I’ve daily driven a 1999 E39 540i Touring manual for 6 years / 30,000 miles in the U.K. I self maintain it, and have spent a good few quid on parts. Alternator is the weak point, it has failed twice. Overall, it is the best daily driver I have owned in last 33 years.
Values are climbing in the U.K.
Great channel, keep up the good work 👍

Brother your alternator isn't weak it fails do to power steering fluid leaking on it. Also oil leaks everywhere can get on the sensor and ruin those!

Fully agree - although my Jap import 540i Sport saloon only lasted me 6 months as I wanted to get back to a more modern (I'd sold an F01 730D and gone back to the E39 but now in an F31)
However, my Jap import E39 530i Sport Touring lasted me nearly 3 years and it was a superb car & absolutely loved it, but sold it as the time was right price-wise etc
I may look at another E39 again in 2024 as we'll sell the wife's car and she can use the F31 seeing as I work from home permanently; so another 540i saloon could be a great project (as long as it's not turned into a sieve 😂 )

Nathan, I’ve owned 2 540i’s over the years, combined ownership experience of about 10 years. One M62 (owned out to 300K km when the original timing chain guides went), one M62TU (sold), both in M Sport configuration. Granted I live in a temperate climate without snow/salt. Both my 540s are amongst the best cars (BMW or not) that I have enjoyed owing and driving. A solidly built, well-styled and solid sedan. Definitely not for those with a limited budget (say for a student or for use as a daily) but if you don’t skip or skimp on maintenance they are an affordable classic and passenger-worthy V8 weekender. They remain head and shoulders above their contemporaries of the time. The E39 540i is part of BMWs golden era and worthy of much more respect than I think you have given them. To me they are a sensible alternative to the M5 and probably more usable outside of a track (not that you’d really track an E39 M5 nowadays). Peace. Great work/channel otherwise. 👍

I have both the 540i and X5 with the M62TU, both have over 300k on the clock, spent about $5k all up on both, not bad at all if you can turn a wrench. Both have had their problems, timing chain, clutch fan blowing up and taking out radiator, water pumps, alternator fail etc. Over 2 cars, But that's the worst of it, now it's just turn the key and enjoy 😁

I picked up my ‘03 540imSport about two years ago, super cheap because the previous owner and a string of shops couldn’t diagnose the issue with it. Passenger side cylinder bank was dead, and after doing the chain and guides and setting the timing twice, I discovered galled threads on the cam end bolt on that bank’s intake cam. New bolt and red locktite has kept it in line ever since, and now I’ve installed a Jag supercharger on it and done a manual 6 speed swap with Clutchmasters lightweight flywheel and clutch. A few little issues to sort yet, I’ve got a rev hang issue due to a few of the module coding procedures not following through, but all in all absolutely love this car, and I stand firm with you and all who have said, only mechanics should really be owning these. Still a great channel Nathan, thank you for all you’ve taught and done, and happy new year and much continued success to you as we all move ahead :)

2003 540i6 m sport here. Only big maint items I've had to do are the clutch and the vanos rebuild. Just did the vanos a few weeks ago. Was a bit of labor but nothing too bad. Used the GAS timing tool for the sensor wheel and Chinese tools for the rest of it. No problems. I've got 208k on it. The guides were done some time before I got it cause they look brand new. Hope to get to 300k! But if I get another 50k out of the engine I'll be happy and just plop a used one in. It's such a fun and comfortable car to drive

Have changed the M5 shocks to Bilsteins as they were worn out. Well I own a 540i for 6 years currently 154k and Daily. Replaced everything and car and that's fine cause FCP has lifetime warranty and the car was 4 digits when purchased. Loved it so much I had to get a E39 M5. The M5 is designed better overall. Coolant system, guides, chain, timing covers, you name it it's it's made to last a lot longer then M62tu. The best way to approach these 20-year-old cars is to buy a care package from FCP Euro and do everything and live life happy. But do it yourself.

I’ve been dailying a non vanos e39 540i, one of the most reliable out of my daily’s I’ve had, slowly becoming a beautiful project car, a lot of these issues do fall hand in hand with the non vanos, in my 5 year ownership I’ve had to replace oil pan gaskets, head gaskets and coolant refresh, it’s been almost a year without any major issues just regular maintenance, and I’ve slapped on a clean almost 10k miles. If you enjoy working on cars and want a simple bmw platform, the e39 540 is one of the easiest to diagnose, maintain, and hold pretty sturdy platforms for whatever builds (and daily driving)

Good to see you getting sponsorships/product review spot deals Nathan. Been watching for a long time and really value most of the stuff you put up. Thank you for that. On the scanner note, few options will match a Foxwell NT520 Pro (or 510 Elite) in terms of functionality and cost (~$130) for BMWs older than ~2013. Can access all modules, give BMW codes (not just P codes), do service functions (adaptations, battery registrations, etc). Only downside to it is that it is SLOW. But I use it all the time as it's still easier than dragging out the laptop with ISTA. Thanks again Nathan, sorry to hear about your G wagon, hope you make out well with the insurance reimbursement.

I guess Nathan really, really dislikes the E39 540i with the M62tu engine. However, I've had my 2003 540i Sport with manual transmission since 2013 and love it. It has all the features of the M Sport except the rear differential and the sport seats. Over the years I've replaced the front and rear control arms, the spark plugs when I did the valve cover gaskets and later a couple of coils, fixed the leaking rear door seals, replaced the headlight adjusters, refinished the headlight lenses, replaced the radiator, overflow tank, thermostat and water pump, and replaced/rebuilt the alternator 3 times, which is my biggest complaint. Installed a Spal electric fan and electronically lowered the thermostat opening temperature so that the car runs at around 95C now. Installed a head unit to replace the factory stereo system which gives me GPS navigation, hands-free cell phone functionality, a backup camera and dash cam. I added an i-bus unit and app so I can monitor the engine real time and activated a bunch of features which are otherwise unavailable. The car has all the M5 trim pieces except the badges, including steering wheel, front and rear bumpers and short gear stick. I bought it with 148,000 kilometres on the clock and now it's at 220,000. There was a slight rattle from the engine at idle when I bought it but replacing the timing chain tensioner fixed that. I do an oil change every 7 or 8 thousand kilometres and have never had any debris of any kind in the oil. I've never had to add any oil between oil changes though I do still have a few drips under the engine which would be very difficult to prevent without a full engine overhaul. My biggest fear is having the timing chain guides fail. They may have been done by the previous owner but maybe not. The latest Blackstone analysis came back very clean with lower than average numbers for all metals except iron, which is slightly higher than average but nothing to worry about, so I'm told. I may be just lucky, or the guides might fail tomorrow, but I try my best to maintain the car to the highest standard and the Orient Blue paint has held up really well, even through cold Canadian winters. I wouldn't want to own any BMW newer than mine because the quality has really deteriorated over the years, especially anything made with plastic. The repairs I've made may seem extensive but I've done them all myself for the most part and they're almost all things which will wear over time on any car. Nathan does a fabulous job with his very informative videos and I wish him the best of luck fixing his new M5. That's a car I would love to drive but wouldn't want one to own even if it was free.

I owned an 01 540 wagon. Lucked out that only issues were the leaking door cards and a coolant leak. Sold it to a family member who had it for 2 years (no issues) and he sold it on when he moved cross country. Occasionally luck falls on your side. That V8 loved to run but I would never buy another 540.

They're just all old af, so they need maintenance and that's also fun to do, so it's a win-win.. 😅

I believe its true about the 540 going down in value with the m62tu but i feel its only with those without the m package because a 2003 540 with an m package still to this day looks sexier than many of the cars of today. So i believe if its an ‘03, it will experience either an incremental increase depending on condition or stagnant with value determined by how much a buyer is willing to pay.
However, the 740 is a different story but shares similarities: so anything prior to ‘01 will absolutely lose value, but if you have an ‘01 sport with the m package, hang on to it. Those will spike in value sooner or later, despite the m62tu. Keep in mind, its the last year they made the most successfully looking sedan BMW has arguably ever created with a beautiful sport package. (Back when the ///M badge wasn’t watered down like it is today.

Anywho, ok I have purchased a used 2003 530i with tuning by Dinan that includes a Dinan cold air intake setup. This car is very good on gas mileage and the power this car has omg…. It’s my first BMW so excited to have gone BMW but it recently started to leak antifreeze really bad and when I opened the hood we did not notice that the high pressure access port stem was missing it looks like it snapped off at the base that goes into the dryer canister (we knew it was in a accident minor but did have some passenger side damage so I’m assuming it happened during the accident, well my brother removed the hose from the entry point to the cabin and from the top of the dryer canister took it out and a day or Two later I started to see the leak of what look like antifreeze coming from the front part of the engine and I could not see where any hoses were damaged or busted but for the just in case situation first, that hose needs to be replaced to have a working high pressure access port stem attached like it should be so we got a used hose that we put in and that was a you know what to put in but we finally got it attached and it looks like the leak has stopped but my brother also put this product called (K-Seal) into the antifreeze reservoir and they say that the stops all kinds of leaks like an Antifreeze leak so I was just wondering did the hose coming off of the engine completely was what started the leak and wound replacing it Stop this antifreeze leak is that antifreeze even connected to the A/C reattaching it closed it off that we even need to add the case seal or is the case you’re a bad product to even put into the engine I mean I guess other two questions are anyways please get back to me thank you

I agree 100% very costly car to get it to where it needs to be near bullet proof but after you spend that $ you have a solid car for another 150k or so. Not sure why all these guys are throwing $ on all these mods to make the m62tu44 it faster when they can put that $ towards a well sorted m5 and be able to get that $ back after a few yrs with even some profit. the 540i was never meant to be a sports car it was a $60k luxury car for businessmen/lawyer types and the m5 was the sports sedan that very few could afford at that time. I own a 99 540i/6 210k w/no mods & replaced everything, it has never left me stranded, i love it & will probably drive it til it dies.

There is not much difference between the TU and non TU in terms of maintenance/repair cost, of course the TU having the Vanos it will be some extra bucks to fix. But overall maintaining those cars is very expensive. Just bought a wheel carrier/hub for over 700 bucks at the dealer. Many other parts for this car are much more expensive from the dealer now, it is recommended to buy aftermarket parts from the original manufacturer to avoid having to pay a fortune when possible. Most parts are available aftermarket such as radiator, suspension parts etc. But even that, the original part manufacturer parts for this car, such as Behr, Bosh and so on, are not the same quality it used to be. Last year I bought a viscous clutch from Behr. It lasted 12 months and was stopping intermittently while stopping in traffic. I bought a russian made one and it is working perfectly, except it does spin a little more than the original, so you hear the fan kicking more often. I don't mind the extra noise, but those parts are not what they used to be anymore. I even bought a brand new internal door handle made in Russia. Quality if very good.

I have a 2000 540i touring. Did a lot of fixes and were affordable. The timing chain guide finally failed. I put it away thinking I’d make it a winter project. I realized I’m not into it. I’m entertaining just sticking a Small Block Chevy in it. Or dumping it.
On the flip side the wife’s 2002 530i keeps running with minimal stuff. Wish I’d never bought the wagon.

fixing the 2 front V-chain-heads needs a custom tool to properly adjust them upon the seals (1 gum piece stands higher) to avoid leakages after completing during normal use.

    Hi Nathan,
I've seen you warnings about the BMW 540i M62TUB44 engine several times now and I can buy a Swiss 540i with 156.000 kilometers (100k Miles) on it.
From the in- and outside it is in mint state.
Dealer says that the VANOS and plastic Time chainguides have been taken care of when they replaced the chain.
I've seen another video about the issue from an English bloke Timm (Timm's BMW repairshop: ruclips.net/video/ktEctXhtufs/видео.html) and he says if you change your oil regularly with good semi- or full synthetic oil and keep the chain tensioned with replacing the timchaintensioner every 50k kilometers, your probably fine.
What are your thoughts about that?
And what about the pre 1998 535i M62B35 Engine?

The E39 is one of the most gorgeous sedans ever made, but let's face it. Those engines are just horrible in terms of reliability and maintenance cost compared to nearly everything else of that era. It's going to be THE reason the E39 wont ever be considered a collector car, wont maintain value, and will eventually fade off into forgettable obscurity. Very sad, but also very true.

Catastrophic failure/ticking time bombs are caused by neglect and no preventative maintenance on anything mechanical. Planes, boats, motorcycles etc. Also go ahead, never brush your teeth and avoid the dentist. Go to the beach and ditch the sunscreen to save a few. Your homes roof and paint is old? Who cares, don't maintain it. Why bother lol. Live near the woods? Just let the termites destroy your home. Never inspect it.

    • @roguegeek
      @roguegeek 2 года назад

@@kzoomin Yeah, that's the same rhetoric everyone from that BMW era says. "Well if you just put in the time, there wont be any problems." The issue is the time you put into an E39 to keep it going does not equate the the time you'd have to put into something else. Some of the time, it's less work to maintain, but you and I both know that a whole hell of a lot of time, it's way more with these cars. Comparatively, these cars are far more finicky to maintain. It's not even an argument.
