About: In this video I talk about the banned or censored Pokémon cards. These cards had their artwork altered to be acceptable in Western culture. A lot of these are pretty funny and have interesting backstories.
The Misty’s Tears card was infamous in the schoolyard. “Have you heard about the Naked Misty card?! It was banned but my brother’s friend’s uncle has one!”
I actually did have one as a kid, got it in a trade and hadn't really payed much attention to it until my dad saw it lol
Hands down best pokemon channel out there!
Nonono! But thank you 😬
Amazing work... I felt like I was at Pokemon School taking a History 201 class! I also kinda want all these cards now, haha.
Thanks! Yea learning about cards tends to empty the ol’ wallet
The milk one was so weird looking at first but the more i peered into it, i struggled to even decide what i was looking at.
My inner monologue was telling me I simply wasn't seeing it with the correct perspective in mind but I could draw no other conclusion as to what the hell that card is even trying to depict
8:20 I don't know how the myth started in the last few years but the rotation of the Swastika doesn't matter, only the direction does. Both versions where used but in many cases the corner down version was preferred because it looks more dynamic, but both the flat and angled version was used.
10:34
Memories of me playing at the Game Corner to get a Larvitar and Porygon.
Wow what a video. I think these will be the first japanese cards I purchase
Another amazing video. I had no idea about that Magmortar card.
Thanks!
Can we discuss how Driftloon does this… ☠️ 😂
Drifloon is said to target children by tugging on their hands or heads to try to drag them away. There is also a rumor that children who mistake Drifloon for a balloon and hold onto it could go missing
Yeah real 1996 Gengar vibes there
Im pretty sure the Yokai Jinx is based on just happens to have what we would consider Black Face.
Mr Popo IS based on a Hindu God.
I don’t think either of their designs are intended to be offensive in any way. They’re just frowned upon in western culture unfortunately
Dang i did not know the info about jynx's censorship. Thank you for the obscure information, that had to be hard to find.
"Gold and silver virgins". Lol
Great topic though once again!
I said versions!!! lol I wanted to re-record that line but the audio didn’t quite sound the same
Your videos are so well done and always informative!
Thank you!
Lol Pound has been a pokemon staple move since its inception lots of cards have the move too :P
5:43 Aside from Dragon types I don't think I've ever seen a card with 2 different energy type attacks on it excluding colorless of course
Quite the interesting vid. The only banned card I knew about before was Misty's tears then again I've always been a Yugioh guy myself which has loads of censorship with its cards...
Thanks for another nice video!
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it
And you’re on a list……… great stuff
I got the Japanese Sabrina’s gaze in a psa slab!!
Really interesting video :) thanks
I have that grimer, I need to grade it, it's in great shape
Excellent content
7:48 Her middle finger is still longer than all other fingers. She's flipping off someone, but who? 🤔
some people's hands are like that. Mine strangely enough
I collected all of the Japanese versions of the cards mentioned in 1999 BEFORE I wuz aware of any controversy
Ok
I have the Japanese moo moo milk card. I laugh whenever I look at it.
Same! 😂
2:37 a little bit unrelated but can someone tell me what the "growths"/flaps on Jynx's hips are supposed to be...I'm wondering to this day why
Jynx has those as it feels like her robe was washed badly and now it has this stiff edges around her hips
As someone who speaks Japanese and is often around Japanese media, I'm now actually used to seeing the Manji symbol. Even now on Google maps it's still used and I've become slightly desensitised to it. But at the same time, it's hard to still look at it as a swastika.
Don't say western audiences. Just call it american audiences lol.
not to start an argument on a month old comment, but “western” doesn’t just encapsulate america. it also includes canada, mexico, lots of island nations, and a majority of europe. i have a deep gripe with your comment; it implies that racism or pedophilic content is okay and people who are offended are isolated and stupid. this is not well thought out. do better
@@fruityb0wl232 you are from the usa?
Implies Americans are stupid, yet you are using a American social media app. Lmao LOL even.
What’s the problem with “Pound”?
Pound is sometimes a euphemism for sex
@@sleevenocardbehind So when the British say they pay in pounds...
This shows that western audience was very sensitive (sometimes too much) & Japanese audience was laid back. Nothing wrong with the both sides as every country has different values & whatnot. Ultimately it gave us a very interesting pokemon card history.
Interesting, especially the one about Jinx. I heard of it before, but never the full story. Never did I think of it as a racist stereotype. Not when I first encountered this Pokemon all the years back when I was like 7 , nor did I think of it while I was growing up, until I heard of the controversy a couple of years back. This begs the question if it really was as bad by itself or if it was made a problem by people complaining about it... No hate though, just a thought.
In the 90s / early 2000s they were also closer to that particular cartoon and blackface in general. Its understandable it would go unnoticed at 7. It is now because of our distance
I truly believe our moral compass is instinctual, and everything outside of that is taught (re: fabricated). I had a friend who loved watching Scooby-Doo, but after her sister told her the ghosts were scary, she became afraid to watch it.
You say that like you would've known what a Sambo character was as a child. I bet if your parents seen it they would say wtf is this bs?!
If anyone knows 90s kids, it wasn't them complaining about middle fingers or Misty. But good to know the reason we can't enjoy original Jinx or Mr. Popo is because some random Karen perceived racism then went on a crusade against children's shows. Also, that original Magmortar card is sick!
Why do you feel like we need to have depictions of characters that are deemed racist? Oh no! My Pokémon can't look like how racists depict black people! I'll never live!
@@raynenolan2864 Why do you feel like we can't have fantasy or anime depictions of monsters with all kinds of skin colors? Oh no! Japan created a single Pokemon with dark skin! I'll never live!
