new fork on it or does it wear the same❤️👍✌️
Man it's gotta be lighter, the old fork is an anchor!
Good morning . . .
👍
Good morning and good night 😴
The only problem with that adaptor is that it puts the lower bearing below the headtube instead of in the headtube effectively raising the bottom bracket which is going to effect stability
10mm on my Giant Talon on the lower cup. So 3-4 mm at BB
Hmmmm...Not too sure how it's going to feel???
@@richardcranium9572 your right on what ii was thinking
